I enjoyed it, because I enjoy lesbian mysteries and because it was set in Sydney (I read it on the way and while in Sydney) but I won't delude myself it was well written.

The writing was fairly clunky and the characters were two dimensional and became predictable fairly quickly (it was still better than a lot of stuff that is out there). The romance (or maybe I should say attraction) with lots of different women to some degree was supposed to complexify Carol I suppose but I don't like a heroine who everyone wants to bed. She's tough and intelligent though, that is a good thing...and the book is full of intelligent and confident female characters.

I liked that even though Marla was portrayed as an over-the-top going too far feminist, this view of her softened to some degree throughout the course of the book (in marked contrast to something else I am reading at the moment). Most relationships in the book were somewhat dysfunctional but there was a heavy dose of hope in there...I will keep reading these whenever I find one.

#6 in the Detective Inspector Carol Ashton mystery series finds Carol recovering from a gunshot wound received in the line of duty underestimating one of Mark Bourke's suspected murderers. So soon back to work Carol finds herself with the unenviable duty to play bodyguard (or babysitter as Carol sees it) to one Marla Strickland. Marla is a very outspoken American feminist with as many haters as she does supporters. Not wanting the job and the Marla not wanting her, Carol begrudgingly takes the position (what choice does she really have) and is off on a tour of Australia trying to keep Marla safe. Reeling from Sybil's departure to England for a year long women focused course, Carol finds her emotions in a whirlwind between Sybil, Marla, Denise, Anne and the ever seductive and tempting Madeleine Shipley. First there were the threats, then the bomb, then the sniper, now with the last appearance being a debate against one of the top god fearing woman hating "preachers" Carol has taken it upon herself to insure the safety of everyone involved. The main problem may be that Carol doesn't want to put her life on the line again for the job but she cares too much about her job let alone the women involved to stop now. With all the plausible threats out of the television studio most people are relaxing but not Carol, she realizes the previous attempts were leading up to this moment, the very publicized tv moment, but who could be at the root of it all? It couldn't be the famed woman hater as he would never dirty his hands with such a task and everyone else has been checked for weapons, well except for one person...

Sixth in the Carol Ashton series. Ashton is a lesbian detective in Australia who was outed in the fifth book in the series and now is dealing with the public and her co-workers being aware of her sexuality. She is assigned to be a body guard for a visiting feminist who is in Australia to give speeches and make appearances. First a car bomb occurs, killing one person but exploding before the feminist is able to get to the car. Further attempts occur and Ashton must determine who is planning and orchestrating the attacks before her assignment is killed. Very readable story.

Good book, but if McNab wants to accurately portray her American characters in a remotely convincing way, she needs to quit having them use Aussie expressions like "he's off his head" which apparently means he's crazy or he's out of his mind.
