Science writer Bob Friedhoffer reveals the scientific principles behind everyday tools and gadgets that you can find in a hardware store-sandpaper and screws, wheelbarrows and wrenches, hatchets and hammers, and much more. This book is full of fun experiments and activities that will show you why scissors cut, how to fix a creaking door, and what a ladder and an axe have in common.
Somehow, GR merged my comments on two different books.
Hardware Store:
Organized by various physics principles, mostly simple machines. Each section describes a the ways that the principle can be found in a hardware store, with a few simple activities.
Housewares Store:
Mostly describes phyics in everyday appliances, with an emphasis on simple machines and heat.
What a great book that my middle schoolers will love.....all the things that they can find the garage. How the science applies to the function of the tool!!!
I love this book and plan on using it when I teach my Force & Motion unit next year.
