Aleksandr Blok (Russian: 袗谢械泻褋邪薪写褉 袗谢械泻褋邪薪写褉芯胁懈褔 袘谢芯泻) was born in Saint Petersburg, into a sophisticated and intellectual family. Some of his relatives were men of letters, his father being a law professor in Warsaw, and his maternal grandfather the rector of Saint Petersburg State University. After his parents' separation, Blok lived with aristocratic relatives at the Shakhmatovo manor near Moscow, where he discovered the philosophy of Vladimir Solovyov, and the verse of then-obscure 19th-century poets, Fyodor Tyutchev and Afanasy Fet. These influences would be fused and transformed into the harmonies of his early pieces, later collected in the book Ante Lucem.

He fell in love with Lyubov (Lyuba) Dmitrievna Mendeleeva (daughter of the renowned chemist Dmitri Mendeleev) and married her in 1903. Later, she would involve him in a complicated love-hate relationship with his fellow Symbolist Andrey Bely. To Lyuba he dedicated a cycle of poetry that brought him fame, Stikhi o prekrasnoi Dame (Verses About the Beautiful Lady, 1904). In it, he transformed his humble wife into a vision of the feminine soul and eternal womanhood (The Greek Sophia of Solovyov's teaching). Blok's few relatives currently live in Moscow, Riga, Rome and England.

During the last period of his life, Blok concentrated primarily on political themes, pondering the messianic destiny of his country (Vozmezdie, 1910-21; Rodina, 1907-16; Skify, 1918). Influenced by Solovyov's doctrines, he was full of vague apocalyptic apprehensions and often vacillated between hope and despair. "I feel that a great event was coming, but what it was exactly was not revealed to me," he wrote in his diary during the summer of 1917. Quite unexpectedly for most of his admirers, he accepted the October Revolution as the final resolution of these apocalyptic yearnings.

By 1921 Blok had become disillusioned with the Russian Revolution. He did not write any poetry for three years. Blok complained to Maksim Gorky that he had given up his "faith in the wisdom of humanity". He explained to his friend Korney Chukovsky why he could not write poetry any more: "All sounds have stopped. Can't you hear that there are no longer any sounds?".[2]. Within a few days Blok became sick. His doctors requested him to be sent for medical treatment abroad, but he was not allowed to leave the country. Gorky pleaded for a visa. On 29 May 1921, he wrote to Anatoly Lunacharsky: "Blok is Russia's finest poet. If you forbid him to go abroad, and he dies, you and your comrades will be guilty of his death". Blok received permission only on 10 August, after his death.[2]

Several months earlier, Blok had delivered a celebrated lecture on Pushkin, whom he believed to be an iconic figure capable of uniting White and Red Russia. His death and the execution of his fellow poet Nikolai Gumilev by Cheka in 1921 were seen by many as the end of the entire generation of Russians [2]. Nina Berberova, then a young girl, recalled about the mood at his funeral: "I was suddenly and sharply orphaned... The end is coming. We are lost."

Lunga poesia, da leggere tutta in una volta, possibilmente una fredda e piovosa sera d'inverno.
Ho letto l'edizione Einaudi, che ha una bellissima traduzione, che mantiene ritmo e rime vicine all'originale (non so quanto a scapito del contenuto, che per貌 猫 piuttosto semplice). Rimane quindi il tono a volte di canzonetta volgare, a volte di marcia militare, a volte sospeso e tetro, che contribuisce al fascino di questa poesia.
L'immagine che domina 猫 una di quelle che resta: dodici uomini marciano nella bufera, di notte in citt脿. Sono parte e rappresentano la Rivoluzione (quella russa, ma anche, come suggerito in introduzione, qualsiasi altra), e sono pur sempre semplicemente dodici uomini che tremano nel buio.
Ho apprezzato anche il piccolo riassunto a fine volume, che in effetti rende pi霉 scorrevole la lettura.
Il difetto di questa edizione 猫 nell'introduzione: un po' troppo densa, ma soprattutto parla tanto dell'enigmatico e sorprendente finale, che sarebbe bello invece lasciar scoprire al lettore direttamente dalla poesia (sarebbe bastato mettere il commento in postfazione). Pure la copertina del libro riporta il finale, ma dai!

"I Dodici" 猫 un poema su cui 猫 stato scritto tantissimo, ma che non comprenderemo mai totalmente. Io l'ho letto e riletto in quattro lingue (prima in russo, poi in traduzione in italiano, cinese e inglese). I commenti e le spiegazioni si sprecano, ogni parola 猫 fonte di riflessione e discussione. La Pietrogrado avvolta dalla bufera di neve e dalla rivoluzione 猫 fisica e brutale, ma allo stesso tempo mistica e spirituale. L'opera torna allo stile del primo Blok, quello simbolista dei Versi sulla Bellissima Dama, trascina il lettore in un universo che 猫 tanto storico quanto immaginario, evoca una rivoluzione che trascende le vicende reali che fanno da base per la narrazione. La lingua 猫 originale e naturalmente (come sempre in poesia) molto sacrificata anche nelle migliori traduzioni (in italiano ottima quella di De Michelis). Senza dubbio uno dei capolavori dell'Epoca d'Argento russa, una lettura breve ma estremamente intensa, non semplice ma davvero sconvolgente e indimenticabile.

Rating is for the Greek translation of 1945 (Kolaklidis);
The introductory text is refreshingly impartial for its time but otherwise more or less generic;
Translation of good quality, need to compare with Ritsos and others as well as the original Russian;
The imagery is heavy handed at times but never fails to be interesting and the ambiance is always well represented;
Needs to be read side by side with some of Mayakovskys early political poetry. Blok seems to in many ways prefigure him and deconstruct him simultaneously here;
The ambiguous figure of Jesus in the end paired with the otherwise antireligious theme of the poem is really quite striking. I would say the poem is very well deserving of its classic status just for that stanza alone;
The translation feels clunky at times but generally it does a good enough job rhythm-wise and in depicting the dialectical range of the poem and the switch of registers;

Dit gedicht verscheen begin 1918, kort na de revolutie, en maakte hierdoor grote indruk. Voor velen was het ook een schok dat Blok achter de revolutie stond. Ook al is de inhoud modern, is de vorm klassiek Russisch: Aleksandr Poesjkin had dit kunnen schrijven, als hij toen nog in leven was.

Wat Blok precies wil zeggen met dit gedicht, blijft onduidelijk. En misschien is het ook minder belangrijk: Het gaat om de revolutie. Je voelt, hoort en proeft, de energie, de beweging, de sfeer, de gewelddadige kracht. De sterke tekeningen van Wladimir Bielkine laten je zien wat voelt: Dit is revolutie!!!

Se volete fare un salto nel passato ai tempi della rivoluzione...Blok 猫 sicuramente uno di quegli autori che fanno al caso vostro anche se forse non tutti riusciranno a capire o apprezzare il suo punto di vista!
