Johanna Helen Howard was born on March 10, 1952 in Germany, where her father, Edwin Dennis Howard, a soldier in the U.S. Army was stationed. The family moved about a great deal when she was young. Her father always dreamed of retiring to Hawaii, and after he passed away in 1964 Johanna and her mother settled there to honor him.

In 1970, when she was still in school, she married Ralph Lindsey, becoming a young housewife. The marriage had three children; Alfred, Joseph and Garret, who already have made her a grandmother. After her husband's death, Johanna moved to Maine, New England, to stay near her family.

Johanna Lindsey wrote her first book, Captive Bride in 1977 "on a whim", and the book was a success. By 2006, with over 58 Million copies of her books have been sold worldwide, with translations appearing in 12 languages, Johanna Lindsey is one of the world's most popular authors of historical romance.

Johanna's books span the various eras of history, including books set in the Middle Ages, the American "Old West" and the popular Regency England-Scotland. She has even written a few sci-fi romances. By far the most popular among her books are the stories about the Malory-Anderson Family, a Regency England saga.

Johanna Lindsey died on Oct. 27, 2019 in Nashua, N.H. She was 67.

I’ve read Johanna Lindsay’s entire backlist- the good, the bad, and the ugly. I have her entire backlist in 1st printing even. When I heard there was a sale on some of her digital editions. I grabbed a few. Heart of Thunder was one of them.

I decided a bit ago to work my way through some of my old favorite author’s backlist because I never got reviews up for them. Starting HoT, I realized I didn’t remember a thing about it. Now finished with my re-read, I realize why. I think subconsciously I must have wanted to forget it. Forget that an author who wrote some of my most beloved romances, could “go there on so many levels.

The heroine, Samantha Kingsley Blackstone is a rich girl making her way back home to the hacienda she was born to in Mexico. Along the way she runs into Hank Chavez who instantly falls for her. Only she’s in love with her bff’s brother. To bad for her because bff’s brother is, as Hank put it, an “hombres puta, (no lie- man. whore. Literally). Samantha has no gaydar so she tries to use Hank to make him jealous. This causes deep resentment in Hank when he discovers it... because he was set to marry her.

Enter forced seduction scene #1. Only it wasn’t so much. Because though Hank starts off angry, and okay headed into territory few like to see in their romance novels anymore- unless its your particular kink- he softens and she willingly joins in on her forced seduction. However she changes her mind afterward. She shoots him as he rides off and continues to refer to it as rape throughout the book.

She confronts her bff and brother, then heads out for home. By this time I’m seriously not liking this spoiled, selfish, bitch. She's so pissed that Hank Chavez led her down the path of destruction, she sends out wanted posters up and down the territory. (Which is a thread left dangling for the record.) But For some reason, rather than rage at what happened to her, it just makes her out to be a brat throwing a temper tantrum.

Samantha eventually makes it home to Mexico only to find out some bandido has been harassing her Dad and stealing from their land. She promptly finds herself kidnapped and held for ransom only to find out, surprise surprise Hank Chavez is the bandido- and even more bizarrely it has nothing to do with her and everything to do with the land.

Hank? Well, him I could almost stand. He’s handsome and not as nasty as Samantha claims him to be- the “mystery as to why he’s harassing her father is pretty obvious. But his dealings with her, and even the fact he still wants her even though SHE HATES him (but I want him!) makes him TSTL.

Anyway, me thinks the lady protests too much. Plus Samantha is always reassuring the reader she’s brutally honest with herself (read, “I WANT HIS BOD) but she certainly is with no one else in the story.

The plot is contrived from her continued “You disgust me- but I waaaant you to the reason he marries her. ::rolleyes:: (C’mon you wanted it all along, what came with the marriage was only the icing on the cake.)

The last quarter of the book turned out to be a little more interesting as it moves to England and introduces a brother I don't believe was ever spoken of before in the novel and yet another side plot of his fiancé looking to harm Samantha. (Scratching my head as to why this was added as it's a plot line in and of itself.)

sigh. Awful heroine. Cringe worthy relationship. Annoying dialogue. Disjointed plot. Wtf, JL. W.T.F

meh.

Samantha and Hank had a tumultuous relationship because Samantha was, to put it bluntly, an absolute b*tch. Her "heart of thunder", a euphemism for a fiery spirit I guess, caused her to treat Hank with hostility and unfairness for most of the book. The back and forth fighting just went on and on.

Oh, how I wanted Hank to end up with a better woman! He really deserved someone who appreciated him. True, he occasionally stooped to Sam's level too, but was for the most part a decent hero. (Possessing charm and a tragic, sympathetic past didn't hurt his cause.) I just have to wonder why he fell in love with Samantha, who finally reciprocated Hank's love after realizing she's been the biggest idiot in the Universe.

It's a testament to Johanna Lindsey's talent that she still managed to write an engaging story in spite of the unlikable heroine and bickerfest.

I really hated this book, so much THAT I STILL REMEMBER THE STORY. ME, THE FAMOUS SHORT-TERM-MEMORY-LOSS LADY. I STILL REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS BOOK. SO YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW MUCH I HATED IT.

So I honestly have no idea why this was a 4 star. All the old books I've read long back, and really disliked, are turning out to have 4 stars lately. I guess younger me was a really easy rater and didn't know what a brutal rater the future me would be.

i love this Book !!!!!!!!!!! i love the sound of the Hero's name on my lips. and this was the first time i bought a book by the hero's name... Hank Chavez aka Enrique Antonio De Vega Y Chavez....

i love Hank ( how many times i mentioned it ???? ) when he wanted something he would pursue it. he knew what he wanted and what to do. he wanted to be with Samantha but he knew when to push or when to stop.

when he mad at Samantha and said something badly and out of control
...it was humanly.

and yes, i love the connection, the sparkle between Samantha and Hank. seemed they didn't have to touch each other to know that they had a strong bond...
Johanna Lindsey... you did an Excellent Work ! there's no doubt about it !

When a gifted author writes a horrible book - that is like going to your favorite coffee shop and getting dish-water in your espresso.

This has to be the worst book Johanna had written.
In fact, I suspect she wrote this just because she promised the publishers something about Hank Chavez and then put together something just for the sake of it.

Briefly,

- the Heroine Samantha Kingsley : Rarely have I met a more unlikeable heroine. She is brash, unnecessarily aggressive, stupid, spoiled, irritating bee yatch... The only positive, if that counts, is she is good looking. She turns on her own father for harassing the man who kidnapped his only daughter - just cos the said man slept with her... how sensitive is that? Her anger and fight against Hank Chavez and her continued affectation of 'being a victim' in spite of the fact that she tried to shoot him at least twice - aargghhhh... Also how dumb would you've to be, to continously fight and give your cards to someone who has kidnapped you and possibly can rape you anytime he wants? you would think that a smart heroine would keep her dumb mouth shut and not constantly give away her plans of revenge to her kidnapper!

- the Hero, Hank Chavez: What the hell happened to Hank Chavez who was so interesting in "Glorious Angel"? I can understand why he wanted to buy the Hacienda, but you would think that he would've explored all options before burning and destroying stuff that one day may be his... like, I dont know, try and marry the girl? find what papa kingsley's plans were? Also its okay not to accept money from someone you saved but instead get money by looting someone else..... very heroic... The worst part for me is - his continued "crush" on a girl who tried to kill him twice and put a bullet through him at least once... no idea what "entrancing" quality he saw in the heroine..

- other useless boring spineless characters like Kingsley, Lorenzo etc etc...

And the boring wearying add-on plot about Sheldon and his fiancee - Gah!!!!

When you finish a book and find that you didn't like even 1 single character in teh whole bloody book, you know its BAD...

Wow aku sukaaaaaaaaaaaa banget buku ini. Alasannya?

2nd book in Southern series. Read 2nd time 1/25/2011

Samantha Kingsley is hard headed and seems quite vain. She knows of her beauty and don't understand why Adrien is not falling at her feet. She's in love with him and has planned to marry him. If only he would give her the time of day.

Hank Chavez is trying to regain his family's property in Mexico that was taken from him unfairly, massacred his family and resold the lands while he was imprisoned. He had thought himself in love with Angela but she had given her heart to Bradford Maitland. Now he has found a woman who has a great effect on him than even Angela. She seems to favor him as well. When he kissed her and she reacted so positively to him he was thrilled until she confessed she loved Adrien and was using Hank to make him jealous.

He was hurt and from what happened then on caused a deep love/hate relationship.

When he gets to Mexico and plans to kidnap the daughter of the man who now has his lands the daughter ends up being Samantha.

It goes on and on between these two. Both blinded by the past to almost miss what the future could mean.

One of Johanna Lindsey's worst, and that's saying something!

To be fair, I might have been in the wrong mood for one of Lindsey's books right now, but the heroine grated on me from the start. There was nothing likeable at all about the spoiled, selfish, naive, argumentative woman. I liked the hero pretty well, but I didn't believe the romance between the two at all. The chemistry was missing. I also thought the plot was forced, the dialog painful, and the author seemed to have skipped at least one scene near the end (just before I stopped reading ... I almost finished, but I couldn't quite make it).

This author is hit and miss, and you really have to be in the mood for her over-the-top style. But this failed for me even where her books usually work, so I don't recommend.

Re-read: 1 star

If there is a heroine that I have liked less, I cannot recall her. There was not one redeeming thing about this twit. Why the hero didn't let the hired killers finish the job is absolutely beyond me. Of course, he was no prize himself.

Ridiculous plot, awful heroine, meh hero. All adds up to that very rare (for me) 1 star.

Only good news - I have the book with the original, awesome cover. Too bad I'm pitching it.

This will forever be one of my favorite books. A young woman with a spicy personality is in love with her best friend's brother. He does not return the feelings at all. Then a tall dark and handsome stranger enters the picture and piques the main females interest. after some flirting and miscommunication an event takes place and after they part ways. Later in the story the tall dark stranger reappears as a bandit and aids in kidnapping the young woman for ransom. it is a great story.

I love this book. Sure it's not perfect but it was a fun read. There were some parts that I wish were written in a different way, but over-all I really love it.

I like it better than Glorious Angel. I have read it so many times that I've lost track of the exact number.

I would have wanted it to be longer and with more interactions and scenes between the lead characters that weren't always volatile. However, it is what it is and I take the good with the bad.

Considering that I keep rereading it and loving it more each time, I'm giving it a high mark.

Again, I love it. I don't care what the others say. I've learned not to take romance books too seriously. When I can't stop reading it and can't get enough, in short- when it's got my attention, that's what matters.

I wish there were more books from the Southern Series. I would happily purchase all of them, if only to read again about Hank and Sam, no matter how little their participation in the future books might be.

And as always, just like my other favorite characters, I already miss Hank Chavez and Samantha Kingsley Chavez.

For a time back in the 80’s & 90’s, my reading material of choice was frequently bodice rippers, historical fiction, and regency romances with a few contemporary best sellers thrown in for good measure. Most of them were pretty steamy (blush) &/or overly romantic, but I read them during a time in my life when I found myself as a single parent, and these books fit the bill. I found them to be highly entertaining.

I recently donated a slew of them, but I wanted to catalog them all the same. So if there is no rating here from me, it means that I don’t remember anything about the book other than I obviously read it. If there is a rating, it must have been in some way memorable for me.

I only wish that GoodReads had been around years ago so that I had some idea of the many books I have read there were thousands! I did own a copy of this book, but most others came from the library because back then I could never have afforded the 100+ books I generally read in any given year.

And by the way, I still read bodice rippers just not quite so many as I used to!

I wonder what happened to the h's friend Jeanette Allston in the past. This conversation made me curious.

´´Jeannette was shocked. “Mon Dieu! You are being too kind, chérie. The man was much too dark. Too…how can I explain? Rugged looking, too dangerous. He would make a terrible lover.
“Why do you say that?
“He would be too aggressive, too demanding. The rugged ones are always demanding.
Samantha’s eyes snapped green fire. “Do you speak from experience? she asked cuttingly, angered.
“Oui, chérie, Jeannette replied evenly, then walked away, leaving Samantha staring after her in surprise. ´´

Well, I guess this will be the first book by Johanna Lindsey I didn't like very much. Hero sees a girl, she flirts with himn a little, he thinks that she's in love with him after several days of jorney together and when she says that he's mistaken her attention for something else he almost rapes her... What!? Than it turns out that he wants her father's home so she kidnaps her and forces her to marry him... So not my kind of read.

Shes one of my favorite authors but this story is very lacklustre. I struggled to finish this story and twice, I sleep away whilst reading it which NEVER happens with a JoLin book.

This book is a series of events. One thing after another which I will not go into because it is too long to explain. But I will state a few pointers that did not agree with me:

1. Samantha keep screaming hank raped her. When that is not entirely true. She had feelings for hank when that happen although she did not want to acknowledge it. Although she kept saying No, when hank did take her, instead of her fighting him, she pulled him closer and enjoyed the mating when she should have struggled to push him away. So that's not rape. She kept screaming he raped her throughout the book. Rape is a strong word and you shouldn't say that unless it's true. The author use this word out of context like it's a trivial thing. Imagine what real rape victims are feeling. This is not a fun thing.

2. Sam and hank kept fighting and bickering. Especially sam. God she would not stop baiting and fighting hank. I grew tired of her. She is one annoying heroine. Yes I love a strong and sassy heroine but she took it to the extreme. Shes just a spoilt brat who wants everything to go get way and whatever she wants she must get.

3. The story is one confusing pot of hot mess. Too many events the author kept throwing into the mix instead of focusing on just a few events in order to get the story flowing smoothly. One page this is happening and then next page something entirely different is going on. So it's all very confusing.

Nope, this one just wasn't for me.

"Heart of Thunder" starts with a bang—literally, as ranch heiress Samantha Kingsley fires six shots into a would-be assailant that are precisely arranged to incapacitate him but not kill him. Watching this is Hank Chavez, a sometime-bandit first introduced in "Glorious Angel." Thrown together as fellow passengers on a stage to a mining town in the southwest US in 1870, the two spark off each other. When Samantha decides to use Hank to make another man jealous, desire rapidly turns to hate, which, in true Lindsey fashion, leads to sex. And revenge. And that's before fate throws Samantha and Hank a twist in the form of a land war. "Heart of Thunder" is Lindsey's seventh novel, and with it, she finally seems in command of her story—which is not without its crutches dear to the author (Lindsey loves nothing like a pregnancy to help bring her characters together; the action of the novel shifts to England close to the end of the book for a completely unnecessary and hasty adventure involving a scheming gold digger). But the sparring between the leads, constantly trying to outmaneuver the other, is fun and played out at a level less screechy than in previous novels...and how can anyone dislike a heroine who is a crack shot with a six shooter?

THIS IS RAPE, NOT ROMANCE

I wish I gave up on this book at 22% sadly I didn’t.

How is this a book? I know it is from the 80s and consent wasn't as big of a deal as it is now, but this is straight up rape! The following might be considered spoilers, but not really. After all, the blurb on the cover says that Hank "once took her virtue-- by force"... before beginning this book I assumed that meant a stolen kiss, not rape! So this is a warning for anyone thinking about reading this book... Unless you find rape romantic, pick a different book.

It already felt a bit rapey when he initially kissed her... but then when she said no, he consented. He said fine "I will wait". Silly me, I thought that this stolen kiss was what the cover referred to when it said her stolen virtue. After all, a kiss would be enough to ruin the reputation of a woman back in the day

But when she said that she did not want to marry him, then he FORCED himself on her. She made him angry and he decided that she was his to take! HE RAPED HER.

SHE WAS LITERALLY TRYING TO GET TO THE GUN IN HER PURSE TO SHOOT HIM TO DEFEND HERSELF! "She dashed wildly for her purse, but he got there first and kicked it out of her reach. She tried to run after it, for it held the only help she would get. But Hank caught her wrist and threw her to the ground, dropping between her legs, pinning her to the earth."

I had wanted to read this book because Mrs. Wheeler is seen reading it in the bathtub scene during Season 3 of Stranger Things. Of all the books, Netflix, why this one?!

I nearly stopped reading with that first rape, but I was curious to know how she could go to from being raped to falling in love with this man. Clearly she is an idiot with no respect for herself. At the end she thinks to herself “How could Hank still love her after what she had put him through? HOW CAN YOU LOVE A MAN WHO WOULD RAPE A WOMAN FOR REFUSING TO MARRY HIM?? Who raped YOU for refusing to marry him?? I am so disgusted with this book. I am sick with myself for having read it.

Ok look, I just can’t quit Johanna Lindsay. Even her early stuff like this that I would not recommend to anyone because it’s so rapey, I still finish the book.
The heroine here vacillates from a badass literally shooting a man five times because he won’t leave her alone in the opening scene, to Too Stupid To Live at a maddening pace. The first act is really interesting because it could have gone a completely different way - imagine if he married her and then she takes him home and he discovers it’s her father who owns his ranch. But instead we get: rape, kidnapping, another rape, dragging her behind his horse, rape, forcing her in to marriage, and returning her to her father. Somehow all these steps equal Profit.
And then in the end of the second and third act we introduce villains so despicable that the “hero looks like a good guy.
And yet, I still kinda wish there was a book with her stuck up English brother in the Old West. ¯\_()_/¯

When Samantha Kingsley decides to use the dark, ruggedly handsome stranger on a stagecoach to make the man she loves jealous, she has no idea how dangerous he can be.
Hank Chavez falls for the beautiful Samantha quickly. So when he finds out she is using him, his hurt and anger cause him to go to the extreme to retaliate.
Hank wants his family lands back that were stolen during the war. His plan to force the new owner to sell puts Samantha back within reach and totally in his power.
I am so glad that Johanna gave Hank his own book. I was intrigued by him in Glorious Angel. And of course, she didn't disappoint me.

War between the Sexes.

Samantha was living with her father in Texas after he Petitioned Samatha's grandmother for the custody of his two chiLoren. She let
Samantha go, but kept Sheldon who was younger. Sam was nine yrs old. He gave her all she wanted, and she was spoiled rotten.
After going to college, she stayed with her girlfriend and her brother , who she thought she was in love with.
I'm xnot telling any more for fear that I will giveaway too much information.
The book is good. I stayed up nights reading it so I wouldn't miss anything. You NEED to read thisbook, but read the first one before you read this one.

It's not terrible, but the heroine is annoying. She's too dumb to understand a guy that ignores her for two years has no interest in her. Then she is stubborn to galactic proportions. The hero gives up on her after a week and then practically rapes her because she admits to being in love with the guy who has no idea she is alive. Instead of gently explaining to our moronic heroine that her beloved prefers men, he insults and forces himself on her. The sad part was that I had LIKED him until then. Then I began to hate both of them.

Save yourself a couple of hours and skip this one.

Two recent moves unearthed two unread books by the late great Johanna LIndsey. I especially loved her Malory series. This book was published in the 1980s and perhaps I'd have felt differently had I read it then. Some books stand the test of time. This one doesn't. Both the main characters are somewhat abusive. They finally work it out, of course, but not until I, the reader, was thoroughly disgusted by both of them. Samantha remained the most annoying for the longest period of time, but Hank didn't win any prizes either, particularly early in the book.
