As much as people claimed that this book was bad it truly wasn't but it wasn't also really the type of book that would stick with you once you close the cover of the book. Although it is one of those older books and held a bunch of reminders for me of what life was like before the computer truly took over along with cell phones it still has a message to teach us about refugees, learning about those who are different from us and also allowing them to keep themselves as they are even when we want to change them to "supposedly" make them more acceptable to society.

The plot of the story was a bit on the bland side and didn't have much emotional attachments to bring the reader in. And one of the biggest disappointments to me was the fact that the characters were so flat and 2D since they had so much promise but they annoying one was truly annoying, our protagonist is a lovable boy who is emotionally imbalanced and the rest could have fit Arthur if they had animal shapes.

All in all it is a good book to have kids read before getting to such subjects like wars, their effects and refugees like the Syrian refugees.

Makes one aware of how hard it would be to come from a different country and try to fit in. My daughter was able to relate to kids in her class that are new to our country.

Really cute story about an American family who takes in a Vietnamese family of refugees and helps them settle in Illinois in the wintertime.

One of those books that’ll introduce a kid to the idea of immigrants- and immigrant kids their own age. It gives a kid perspective. It was realistically written, down-to-earth, and also funny.

I enjoyed it.

This book was written in 1985. It is about a middle school student. The main character's family hosts a family that has moved from Vietnam. There are a couple of things that are culturally not acceptable anymore, but overall, the book has relevance.

When I read this book in school, it made me hate reading. It takes a special kind of book to have that effect on someone who loves books as much as I do. This is one of those books. This was such a steaming pile of insipid crap, I never wanted to touch another book after I finished it. The main character's an idiot, and the story sucks. If you see this book lying around, throw it in the trash where it belongs.
