Pamuk's novels include Silent House, The White Castle, The Black Book, The New Life, My Name Is Red and Snow. He is the Robert Yik-Fong Tam Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University, where he teaches writing and comparative literature. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 2018.
Of partial Circassian descent and born in Istanbul, Pamuk is the first Turkish Nobel laureate. He is also the recipient of numerous other literary awards. My Name Is Red won the 2002 Prix du Meilleur Livre 脡tranger, 2002 Premio Grinzane Cavour and 2003 International Dublin Literary Award.
The European Writers' Parliament came about as a result of a joint proposal by Pamuk and Jos茅 Saramago. Pamuk's willingness to write books about contentious historical and political events put him at risk of censure in his homeland. In 2005, a lawyer sued him over a statement acknowledging the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire. Pamuk said his intention had been to highlight issues of freedom of speech in Turkey. The court initially declined to hear the case, but in 2011 Pamuk was ordered to pay 6,000 liras in compensation for having insulted the plaintiffs' honor.

If you like Pamuk's novels, make this a gift to yourself. It's a compendium of thoughts from the man. Some of them are weird like on the days he does no writing. If you're a writer they'll be familiar but that anguish aside, his childhood memories and talk of food, family and the country he writes about and its place in the world, will surely satisfy.
Page after page (it's a hefty book) is written in a tone which is quiet. Simply that. This is not someone who ever sought fame or celebrity. He just wants and needs to write.
No scandals. Few laughs. It is pensive as the hours, ten a day, that might produce half a page on his desk. When the book ends with his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize for Literature, you might think this is the time he'll give himself a pat. No chance. Instead of taking about himself, it's his father we learn about. Orhan Pamuk is one likeable and modest man.

Other Colors, though a collection of short essays, is almost more satisfying than devouring one of Pamuk's novels because it gives us such an exquisite background on Pamuk's literary ideals and the Turkish zeitgeist. It's difficult for me to explain the appeal of Pamuk without falling all over myself in platitudes. It's almost as if Pamuk's writing is the Platonic ideal of writing鈥攅very word is exactly right, every idea is perfectly expressed, and you think, "That's precisely it! No one could have said it better!" I'd recommend this collection to anyone who'd appreciate greater insight into Pamuk's writing style and intentions鈥攂ut even if you haven't read any of Pamuk's novels, dip into this collection for his excellent essays on Turkey's art, its architecture, and its complicated relationship with the West.

As I sit down to review this book, I feel this compassion inside me. It could be due to the influence and a personal connection this text infused in me and led me to believe every word in it as if it was written by me. This book takes you back and forth between Orhan's childhood memories, his dreams and his toiled days as an author. It actually delighted me to read up from the notes beautifully compiled under the emblem of Other Colors which the author carelessly scribbled away as random stray thoughts while he was busy writing up long protracted novels.
After reading Snow, this book left an indelible imprint on me about the author. Other Colours completed the tout ensemble of a visage of an author who is now much more personal to me than just a Nobel Prize winner. The book compiles up essays written by Pamuk on Turkey's 1999 earthquake, his encounter with the West, his life as a painter and then a writer, his love for Persian art and paintings and his endless rant on his favourite authors and books. Pamuk's natural way of writing made me exclaim everytime at the end of each essay "He couldn't have said it any better!" Turkey which is so concealed under the western culture can be best explored in Pamuk's writing and couldn't have been highlighted in any other best way possible.
The fun doesn't end until the last pages which entail an exuberantly delightful Nobel Prize lecture by Pamuk. He totally nailed it. So even if you can't find Other Colours on your local bookstores, you must try to get your hands on this utterly engaging piece of writing at least.

Really, I can鈥檛 believe this guy won the Nobel Prize. Let me swiftly qualify this to say Pamuk won the Big Prize for novels, and this is not a novel, and I have not read any of his novels, so I am being grossly unfair here. Until I have read a novel or two I will withdraw my Nobel Prize dismay.
As for the book at had, how shall I start? These are autobiographical, literary, and current events essays. Most of them are very short, just a couple-three pages or so. Despite promising moments, most of them have a disposable-journalism feel to them, like hack book reviews that US newspapers used to run back in the old days.
How about some quotes?
鈥淢y Father鈥� 鈥� 鈥淏ut he didn鈥檛 read the books as I did, voraciously and dizzy with excitement; he read them for pleasure鈥︹€� (p. 13)
鈥淗ow I Got Rid of Some of My Books鈥� (last sentence) 鈥淭his is how my Turkish literature shelves are quickly losing works by half-witted, mediocre, moderately successful, bald, male, degenerate writers between the ages of fifty and seventy.鈥� (p. 109)
鈥淥n Reading: Words or Images鈥� (first sentence) 鈥淭o carry a book in your pocket or in your bag, particularly in times of sadness, is to be in possession of another world, a world that can bring you happiness.鈥� (p. 110)
A lot of people like this kind of 鈥渂ook lover鈥檚鈥� prattle. Sometimes I do, when I have a hangover or otherwise feel less than complete. But again, this guy won the Nobel Prize! Is it asking too much for some, I don鈥檛 know, profundity? Pamuk comes close sometimes 鈥� when he talks about the ambiguity he feels about the books he owns 鈥� how one has books for no apparent reason, or for reasons long gone (in 鈥淗ow I Got Rid of Some of My Books鈥� quoted above). But just when things get going good, he gives in to a clich茅, or a tiny bit of self-congratulatory 鈥渨it.鈥� Wit! I wish! That bit about 鈥渕ediocre鈥� Turkish writers is probably supposed to be funny, but it strikes me as petty and ridiculous (bald? Shakespeare was bald!). This is not funny. It is not criticism. It is crap. And the book is studded with stuff like this.
This is another Allen Co. Public Library discard 鈥� a beautiful hardback (thank you Knopf!) that looks as if it had never been read. I鈥檒l bet their copy of Lionel Trilling鈥檚 The Liberal Imagination is broken at the spine and covered in spots and water-damaged pucker marks. Or the Heckman Bindery has encased it in immortal buckram thirty years ago. Not Other Colors. I assume there is another copy on the shelves 鈥� Fort Wayne鈥檚 ambitious readers probably reserved it in advance of publication, so ACPL ordered some extra copies. Thus the discard. One copy鈥檚 enough. This thing鈥檚 disposable. What a disappointment.
Final admission of failure: I made it only about halfway through this book. Maybe the second half got a lot better. Maybe.

Until the time I am writing down this review, I still cannot finish My Name is Red. Pamuk鈥檚 novels are not easy to read, I admit that. However, I find his essays very enjoyable and I can say that besides Orwell, Pamuk is my favourite essay writer. He writes various kinds of topic in Other Colours, like his daughter being sulky, the earthquake in Turkey and paintings. All are written elegantly and most importantly, even though some of his essays are very critical and about 鈥榟eavy鈥� things, they are easy to digest.
Being a Turk, Pamuk lives and is trapped between two world, the East and the West. This identity crisis topic often appears in his essays. Pamuk might be raised in a secular Westernized environment, yet it did not make him despise his roots. In fact, he embraces the two worlds. He considers these two worlds as a richness that must be cherished, instead to be damned. It is nice to see how a modern writer like him still remembers and admires his tradition. Talking about Turkey, you cannot leave out Istanbul, the site where the two cultures meet. Pamuk talks about his city from interesting viewpoints, one of which is after the earthquake that hit Istanbul so hard. And here I have to jot down one of my fav quotations (since there are many of them!):
The ruins that cause us such pain and open the road to forgetfulness become, in the end, the lots on which others can found new dreams. (69)
In this essay collection, Pamuk also discusses the story behind his books. From here, I can know more about the writing process. It is indeed such a hard struggle and a proof that being a true writer is not easy. Writing is not only about putting down words into a blank paper; it also deals with your emotion and your soul.
This book is ended with Pamuk鈥檚 Nobel Speech entitled My Father鈥檚 Suitcase. Basically, Pamuk talks about how his dad really influences him as a writer, and the speech is so touching I almost shed a tear. His father always said to him that he would win a Nobel prize in the future. Pamuk鈥檚 dad鈥檚 dream did come true, but sadly, he could not witness that. And closing the last page, I was left with this amazing feeling in my heart. If Mr. Pamuk can read this review, I will say that you, sir, has inspired me to write more. You are such a gift to this chaotic world.

13/01/08 Endnote: This book, especially the Nobel Lecture, has left me excitingly inspired and exhilarated. What a passionate and dedicated depiction of a person faithfully surrendered to his fate as a writer!

Tomorrow I am starting a journey which will break my daily routine for a while. I set off all other "currently-reading" books and set on this one. It will accompany me on the way. Already finished chapter one (The Implied Author) which reminds me why I enviously like his authorship and himself as a writer. Without pretending to be like him, I think I share many personal symptoms he describes such as "in order to be happy I must have my daily dose of literature", a tendency (or his word: ability) "to forget the world in the way a child does, to be irresponsible and delight in it, to play around with the rules of the known world", the urgency to always have a personal space in which he can be alone with his thoughts and dreams, etc.
This particular chapter, for me, achieved what he set out as an indicator to write well, which is to allow the reader to say, "I was going to say the same thing myself, but I couldn't allow myself to be that childish."
And I can go to bed now, ... smiling.

The political part touches the issues faced by Muslim immigrants in Germany. Identity. I can relate with this issue. I understand the sorrow, fear, and longings....

Writings on Life, Art, Books and Cities
The Implied Author
This is a book made of ideas, images and fragments of life that have still not found their way into one of my novels
To describe such epiphanies, such curious moments when truth is somehow illuminated, Virginia Woolf once used the term "moments of being"
For this he needs paper, a pen, and the optimism of a child looking at the universe for the first time
To talk about Istanbul, or to discuss my favorite books, authors and paintings, has for me always an excuse to talk about my life
My true vocation, the thing that binds me to life, is writing novels
In order to be happy I must have my daily dose of literature
For thirty years I have spent an average of ten hours a day alone in a room (to write)
Days are specially difficult when you don't do any writing
The real hunger here is not for literature but for a room where I can be alone with my thoughts.
In such a room I can invent beautiful dreams
I make the new worlds from the stuff of the known world
The pleasure I take in this confession and the fear I feel speaking honestly about myself - together they lead me to a serious and important insight
Writing is a solace, even a remedy
A novel is inspired by ideas, passions, furies and desires - this all we know. To please our lovers, to belittle our enemies, to extol something we adore, to delight in speaking authoritatively about something of which we know nothing, to take pleasures in time lost and remembered, to dream of making love or reading or engaging with politics, to indulge in one's particular worries, one's personal habits these and any number of other obscure or even nonsensical desires are what shape us, in ways both clear and mysterious
These same desires inspire the daydream to which we give voice
We surrender to this mysterious wind like a captain who has no idea where he's bound
To write a novel is to be open to these desires, winds and inspirations
If I am in the middle of a novel and writing well, I enter easily into its dreams
(Novels) offer the writer solid and sound world in which to lose himself and seek happiness
Most of the time I have no desire to return to the real life or to reach the end of the novel
(While writing it is) as if I am in a world where I can see into every house, car ship, and building because they are all made of glass; they have begun to reveal to me their secrets

For eight often frustrating years, I thought my rating and review of this collection would be 3 stars at most and the comment: "I must simply prefer Pamuk's fiction." I struggled with this collection tremendously, more than once relegating it to a high shelf in the bookcase. When I finished the book this week, I gave some thought to what had made it so difficult for me to get through this collection.
Ultimately, I realized that my problems with the essays stemmed, ironically, from my memory of just how strongly Pamuk's fiction affects me: when I bought and opened Snow, in 2004, I was so captivated by its start that I read it for 3 days straight, taking leave from work to finish it, and taking notes about it on whatever paper I had with me at the time.
Naturally, it was Snow that I brought with me to the 2010 National Book Festival in Washington D.C.. I was looking forward to having Pamuk, one of my literary heroes, sign one of my all-time favorite works. Until... it turned out I couldn't ask him to sign a book previously purchased elsewhere. After running to the book table to find a book I was allowed to have him sign (i.e. one the Festival was selling), I grabbed Other Colors, mostly because I knew I didn't already own a copy.
I flipped through the table of contents and was excited to see a chapter of essays dedicated to "Books and Reading," including 3 essays on Dostoevsky. Once I returned home, however, I decided to exercise discipline in reading the collection. This is the reason reaching the "Books and Reading" chapter required wading through what seemed like endless essays about the 1999 earthquake in Istanbul. I'm sure the tragedies of the earthquake were real, and I'm sure Pamuk's reflections on that time are meaningful, but I was impatient - I wanted to get to the treasure: Pamuk's thoughts on Dostoevsky.
"Books and Reading" more than fulfilled its promise. It put me on a Dostoevsky tear, in fact: I paused "Other Colors" to read Pevear and Volokhonsky's "Demons." I re-read a few Bakhtin essays and then re-read a few entire Bakhtin books. In the meantime, "Other Colors" languished on the bookshelf again. I had already read the best part, what else could be left?
When I finished the collection this past Tuesday, I was a different person than the one who bought the book eight years ago. I was more patient with the essays' varied material, for one thing. I was more appreciative of Pamuk's experience of life, for another. I no longer read his essays with frustration, comparing the quiet, somewhat repetitive collection to his highly imaginative and always compelling fiction. It seemed there was a certain extent to which the collection itself had changed me.
What surprised me the most when I was finishing the collection, however, was what awaited me at its very end. The last two pieces in the collection are "To Look Out the Window," the story referenced in the collection's title) and "My Father's Suitcase," Orhan Pamuk's 2006 Nobel Prize Lecture. These two pieces, especially when read in conjunction, are some of the most beautiful and deeply affecting observations and meditations I have ever encountered regarding childhood life and the riches and roles of literature. They alone were worth the price of the book, the run to the book table, and the eight years of frustration that preceded my reading them.
I highly recommend (many parts of) this collection. Be warned, however: my experience of Pamuk has never been one of simply reading. His words, both fiction and non-fiction, have disrupted my life in more ways than one, sometimes for days, and sometimes for years at a time. May he do the same for you.
