This was such an interesting character study. It¡¯s captures so many truths that exist outside this fantasy world. Violence begets violence. It¡¯s fascinating to see how much Loki, Caesar, and Nakaba will work together to save the Ajin from the horrible decisions of the king. I was so surprised to see Cain enter the picture in the way that he did and I loved that Toma gave him the name Cain because he lives up to it in every way. This one ends on some what of a cliff hanger which makes me so very scared for Lemiria. I hope nothing goes wrong. I¡¯m also interested in seeing what other Arcana powers exist since we learn about some interesting ones in this volume. Such a great and gut wrenching installment to the series.

review for complete series, v1-13

This is the type of shoujo manga that makes me like the genre. The heroine, Nakaba, has been discriminated against just because of her hair color (hair color is given the same negative tones and descrimination as skin color is given in the real world which does a good job of bringing to light how silly it is to treat someone differently based on something they're born with and can't control). Her mother, a princess of Senan, ran away to be with the man she loved (why she had to run away to be with him is explained throughout the story) and after her death, Nakaba is brought back to her grandfather, the king. He stows her away in a tower of the castle and that's where she grows up.

In another kingdom, Ceasar is born as the second son to the king of Dequat but because of his black hair and the fact that the eldest son, Cain, is blond, there's hidden deceptions and factions working to make Ceasar the next king. All Ceasar has wanted is the love of his family though and because of the choices made by the adults in his life, he grows into a young man who has a negative outlook and distrust of people.

To try and prevent war, the kings decide to make a treaty and Nakaba is sent to "seal the deal" to be Ceasar's wife. At this point, two kingdoms who care little of these two as people but only see them as pawns, put them together and - to everyone's surprise and disgust - they start to not only get along but fall in love.

Not only do these two have to deal with the machinations of their kingdoms and the individual discriminations against them but there's also the racism against a separate group of people called Aijin who share traits with various animals and there's also the mysterious powers known as the Arcana that gift their bearers with anything from control of an element to the ability to see the future. (Nakaba has been gifted with the Arcana to see the past and future.)

This series brings together all the good points of a love story with the fantasy saga of two kingdoms who are at war. The heroine has to overcome the discrimination against her, the power she's been given that can be terrible, her growing love for a man she should hate, and fighting for the Aijin. The hero of this tale has to decide to set aside his uncaring attitude and decide what he wants to fight for while he learns what lengths he'll go to and what strength he has for a woman he loves.

This series made me fall in love with the characters, root for their fights and cry for their losses. It has surprises throughout and keeps you just enough off balance that you aren't sure what will happen next. I highly recommend this title to anyone who enjoys fantasy, a relationship between two people who don't immediately care about each other, a strong heroine, or people with animal traits (for lack of a better term, furries).

Conflict is inevitable as Caesar, Nakaba, Lemiria, and Bellinus try to warn the residents of an Ajin village that a force is coming with new weapons capable of harming their kind but their words only carry so much weight as prides flare and time grows ever shorter. Leading the imperial forces the fair haired brother of Caesar, Cain (I really appreciate the character charts at the beginning of the book to keep everyone straight) has honeyed words but a deep hatred for his brother Caesar who became the heir apparent when secret meetings changed the history of the boys making Cain's mother a concubine after she died.

A good mix of love and action this series keeps me cheering on Nakaba and Caesar as they fight against prejudices that grip the world in a violet grip while continuing to show us motivations and character backgrounds well through the Arcana of Time. By the way there are other Arcana users as well with one being very close as well as several in the village so I look forward to see what magical tricks pops up next as much as I look forward to seeing Caesar and Nakaba battle injustice and fall for each other a little more each volume.

There is also a bonus comic at the end of the volume setting the characters in a High school scenario through dream sequences from the characters so if you like parody like I do I hope you enjoy these few chapters. :)

Fave moment would have to be Bellinus's plan to sneak in the Ajin village with fake animal ears and tails to make them look like Ajin and Caesars blatant rejection of the idea (Nakaba looked super cute as a cat girl though.) :)

3.75? I don't like Lamiria's character that much. I find more energetic characters like that irritating. The Ajin village is very interesting and the wide variety in Ajin is a definite change over what has been shown so far as well as in The King's Beast.

A village of Arcana?

This prince, Cain, is a real piece of work! How dare he! How dare he slay innocent Ajin!

He hates his brother, but its not his brothers fault! Cain's mother

I am kicking myself so hard right now! I got these from the library, I own the first one, I borrowed 2-5 and I am kicking myself that I didn't get the entire series!

I am rushing to the library before work tomorrow to pick them up!

The ending! I just cannot see lemiria be hurt!! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!

Again, I loved this. I really wanted to like Prince Cain. I still kinda do even though he's a chump. Maybe he'll change his evil ways? Probably not but Nakaba has a way with people so we'll see.

It's been a hot minute since I last picked up a volume of this series, I made a promise to myself that in 2024 I'd do better with figuring out if I want to continue or drop series I've read from before, rather than leaving them in this in between space. It made sense to choose this one first, because I've been in the mood lately for more fantasy and stories about royals.

This volume ended up being just okay. I managed to catch up to what was happening pretty quickly, so it's not due to any confusion on my end, I just am not super sucked in to the characters or the conflicts.

I like the art quite a bit though, I forgot how clean and satisfying newer digital art can be haha. The outfits are pretty fun to look at, and they really distinguish the difference in everyone's personalities, which is an important thing that sadly a lot writers (even screenwriters for movies and such) really overlook.

Nakaba is a pretty nice protagonist though, and it's mostly due to her (and her arcana) that I'm intrigued enough to continue. Though I do hope I can feel more of a connection as the story progresses.

It's crazy that both Nakaba and Cain were discriminated against simply for the color of their hair. But living in the world we do, it's not that hard to imagine.

Nakaba and the others are trying to warn the Ajin village of the impending attack. And Nakaba learns that she has a lot more in common with Prince Cain than she thought.

I would give this volume 4 and a half stars. Really good, added more depth to the characters. Gives you an understanding of why Cain is the way he is. Nakaba and Caesar grow even closer. And what was revealed about Lemiria is quite interesting. Hoping that is explored and more about her is revealed in coming volumes.

The gang makes it to the Ajin Village in hopes of rescuing them from the oncoming slaughter. They devise a plan to use themselves as hostages to bait Prince Cain from ceasing the attack. But it's no use as Nakaba uses her Arcane to see the sad past of Cain and his resentment for his brother. Lemira also reveals her special Arcane and Nakaba realizes she'll be harder to protect because she just won't listen. Not too much happened other than character work and explanation of the different Arcane abilities, but I still am enjoying the story. I didn't want to have feels for Cain and yet, here we are. Nakaba is really growing into a well developed character though!

Reader's Notes:
- this is part of a series and should be read in order
-there is some fantasy violence/death/killing & discrimination/prejudice against specific peoples (the ajin - people with some animal features and strengthened senses)

Review:
It's been a few months since I read Vol. 4 so I'm not 100% sure I knew about Caesar's brother or not, but he definitely made some of the events in this installment more interesting! I'm curious as to why his brother's life was changed in the way it was and what Caesar was thinking in the moment(s) Nakaba flashed back to. I'm wondering if everything was actually ow it looked or if Caesar had different intentions.

The pace of the story is picking up, and sweeping Nakaba right along with it.

Story: ¡ï¡ï¡ï¡ï¡î
Art: ¡ï¡ï¡ï¡î¡î

The impact of racism is strong in this volume. The Ajin in the mountains are feared for their strength and arcana power as much as their animal qualities. Nakaba is set on saving the villagers and Lemiria from the King¡¯s attack, but encountering Cain complicates matters. It doesn¡¯t help that Cain is as messed up as his biblical namesake. Expect surprise, intrigue, tragic backstories, and betrayal.

An extra star given for the high school satire at the end of the volume.

This series is definitely getting better as I read more of it. I honestly wasn't sure I would enjoy this series after finishing the first couple of volumes. But they have really started to get more complex and more and more information is thrown at you.

This volume turns us on our heads. Just when you think you know what's going on, Rei Toma throws a wrench in that and everything changes. The political intrigue is still very present and there is so much going on with all the characters. The volumes are definitely getting more complex and both plot and character development is present.

I find that there is a really great balance between the romance aspect of this series and the action. More of the magic aspect of this series is also coming into play. The author is definitely giving us bits of information regarding the magic and it makes it mysterious.

This volume introduces more themes of disclination, verbal and emotional abuse, neglect, etc. It really does make for an intense and interesting series with very vibrant backgrounds.

I can feel bad for Cain regarding his background, but he's still g a r b o (mostly). He's relatable, but plenty of people go through terrible things and don't blame the innocents around them. Mixed feelings about the guy, but that makes for good bad guys.

Love seeing more Ajin in this volume, and seeing the plot flesh itself out a bit after the first few volumes were super rushed.

The Arcana High shorts at the end were cute.

Well... this went in a slightly different direction than I had planned or expected from prior installments. BUT with that, it might be a good time to take a little hiatus and pause from the series and see if I can recoup some steam. I want to spend my time reading some seasonal things right now and not continue a series I am not fully enjoying. I think this twist that we just got PLUS a little break will be just what I need to get back into this series.

I loved this book so much especially the art (like i said in previous comments) however i especially loved the little Arcana High in the back, i found that so cute and honestly i hope i get the sixth book with the little Arcana High special again. I wish there were more mangas similar to this, i wish Arcana High was a full story, that would be amazing and rather funny in my opinion.

This one is one of my favorites. The political tension is so good, and the sacrificial love that Nakaba has is so refreshing.

I especially love all the little plot twists about the arcana?

Content warnings: Blood, death, death of a parent, genocide, injury/injury detail, murder, racism, violence, and war.

We finally get to learn about the other prince and it turns out he's a horrible person because society slighted him for his lesser birth. We also learn that there are other arcana and that Nakaba is only one of many who possess them.

This was cute, the series continues to be quite strong and well paced. I like the characters and how they are developing as more is revealed about various characters. I also like the graphics.
The bonus 3 chapters in this volume were also cute.
