Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year.
The tourists think it's all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better.
Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs, fur, and all.
Eamon Underwood isn’t what you’d call a social butterfly. In fact, he avoids people altogether, outside of his job at his uncle’s funeral home, where Eamon is the mortician. For him, being around the dead is easier than being around the living. Mostly because of his very curious gift that enables him to see just how long a person has left to live. That knowledge makes personal interaction far too difficult.
Until he meets Troula Kouris. And sees…nothing.
Troula comes to Nocturne Falls to join her crazy-cat-lady aunts as an oracle, one of the rare descendants of the original Greek oracles. She’s been preparing for it all of her life. Unfortunately, just before she leaves for Nocturne Falls, she gets an ominous prediction that leads her to believe becoming an oracle could be fatal. Or maybe the real danger is the darkly handsome neighbor who lives next door.
When Troula and Eamon make a curious connection that leads to romance, it seems the fates want them together, despite the risks. Can a little orange kitten really solve all of their problems? Or will it all end in a catastrophe?

Death Dates The Oracle by Kristen Painter Nocturne Falls series #18. Paranormal romance. Can be read as a stand-alone but best if you’ve read at least a few of the initial books for the town features and main premise. Nocturne Falls. A haven for the supernatural. The town celebrates Halloween 365 days a year so that everyone can live openly.
Tru will turn 33 and get her Oracle powers this year. She’s a little afraid of her family history and what the future holds for her. A carnival Seer predicted Tru was going to meet death and she doesn’t expect that to be fun. Eamon is an undertaker in Nocturne Falls. He’s gotten into the habit of always looking down. He won’t look anyone in the eyes for fear of seeing the “clock above them that will tell Eamon exactly how much time they have left to live. It’s too hard knowing when someone will die so he spends most of his time alone, hidden in his house. Eamon can’t see a clock above Tru and they wonder if it’s because she will become an Oracle soon. Regardless, he’s very happy to be able to talk and spend time with her without worrying about her lifespan. Eamon, Tru and her Aunt’s investigate ways they may help him.
An adventure similar to prior stories in location and asking for help from local witches for a spell or knowledge. Very little actual actual town interaction until the last part of the story. Tru and Eamon and kitten Nemo make a cute unit. Especially when you find out how his death clock is managed and changed! Still a town I wish I could actually visit.
🎧 I read part of this via ebook and the last half by audiobook. The narrator is B J Harrison who does the entire series. He performed with enthusiasm and darkness as per character and his Scotsman accent, while not strong is still evident. Some of those Scottish words are strange to the Midwest US ear. Enjoyed the story and escape to Nocturne Falls. 4.5
Death Dates the Oracle is book 15 in the Nocturne Falls series. I am a HUGE fan of this series and the spin off series and adore the town and the characters. That said, this wasn’t my favorite book. I’d give the first 50% or so 2 stars, the next 30% 3 stars, and the final 20% 5 stars. Overall, I will give the book 3.5 stars. It really bothered me how prejudiced the characters were of other supernaturals in the beginning of the book. They had a whole lot of bias and the way the oracles felt about the prospect of the neighbor being a vampire didn’t sit well with me. There also seemed to be a good amount of filler in this book, especially with all of the food descriptions and the cat stuff. Some of the cat stuff was integral to the storyline, but a lot was not.
I enjoyed the main characters. They weren’t my favorite and were a bit cheesy, but they made a good match. I really loved getting to see other characters that I loved from earlier in the series. I loved that Lucien was is in this book, along with Pandora and her step-daughter, Alice Bishop, and Hugh and Delany Ellingham. It is always wonderful to get to see them again. I liked the addition of oracles in the town with Troula’s family, and the specific supernatural types(I don’t want to spoil it by naming them) that come from Eamon’s family. I also really loved that Eamon fed Nemo chicken party. Spider would definitely approve. (IYKYK)
It has no bearing on my rating of the story, but I found it crazy that Hugh Ellingham was offering full medical, dental, retirement, etc. benefits and a salary of over 200,000 USD per year for a couple of hours of time each week for a Nocturne Falls supernatural resident to play one of the town’s characters. The town has a lot of employees and I just can’t reconcile they are making enough money to pay salaries like that.
I highly recommend this series if you enjoy a little bit of clean supernatural cozy romance feel. Kristen Painter has done a wonderful job with this series. Even though this book is not my favorite and I might not be eager to read it again, I am glad that I did and it is a nice addition to the series.
The narration was wonderful as always. The same narrator narrates this entire series and he has a wonderful range of voices and accents. I own all of the Nocturne Falls audiobooks and BJ makes them come alive.
Series: Nocturne Falls #15 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
Eamon Underwood has spent his life avoiding people because of his ability to see how much time a person has left. The only people he spends time with are his Uncle Seamus and the dead he interacts with during his job as a mortician. That quickly changes though when Troula Kouris moves next door to live with her aunts.
It was so nice being back in Nocturne Falls and meeting more of its residents. Eamon has spent his life hiding from the world and struggles under the weight of his abilities. Eamon was a sweet and kind man who needed someone like Troula to break through his barriers and push him to change his fate. I knew I was going to like Eamon as soon as he showed love to a kitten and didn’t question adopting it.
Troula has come to Nocturne Falls to live with her aunts and become the next Oracle. I really liked how sweet and determined Troula was, especially since she never gave up on helping Eamon find a solution to his abilities. I also enjoyed learning about Oracles and what abilities that can have, even if we didn’t get to see Troula really using them. Also, I loved Troula’s aunts and their 15+ cats.
Troula and Eamon have an instant connection but Eamon’s abilities mean they can’t be together right away. I really enjoyed seeing these two get to know each other while keeping their distance, and work together to utilize this magical community to solve Eamon’s problems. Not only did I enjoy these two’s relationship, I also really liked the side relationship that was building between Uncle Seamus and Aunt Delly.
Painter continues to do a wonderful job expanding Nocturne Falls and introducing new paranormals. With each new book she provides us with new paranormals and unique ways in which this community comes together to help them. I really enjoyed this couple and eagerly await the next book.
We have new supernaturals in town and MAN they have some things they have to work through. Of the supernatural variety, I mean. Eamon's gift is not so great and it's pretty much made him into a hermit so he interacts with as few people as possible because seeing how long someone has left to live? Not fun IN THE SLIGHTEST.
On Tru's end, she's dealing with trying to decide if she wants to go through with the ritual that will bring her into her power. Thanks to her mom's sudden death years earlier, she has some reservations. Throw in a fortune teller's prediction that sends her spinning and she's on the fence about what she wants. The fact her next door neighbor could be danger the fortune teller spoke about AND that Tru finds him wildly attractive just muddles her even more.
Yeah, there's kind of a lot going on here. We have cats, cats, and more cats. The potential for romance between Eamon's uncle and one of Tru's aunts. A few familiar faces. A little danger. A not-so-great supernatural gift. A witchy gathering. And...well, romance between Eamon and Tru that might have to end before it even begins.
2023 bk 128 I only meant to start this one - I usually like to plug a different genre in between paranormal series. However, I kept reading and finally finished the book at 2:00 a.m. It was far too good to put down. When a young Greek Oracle to be comes to town to join her aunts' business, she meets the new neighbor. A Scottish hermit, podcaster, part time employee at his uncle's undertaking business, and someone who doesn't quite know what he is, he is stunned to realize he doesn't know how many days his new neighbor has to live. This is a book about community coming together to solve a problem and about how sometimes family can be more dangerous than friends. Well written!
I loved this book and meeting some new characters while visiting briefly with some old favorites. I hope we get to see more of Trips aunts...I would love to know the rest of their story. Whether you are already familiar with this series or you are looking for a light, fun, easy-to-read new series, you truly can't go wrong with any of the books in her Nocturnal Falls OR Shadowvale series. I devour them as quickly as I get them!
It's hard to talk about this without spoilers but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nocturne Falls books and Miss Frost books are.possibly the only "romance" books I actually enjoy. The characters are well developed, there's humour and supernatural beings, old friends from other NF books are a constant - what's not to love! Definitely recommend reading this series if you like these kind of books.
Sorry reads a little more bubble gum, Nancy Drew than I remember other books. Example- he says, I wish I could hold your hand. She replies, I wish you could too. If they were not talking about cats (seriously, a lot about cats) then they are taking about food. Specifically Greek food. Every meal, and every side dish was talked about.
Fifteenth in the Nocturne Falls magically realistic paranormal romance series and revolving around the town where Halloween is celebrated 365 days a year, where living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs, fur, and all. The couple focus is on Eamon Underwood and Troula Kouris.
My Take It’s a cute start, so normal. Then we slide into Eamon’s thoughts about his family background and his preference for no social interaction. Luckily, Painter uses third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Eamon’s and Troula’s perspectives, so we learn what each feels, thinks, and experiences.
Troula’s got plans for her potential oracle gifts. She wants to bring her family into the twenty-first century, although she does have her own questions about her family.
Prophecies of death, vampire seductions, the question of what really caused Maria’s death, oh, lol, a professional mourner is not what you’d think.
Whoa, it’s a real switch for Eamon’s brain. All his life his gift has been a curse and now he’s found a positive for it.
A nice bit in here explains how a gift varies within a family.
I did enjoy Kaley popping back in, especially when she picks up the unexpected about Delphina! Hmmm, foreshadowing?
There are a lot of ifs and maybes about what’s revealed of Eamon’s and Troula’s powers/abilities with many, many questions.
Painter’s stories are interspersed with humor, and Death Dates the Oracle is no different a domestic side that’s so sexy “Do you want to watch me do some dishes, then? How many women would love their man to suggest that . . .
The Story It’s a curse to Eamon, always seeing that hourglass over everyone’s head, knowing how long they have to live. It’s why he doesn’t go out.
Between the fortune teller predicting Troula’s death, her mother’s past history, and that vampire next door! It’s that overweening need to protect Troula that causes Cleo and Delly to betray Eamon. A betrayal that cuts deep.
And yet, forbidden fruit is so sweet.
The Characters Troula Kouris, a legacy oracle, has a birthday and a passion for cotton candy. She works as a waitress at Uncle Yanni’s restaurant where Cindy Prentiss is another waitress and Troula’s friend. Maria had been her mother. Her aunts make their living with fortune telling and soothsaying.
Troula’s Greek aunts, Cleopatra (sharper and truer predictions deeper into the future) and Delphina “Delly Kouris (sees backwards better than Cleo), live in Nocturne Falls and will take Troula as their apprentice. Living on Shadow Drive, the aunts have rescued fifteen cats, so far. There’s Dolly, Mr and Mrs Shrimps, Angel, Pickles, Captain Carrot, Big Head Ted, Princess, Dr Booples, Frankie, Little Joe, Butternut, Cher, Yardstick is a three-legged cat, Chloe . . . and two-month-old Nemo with all that aether. Oops, then there’s Leo the Lion.
Eamon Underwood, a Scot, is a reaper who can see how long a person has left to live and is the undertaker who has a podcast, Murder Most Foul. This week’s feature is Sarah Lynn Trent of Camden, Illinois; Conner is Sarah’s eight-year-old son. Seamus Underwood is Eamon’s uncle who can predict the weather and owns Underwood Funeral Home. Sharon had been Seamus wife who passed too soon. Callum, a writer and researcher of history, is a cousin researching the Underwood genealogy Eamon’s hoping he’ll find a cure. Clark is one of Eamon’s employees.
Nocturne Falls, Georgia, is . . . . . . a town where anyone can live without fear. It was founded by the Ellinghams, a family of vampires. Alice Bishop is the Ellingham witch, a very powerful one. Hugh Ellingham is married to Delaney (The Vampire's Mail Order Bride, 1) â€ Delaney owns Delaney’s Delectables, a delicious bakery and sweets shop. Zombie Donuts makes great donuts. With weird names. Curry Kitchen is a newish Indian restaurant where young Scotty Hawkes, a werewolf, does deliveries. Scotty’s dad owns Hawke’s Body Shop. The Hallowed Bean is a coffee shop. ±á´Ç·É±ô±ð°ù’s serves up fabulous pub food.
Samuel Young is in a retirement home. Mrs Flambeau is a neighbor to Cleo and Delly. Lucien Dupree is a retired reaper who owns Insomnia, a supernatural nightspot (The Reaper Rescues the Genie, 9). Imari, a retired genie, is his wife. Vincenzo was a vampire Delphina had loved.
Madame Fatima is a Seer of the Ages. Oracles are considered the mouthpieces of goddesses. The Lesser Arts of Theurgy is about ancient Greek magic. Chicken Party is a popular cat food just ask Spider and Sugar, lol. Sophie Ballentine had broken Eamon’s heart; he’d almost broken hers.
The Cover and Title The cover is a graphic with pale blue stars everywhere and a light blue cloudy sky above a cheery neighborhood of painted Victorian houses with long front yards, trees framing the houses, and that gang of rescue cats everywhere! A gray cobblestone path leads to the middle house with Eamon in a gray T-shirt and black jeans carrying the dark brown-haired Troula in a paler gray tank top, blue jeans, and gray sneakers. At the top is the title in white outlined with black, with the “O in “Oracle framing a black cat weathervane. At the bottom is an info blurb with the author’s name below that in the same color scheme with a transparent black background. To the left is the series info in yellow against a brown wooden sign beneath the carved jack-o-lantern with a black-and-white cat atop it.
The title is true enough as Eamon is dating Troula in Death Dates the Oracle.
The tourists think it's all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love a great book and this book does not disappoint! Kristen Painter does it again! This book is funny, exciting, intriguing, and a great book! And as always B.J. Harrison does this book good! I am in love with this series and author! Do yourself a favor and give this book a listen!
How could he not? Nemo is a bit of orange fluff wrapped around a kitten, and for those of you not in the know Chicken Party is Painter’s iconic canned cat food, reminiscent for me of Friskies Fish & Glop. But I digress.
Still, the many cats who pervade Kristen’s books are such entertaining characters and often , as is the case with this book, play such critical roles, that’s time I felt I mentioned them with some significance in a review. They are such awesome personalities. At times, and again, especially in this book, the cats often steal the show from the main characters. If you ask them, of course, they will be sure to tell you that that is only the right way things should be.
This is an interesting installment in the nocturne Falls universe. It feels like Kristen was trying to do something different, and the book certainly has a very distinct feel to it, and once again Painter ramps up the suspense at certain points, but none of it leads where one might expect and the ending, well HEA aside, I’ll just say I never that coming. And this despite the fact that Kristen hits at the outcome long in advance.
All in all, as always, well done, ma’am! Very well done!
Most of the books in this series are charming and inoffensive. They’re not quite mysteries, but the conflict is easily resolved and every book has a HEA. This book is a bit worse than a dud.
The Aunts are cat hoarders. And bigots. The “meet cute is the fmc being an irresponsible ditz while leaning hard into the same cat hoarding and bigotry shown by her aunts. After one of the Aunts magically assaults Eamon for the crime of being a vampire - which he is not -, he gets a one-sentence “sorry and all is forgiven.
What is most disappointing, though, is that Eamon never accepts who he is or his supernatural ability and the authors throws in a magic panacea to end things. At one point he realises that he could help people using his gift, but the author walks away from that storyline entirely in favour of going an entirely different direction. Yet, none of it is clever. He is supposed to be awake for 24 hours before the spell, but it’s okay that he slept for a few hours. The witches need aether for their spell, but apparently don’t know what aether is or where to get it.
I like Kristen Painter's books but they are sometimes hit or miss. This one was written rather childishly, like maybe it was for tweens. Tru is about to become an oracle, one of the speakers for the Greek gods of old. She is a bit nervous since her mother died and the belief is her brain couldn't handle the power. She moves in with her two aunts, who have at least 15 cats. They are adorable older ladies. They live next door to two Scottish funeral directors--Seamus and his nephew, Eamon. Eamon lives his life in seclusion because he has the ability to see an hour glass over people's heads, telling him how much time they have left to live. Understandably he doesn't want to know this. When Tru accidentally lets one of her aunts' cats out, she ends up in Eamon's yard. She has been warned he is a vampire, and she is terrified when he comes outside to see why she is in his yard at night. They fall in love. Like I said, this was a very PG romance, rather boring.
I love the Nocturne Falls Universe, but I must say the last two or three books haven´t been as satisfactory as the first books in the series. Why not if the writing is as good as ever? Well, because the characters´ situations are not engaging enough. This one is an example. It runs for 49 chapters, and nothing really happens until chapter 39, and the "danger" is solved in only ONE chapter. The rest could have been told in half the chapters, making the story much more agile. I must confess that I love cats, and the story has lots and lots of cats! Even a pregnant mama cat! But no problems at all with them. As I said, the story is bland. I am now reading the next book in the series, and it seems to promise more. I hope so. Anyway, if you love cats and don´t mind a very slow developing story, with almost no danger or angst, go ahead.
Troula Kouris has just turned 33 and it’s time for her to become her generations legacy oracle. So, she moves in with her two eccentric aunts, and all their cats, in Nocturne Falls for training.
For generations in Scotland, the men in the Underwood family have had inconsequential supernatural gifts. Some weak, some strange and some dangerous. Eamon’s is being able to see an hourglass over somebody’s head showing how long that person will live. It’s created a lot of problems so he’s now living with his uncle Seamus in Nocturne Falls working at his funeral parlor. Afterall, they’re already dead.
Loved it. All the cats, the oracle stuff and Eamon’s new ability.
Fave scenes: Tru & Eamon chasing Nemo, Seamus meeting Nemo, the cat nursery and Hugh Ellingham’s offer.
Eamon, a mortician, is cursed to shun all people except his family. His gift allows him to see how much time each person has left to live. He creates podcasts with intricate details of unsolved murder mysteries in the hope that it will jolt memories in the audience. And this would eventually help solve the cases.Ìý
Troula has waited all her life to be the third oracle that her family has been hoping for. She has not given a second thought about what could happen if she can't be an Oracle. On her 33rd birthday, Troula meets a fortune teller who predicts death for her.
Troula is worried about her future and bumps into Eamon. Resolved to help each other out, they seek the help of other Nocturne Falls inhabitants.Ìý
The fifteenth installment of Nocturne Falls imbues the familiar cozy spirit and makes a good addition to the series.Ìý
Another couple finds their destiny in Nocturne Falls. Tru is unsure if she should go through with the ceremony that she has been prepared for all her life, becoming an Oracle after her 33rd birthday. Her wonderful aunts, and their next door neighbors, help her figure it out. Eamon has to keep his distance, even though he wants nothing more than to spend time with Tru. He can't risk her losing any of her life (sands through the hourglass), by being close to him. Will the witches be able to help him before it is too late? Now I need to go get some good Greek food!!
As always, Kristen gave us another amazing story that BJ brought to life. I always feel like I'm watching a movie play out in my head. we've been in NF so long, I feel like I can envision every part of it, and the people.
Well written, great pace, and kept me hooked the entire way through.
And BJ, once again, gave us an amazing performance.
My rating scale: 5 - I loved this book and it brought out true emotion in me (laughter, anger, a good cry, etc) 4 - I loved this book. 3 - I liked this book. 2 - I didn't really care for this book. 1 - I did not like this book at all and probably did not finish it.
Well we are at the end of the series...thus far, I hope that Kristen Painter makes more!
This one was... a little disappointing. I don't think it's what I expected. It wasn't bad but after the previous book it was a little let down. I like the aunt's and their cats lol, although my eyes watered with allergies everytime they mentioned how many cats they had.
Eamon and Toula were good but I didn't feel any chemistry between them. I feel like Eamon's uncle and Toula's aunt's romance was more believable. I think my favorite part was how they made the ceremony seem when Toula became an oracle, it was very beautiful!
I love all the books in the Nocturne Falls PNR series and DEATH DATES THE ORACLE was a cute romance! Eamon Underwood and his family of undertakers are unique supernaturals. Their magic has gotten mixed up over the years because so many of their ancestors have intermingled (which you would think would be a good thing, but I guess in magic it is not.) So now Eamon has a little bit of a bunch of different kinds of magic in his blood and it is causing him problems, specifically that he can see an hourglass above people and he knows when they will die. This is a trope I never get tired of. I always enjoy seeing how each author will do it and I loved how it was done here. Tru, the female heroine is an oracle in training and she has some doubts about whether she wants to be an oracle or not. I loved Tru and I loved her Greek heritage, her aunts she comes to stay with and especially all their CATS. So cute! Eamon and Tru were really cute together and I loved the way the supernatural part of this book resolved itself. I did NOT see that one coming! 4/5 stars.
One thing I really love about this series is that each book can be read as a standalone novel. The creativity of this series is astounding. Death Dates the Oracle is Eamon and Tru's story. Tru is descendent from a line of oracles and is about to go through the ceremony to be one herself. Eamon can tell how much time a person has left to live. A fortune teller predicts that Tru will meet Death. Can these two have their happily ever after?
Simply fun, great story, good romance, and very creative world building. Just love this series!
Another fun book in the Nocturne Falls series! Tru and Eamon are wonderful characters this story can be read and enjoyed by all age groups plenty of mystery romance and twists I loved seeing other characters show up. The aunts deserve a book as well fun to read about the cats on the family! Cats always make a home a home! Fast reading made me smile reading Eamon and shamus and how they interact with the women well worth reading this book
Troula is about to join the family business and become an oracle, but a lighthearted visit to a carnival fortuneteller leads to a dark premonition. Eamon has been getting by the best he can with his depressing abilities. When the two meet thanks to a naughty kitten, both their lives will be saved and improved. I loved the family dynamic between Tru and her aunts and Eamon and his uncle. I didn’t think a mortician could be sexy, but the author succeeded delightfully with our Scottish hero.
I've read and enjoyed all of the Nocturne Falls series and I've noticed that no matter what type of characters or situation is involved it never fails to bring a smile to my face. There's always some kind of mystery or problem that needs solved but getting there is always a fun ride. I look forward to (hopefully) catching up with some side characters we meet in this installment as well as some very important companions.
Welcome back to Nocturne Falls! This book tells the story of Eaman and Truola. Truola comes to Nocturne Falls to stay with her aunts and go through the Oracle ceremony. Eaman doesn’t know what type of supernatural he is but he can see the lives of others slipping away in hourglasses above their heads. Through twists, turns, and cats, both Eaman and Truola overcome their challenges. I was so happy to be back in Nocturne Falls and can’t wait for the next adventure there.
Another sweet little tale from Nocturne Falls! Tru is an oracle to be, that may not become, because just as she embarks on the adventure of a lifetime she is warned that she will meet Death. Of course the term “death can be interpreted several ways, which is the fun of the whole book. With a few twists and turns sprinkled throughout, not only does Tru meet death several ways, she gets the happily ever after she deserves!
This was brilliant. All through it I thought for sure I knew what would happen. boy, was I wrong. And the ending, what a nice surprise. I loved it so much. The characters were amazing and we saw some of the ones from former books. You can read this as a stand alone but will really love all the books and it also makes the other characters more fun.
The narration was to die for. I love this narrator. He is a favorite of mine. Just gives you a feel good warm feeling.
Story is cute enough and I've read enough of these to generally expect what I find. But I'm not really sure how much I liked the resolution of the Male MC's problems. Cute in a way, but if we liken his infliction as a disability then the resolution is the removal of disability and that's a romance genre treatment that is overdone and too typical and too ableist. At least it wasn't magic sex fix as plot device.
This was not my favorite book of the series, but maybe because it felt like it ended too soon. I loved both characters a lot! However, I missed the feeling and lifestyle of going into town, the magic of being able to not hide their true identity, and the yummy food from Howlers (the one time they went, they didn’t even get dessert…so sad). I also missed the magic. I wish we saw their own magic a little more as well. What kept me ready was the characters and Nemo. Loved them all.
