Rattling Bones

Rattling Bones is a collection of short stories with a dark edge. Meant for the chicklit reader who likes her fiction a little dark in places. She doesn't mind a death or two and she certainly doesn't mind a few 'bad words'

Thea is a NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY Bestselling Author. She used to have a black lab at her feet when she wrote, warming up the calves. It can be cold in rural Nova Scotia. Now it's just a cuppa tea keeping her warm.

Her urban fantasy pulses with dark themes and action-packed intrigue. Her characters are always deeply wounded creatures struggling for redemption.

Rattling Bones by Thea Atkinson is a short story collection of dark stories and usually I love this type of thing and love her books but not so much this book. Not one of her best books. Most of the stories were really too strange and didn't make too much sense, even trying to stretch my imagination. I adore her other books so try those books and not this one!

Curiosity drew me to Thea Atkinson's collection of short stories, although I don't normally read horror or dark fiction. Once immersed however, I found the cover and title strangely misleading, for nothing as obvious as dry skeletons rises from stone sarcophaghi to rattle through the virtual pages.

The author is mistress of the subtle, twisted tale - a member perhaps of the Method school of writing - if one exists. Thea Atkinson gets under the skin of her protagonists so effectively that sometimes these stories feel like dark biographies. Each unfolds, leading the reader through the nightmare of unknown lives; strategically placed clues draw you in and demand participation, yet in spite of this the endings often surprise. The writing is damned good too.

Rattling Bones by Thea Atkinson is a collection of short stories. They focus on the ways that our love for the people surrounding us, along with our dreams and wishes, can change the way we that view life, or even death. If you like sad stories that leave you somewhat uncomfortable, this book has several of those. This collection of stories may not be cheery, but it is full of tales that reflect how our simplest actions are truly driven by our deepest love.

These stories give an amazing insightful account of devastating pain and suffering. The author holds nothing back, her ability to write, and depict, the often tortured side of being human is nothing short of genius. I was most impressed by the realistic display and exploration of contradiction within each grim tale. This is not a book for those whom are easily upset, nevertheless, the writing is awesome and intense, and for many, well worth experiencing the pain.

Somewhat sad and dreary short story collection. I took out of this book to recognize the good in your own life because people have had to live in harsh and poor conditions throughout humanity.

These stories touched on poverty, hunger, freezing in the depths of winter and death. All the basics that we have to have to survive, the characters depict what life was life for those who lacked these basic needs.
Very well written, love flowed from the pages as mothers cared for their children and their husbands, husbands loved and grieved for their wives etc.

This book makes you think hard about the life you are living and what we have to be grateful for.

Gifted by the author for an honest review.

"Rattling Bones" by Thea Atkinson is my first read by this author. I was given the book for an honest review. I liked it,and it is a little different from the books I normally read. Each story is a fast read and is interesting in their own way. You'll get reads about dealing with a death in the family, and knowing that it is coming. Poverty, hunger, and if you're looking for a happy ending kind of book this is not it. You get the view of what life actually is all about and get to see love, dreams, and wishes for life, but in a different way than the classic romance story. There is much more to each of the 10 short stories. If you're looking for something that is quick, and that will tug at your heart this is it.

I received this book as a gift. It is classified as chick lit. I have to disagree, I think a more accurate description is dark vignettes. Little stories with twists that you may or may not have seen coming. The were interesting and a few of them were very intriguing. Especially the last story. I could really see that one being expanded upon and created into a novel if you had enough conflicts and challenges to make it interesting. If you like dark short stories, this one is for you. Definitely sending this one to a few people I know. Enjoy!
