When I review a book, I usually look at two things, first is if the story is good and second is if the characters are likeable.
1. The story
I liked the story very much, the suspense was exciting and as they're coming to reach a conclusion I feel that I wanna find it out with them. Sometimes I can't put the book down because I wanna know what's next. Cassie's inside conflict was kind of ridiculous for me but the issue about the evil spirit was kind of cool.
2. The characters
I tried really really hard to like Cassie, sure she's got some good qualities but I thought she was really dumb. I mean, c'mon?! Dont you watch movies? Falling for a blackmail is like the stupidest thing you could ever do. I think "protecting" Diana was just an excuse but in fact she can't take responsibilities for her own actions. She doesn't want Diana to find out because she'll hate her. I also didn't like the fact that she's a jealous, insecure traitor, always comparing herself to Diana. Im sorry, I really tried but she doesn't click to me.
Now, we're on to one of my favorite characters.. NICK.. haha! I don't know why, he's so mysterious and quiet but he's always there when he's needed. :D
Finally, I really enjoyed reading it. Its definitely better than the first one.
This book was even better than the first one! We get to know more things about the people who form the circle something i really needed because i couldn't distinguish them in the first book. Twelve characters were a lot for me to handle and i'm really impressed with the author because not only she manages to involve them all in the action but she also made each of them unique.
I'm glad Cassie got more stronger in this book both in spirit and in magic, seeing the main character being weak all the time in the first book was not so fun. What's also exciting is the fact that Cassie develops a darker side which made her a more interesting character. Then ending too was so intense, i can't wait to read the third book!
It's a quick and easy read full of tropes including girl-hate. The writing is easily digestible and the pacing is fast and concise which makes it hard to DNF. I consider this series to be the best of the worst. There are some unique twists to old tropes, like Cassie's decision making. All of the characters are unbelievable. We don't learn about anyone's motivations except the protagonist's. There is not even a response to people dying in town. On two occasions the protagonists, including our main "good girl" protagonist, casually consider killing someone! Cheating is a major part of the story.
Grazie a dio, l'ho preso in biblio. Se accettate un consiglio, non compratelo.
Read this whole series back when i was 13-14 and i was BLOWN away by it.... so much so i DESPERATELY wanted to be a witch... hmmm... maybe i just wanted Adam.... :)
Wicked, she could almost hear Faye chuckling throatily. You're not evil, you're just wicked . . . like me.
The Club is divided between Team Faye and Team Diana. Cassie, who loves Diana very dearly, is hiding a naughty secret that would destroy Diana and cause everyone to hate her if they found out. Unfortunately, the one person who knows Cassie's secret is Faye. Faye being the crazy bad bitch that she is, blackmails Cassie into being her own personal puppet.
After a homecoming dance gone awry, another unexplained murder, and a rigged Circle meeting that appoints Faye as new leader, the Circle gets in over their heads. Halloween (Samhain) is upon New Salem and an evil spirit is unleashed. Another Circle member finds their Book of Shadows, and Cassie is on the verge of losing everything she holds dear.
Because of my bet with my friend, I continued to read this book, and essentially the most interesting happens in the last few chapters of the book. This isn't to say that it wasn't predictable. For example, who could predict that Cassie's crush on Adam would be found out by evil Faye, who's been the main bully in the first book, and that she'd use that crush against Cassie? And naturally instead of confessing all (as she already did to Adam), did Cassie come clean and put an end to the blackmail? Of course not. That would have ended the first book at 350 words instead of 300 words and 2 more books.
Who could have seen the unforeseen evil from the crystal skull that they actively tracked down in order to feed their thirst for more power, even though they're (according to the blurb) the most popular sought-after club at school already? That's right; the crystal skull is evil and is unleashed in a flurry of black shadows when they form a circle and do a fancy ritual to awaken it. It goes on to attack Cassie's grandmother, who in her dying moments reveals that Cassie comes from the line of the most power witches with the greatest insight. (Snort.) Please remember this line when I review the next book.
I skipped over most of middle in the book and don't regret it.
El nu-i sincer, ea-l crede și-n stele.

This is book 2 in The Secret Circle series. See my review of book 1 here. This book was just as good as the first in the series. The tension is building as Cassie is black mailed into helping Faye wrestle power away from Diana. Cassie finds herself hurting those she cares most about and also suffers a great loss in her family. Cassie’s grandmother also reveals important information that none of the Circle knew about previously in hopes it will help them battle the dark force that was released.
Faye is one scary witch and you have to wonder how sane is she? Poor Cassie finds herself stuck between a rock and a hard place and must decide if she will let Faye hurt Diana by revealing the connection between Cassie and Adam or hurt Diana herself by supporting Faye in her bid for power. Deborah, Nick and the Henderson brothers are much more likeable in this book and the suspense of finding out whose side they will end up on as well keeps you hooked. It’s been so long since I’ve read these books that I can’t wait to read the last book in the trilogy.
*WARNING: This section contains spoilers for the first book!*
Now that Cassie is officially in 'The Club' and now known as one of the 'in' group at school she finds life so much better, she feels welcome and wanted, not like a diseaseeveryoneis trying to avoid. Unfortunately for her she isdealingwith her desires for Adam, Diana's boyfriend, whom she fell in love with on the beach last summer (One meeting is all it took...). She loves Diana and she would never want to do anything to hurt her so she avoids Adam at all costs.
Meanwhile, the coven are still dealing with the crystal skull and the dark magic that was released from it the first time they tried to activate it. People keep dying and they have no idea why or what the connection is so they're trying to do everything they can to figure out this mess.
In this book Cassie was a lot stronger than she was in the first book. You see her grow and change. That's nice to see because I know that if she hadn't of grownI would have gotten tired of her and the way she always needed to lean on people for support. You see her take control of herself in this book.
Diana is still as strong and as lovely as ever. Although she is seen as a bit toonaïvein this book, too trusting but she has no reason not to trust anyone. So I feel it's completely justified and that she's not naïve she just completely and wholly trusts the people she's close to. As you should.
Adam is strong and someone you could trust. He puts people before himself. I love that, he's definitely the one to call if you need help. In this book we get to see way more of him, he's a good guy yet also comes across as kind of mysterious.
Nick is mysterious buttemperamental. Still he grows in this book and becomes a little more patient andinterestedin the coven. He's so mysterious that I've developed a little crush on him and I really want something to happen between him and Cassie! What is it about guys that are mysterious? I guess it's because they just don't tell anyone what they're thinking or feeling you kind of have the fight for it so it's not easy, or something like that.
Faye is as bitchy and nasty as ever. Yet I still don't hate her, you can see that she has this nice side to her. You can even see why she does the things she does to get what she wants. They're completely selfish reasons but those reasons always have to do with herself, they're never just so she makes people feel horrible. That's a by-product of her actions...
We get to see a bit more of everyone else in the coven without getting lost at who's who, I think that's very important because when there's so many characters in a book if they're not described well or there isn't a subtle hint at who they are you get lost very easily and can't remember who's who and who is what to each other. That didn't happen in this book. I found everything to be clear. Personally I really liked this book too. I think it was as good as the first one in every way. There was some thing about the writing of this book that just drew me in, in every moment I was asking questions or trying to find out the answers to questions I had already asked. Who was this person? What did this mean? I was trying to put the pieces together to figure out what wasgoingon but some of the clues were so subtle that by the end of the book I was still surprised. I love it when you haven't guessed the reveal at all in a book even though those clues and hints are there.
I haven't read all of L. J. Smith's books but I am really enjoying this series so I think I will check out her other books as well. I think this book was entertaining, a fun read and a book that I could come home to and just relax with. There wasn't anything that I found hard to read, I wasn't disgusted or confused by anything I was just a little shocked. A little shock is always good.
I was pretty interested in the content too, like all the little witchery stuff, the crystals they used for certain things, the herbs they used for certain things. I kind of wish I had had an aunt or something that wasinterestedin that stuff and had taught me all about it as I grew up. And by 'stuff' I mean the good uses for crystals and herbs etc .
I really liked this book, just as much as the first one so I'm pretty excited to read the next book to see what happens! This was written in 1992.
As I was reading this book it definitely gave off this vibe of the 90's. Like the way people thought, the fact no one had cell phones at school or at all. You had to call someone from an actual phone that was plugged in to the wall, if you were by yourself and realised you were in danger you were pretty much screwed since you couldn't just txt someone. So that's not good but it was true.
It felt like life was less cluttered with technology and everyone was closer and communicated better because youhad to go over to someone's house to see them, youhad to call someone on the phone to talk to them you couldn't just txt them, you had to make the effort. I never call people these days to talk to them, but I think I will start. I kind of miss that communication.
I also got the impression that the kids/teenagers treated their elders with respect, more respect than I see a lot of kids/teenagers do these days. That's a sad thought to think that I don't know of many young people thatuse manners profusely or respect their elders. Perhaps that's just the area I live in, or perhaps that's just what I choose to see.Now I'm just rambling.
As I envisioned everything it reminded me of the 90's and my childhood. The excitement of the outdoors, or sleep overs with friends where we would get up to mischief like midnight snacks or talk about our crushes the whole night, there was no bitching about anyone and there was no spending hours and hours on the computer...I was only 2 in 1992 so I guess I'm thinking more of 1998 but still, it was this weird nostalgic feeling that I got.
Life these days doesn't feel anything like it did back then. Maybe that's because I was a kid and saw life through a different set of eyes. Obviously I see it differently now but it's just interesting to remember how much this world has changed from twenty years a go.
Also, the male protagonists in this book compared to the YA books now are so different. Well that's how I feel. They aren't treating the girls like crap, deliberatelyhurting them or ignoring them, they aren't masking their feelings for them, they're honest and straight forward about it. And I bet if they did the girls wouldn't take it, they would stand up for themselves. Maybe that's only in this book but it all feels less complicated. Where haschivalrygone?! I sound like I'm really old now...
Cassie is being blackmailed by Faye. But doing what Faye asks will be the ultimate form of betrayal. Will Cassie go through with it? If she doesn't, she runs the risk of destroying her relationship with Diana, and perhaps the entire Circle. But if she does, something evil might be unleashed on New Salem. An old and very powerful evil.
In my review of , I mentioned I'm biased on this trilogy. Biased as hell. Wish I wasn't, but I am.
For one thing, I was obsessed with the TV show. I also happen to love just abut all of 's books. Most of all, though, I love love love witches. I don't care if they're green and fly around on brooms like the Wicked Witch of the West. I don't care if they use wands and are incredibly smart like Hermione. I don't care if they are blonde and own a talking cat like Sabrina the Teenage Witch. And I don't care if they're young, beautiful, selfish, and headed for destruction like the witches in The Secret Circle trilogy.
I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. Most people that rate this book 4-5 stars read it during their teenage years and rate it so high because it brings back nostalgia. They read it as teenagers, some even pre-teens and just loved it. Some even went ahead and re-read it now as adults and found it to be simple and childish. That's understandable.
The thing is, I read this just today. I'm in my 20s and I am rating this 5 stars. I'll even go ahead and say that I would give it 5 stars even if I wasn't biased. Why? Because this book is awesome. It is. The ending was so exciting to me and I'm glad there is still one remaining book in this series for me to read.
I am not exaggerating when I say this book blew me away. It has now become one of my favorite books OF ALL TIME. It's short and, yes I'll admit it, pretty simple. I read it in a matter of hours and the further I got into the story, the more invested I became.
But it had it's flaws. It really did. But damn it if I didn't find the flaws absolutely hilarious. I loved the fact that three people were murdered in or near the school but it is never really investigated. The police show up, don't find any clues and that's that. They don't conduct investigations, there are no suspects, no arrests, nothing. The school doesn't even get shut down or anything. I can't express to you how hilarious this is to me. Even thinking about it now makes me laugh. The funny thing is, had this happened in any other book, any other series, I would've undoubtedly bitched about it to the end of the world and back.
The apathy of the characters really shines through when another student dies and one of the girls says “What about the Halloween dance? “Guys, another person at our school just died and that's sad and all, but I don't want to miss the dance. I already bought the perfect shoes and everything! Okay, so that last part isn't an exact quote, but you get it.
Cassie makes some really stupid decisions. Like when she goes to the cemetery in the middle of the night. Even though just a few hours earlier they saw a mysterious and possibly dangerous ghost lurking around. Girl....
Like I said, these things didn't bother me at all. I relished in this book's flaws. I love it more BECAUSE of it's flaws.
The main character of this book, Cassie, did a 180 attitude wise. Last book she was naïve and grateful for the kindness people showed her, and shy. In this book she's mean. She's jumpy and catty and easily ticked off and... more daring, I guess.
What really surprised me , though, was the fact that halfway through the book I realized I actually liked Faye. Which is bizarre. Faye is a bitch. Faye is annoying. Faye always ends a sentence with a “throaty chuckle or some weird kind of laugh that I can't remember how to describe. It's annoying as fuck. But I like her. Underneath all that wickedness, oozing sexuality, and beauty is a sad, sad lady. Maybe she's sad because her mom is always sick and unavailable to her. I don't know. I just want to say: I see through you, Faye Chamberlain. All you really need is a hug and someone to be there for you. I'm not saying I want to be the one to hug you or be there for you, I'm just saying, you need someone to love you unconditionally. Go out and find yourself someone nice to love.
This book also helped me realize that I am falling for Nick. And for no good reason, either. He's still a godforsaken enigma. I don't know anything about him. Other than he's a tall, sullen, brooding, quiet, indifferent, alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, handsome devil. And that there's a slight chance he miiiiight like Cassie. And now I want them to end up together, dammit! I mean, yeah, I like Adam but he's just so... good. Which translates to boring. I need adventure and a tiny little bit of romance and unpredictability. I mean, Cassie needs adventure and a tiny little bit of romance and unpredictability. Hehe.
Hear my plea, oh great L.J. Smith! Allow Cassie and Nick to be together forever!
The Captive is now a favorite of mine. I don't care how stupid or childish it seems. I love it. I can't wait to read !
Quotes: ”I don't know what's going on, and it's none of my business, anyway. But I'd like to go to the dance with you. -pg. 195
“It's yours, Cassie. From my grandmother to me to you. You have the sight and the power, as I did, as your mother does. But you can't run away like she did. You have to stay here and face him.
“Never be afraid, Cassie. There's nothing frightening in the dark if you just face it. -pg. 292
Rereading this series now, last time (2011-2012-ish) I didn’t make it through all the books, according to my bookmark I only made it about 4.5 chapters into THE POWER before I gave up. This time around the tv-show isn’t as fresh in my head and I’m not struggling to keep them apart (they are SO different, I remember just being confused by the books last time). TSC really is a 90s/soap opera/ teenage/ drama/witchy mashup thingy...which doesn’t mean that it’s particularly GOOD, but rather pretty bad... but entertaining in a nostalgic kinda way. Like a good old 90s pop song (you’ll sing and dance your ass off if it comes on but you’d NEVER listen to it at home). Well, this is what this series is to me. Let’s hope I’ll make it through the last book this time around.
And again: fuck you, Adam. I hate girls fighting over some looser guy, blaming and hating on each other while NO ONE HOLDS THE DUDE ACCOUNTABLE. Ugh.
I did like this, but there was a lack of magic for me. And it felt weird how our MC was ok with letting a magical death object that kills people... because she didn't want her friend to know she had a crush on her friend's boyfriend... it just does not hold up. Especially given how heavily we focus on how forgiving her friend's circle is so... it just feels very obvious that they WOULD forgive/not care.
But I do like how this Circle has conflicting personalities and a few people aren't fully on "bad" or "good".
The Secret Circle series by L.J. Smith was always my favorite series of hers so when I decided to read it again I was worried that it would be awful and ruin my fond memories. While I did find it to be less good than I remembered I still quite enjoyed the characters and story even if the writing style was not exactly to my liking.
Although i love this book and the authors descriptions and writing... Cassie can sometimes just be so thick and annoying.....
Faye's blackmail (Just be honest and then avoid each other) Cassie has ended up doing alot more Damage to Diana than just admitting this in the start.....
And cmon Nick is so much more scrummy......
Still this book had lots of twists and turns while cassie finds herself deeper in the group.
