It's definitely different, and some of the stories are great, but there are a lot of mediocre ones too. Kneller's Happy Campers 鈥 like the film adaptation, Wristcutters 鈥 is really wonderful.

A collection of Jewish, Israeli and surreal short stories sounded just like my kind of thing.听Etgar Keret's听The Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God & Other Storiesstings and thrills with fierce fables of modern life. And I had no idea听going into this, but it turned out that I was already familiar with the author's writing from school back when we'd read "Breaking the Pig." So when I stumbled upon said听short story in here, I was beyond joyful to have everything come back.

The author, without a doubt, knows his stuff.听Brief, intense, painfully funny, and shockingly honest, Keret's stories are snapshots that illuminate with intelligence and wit the hidden truths of life. From having a shitty angel friend (鈥淭hat鈥檚 when he finally understood that of all the things the angel had told him, nothing was true. That he wasn鈥檛 even an angel, just a liar with wings.鈥)听to joining the circus to Holocaust Memorial Day to someone's struggle with their听compulsive good-heartedness, these swift tales captivated me and reminded me of everything I know and everything I still don't.

With all that I loved, however, I still think I made a mistake deciding to read the English translation of this collection because it听kind of made the writing lose a bit of its magic. From what I recall听of reading Keret in听school, his听humor is better听conveyed in the original language. And I just听kept thinking throughout that I should鈥檝e read this in Hebrew.

But on a more positive note, I cherished听it immensely when strong emotions where evoked out of me while reading. I laughed, raged, rolled my eyes and connected with so many stories and little moments within them.
Moments such as听capturing the love we feel for听home-cooked meals:

鈥淭here鈥檚 something nice about home cooking. I mean, it鈥檚 hard to explain, but there鈥檚 something special about it, a feeling. As if your stomach can figure out that it鈥檚 food you didn鈥檛 have to pay for, that someone actually made it out of love. 鈥

To feeling that palpable听rage against Nazi German bastards, especially on Holocaust Memorial Day:

鈥淭hen an old skinny man got on the stage and told us what bastards and murderers the Nazis were and how he took revenge on them, and even strangled a soldier with his own hands until he died. Jerby, who was sitting next to me, said the old man was lying; the way he looks, there鈥檚 no way he can make any soldier bite the dust. But I looked the old man in the eye and believed him. He had so much anger in his eyes, that all the violent rage of iron-pumping hoods I鈥檝e seen seemed like small change in comparison.鈥

鈥淔inally, when he finished telling us what he had done during the Holocaust, the old man said that what we had just heard was relevant not only to the past but also for what goes on now, because the Germans still exist and still have a state. He said he was never going to forgive them, and that he hoped we, too, would never ever go visit their country. Because when he went with his parents to Germany fifty years ago everything looked nice, but it ended in hell. People have short memories, he said, especially when bad things are concerned. People tend to forget, he said, but you won鈥檛 forget. Every time you see a German, you鈥檒l remember what I told you. Every time you see German products, be it television (since most televisions here are made by German manufacturers) or anything else, you鈥檒l always remember that underneath the elegant wrapping are hidden parts and tubes made of bones and skin and flesh of dead Jews.鈥

And then wrapping the collection up with a good ol' case of tragicomedy when a man is fed up of being compared his whole life to another听鈥淛ust like me, only a tiny bit better鈥:

鈥淲e鈥檙e about to land, sir. I insist you return to your seat and fasten your seatbelt, like听.听.听. True, she went on to say 鈥渓ike all the other passengers,鈥 but what I saw in her eyes was Katzenstein. I pushed down on the lever and forced the door open with my shoulder. I was perfectly calm as I was sucked out, leaving all hell behind me.
Suicide is still considered a dreadful sin in the Afterlife. I begged them to try and understand, but they wouldn鈥檛 listen. As they were dragging me to Hell, there was Katzenstein. Him and the other passengers, waving at me through the window of the tour bus that was taking them to Heaven. The plane had crashed as it hit the ground, about fifteen minutes after I鈥檇 bailed out. A rare malfunction. One in a million. If only I鈥檇 stuck it out in my seat another few seconds, like all the other passengers. Like Katzenstein.鈥

All in all: These听stories were听real and听vulgar and undeniably sincere.听I can't wait to read more of听Keret's writing in the near future.

3.5/5 stars

I don't think that this book should be read in one or two sittings. Reading these very short stories one right after another starts to take something away from the stories. Since most of the stories are only a couple of pages long, there is only so many times in a short period of time when I could enjoy ironic twists. I wanted to throw myself on the ground and beg for no more irony.

- i Gogol Bordello !-
#

C鈥櫭 una bella differenza. La differenza di una parola.

Eh gi脿 c'猫 una bella differenza!

Another fabulous collection of warped and wonderful short stories from Israel.

As I mentioned on my review of Etgar Keret writes stories unlike anybody else, stories that are often strange and slightly fantastical, funny, dark, impressive and affecting and this collection is no different in that respect.

That collection is one of the best books I've read in 2012 and so when Leah brought home a tattered and spine broken copy of this one, found thrown away by a careless reader, I was over the moon. Discovering that it also included the novella 'Knellers Happy Campers' was the cherry on top. Knellers is the book that the beautiful offbeat indie movie was based on and I've been intrigued by the original story from the moment I saw the film.

Amongst the consistently great stuff contained in this collection the standout short stories for me were Breaking The Pig and Shoes, two utterly charming stories that understand, and have a great affection for, the vagaries of the human mind and human bahaviour, with their magical realism they encapsulate the ouevre of Keret so completely.

The main event was a slight letdown after the movie and the long wait to read the story; Knellers is essentially a Keret style short story extended to 60 pages, so it is warped and wonderful and charming and funny and with a message but it also lacks some of the beauty and joy of the movie which is most definitely not a Keret movie.

As a complete work this collection is not as enjoyable or complete as his later work but as an example of a great talents early work it is remarkable with plenty to recommend.

-an膽eo koji 拧e膰e me膽u ljudima i skriva svoja krila ispod kaputa,

How can you not want to read a book with that title? Unfortunately, 鈥淭he Story about a Bus Driver Who Wanted to Be God鈥 is the first story and probably the best, so it鈥檚 all a slight downhill journey from there. That story stars a bus driver who鈥檚 weighing justice versus mercy in his response to one lovelorn passenger, and retribution is a recurring element in the remainder of the book. Most stories are just three to five pages long. Important characters include an angel who can鈥檛 fly, visitors from the mouth of Hell in Uzbekistan, and an Israeli ex-military type with the ironic surname of Goodman who鈥檚 hired to assassinate a Texas minister for $30,000. You can never predict what decisions people will make, Keret seems to be emphasizing, or how they鈥檒l choose to justify themselves; 鈥淓verything in life is just luck.鈥

Aside from the title story, I particularly liked 鈥淧ipes,鈥 in which the narrator makes himself a giant pipe through which to escape to Heaven, a place for misfits who鈥檝e never found a way to be happy on Earth. Twisted biblical allusions like this are rife, including 鈥淧lague of the Firstborn. A few stories have a folktale-like ambiance. It felt like there were too many first-person narrators, though, and too many repeating plots: 鈥淕ood Intentions鈥 takes up the same contract killing theme as 鈥淕oodman,鈥 while both 鈥淜atzenstein鈥 and 鈥淛etlag鈥 involve ejection from a plane. I read everything bar the 86-page novella Kneller鈥檚 Happy Campers; after so much flash fiction I wasn鈥檛 prepared to change pace so dramatically. So I鈥檝e marked this as unfinished even though I read 110 pages in total. I鈥檇 gladly try something else by the author, though. (Read in translation from the Hebrew.)

Short story collections are tricky. Rarely is there a collection where all the stories included are good. At least, not outside of Hemingway, Raymond Carver, and the best of Alice Munro. And I'm sorry to say that most of the stories in "The Bus Driver Who Wanted To Be God" aren't very good at all, just very boring.

Etgar Keret has been getting a lot of attention in light of his recently released collection, . Since I didn't want to plunk down the $27 retail price on the new collection, I decided better to pick up a used copy of this well regarded collection from 2001.

Now, perhaps it's not fair of me to write off a short story writer for a collection compiled almost 20 years ago, but there's so little here that inspires further reading that it's hard for me to think about giving Keret another chance. Keret's stories have got a strange vibe to them, and I do like that. The problem is that they end almost as strangely, which is to say, without much of an ending at all.

The title story is by far the best and from there the stories seem to decrease in value until finally we come to an overly long multi-part story towards the end which, after a few pages, I couldn't help but skim.

What a sad thing shattered hopes are ...

It was very different. Here's a quick like/ dislike breakdown though, in case anyone is interested:

dislikes:
1. Some of the stories just ended abruptly. I think this is really Keret's style and it is intentional more than it is lazy. But a lot of times a story would be over and I would feel like, "...SO??"
2. Some of the language in the book sounds racist or homophobic. I don't think Keret himself is racist or homophobic, but he feels the need to portray a lot of "macho" guys in his stories, and it gets old.

likes:
1. The stories are very short. This makes the book go by at an enjoyable pace. It's like seeing several different snapshots. Like a frozen moment of a story, a painting of a story.
2. Keret creates some very unusual and clever situations and settings. One of my favorite stories (actually one of the longest, too) in the book is the last one, about the afterlife for people who commit suicide. It was very surreal and bizarre. And he rags on Kurt Cobain a little bit, who is a bit of a whiny bitch in the afterlife. This should surprise no one.
3. I find it interesting that Keret seems very Israeli. For example, the names he uses in his stories all sound very Israeli. And the fact that all citizens are required to spend some time in the military comes into play in almost every story. But not in a contrived way. Just as if being in the military is a fact of life. Everyone in the stories is in it or will be someday, or used to be, or knows someone who is.

other things:
1. This isn't a dislike of mine personally, but sometimes the stories seem really superficial. I think Keret has a bit of an existentialist element to his work. Some people aren't really into this, so it's more of a warning than a dislike of my own.
2. Keret's stories tend to be a bit on the dark side. Which is rather unsurprising, since the illustration on the cover shows a smiley cartoon character blowing his brains out. So, don't read this book if you're in the mood for something uplifting. It is humorous in its own way, and clever, but not exactly fun.

Piol铆n: "脷tero".
Mahometanos: "La chaladura de Nimrod".
Malitos: "Pizzer铆a Kamikaze".

just finished reading the 1st book of 2016. another work by my newly fav author, Etgar Keret.

compared to the previous work of him that i've read, 'the girl on the fridge', this one is more surreal, more serious, much weirder, more hilarious, and yet also more subtle.

i'm really into his stories and looking forward to read all of his works!
