Although Nothomb claims to have been born in Japan, she actually began living in Japan at the age of two until she was five years old. Subsequently, she lived in China, New York, Bangladesh, Burma, the United Kingdom (Coventry) and Laos.
She is from a distinguished Belgian political family; she is notably the grand-niece of Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb, a Belgian foreign minister (1980-1981). Her first novel, Hygi猫ne de l'assassin, was published in 1992. Since then, she has published approximately one novel per year with a.o. Les Catilinaires (1995), Stupeur Et Tremblements (1999) and M茅taphysique des tubes (2000).
She has been awarded numerous prizes, including the 1999 Grand Prix du roman de l'Acad茅mie fran莽aise; the Prix Ren茅-Fallet; and twice the Prix Alain-Fournier.
While in Japan, she attended a local school and learned Japanese. When she was five the family moved to China. "Quitter le Japon fut pour moi un arrachement" ("Leaving Japan was a wrenching separation for me") she writes in Fear and Trembling. Nothomb moved often, and did not live in Europe until she was 17, when she moved to Brussels. There, she reportedly felt as much a stranger as everywhere else. She studied philology at the Universit茅 Libre de Bruxelles. After some family tensions, she returned to Japan to work in a big Japanese company in Tokyo. Her experience of this time is told in Fear and Trembling. She has written a romanticized biography (Robert des noms propres) for the French female singer RoBERT in 2002 and during the period 2000-2002 she wrote the lyrics for nine tracks of the same artist. Many ideas inserted in her books come from the conversations she had with an Italian man, from late eighties and during the nineties. She used the French Minitel, while he used the Italian Videotel system, connected with the French one. They never met personally.

You only had one job.
Young Am茅lie-san, recently returned to Japan, through great pains secures a one-year job contract as a translator at the prestigious Yumimoto Corporation. What follows is a mildly rocky start to a full speed spiral down the corporate ladder to the worst experience of her life.
An amazingly engaging and hilarious start, five star worth. Around the middle however, as events start turning for the worse, it became a bit difficult to read and highly exasperating sometimes. All the characters, like Ms. Fubuki Mori, and especially Mr. Omochi, were extremely unlikable. Mr. Tenshi was the only redeemable one, yet sadly his protagonism was too short lived. One is left to wonder how someone like President Haneda got to the top.
This was greatly enlightening about certain aspects of the Japanese work life, and especially about a western trying to accommodate to their customs. I think the inability to defend yourself, or others, is a free pass to a world of mistreatment. Some very excruciating moments, and a few ones way over the top. Some of it may be overly exaggerated of course, yet sadly I鈥檝e watched certain movies, heard several things, and even read enough news to know the harsh reality described in this book is partly true, if not completely.
I find the Japanese culture fascinating, although the corporate side, if it resembles anything like this, is one aspect I truly wish I never EVER have to face. Still, good enough to spend the time, fun, and valuable. Could greatly appeal to someone interested in the subject.
*** Fear and Trembling (2003) is THE perfect adaptation. I mean except for a few aerial shots, a few childhood flashbacks and the music score, everything is 100% the book, without any deviations whatsoever. I don鈥檛 think there was a single dialog line not extracted directly from the book. Amazingly, Fubuki, Omochi, Tenshi and Haneda were exactly as I had pictured them. Not necessarily a great film, 7/10, but by far the most faithful adaptation I鈥檝e ever seen methinks.

Joven Am茅lie-san, recientemente regresada a Jap贸n, con grandes esfuerzos logra asegurarse un contrato de trabajo de un a帽o como traductora en la prestigiosa Corporaci贸n Yumimoto. Lo que sigue es un levemente inestable comienzo hacia una r谩pida espiral en ca铆da libre de la escalera corporativa hasta la peor pesadilla de su vida.
Un asombrosamente atrapante e hilarante comienzo, merecedora de cinco estrellas. Alcanzando la mitad sin embargo, cuando los eventos empiezan a empeorar, se vuelve un poco dif铆cil de leer y altamente exasperante a veces. Todos los personajes, como la Sta. Fubuki Mori, y especialmente el Sr. Omochi, fueron extremadamente desagradables. El Sr. Tenshi era el 煤nico rescatable, pero tristemente su protagonismo fue breve. Uno queda pregunt谩ndose c贸mo alguien como el Presidente Haneda lleg贸 hasta la cima.
Esto fue enormemente enriquecedor sobre ciertos aspectos de la vida laboral japonesa, y especialmente sobre un occidental tratando de acomodarse a sus costumbres. Encuentro la cultura japonesa fascinante, pero el lado corporativo, si se asemeja aunque sea un poquito a esto, es un aspecto que verdaderamente espero nunca JAMAS tener que enfrentar. Aun as铆, suficientemente bueno para pasar el rato, divertido, y valioso. Podr铆a ser muy atrayente para alguien interesado en el tema.
*** Estupor y temblores (2003) es LA perfecta adaptaci贸n. O sea excepto por algunas tomas a茅reas, un par de escenas de la ni帽ez, y la m煤sica, todo es 100% el libro, sin ning煤n tipo de desviaci贸n en absoluto. Creo que no hubo ni una sola l铆nea de dialogo que no fuera extra铆da directamente del libro. Asombrosamente, Fubuki, Omochi, Tenshi y Haneda fueron exactamente como los hab铆a imaginado. No necesariamente un gran film, 7/10, pero creo que por lejos la m谩s fiel adaptaci贸n que he visto jam谩s.

Fear and Trembling by Amelie Nothomb
Something bothers me a lot about this novel.
It鈥檚 a short novel 鈥� 130 pages that can be read at a sitting. Translated from the French, it was a big hit in France and it won a couple of literary prizes when published in 1999. The main character is a young Belgian woman, of college age we assume, who lives in Japan and takes a job for a year in a Japanese corporation. (Just like the Belgian author who was born in Japan.)
She has a woman supervisor (very unusual in Japan) and she becomes infatuated with her. To make a short story even shorter --- she screws up everything so badly -- copying, filing, serving tea, simple accounting tasks, that she works her way all the way down to cleaning restrooms. She screws that up too.
In Japanese culture, she can鈥檛 be fired for a year, nor can she quit without disgrace before her contract is up, so there鈥檚 no immediate way out. She and her supervisor seem to agree that she鈥檚 鈥渞etarded.鈥� Although we know she not really because she did an excellent job in writing a report with a lot of analysis that got her and several supervisors in trouble with the firm. So she wants us to know that she鈥檚 really a brilliant person when challenged with a task equal to her intelligence -- and that may be -- but we also suspect she may simply be a person without the discipline to apply herself to tasks she doesn鈥檛 like.
Along the way we get an absolutely devastating picture of Japanese corporate culture that chews people up and spits them out. Everything only flows one way --- top down. Supervisors scream at underlings and they just 鈥渢ake it.鈥� You never explain or offer a word in your defense; you never speak up for someone else. There is one horrendous scene where the young woman鈥檚 female supervisor is dressed down by her male supervisor in front of everyone in the office and the scene it is portrayed as a 鈥渧erbal rape鈥� and the female literally collapses under the assault.
As another example of the clash of cultures, at one point the young woman worker asks 鈥淗ow else are we going to work things out if we don鈥檛 talk?鈥� The response she receives is 鈥淚f you DO talk, there鈥檚 serious chance you鈥檒l make things worse.鈥�
Women, in particular, are under tremendous constraints in Japanese culture. I鈥檒l just touch on few things because there鈥檚 about eight pages elaborating on this. You are ashamed if you are not married by age 25, 鈥測our expiration date.鈥� If you laugh you don鈥檛 look dignified; if you betray your feelings you look coarse, if you enjoy eating, you鈥檙e a pig. When you go to the bathroom, never let them hear you tinkle. Like I say, this goes on for several more pages. And she says the culture for a male is a little better but fundamentally the same.
The author gives us a summary of her thoughts about Japanese culture near the end of the story. First she tells us about the title: 鈥淎ncient Japanese culture stipulated that the Emperor be addressed with 鈥榝ear and trembling.鈥� 鈥淓xistence, in Japan, is an extension of The Company鈥� My suffering was no worse than theirs; it was just more degrading. And yet I did not envy them. They were a miserable as I鈥�.They were giving up their lives for nothing, and they knew it.鈥� And 鈥� A Japanese person genuinely apologizing happens about once a century.鈥�
And this: 鈥淓veryone knows that Japan has the highest suicide rate of any country in the world. What surprised me was that suicides were not more common.鈥� Well this one is FAKE news --- Japan鈥檚 suicide rate is about 30th among countries; for example, Russia鈥檚 rate is about double that of Japan. (See Wikipedia, suicide rates by country.)
So what bothers me is that this book seems like a trashing of Japanese culture. Can it really be that bad? Is our system (the West鈥檚) that much better? The answer is obvious for the author, but I鈥檓 not so sure.

My Japanese friend Yukie said I had to read this if I wanted to understand how a Japanese job worked. And indeed I do feel I have a great deal more insight into it!
Rule number 1: NEVER take initiative for anything you're not supposed to take initiative for. The heroine finds this out the hard way. She's just started working for this Japanese company. She speaks fluent Japanese, French and English, so of course, like any Westerner, she's looking for an opportunity to impress her new bosses. A colleague goes off on vacation, there's a piece of work that's been left hanging which requires knowledge of French, and she sees her chance.
Oh dear. Not only does she get no praise; she, and the misguided person who helped her, are suddenly in huge trouble. But she still doesn't understand how things work, and makes one mistake after another, being moved further down the ladder each time. In the end, her job consists of changing the toilet paper in the men's room.
The book is supposed to be based on the author's experiences when working in Japan, and is quite funny. I started reading it on a transatlantic flight, and had finished before I arrived. Strongly recommended if you're interested in Japan and the Japanese.

I must say, I was really surprised by this book. I work for a Japanese company here in Vancouver and I have noticed that my Japanese co-workers have to adhere to different standards and rules from the rest of us (we don鈥檛 question it, what can you do?). It鈥檚 been interesting working there because half of my co-workers are Japanese, the other half aren鈥檛. We鈥檝e had to adapt to each other鈥檚 cultures and I think we do so quite well. It does feel like we鈥檙e split into two camps and I have often been approached by a Japanese co-worker to say something to the boss, something I can get away with saying as I鈥檓 not Japanese.
So because of my experiences working with the Japanese, and talking to them about corporate culture in Japan, I shouldn鈥檛 have been too shocked by the content of this book but I was. Yumimoto Corporation sounds like hell to me and I felt sorry, for the most part, for Amelie, the Belgian girl who works there and quickly gets on the bad side of her female co-worker, who is villainous but feels the need to be as she is a woman working in a male-dominated world.
I鈥檓 still not completely convinced by Amelie though. She was born in Japan, lived there until she was 5 years old, yet when she moves back to Japan, she seems to have accepted the Japanese corporate life way too easily. As a westerner, Amelie is used to taking the initiative. That doesn鈥檛 fly in Japan, apparently. She becomes a total pushover. It doesn鈥檛 sound plausible that a western woman would do that without a fight.
This book was meant to be satirical. Not that I found too much of it funny, it was more sad than anything. And I was surprised by the comments Nothomb made about Japanese society, how there鈥檚 only two ways out for women; marriage or suicide. I found that a bit harsh. It was weird because on one hand she loves Japanese culture, on the other hand she is so scathing of it.
I realize I鈥檝e gone off topic and I鈥檓 not talking so much about the book now. Well, I did like the book. It was a quick read and Nothomb does have a graceful writing style. However, a few things didn鈥檛 sit right with me.

I had mixed expectations when approaching Belgium's enfant terrible, having heard plenty of praise and criticism in equal measure. So it was with fear and trembling I approached Nothomb's Prix du roman de l'Acad茅mie fran莽aise winning novel , aware of the author's reputation as a quirky, hip and contemporary writer. Little did I know that the novel, itself highly autobiographical, charting the struggles of a Belgian worker, Am茅lie, within the various rigidities of Japanese corporate culture, would be caustic in its entirety.
Nothomb embarrasses herself with her critique of a culture which she evidently plucks from stereotypes, never once examining the possible grains of truth within these superficial constructions of Japanese identity, but inflating them for crass, comedic effect. Supposedly a book highlighting the difficult intricacies of Japanese corporate culture, instead criticises the difficulty for somebody foreign, in this case Am茅lie, to function within a world of explicit hierarchy and tradition. Alas, Nothomb's novel is an attack on difference; the fish-out-of-water story is so thinly disguised as to milk the largest amount of sympathy for the 'Westerner' who must survive - but never become at one with - a culture that is described as evil, torturous and unthinking. Not only is the Yumimoto corporation hellish but the people within it Nothomb paints as the antithesis of the poor and victimised main character. Am茅lie's character never escapes the one-dimensional boundary of her girlish nature, both silly and supercilious; the divide between West and East, which many GR reviews pick up on, only paint Am茅lie as good, whilst the Japanese workers as unfair tyrants. Under constant attack, Am茅lie defends her privileged position with lines such as, 'Believe it or not, honor does exist in the West too'. Alas, the novel is riddled with such hyperbole and stilted dialogue. The back and forth arguments which make up the majority of the novel are crude in their rough satire, revealing Nothomb as nothing more than a juvenile [and somewhat self-obsessed] writer. This grating chatty style, written without much thought, is both absurd and borders on outright discomfort at certain points when Nothomb, who obviously has little appreciation for political correctness, touches upon some troubling descriptions: there is the running joke that Am茅lie is suffering from 'developmental disorders'; whilst the berating of co-worker, Fubiki, by her boss Mister Omochi is described as a rape; and later Fubiki, angry, walks towards Am茅lie 'with Hiroshima in her right eye and Nagasaki in her left.' There comes a point where Nothomb's writing becomes inflammatory minus rationality; the humour in the novel - perhaps its only redeeming point - comes from lazy depictions of the Japanese workers. In essence, is a slapstick novel, quirky yes, but just as tawdry, guns blazing and without purpose.
For such a short novel Nothomb surprisingly manages to include plenty of stereotypes: Mister Omochi is referenced as the 'Obese one' who is always 'dementedly screaming', whilst Mr Saito is another demonic boss of Am茅lie's, forcing her to print again and again a heavy golf manual. Some critics have called the novel erotic, but fail to mention that the only power of sexuality given is towards Am茅lie. Only she, as the foreigner, is able to form friendships, connections and relationship; the other only female in the novel, Fubiki is robbed of her sexuality, individuality and is exoticised. Fubiko is the ideal fantasy of a Japanese woman. As Am茅lie [or can we as readers take this to be Nothomb's voice?] describes:
'Not all Japenese women are beautiful. But when one of them sets out to be beautiful, anyone else had better stand back. All forms of beauty are poignant, Japanese beauty particularly so. That lily-white complexion, those mellow eyes, the inimitable shape of the nose...
Thus Fubiko is the very poster-girl for Orientalism, as an exotic but always dangerous figure, as someone who functions robotically in the novel. Her only hope at sexuality is either through suicide or marriage: Am茅lie's assertion that these are the only two avenues for Japanese women are nothing more than racist and belittling, and stand alongside her proclamation that she has a 'profound admiration for any Japanese woman who has not committed suicide', whilst later 'Everyone knows that Japan has the highest suicide rate of any country. What surprised me was that suicides were not more common.' This long segment where Am茅lie talks about the 'Fate of the Japanese Woman' is supposed to be a critique of the various dogmas that entrap the gender roles within Japanese society, however because the description is nothing more than an incoherent rant - written in second-person towards an imaginary audience - Nothomb dissociates away from the connection any deeper meaning and political value. Her outburst means nothing because it has nothing to do with the characters. Such an oblique mention to feminism is lazy feminism at best - and yet hypocritically, in denouncing the institution which would force Fubuki to marry, Am茅lie then mocks Fubuki's attempts at flirting. To put the icing on the cake, ironically, the only man in the novel which could save Fubuki from her drone existence is a white man (!) Such painful contradictions litter the novel, turning it into a mess of cultural clashes and caricatures; Nothomb's style though easy to read, and stylistically very new-age, is equally disorientating at points where her descriptions become random and are composed of awkward imagery and irksome stylistic phrases, such as 'mashed-potato syndrome paralyzing my hand'. However such repulsion may be the point: Nothomb wants to be shocking. And the novel is shocking, but for all the wrong reasons, and it is for all the wrong reasons that continues to keep receiving ludicrously high ratings and positive reviews.

Japan sure brings out the bonkers in everybody, doesn鈥檛 it.
(Bonkers : a demotic English term meaning crazy but with the element of horror removed and an extra squirt of I will never understand this in a million years 鈥� get me out of this room!)
I tried, you may know this already, to get on board with The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. That was a little too eyerollingly cute-weird for me. I had a go with the other Murakami guy (Ryu, not Haruki) and he was really strange.
Then there was Natsuo Kirino. The novel was called Grotesque and it really was.
And I must mention a little movie called Love Exposure by Sion Sono. Synopsis : A bizarre love triangle forms between a young Catholic upskirt photographer, a misandric girl and a manipulative cultist. Truly madly deeply bonkers鈥�.!! One of my all time favourites. You gotta see Love Exposure! But not with your parents!!
So now this tiny novel-memoir which is Japan from a Western point of view. 22 year old Belgian girl gets job with huge Tokyo corporation 鈥� and a year of humiliation begins. It鈥檚 a little hymn of hatred towards Japan and frankly borderline racist as Amelie Nothomb makes generalization upon generalization about all Japanese people and they鈥檙e all profoundly derogatory. Japanese people should sue this book right now. It鈥檚 so insulting.
Now I think Amelie is gonna say well can鈥檛 you tell I really deep down LOVE Japan and its people.
But the experience of reading this is like watching someone wrestling rather too strenuously with their pet dog 鈥� who鈥檚 a naughty ittle doggy then? Are You a naughty ittle doggy? Are YOU the NAUGHTIEST NASTIEST MOST ANNOYING ITTLE DOGGY? Yes, you are!! YES YOU ARE. You get the strong impression there鈥檚 some genuine aggression in there.
I鈥檒l just dish up a quote for you, in case you may think I may be misrepresenting Amelie. Here she is contemplating Japanese company men :

What awaited these poor number-crunchers outside The Company? The obligatory beer with colleagues undergoing the same kind of gradual lobotomy, hours spent stuffed into an overcrowded subway, a dozing wife, exhausted children, sleep that sucked them down into it like the vortex of a flushing toilet, the occasional day off they never took full advantage of. Nothing that deserved to be called a life.
Oh and howsabout this:
A Japanese person genuinely apologizing happens about once every century.
Ouch!
So anyway, it鈥檚 a bitter, too-near-the-knuckle-to-be-really-funny memoir (why do they bother to call these things novels?) and I鈥檓 most curious to find out What Amelie Did Next.

Quiz谩s es cierto que Am茅lie Nothomb no es una autora para todo los p煤blicos, pero que tiene ese algo particular y especial nadie puede negarlo. 隆Y c贸mo me alegra ser de esas personas que disfruta tanto de lo estramb贸tica que es! Octava novela que leo de ella y s茅ptima que no me deja indiferente.
En este caso nos encontramos con la Am茅lie de veintitantos a帽os. Desde que era una ni帽a, no hab铆a vuelto al que consideraba su hogar, Jap贸n. Ahora, ya una mujer, y con toda la resaca que le provocaban sus a帽os de infancia, consigue encontrar un empleo en una de las grandes empresas niponas. Pronto descubrir谩 que no todo era tan bonito como recordaba y que adem谩s de muchas cosas buenas, la cultura japonesa, tambi茅n tiene muchos incovenientes para los occidentales.
A trav茅s del a帽o que pas贸 trabajando en esta empresa, Am茅lie nos hace un r谩pido paso por la dura y jerarquizada estructura empresarial en Jap贸n. El empleado es pr谩ctimente un siervo del superior, no tiene derecho a queja, ni siquiera a defenderse ante una injusticia. Cualquier queja es considerada de mala educaci贸n y una perdida inmediata del honor.
Si para colmo eres mujer, tus posibilidades de ascender o de tener un buen puesto, son pr谩cticamente nulas. Y si eres una de esas pocas mujeres que lo ha conseguido, la lucha por mantener el puesto hace incluso m谩s dura la situaci贸n. Adem谩s, todas estas mujeres que consiguen ascender, deben renunciar a la vida familiar, consiguiendo ser tambi茅n juzgadas por no tener una familia a煤n, siendo ya "mayores" para ello. La mujer sigue siendo reducida a un marido y unos hijos. Disfruto mucho tambi茅n de esas relaciones amorosas y t贸xicas, que la autora suele mostrar entre mujeres, normalmente ella misma y alguna otra de la que se enamor贸.
Muy interesante el retrato que hace Am茅lie del papel de la mujer en Jap贸n y como luchan contrar esa constante idea de "no perder el honor". En la literatura asi谩tica actual tenemos varios ejemplos de autoras que hablan del mismo tema: Sayaka Murata, Cho Nam-Joo o Mitsuyo kakuta. Am茅lie ya lo estaba mostrando a finales de los noventa. Esta se帽ora tiene mi cari帽o para siempre.

Inicio el a帽o con una escritora nueva para m铆, Am茅lie Nothomb.
Peque帽a novela autobiogr谩fica en la que nos cuenta el funcionamiento de una empresa japonesa desde el punto de vista de una persona occidental.
La diferencia cultural entre oriente y occidente es de sobra conocida, pero dentro de la empresa, en el mundo laboral no tanto, y esta peque帽a novela es una buena forma de acercarnos a este abismo que nos separa.
Es cierto que esta ambientada en los a帽os 90 y puede que ahora haya cambiado, pero no hace tantos a帽os el ambiente laboral japon茅s era, encorsetado, cerrado, normatizado, jerarquizado y muy muy machista.
Los usos y costumbres a los que estuvo sometido la escritora horrorizan, especialmente en el 煤ltimo destino que tuvo dentro de la empresa, pero lo cuenta de una manera tan sencilla, divertida e ir贸nica que hasta la peor de las humillaciones te resulta graciosa.
Me hubiera gustado que la novela hubiera sido m谩s larga, que se adentrara m谩s en los entresijos de la empresa, en su d铆a a d铆a con m谩s detalle, pero el contrato se le acab贸 y el final de sus d铆as en la empresa japonesa es de traca.
Muy recomendable.

"Fear and Trembling" embraces the strange with one wicked arsenal of irrational (but noble) thoughts & actions by the superb heroine. Her authentic recklessness captivates, no enamours, the reader. I had very strong feelings for this incredible novel because I lived EXACTLY the type of professional downward spiral that all but defeats you. Like a posher (!?!?) precursor to "The Devil Wears Prada," the entire plot unravels within the confines of the claustrophobic and limiting Workplace. This is an ugly child that you want to keep with you forever: it's really THAT wonderful.

Japanischer Stromberg packt das Samuraischwert aus - oder How not to run human ressource management for Dummies
Diese kleine Geschichte hinter den Kulissen des B眉roalltags der japanischen Firma Yuminoto von Am茅lie Notohomb ist gar k枚stlich, wenn sie nicht so menschenverachtend grausam w盲re. Also wie in der Einleitung knackig geschildert: Man nehme die B眉rosatire Stromberg, verdopple, beziehungsweise verdreifache die Grausamkeiten und menschlichen Abgr眉nde - respektive was man den lieben Kollegen, speziell hierarchisch Untergebenen antun kann - f眉ge noch die japanische Demut von Mitarbeitern, die Angst vor dem Gesichtsverlust und patriachalische gesellschaftliche Verhaltenskodizies, speziell f眉r Frauen hinzu und fertig ist diese Groteske, bei der mir oft das Lachen und Schmunzeln im Halse steckengeblieben ist.
Die Abl盲ufe und Bestrafungssysteme f眉r nicht konformes Verhalten und unerw眉nschte Mitarbeiter-Eigeninitiative sind sehr kafkaesk in diesem hierarchischen, b眉rokratischen Unternehmen mit menschenverachtenden, oft komplett sinnentleerten Managementmethoden. Aus betriebswirtschaftlicher Sicht ist diese Unternehmenskultur sogar so unbetriebswirtschaftlich und leistungsfeindlich, dass man sich wundert, wie in so einem Umfeld irgendwann 眉berhaupt Innovation (sei es auch nur eine Prozessinnovation oder Marketingidee) stattfinden kann.
Insofern witzig ist das ganze auch auf jeden Fall, da die belgische Protagonistin als ausl盲ndische Mitarbeiterin erstens diese Dem眉tigungen nur ein Jahr bis zum Arbeitsvertragsablauf erdulden muss und sie zweitens die ganze Sache insofern sportlich und mit Humor nimmt, dass sie das ganze als 脺bung zur Assimilation in die japanische Kultur sieht. Man stelle sich vor, als japanische Frau aber auch als Mann kann man diesem System ein Leben lang nicht entkommen, da erkl盲ren sich die vielen Selbstmorde wie von selbst, was in dieser Geschichte auch thematisiert wird. So kommt zu dieser Story, die sehr starke autobiografische Z眉ge tr盲gt, eine geh枚rige Portion japanische Gesellschaftskritik hinzu.
Also, weil es die selbstverst盲ndlichste Sache von der Welt war, den Infinitiv eines Verbs als Vornamen zu w盲hlen, hatte Herr Saito seinen Sohn Tsutomeru, "arbeiten" genannt. Den Gedanken, dass man die Identit盲t des Kn盲bleins mit solch einem Programm ausstaffiert hatte, fand ich erheiternd. Ich stelle mir vor, wie die Mutter in wenigen Jahren den Jungen ermahnen w眉rde, "Arbeiten, geh arbeiten!" Und wenn er nun arbeitslos werden w眉rde?
Z枚gere daher nicht zwischen Selbstt枚tung und Schwitzen! Das eigene Blut zu vergie脽en, verdient Bewunderung, Schwei脽 zu vergie脽en Verachtung. Wenn Du Dir den Tod gibst, schwitzt Du nie wieder und deine Beklemmung hat f眉r alle Ewigkeiten ein Ende
Fazit: Sehr b枚se, insofern sehr witzig und sehr klug gemacht, wenn man ein bisschen die Unternehmenskultur in multinationalen japanischen Konzernen kennt oder kennenlernen will. Ach ja einen halben Punkt Abzug gibt es eigentlich nur f眉r die K眉rze dieses Romans. Ich wollte auf jeden Fall mehr.
Diese kleine Geschichte hinter den Kulissen des B眉roalltags der japanischen Firma Yuminoto von Am茅lie Notohomb ist gar k枚stlich, wenn sie nicht so menschenverachtend grausam w盲re. Also wie in der Einleitung knackig geschildert: Man nehme die B眉rosatire Stromberg, verdopple, beziehungsweise verdreifache die Grausamkeiten und menschlichen Abgr眉nde - respektive was man den lieben Kollegen, speziell hierarchisch Untergebenen antun kann - f眉ge noch die japanische Demut von Mitarbeitern, die Angst vor dem Gesichtsverlust und patriachalische gesellschaftliche Verhaltenskodizies, speziell f眉r Frauen hinzu und fertig ist diese Groteske, bei der mir oft das Lachen und Schmunzeln im Halse steckengeblieben ist.
Die Abl盲ufe und Bestrafungssysteme f眉r nicht konformes Verhalten und unerw眉nschte Mitarbeiter-Eigeninitiative sind sehr kafkaesk in diesem hierarchischen, b眉rokratischen Unternehmen mit menschenverachtenden, oft komplett sinnentleerten Managementmethoden. Aus betriebswirtschaftlicher Sicht ist diese Unternehmenskultur sogar so unbetriebswirtschaftlich und leistungsfeindlich, dass man sich wundert, wie in so einem Umfeld irgendwann 眉berhaupt Innovation (sei es auch nur eine Prozessinnovation oder Marketingidee) stattfinden kann.
Insofern witzig ist das ganze auch auf jeden Fall, da die belgische Protagonistin als ausl盲ndische Mitarbeiterin erstens diese Dem眉tigungen nur ein Jahr bis zum Arbeitsvertragsablauf erdulden muss und sie zweitens die ganze Sache insofern sportlich und mit Humor nimmt, dass sie das ganze als 脺bung zur Assimilation in die japanische Kultur sieht. Man stelle sich vor, als japanische Frau aber auch als Mann kann man diesem System ein Leben lang nicht entkommen, da erkl盲ren sich die vielen Selbstmorde wie von selbst, was in dieser Geschichte auch thematisiert wird. So kommt zu dieser Story, die sehr starke autobiografische Z眉ge tr盲gt, eine geh枚rige Portion japanische Gesellschaftskritik hinzu.
Also, weil es die selbstverst盲ndlichste Sache von der Welt war, den Infinitiv eines Verbs als Vornamen zu w盲hlen, hatte Herr Saito seinen Sohn Tsutomeru, "arbeiten" genannt. Den Gedanken, dass man die Identit盲t des Kn盲bleins mit solch einem Programm ausstaffiert hatte, fand ich erheiternd. Ich stelle mir vor, wie die Mutter in wenigen Jahren den Jungen ermahnen w眉rde, "Arbeiten, geh arbeiten!" Und wenn er nun arbeitslos werden w眉rde?
Z枚gere daher nicht zwischen Selbstt枚tung und Schwitzen! Das eigene Blut zu vergie脽en, verdient Bewunderung, Schwei脽 zu vergie脽en Verachtung. Wenn Du Dir den Tod gibst, schwitzt Du nie wieder und deine Beklemmung hat f眉r alle Ewigkeiten ein Ende
Fazit: Sehr b枚se, insofern sehr witzig und sehr klug gemacht, wenn man ein bisschen die Unternehmenskultur in multinationalen japanischen Konzernen kennt oder kennenlernen will. Ach ja einen halben Punkt Abzug gibt es eigentlich nur f眉r die K眉rze dieses Romans. Ich wollte auf jeden Fall mehr.

My Japanese friend, 30-ish, former competitive cross-country skier*, now a sushi-man working in Poland, moved all the way from the other side of the world to Warsaw, just to make sushi for local yuppies. Can you imagine? In order to escape Tokio's corporate nightmare, he swapped continents, traded cultures, left his family behind and moved to this obscure little country called Poland. I mean I like it here, but it's not the most foreigner friendly place. Especially not if you are a slender Japanese dude with long silky hair and a cute pudgely face.
Just to give you an example, this friend of mine gets giggled at by teenage girls just because of his androgynous fashion choices and petite builds, I'm guessing he confuses the shit out of them, but come on, grow the hell up girls. Then he gets mean stares from clerks because his Polish doesn't live up to their snooty standards. Oh and he gets hit on while in clubs by hoards of horny women who want to satisfy the itch for something exotic. Just to be even, he gets hit on in clubs by horny men too**, again I think it's all about the curiosity and the exotics. All that is minor annoyances, the most worrisome is that my friend gets looked down by his coworkers. Even though he's the most involved of all the business partners, had invested the most $$ and is the only one among the bunch with the intricate knowledge of sushi making, he is treated as someone less worthy. Nothing better than racist colleagues, is there? People sometimes suck.
And if you put all that crap he's dealing with on top of the regular ex-pat maladies (homesickness, scarcity of home food, cultural misunderstandings, etc), it can really get nasty. So it made me wonder***, for him to put up with this crap every single day, how bad the typical Japanese workplace can be? How awful Tokyo's corporate overlords? To my understanding my friend was just a regular guy, living normal life - no Yakuza, no kink.
Am茅lie Nothomb gives some answers to that, she did the opposite of my Japanese friend has done. She left her native Belgium to live and work in one of Tokyo's major corporations. From her book you get a taste of what work in such an environment is like, what's expected from a newbie and why some might find daunting. The book's funny (I got quite a few laughs), lyrical at times (much appreciated melancholic descriptions from time to time, and well crafted description at that) and a little... fake.
Nothomb lies her ass of. That's her writing style. Most of it is exaggeration and fact twisting, I'm sure it's done for comical relief and to prove a point, but still, to me that to a degree undermines the credibility of her story. In short, if you can live with shameless exaggeration, you'll enjoy the book. Otherwise - prepare yourself for a whole lot of teeth grinding.

A slap in the face to the rigidity of the Japanese workplace environment, this novel adopts a similar attitude to Convenience Store Woman, making us laugh at something so horrendous. I'm not sure how much has changed about Japan's overworked and highly hierarchical work culture, but at least no one pretends anymore that it is a good example.
