No Idea What I’m Doing But F*ck It

Rate this book
In his poetry book, Ron documents the process of his inner and outer journey of self-discovery. This journey involved awakening to the fact that he wanted more out of life, the internal struggle he faced while convincing himself to leave the only home he knew, and eventually departing his comfort zone by buying a one-way plane ticket. This collection of prose explores the obstacles we must face and figure out for ourselves, the discovery of our true purpose, and the realization that many things in life are more straightforward than we imagine them to be, despite how unnecessarily complicated we make them.

At the age of 22, Ron packed his bags and bought a one-way ticket out of the place he lived in his entire life.

Thinking back, “I remember when I was on the plane by myself, leaving for the first time with no destination in mind, there was no fear. It felt strangely liberating. And it was in those few starting hours of my journey that I already knew that I’ve made the right choice he said.

“Time flies when you’re on the road. All you do is try to live in the moment and focus on the next thing, and before you know it years have passed and you have come a long way.

While on the road, Ron found inspiration in his journey and started documenting his thoughts publicly on Instagram. It was also during this time that he found an interest in writing and in 2020, he started a separate account solely dedicated to posting his writings @ronwritings.

In less than 2 years, @ronwritings amassed over 600k followers and in December 2021, Ron released his debut book no idea what I’m doing but f*ck it.

i have very mixed feelings on this book. i originally picked up this book because i love the author’s instagram account (@ronwritings) and i love reading what he posts and following his journey. however, i was disappointed when i started reading through the book. i expected it to be a bit more autobiographical, but it instead turned its attention towards the reader and told the reader vague, repetitive advice. in fact, this whole book can be described as a glorified quote book. most pages are only 2-6 lines long and consist of only one drawn-out sentence. however, the book did have the occassional page with more substance and some pages even told a short story from his own experiences. overall, i expected a book to have more substance than a collection of instagram posts, but i was wrong.

a lot of the poems/pages didn’t seem to follow a theme besides falling under a vague umbrella of “advice. which doesn’t sound right for a book that is quite literally titled “no idea what i’m doing but f*** it. it also seemed very all-over-the-place. the poems could’ve been organized better.

all negativity aside, i can’t say that i did not enjoy the book. it did leave me more inspired than i was before i read it. this book was also originally published in 2021 (if i recall correctly), so i assume ron’s style has changed a lot since then. if ron decided to publish another book, i will gladly read it.

in short: the book lacked substance and organization, but was inspiring nonetheless. i expected more but will still look forward to more from this author.

I read this for my poetry book club. I'm thankful for the selection. When I graduated from high school, my parents gave me a book called "If You Don't Know Where You Are Going, You Will Probably End Up Somewhere Else." They gave it to others who graduated at the same time. It ticked my best friend off and probably offended some other people. I wasn't overly motivated to read it at the time. I wasn't known for my great attitude. In fact, my orchestra director told my parents I had a bad attitude. Thanks, Mrs. F. I don't know; I think I had a great attitude. That being said, I should have read the book. I probably would have ended up somewhere else. Now there is this book: "No Idea What I'm Doing but ... " This book truly connected with me on a personal level. I will be rereading this because so many parts deeply spoke to me. It is cathartic and provides a sense of emotional release. Over the years, I've grown and evolved, and this book invites me to embrace my true self, pursue my aspirations, and be the person I am meant to be without worrying about the opinions of others who try to confine me.

I’ve been following Ron on IG for some time now and I have long wanted a copy of this book. I'm thrilled to finally read it. This is another book I plan to revisit occasionally to remind myself that it's perfectly okay to be authentic, act on my desires because it's my life, understand that messing up is sometimes inevitable, and that taking action is always better than doing nothing.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes that I will consistently use as advice for myself and my peers, mostly regarding taking a leap:

- “What are you more afraid of, is it really change or things staying the same?
- “The only mistake you can make is if you don’t make a decision and you end up having neither.
- “How many times have you ignored your intuition because you were too afraid of what someone else might think?.
- “Instead of letting someone who has no idea tell you what to do why not just fuck it up yourself
anyway?
- “Say yes to the things you want to say yes to.
- “How different would your life be if you did all the things you told yourself you would?
- “Make your ideas come to life.
- “You don’t need more to get started, you need to start.

📖 This poetry book found me at the right time. The poems are simple, short and sweet. But they ask questions of the reader that demand reflecting deeply on desires, motivations, anxieties, and choices.

In a way this poetry book is about doubt, and how to overcome imposter syndrome or decision paralysis. It’s for the moments when we don’t know and we are unhappy with our present season. We really don’t have control over very many things and so it’s best to change our perspective knowing our circumstances don’t always change. But it’s also important to know that we have the power to make different decisions and choose a different life for ourselves.

This is a book for the transitional seasons, for the doubting days, and for the moments in life when we find ourselves lost. Ron Lim encourages embracing the in-between, the unknown, and the wandering. I really appreciated the way these poems encouraged me to take more risks and embrace the ambiguity of life.

When the title of this book, I knew I had to read it, so I decided to get it. And man, I felt it was truly what I needed in a year where things felt so uncertain. It's so nice to see a book talking about these uncertainties and yet how things will still get better. I will definitely keep this as one of my favorites!

Remember, you only fail when you give up.
Otherwise, it’s only a process of getting there.
