Jos茅 de Sousa Saramago (16 November 1922 鈥 18 June 2010) was a Portuguese novelist and recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature, for his "parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony [with which he] continually enables us once again to apprehend an elusory reality." His works, some of which have been seen as allegories, commonly present subversive perspectives on historic events, emphasizing the theopoetic. In 2003 Harold Bloom described Saramago as "the most gifted novelist alive in the world today."

The protagonist 鈥 a high school history teacher 鈥 watching some inane movie sees the actor who looks exactly like him and he becomes obsessed with the idea to find his double鈥
Tertuliano M谩ximo Afonso got up from the chair, knelt down in front of the television, his face as close to the screen as he could get it and still be able to see, It鈥檚 me, he said, and once more he felt the hairs on his body stand on end, what he was seeing wasn鈥檛 true, it couldn鈥檛 be, any sensible person who happened to be there would say reassuringly, Come off it, Tertuliano, I mean, he鈥檚 got a mustache, and you鈥檙e clean shaven.

Thus the chase commences and the story turns into a sort of mystery, or rather into a postmodernistic mystery noir鈥 While seeking his human replica the hero sagely contemplates the nature of knowledge and cognition鈥
The wheel was invented and stayed invented forever and ever, whereas words, those and all the others, came into the world with a vague, diffuse destiny, as highly provisional phonetic and morphological clusters, however much, thanks perhaps to the inherited glow of their glorious creation, they may insist on passing themselves off, not so much in their own right, but on behalf of the thing they variably mean and represent, as immortal, undying, or eternal, depending on the taste of the person doing the classifying.

At last doubles manage to meet鈥 Physically they are absolutely identical but their styles of living are utterly different鈥
Whether he likes it or not, clothes do indeed make the man.

Cognition is a process of deciphering surrounding chaos鈥 Life is cognition.

Tertuliano M谩ximo Afonso watches a video recommended by a friend and discovers he has a double 鈥 a man who could be his identical twin, who looked and sounded exactly like Maximo did five years ago when the film was made. Like a private investigator, he sets out to find who the man is and meet with him. It鈥檚 a harder task than it seems because the man had only a walk-on role and is simply one name among a long list of extras in the film.

description

Finding his double shocks him so much that he doesn鈥檛 tell any of the (only) three significant others in his life: his on-again-off-again woman friend, his mother, and a male colleague at work. Since he is not revealing what has become an obsession, a good part of the story is how this secrecy impacts his relationships with these three people. There鈥檚 a metaphor with the double in the sense that they tell him he is acting like 鈥渁nother person.鈥

M谩ximo is a very intelligent history teacher who realizes he is as confused as his students by the broad scope of human civilization he tries to convey in his classes. 鈥溾€e viewed sweet History, the serious, educational subject which he had felt called upon to teach and which could have been a soothing refuge for him, as a chore without meaning and a beginning without an end. As he ends up watching his double in 30 videos, and debates if he should view the oldest first, or the most recent first, the author develops an extended metaphor about the applicability of his order of viewing to the best way of teaching history: why must history always be taught from the past to the present 鈥 why not the reverse?

As in many of Saramago鈥檚 novels, there鈥檚 a science fiction touch to the story 鈥 in this case based on the idea of clones. We all heard of Dolly the Sheep in 1996 and this book was published in 2002.

I won鈥檛 reveal any of the story after he meets the man who is his double other than to say that there are some startling developments that keep the story moving and that dramatically impact the life of our main character, his woman friend and the double.

I appreciate the authors philosophical nuggets and metaphors. Some examples:

鈥溾€ne of those hardy types to whom human frailty, especially in its most refined and delicate forms, is the cause of mocking laughter, the truth is that the inarticulate sounds which, quite against our wishes, occasionally emerge from our own mouth, are merely the irrepressible moans from some ancient pain or sorrow, like a scar suddenly making its forgotten presence felt again.鈥

鈥淎s can never be stated too often, the best inventions are made by those who did not know what they were doing.鈥

鈥溾€hat tends to happen is that people gather together under an opinion as if it were an umbrella.鈥

鈥溾€hat awful old chestnut, we鈥檙e friends now and we鈥檒l always be friends, that鈥檚 the worst thing anyone can say if they鈥檙e trying to end a romantic relationship, it鈥檚 as if we had closed the door only to find that were stuck fast in it鈥︹€

鈥淏eing a man should never be an impediment to behaving like a gentleman.鈥

鈥淎ll the dictionary鈥檚 put together don鈥檛 contain half the terms we would need in order for us to understand each other鈥︹€

鈥溾€eachers were trying to pass unnoticed amid the choppy sea of heads that surrounded them on every side, dodging as best they could the reefs that rose up before them as they slunk toward their natural harbor, the staff room.鈥

鈥溾€ust one of those problems that comes with old age, they come and go, go and come, and finally stay.鈥
鈥淎ntonio Claro [the actor] will not waste his breath by replying that it鈥檚 impossible not to have enemies, that enemies are born not out of our will to have them but out of their irresistible desire to have us.鈥

It happens that I read and reviewed another of Saramago鈥檚 books last week: All the Names. I was struck by what I will call 鈥榮tructural similarities鈥 between the two books. The Double was published in 2002; All the Names in 1997. Both are about a fundamentally lonely man who lives by himself, who has an unsatisfying or boring job with a with a revered or feared supervisor. In both books the main character goes on an obsessive private investigator-like quest looking for another person and he is not able to tell anyone else about it. Because he can鈥檛 talk about his quest with another character in the book, the author invents a method for him to hold discussions and keep the reader informed of his thinking: in All the Names it is his bedroom ceiling; in The Double, it is his 鈥榗ommon sense鈥 talking to him.

In any case, a good story with excellent writing as we expect from the Nobel prize winning author.

The thought of having a 诲辞辫辫别濒驳盲苍驳别谤 freaks me out, if I had one, I would rather not know. Even somebody bearing a strong resemblance to one's self is weird enough, but an actual replica? with the same moles, the same scars, and the same voice. No thanks. I am me, and I want to keep it that way. If only History professor Tertuliano M谩ximo Afonso returned the video tape to the shop and forgot all about what he witnessed on screen. But he couldn't, a curiosity built up inside him. Just who is that man who looks like my identical twin? I want to know who he is. I must find him.

Made in our own image, the double can incarnate our evil deeds, or kindly take our place in order to perform a seemingly impossible task, it is one of the most complex and richly told fables. Jos茅 Saramago is clearly influenced by the old tales. Whether a different version of Christ's Passion, or an account of the universal scourge of being sightless, Saramago has found in these primordial narratives fodder for his own fictional world. One I would say he excels at. The main character, Tertuliano, becomes obsessed with the idea of meeting the person he takes to be his double, a bit part actor called Antonio Claro. After obsessively viewing dozens of other movies by the same production company, he gets results by discovering his name. And ponders on his next move. This would lead to a chain of events that not only desn't go according to plan, but opens up a whole other set of possibilities that spells danger for the people he most cares about, including his girlfriend, Maria da Paz.

I loved Saramago's story, the way it delved deep into my consciousness, resulting in a finale that sat well with me. As for Tertuliano himself, a guy who meandered through life feeling like someone owed him a favour. He believes he is depressed. No. He wants to be depressed. Why? A nice girl who is far too good for him, a decent well payed job. Put the violin away. To me he just appeared to be a bit of a drip. The long continuous sentences and detailed faintly comic descriptions of Tertuliano's comings and goings started to annoy me, and then it didn't. Saramago may be a Nobel laureate who feels obliged to write like a Prose experimentalist filling the pages with hardly any paragraph breaks, but thankfully, from my own perspective this is something that wasn't new, and writing style eventually I came to truly admire. After the point of no return, when the Identicals finally meet, I loved every minute right through to it's conclusion, it just took a while to get into the story.

There's nothing particularly new in positing a logical world and then introducing an absurd element which leads to an unravelling of identity. It's true that he takes the story in some unexpected directions, but that's to be expected, it keeps you on your toes. His history teacher becomes more decisive, more alert to the world around him, more committed to his life in the shadow of his His depression is a thing of the past. He simply hasn't the mind anymore to wallow in pity knowing he's out there. The actor Antonio Claro starts off as the innocent party only to grow more into a menace the longer the story progresses. I had absolutely no idea what was likely to happen from one moment to the next. Isn't that such a wondrous feeling to possess whilst reading a novel.

One of the other pleasures of the book is the way Saramago faithfully follows the relentless logic of the situation he has devised. When the two men meet, it is at once apparent that they are indeed doubles. Down to the moles on their forearms and the date of their birth. Immediately, existential questions are raised. Which of them, Tertuliano worriedly wonders, is the original and which the duplicate. No answers there. When it turns out that Claro was born a half-hour before Tertuliano, it somehow becomes inevitable that one of them will have to be destroyed. Having been born on the same day, they both want to know, of course, if they are destined also to die on the same day.

Saramago doesn鈥檛 bother with quotation marks to denote when people are speaking, and he doesn鈥檛 break up conversations aside from inserting commas in between each person鈥檚 statements, but that aside I found it great, Saramago on top form. He certainly wasn't a writer shy of confidence within himself, and he maybe one of the masters of the Long Sentence to the annoyance of some, but from a psychological and moral standpoint he simply sucked me in.

Tertuliano M谩ximo Afonso discovers that there is another identical to himself in appearance, invoice, and everything else. This fact begins his torment.
Distressed by this discovery, Tertuliano M谩ximo Afonso transforms his entire routine into a detailed and secret search for his double.
What would be a fascinating fact for many people, Tertuliano M谩ximo Afonso feels like stifling oppression.
A novel that follows in a suspenseful tone and subtle irony and humor characterizes Jos茅 Saramago.
This work is a reading that proposes us, above all, to understand why this immense, and some, strange agony of Tertuliano M谩ximo Afonso.

(p谩g. 272)

Quantum Physics of Identity

"Only a common sense with the imagination of a poet could have invented the wheel." Not a bad self-referential summary of Saramago's The Double.

This book is common sense and imagination applied to human identity and the result is a literary wheel turning round and round in the minds of two apparently identical individuals. Is one merely a copy of the other? Are their fates entangled like quantum particles? Do they become parts of the other simply by knowing of the other's existence? How random is life anyway?

Once again Saramago creates a situation in which to explore the oddness of being alive and knowing it.

...Infuriating!

Incredibly hard to read! This was a self-inflicted punishment by an insipid reader trying to introduce himself to a compulsively revolting writer!

Saramago, who is, like his name suggests, a "mago", or wizard, pretty much singlehandly diminishes the joy that reading brings, making it all one self-assured, self-serving CHORE.

Man, I hated this book. The story could be a novella, would be an amazing and silly and cool one at that, but in novel form, well... all Saramago does is throw words & strips & strings of consciousness-- all very art noveau. But is this a contribution to our literary canon? It is a step backward...

The protagonist is boring, has a boring life, has boring things happen to him. The plot is intriguing to just say something nice about it: this man finds his double. The double, a figure just as unlikable as its model, then tries to live the protagonist's life. It ends at a terrible point... the dark ambiguity wins! Yipee! See, am an expert at finding the silver lining.

I recommend this solely to my enemies. It's that lame.

I should preface this review with a disclaimer that I both love Jose Saramago and magical realism. Adore both, actually. Do not judge my nerdiness. I will loudly and proudly shout to the line behind me at the book store that I cannot wait to read about a magical mountain range. And when the manager has to come over and escort me to the door with my purchases, I'll shout even louder about how much I admire the tale of an old village woman who lived to be 250. And when the manager tells me I cannot come back, well then I'll probably just go to my car, because what a jerk.

Like all of Saramago's books, this one starts with a puzzling anomaly in the normal, regimented, and dull life of an unassuming nobody living in a large, identity-robbing city. Then the next two-thirds of the book provide extremely detailed subtleties into the nature and personality of the protagonist and his environment. This section is so beautifully written, but it almost seems like he loses the story. Until bango! The last, gripping 75 pages or so where the entire plot erupts into action sequences and discoveries. What is so brilliant about Saramago is he does not spell anything out directly. You need to really absorb the first sections of the book to figure out the full meaning and unravel the plot.

In this book, not only was the ending fast paced, it was also murderous and malicious and filled with grief and sex. More explicit than I anticipated and keeping me up late at night with my lamp burning. Loved it. And the translator must be a genius with words because translating a book where you have to dig up "persipacity" is cuckoo bananas. I highly recommend "The Double" if you like Saramago. If you generally don't care for his stuff, then no way will you like this one. At least that's my prediction because it's 100% his style the whole way through.

Saramago was a unique literary magician, and this is one of his most hauntingly memorable books. This one is a real slow burner, which demands great patience of its reader, but like so many of Saramago's books it is full of dry humour.

The first part of the book might even be described as dull, as the long and apparently rambling sentences, conversations without quotes, and occasional asides from his omniscient narrator set up a picture of an unsympathetic and drab antihero, a depressed history teacher who watches a video recommended by a colleague and sees a bit part actor who is his exact likeness.

As in his modern parables , and , Saramago takes an implausible scenario and slowly and inexorably explores the consequences - this one is a more personal story.

The last 100 pages or so are absolutely gripping and the denouement is very clever - many readers may not get that far, but those who do may find the book unforgettable.

Saramago nunca me desilude.

If you鈥檙e one of those readers who give low ratings to books only because you didn鈥檛 like the characters鈥 personality traits and/or behaviour then don鈥檛 even get close to this one.

If your favourite books can be found on sale at the supermarket around the corner be warned, this one is definitely not for you.

If turning the pages quickly is more important to you than to let yourself be carried away by good writing and philosophical thought provoking ideas to a satisfying ending, I definitely wouldn鈥檛 recommend this novel to you.

If you think I鈥檓 becoming a book snob though, let me tell you you鈥檙e absolutely right.

A good book is not a good book only because I liked it; it just is.

Tertuliano Maximo Afonso, annesi, kiz arkadasi, is arkadaslari, yoneticileri, mahalledeki dvd film kiralayabildiginiz dukkandaki kasiyer adam ve ona yardim eden kiz, film sirketindeki kadin...

Daha 枚nceden okudu臒um ve 莽ok sevdi臒im Jose Saramago kitaplar谋nda ana konu toplum, siyaset, din ele艧tirileriydi. 陌kili diyaloglar谋n sadece virg眉lle ayr谋lmas谋 okuyucuyu hep diri tutuyor. Bu yaz谋m 艧eklinin Saramago'nun okurlar谋ndan bekledi臒i bir sorumluluk oldu臒unu d眉艧眉n眉yorum. Ancak insan谋n kendi olabilmesi ve toplumdaki yerinin her zaman ilgi 莽ekici olmas谋 ve bu konuda asl谋nda s枚ylenecek 莽ok de臒i艧ik bir 艧ey kalmamas谋 bu tahmin edilebilirli臒i arka plana atmam谋 sa臒l谋yor. Zaten ne s枚yledi臒i kadar bunu nas谋l s枚yledi臒i ve hissettikleri de 莽ok 枚nemli oldu臒u i莽in okuma s眉reci fazlas谋yla tatmin edici. Art谋k okuyacak yeni bir Saramago kitab谋n谋n kalmamas谋ndan korktu臒um i莽in, arada bo艧luklar b谋rakarak okudu臒um kitaplar谋n bir yenisiyle kar艧谋la艧aca臒谋m zamana kadar 艧imdilik bu dahiyle vedala艧谋yorum.

"Stranci smo svi, 膷ak i mi ovde.

Na膷in kako je to ura膽eno podse膰a na Kalvinov .

O Homem Duplicado = The Double, Jos茅 Saramago
The Double (Portuguese: O Homem Duplicado) is a 2002 novel by Portuguese author Jos茅 Saramago, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature. In Portuguese, the title is literally "The Duplicated Man." It was translated into English and published as The Double in 2004. Tertuliano M谩ximo Afonso is a divorced high school history teacher who spends his nights reading about Mesopotamian civilizations.

Aconselho este livro a quem quiser come莽ar a ler Saramago, porque considero dos mais acess铆veis do autor.

(review in English below)

Having watched the movie based on this book (Enemy, directed by Denis Villeneuve and starred by Jake Gyllenhaal) I really had to read it, even more so because the story didn't seem Saramagoesque at all to me.

The movie is in fact quite true to the book (with some adaptations to the present day, like the use of internet), although it includes some elements which do not appear in the latter (namely the spiders, referring to the role of women). The ending of the movie is more open than the book's and this gave way to some psychological and philosophical interpretations, like , which is not a possibility in the book.

As for the book itself (for this is GoodReads and not GoodMovies, although that would be nice too), I think it's very good. I had not read a novel by Saramago for quite some time and I still enjoy it very much - the writing, the digressions interspersed in the narrative, the humor and the irony.

I especially liked the dialogues between the different characters, but mostly between the protagonist and the common sense, which shows up on several occasions to talk with Tertuliano M谩ximo Afonso, providing profound considerations as well as some comic relief.

I think that the author could have explored the identity question (or what identifies us beyond the physical traits) a bit more - it was the perfect context and it wasn't developed as I would expect it to be.

I'm already planning on reading The Double by Dostoyevsky and I found out there's a book by Philip K. Dick that also addresses this subject (A Scanner Darkly).

I recommend this one, especially for Saramago fans out there.

Well, I had planned on starting this review with some choice zingers about Saramago shameless burgling the plot of any or every Murakami novel, wherein some workaday shlub, with a boring job and a boring life and crushingly alone in the world, has a chance-or-not-chance run-in with some inexplicable unnatural or supernatural phenomenon which comes to consume him, only with the Portuguese author applying his trademark run-on sentences and incredibly lengthy paragraphs and narratological excursions and un-demarcated dialogue, and replacing the Japanese author's focus on Jazz and Food with a focus on History and Philosophy, proceeding from which I planned on working through the copious notes that I took regarding the confusion of identity and the importance of words and narration in the construction of the self to discuss the existential dilemma at the heart of this novel and to solve what I thought would be a series of puzzles and confusions, but then, after hundreds of pages, I realized that this book was actually rather boring, and that Saramago wasn't saying anything that I found to be particularly interesting, and that the actions and choices of the main character were, frankly, inexplicable and unbelievable, and that the climax of the narrative was basically the most juvenile and unimaginative and misogynistic expression of conflict by which each of the doubles could supposedly strike deep at the heart of the other man's identity or individuality or manhood or whatever, and so I lost interest in investing that much work in this book.

Fiecare carte are un substrat metaforic.
