After watching some booktube videos (at this time of a year, booktube is full of horror and spooky books recommendations and TBRs), I was in a mood for some horror and spooky read. Since horror novels are something I read so rarely that I don't even know which books are good and which ones are new, I decided I would just reread a book that made me shit my pants when I was 15. It is also one of my all-time favorite books for the same reason - that book woke up emotions I wasn't even awared I had in me.
Good thing is I didn't shit my pants this time. As a matter of fact, I wasn't even scared, but I appreciated parts that used to scare me when I was young(er).
Peter, Peter, Peter!!
Not so good thing is that now when I reread it with more experienced mind of a reader, I saw some flaws I was blind to before (like how some scenes were illogical and some proofs couldn't be proven ( )
So yeah, my flawless book wasn't perfect after all. But, because it is still one of my all time favorite books and I still love it to bits, I am not changing my rating! 5 stars it is!!!
Don't Forget Me, by R.L Stine. I've been wanting to read more R.L Stine for a while, just to see how well it holds up for me now as an adult. I actually never read this publication! But I'm glad I am now. The goosebumps books were the more popular serial, but some of them scared me enough to keep me from reading them too often, 鈥榳elcome to the dead house鈥 was probably the creepiest one for me as a kid.
This story actually has a similar theme to the Dead House book. A girl named Danielle Warner and her little brother Peter move into an old house in their town, called the 鈥榝orget me house鈥. Danielle grew up hating her brother (or at least, she thought she did). Until one day, Danielle and her friend Addie decide to do hypnotism as their performance in the talent show. Peter is your typical annoying younger sibling, and insists that they hypnotise him. They do, and shortly after, Peter starts losing his memory. He can't remember how to play his favorite game, & he can't remember who Danielle is. Teachers & parents forget who he is, and Danielle has a man dressed in all black following her when she leaves the house, and watching her when she is in the house. & If that wasn't stressful enough, ghosts covered in ectoplasm are calling Peter's name in the basement! & Danielle is next.
It's not as creepy as it was as a kid, but it's understandable. Our fears change as we age, though that fear is a pretty real one regardless.
I never knew of the Nightmare Room books, and this was my first. Not bad! Had all the classic Goosebump feels I remember from ages ago :) Kinda disappointed no one made a "forget-me-snot" joke.....
When I read this book I was 12 and I remember I was really impressed by the book, because It was not just a fiction or a thriller story , alongside it's nice thriller story (which I still remember my heart beat from back then) it had it's nice emotional feelings between characters that makes you really care about the events. One of few stories I won't forget as the name of the book suggests itself.
When Danielle and her family move into their new house, she doesn't know that her annoying younger brother Peter hears voices calling in the basement. And she thinks his acting like he has trouble remembering simple things while their parents are away is just a joke after she tries "hypnotizing" him to turn him nicer. But when he continues to do it, and she starts forgetting things too, she wonders if something else is going on. All she knows is, when she finds everyone denying they know about him and he appears from the cracks in the basement floor covered in slime with a bunch of other kids, that they may both be in danger.
Thank you, Stine for writing these incredible books You truly made my childhood special. I enjoyed every moment spent reading your stories, and I made friends by sharing your books and discussing them together. rereading this one, it took me back to those times I'm filled with nostalgia.
I'm trying to remember at what age I used to read R.L. Stine's older books. 10? 12? I read his books religiously when I was a preteen. But I don't remember them being so poorly written.
This book is classified as Young Adult, but I don't know any YA fans who would think this was any good: characters are undeveloped; the story goes way too quickly; the plot is constructed in such an amateur fashion that I'm not sure how this was approved to publish; etc. etc. and so forth.
Give this book to third graders: they would probably enjoy it.
Don鈥檛 Forget Me Danielle is showing her friend Addie around her new house when she hears footsteps in the basement. Only it鈥檚 not her brother Peter, her mother, or her father. As she gets closer to the basement she hears a THUNK. Then she hears whispers. Danielle hears someone whisper her brother's name, but when she calls out there鈥檚 only silence. So, sje troes tp go check it out but the door is stuck.
Danielle shows Addie her room. It should be mentioned that Addie thinks everything Peter does is adorable, but Danielle just thinks he鈥檚 annoying. At the beginning of the book she tells him (teasingly she says) she wishes he was never born. While she鈥檚 showing her the room, Addie says it would be great for seances. We see Addie鈥檚 into that kind of thing. Two boys they have a crush on Mojo and Zack show up with housewarming gifts. Only they ate the two Snickers they were going to give as gifts. Danielle now notices the basement door is open and asks Peter how he got it open. But he says he didn鈥檛 do it. Addie starts to ask the guys if they鈥檙e going to a game and suggests they all hang out, but Peter distracts them by talking about the new video games he got and they all take off.
Mom and Dad go away for a couple of days and Danielle is left in charge of watching Peter. Addie comes by and as she鈥檚 telling Danielle about her idea for then doing a 鈥渇ake鈥 hypnotism for the talent show she sees a man in the shadoes off a tree outside. He鈥檚 wearing a black rain coat and just staring up at the house. When Danielle goes outside to confront the man he鈥檚 vanished. They go back inside. Danielle wants to go to the park, but Addie convinces her to work on their act. Danielle agrees as long as she can be the hyptnotise. So they start practicing. Peter sees them and then demands to know what they鈥檙e doing. Addie brags that Danielle can hypnotize anyone. Peter convinces Danielle to hypnotize him. She says she will as long as after she does he鈥檒l leave them alone. Danielle is thinking he鈥檒l say he doesn鈥檛 feel anything and she鈥檒l tell him it didn鈥檛 work because he was in so deep a trance. When Danielle tries to bring him out of the trance, he doesn鈥檛 move. They even try tickling him. That doesn鈥檛 work either and they start to panic.
His eyes open momentarily and he groans. He stares at them blankly. Then he asks where is he. Addie thinks he鈥檚 just playing a joke. Danielle thinks she鈥檚 ruinted his memory. He seems to not remember Addie or Danielle. Danielle goes to call the doctor, but he says he鈥檚 fine. To prove it he jumps up on the couch and does a wild tap dance. He says he did feel weird for a minute.. dizzy. Then despite his pleas to stay they send him on his way. Addie then leaves. Danielle says she never wants to hypnotize anyone again. Addie says it鈥檚 just pretend. Then she leaves. Danielle stands there trembling freaked out by the whole thing. It鈥檚 too quiet so Danielle looks in on Peter. Even though he says he鈥檚 fine he asks her how to play Tomb Raider 9his favorite game).
He asks how to start the game, and Danielle sets it to beginner. But then he remembers he鈥檚 beat the game three times. Danielle decides to call the doctor but it鈥檚 Sunday. Zack calls and asks Danielle out to Burger Palace and tells her to bring Peter. Everything is going fine until she notices Peter is eating with the wrong hand. Their mom calls, and Danielle wants to tell her but doesn鈥檛. She tells herself Peter will be back to normal by the time they get home. She can try going up to him and snapping her fingers or try hypnotizing him again. Then she hears the sighs, moans, and whispers. Danielle wonders if they鈥檙e goming from down the hall and wonders if they have burglars. She checks but no one there. She hears the whispers calling her brother's name. She follows them into the living room. The whispers tell Peter they鈥檙e waiting. She goes to call the police but then notices the basement door is open. Even tho she remembers shutting it before. In the basement Danielle finds four, strange, kids covered in a white, gel-like slime. Danielle runs up the stairs to her room. She convinces herself it was a drea,. But just to assure herself she checks Peter鈥檚 room. The bed is empty.
He's in the window seat. He surprises Danielle by grabbing her arm and asking her not to forget him. Addie stops by and Danielle accuses her of it being her fault that Peter is hypnotized. Addie says that she鈥檒l just have to use the book to redo it. They call out for Peter and find he鈥檚 halfway down the steps of the basement. They try it again. It doesn鈥檛 work. So, they just decide to go to school. Before they leave Danielle notices the basement is open. Outside, Danielle sees the man in the shadows. He starts to come after Danielle but she starts to run. He chases after her. Addie and Peter are ahead of her. The strap of Danielle鈥檚 backpack (slips? Breaks?) Before she knows it the man is behind her.
Luckily a car cuts him off and it gives Danielle enough time to catch up with Addie and Peter. Danielle is spacey all day in school and Zack notices and asks if she wants him to tutour her with her chem homework, but she says she has to watch Peter. Maybe someo other time. She convinces herself that when she picks him up from school, he鈥檒l be back to normal. After school, she waits and waits for him to come out, but he doesn鈥檛. When she goes to his class, his teacher (Mrs. Anderson) says there鈥檚 no one in the class by that name. Danielle goes home and hears moans. Peter is pacing back and forth in his room with his eyes half shut. When he does speak he asks in a horse growl who is she and what is she doing in his house.
He tells her to get out of his house. She tells him to just stay in his room and runs to call Dr. Ross. But he鈥檚 away at a conference. So, she calls her aunt Kate. No one answers. There鈥檚 a knock on the door and Danielle thinks it鈥檚 Addie, but it鈥檚 the man in the black coat. He says 鈥淕otcha鈥.The man says he鈥檚 a reporter from Star magazine and he鈥檚 trying to do a report on the house. He says he found some articles and they called the house 鈥淔orget Me House鈥. He says one by one the people who live there start to forget and then they鈥檙e forgotten too. He asks if anyone in the family is doing anything strange. Danielle tells him no and he has to leave. He apologizes for upsetting her and says he鈥檒l come back when her parents are there. When Peter sees Danielle he again tells her to get out and then starts to chock her.
Danielle is about to get free of him and runs out the door. She finds herself at Addie鈥檚 house. She tells her she thinks it something more than what they did. Then she knows who the slime kids were (the forgotten ones). Then she runs back home. Before she gets there she hears a growl. Then their neighboors (German Shepard) starts to run after her. It wants to play thankfully but Danielle can鈥檛 remember its name. By the time Danielle gets to the house she realizes the dog won鈥檛 come near the house. It鈥檚 terrified of it. The door is still open. The basement door is also open. She hears the chants but this time it鈥檚 Danielle鈥檚 name they鈥檙e chanting. Danielle decides she鈥檚 going to go into the basement to rescue Peter and grabs a flashlight (as a weapon). She sees the words in red DON鈥橳 FORGET ME. Then she sees Peter bathed in a silver light standing still. Peter is leaning over a trap door and takes a step. Danielle yells for him. He freezes and then takes a step back. Then another. When he turns around he鈥檚 covered in gelatin. He tells Danielle goodbye. He lowers himself into the trap door and then it shuts.
Frantically Danielle looks for the trap door. It鈥檚 not there. Danielle decides to call the police and the fire department, but before she can her parents pull into the driveway. Danielle tries to rush them into the basement, but they look at her blanjkly and tell her she doesn鈥檛 have a brother named Peter. Danielle tries to tell her mom about the house and the man. Dad has to pull her off when Danielle tries to make her believe her. Danielle realizes it鈥檚 a lost cause. They think she鈥檚 crazy. She decides to wait until they鈥檙e calmer to try again. They all agree to talk about it in the morning. When Danielle waks up from a deep sleep she can鈥檛 remember what she was upset about the day before.
Then she remembers (Peter), But the next morning, her parents are gone. The school day goes by in a blur. Addie is shaking Danielle and she tells her she passed out. She forgot her lunch. Addie also tells her when her teacher asked her to pass out the papers she acted like she didn鈥檛 understand English. Danielle tries to tell Addie what happened the previous day but Addie doesn鈥檛 know who Peter is. The next thing Danielle knows she鈥檚 on her front steps pounding on the door. When she gets home, her mom doesn鈥檛 recognize her. Danielle tries to force her to go to the basement. Her mom is freaked and offers to give her money if she鈥檒l leave. Danielle rushes to the basement. She can hear her mother above calling the police on her.
The trapdoor opens. Peter appears (colorless). He says her name and stretches out his hand to come with him. He tells her she鈥檚 a forgotten one now and must come with them, The other kids come out one by one and circle Danielle. They repeat the words come with us. You are one of us. The circle tightens as they close in on her. Danielle breaks into a scream and gets loose. She runs upstairs but the house is also closing in on her. She runs into her dad and he tells her to get out. The police are coming. Danielle races upstairs thinking what can she do. She dedes to show them her room, but can鈥檛 remember which one it is. Then she sees the picture of the teddy bear wearing Peter鈥檚 eye glasses. The police grabs Danielle but she grabs the photo and holds it up and says 鈥淣ow Teddy can see how cute I am.鈥
They remember. They run to the basement. There鈥檚 no one there. Danielle holds up the photo. Suddenly he rises up from the floor (slime-free). A ddie comes by and says she鈥檚 glad everythings ok BRITTANY and then she calls Peter CRAIG. She laughs and says they really didn鈥檛 forget their own names right?
My Thoughts
NOT BAD! NOT BAD AT ALL! It really would be a nightmare if everyone around you (family and friends) that you loved just one day forgot you existed. I couldn鈥檛 even imagine it. How scary would it had been if Danielle鈥檚 parents were just too far gone to even remember the picture? Then what? Would she have had to go live with her aunt? What if she鈥檇 forgotten her? I think I see an episode like this on the Twilight Zone (if I鈥檓 not mistaken). The twist was good! I thought it was going to be that Danielle was going to become one of the slime people (the forgotten ones). But is the twist that Peter and Danielle are reincarnations of Brittany and Craig? Did Brittany and Craig swap bodies with Danielle and Peter? Are they somehow forgotten kids and are manipulating them? All very interesting theories to consider. The Nightmare Room series was one that attracted my attention a while ago after I finished the main Goosebump series and saw that there were many other series by R. L. Stein. I鈥檝e had some just sitting in my e-books and just didn鈥檛 get around to starting them But what better time than now that it鈥檚 October. Looking forward to reading the others.

Danielle has an annoying younger brother Peter. One day she pretends to hypnotize him to show off to her friend. But strangely it appears to work and Peter begins to act differently. The changes start to scare Danielle, who wonders how she is supposed to get the brother she knows back.
Before I review I want to say I am a huge RL Stine fan. His books (mainly fear Street and point horror) are books that really made me fall in love with reading when I was around 9 or 10 years old. But I have found this one, now I'm reading it as an adult to not be a favourite at all. As the main character is fifteen it is clear this series was aimed at a more mature audience than the authors Goosebumps series. In this one though I didn't feel Danielle was portrayed that different to the twelve year old leads in the goosebumps stories. Because she is meant to be older her actions or reactions seem silly at times and I can't say I enjoyed her all that much. I can't fault the writing at all. It's written to grip the reader and make them keep turning those pages to see what happens next.
Something I did like about reading this 22 years after publication is how much the young adult genre has really developed in recent years. The novels now show teenagers to have depth and struggles just like an adult protagonist would have. I found that to be really interesting and it's something I'll be taking notice of when I read other older ya novels this year.
If you like Goosebumps then the first book in the Nightmare Room series is very similar and easy to read. But sadly its not a personal favourite of mine.
Danielle Warner and Peter are siblings. Danielle is older and she is annoyed by her brother. She wished that she was an only child. Danielle pretended to hypnotize Peter but it became all to real because Peter wasn't himself anymore. Danielle blamed herself but it was actually because of their new house, the Forget Me house. It makes the residents be forgotten. She broke the spell when she showed her parents the portrait of Peter's teddybear (I saw this coming). They were able to rescue Peter from the basement and the family was reunited. The twist was when Addie, Danielle's best friend, came over she called Danielle Brittany and Peter Craig. She said she knew them way before when they moved in with their aunt and uncle not mom and dad.

Picking up my old battered copy of the first book in The Nightmare Room series it brings a smile on face remembering the many hours I spent at our schools book store buying as many R L Stine books as I could find.
Don't You Forget Me! brings a chill down my spine it does have a slight deja vu of The Haunted School with a chilling twist. However haunting the chilling front cover is I felt the ending is a little bit rushed another chapter could be included to explore a more memorable ending to the story as the forgotten house lives on.
I love to see more interest in The Nightmare Room in bookstores after Goosebumps it is the second best series R L Stine has written.
This reminds me of Be Careful What You Wish from the Goosebumps. Despite it being a different series, the plot and writing style is very similar. It's silly but nevertheless a page turner. I know he tried to bump up the age of the character to 15 y/o but Danielle, the sister still seemed a bit immature to me. The way she talks and the jealousy she had for her 9 year old brother was ridiculous. The ending was great and I wish there was a book about the house origin.
Ayeeee, what's going on with that ending?!! I was so tensed up about a bad ending, but then a good ending seemed on the shore, but-but then!! I loved that twist, phew. Even though this series is perhaps aimed at a young audience, it still got me there. Smooth, thrilling, and a fast read book. I'm still shocked about the ending, but that reporter... something doesn't sit well with me. How did he keep vanishing in a sudden? I wish him to have a better presence in the book

I remember this episode starring Amanda Bynes but, it had a happier ending. I'm just gagged. This is such a Y2K throwback. I love this series and recommend watching the episode for the differences too.
Such a fun book! Geared towards a slightly older audience than the Goosebumps series, we find a family has moved into a house that makes people forget who they are, and thus everyone around them forgets them too. More adult themes, but still quick paced and fun.
Were we meant to like Addie as a friend? Like, she wasn鈥檛 abhorrent like most of the side characters in R. L. Stine books, but she had her moments where she pissed me off. Other than that, I had like zero opinions on her.
The best nightmare room ever!!!!, There are some horror part that makes scares me. Actually all R.L.Stine books is very good. The house with a dark room.
