Carlos Fuentes Mac铆as was a Mexican writer and one of the best-known novelists and essayists of the 20th century in the Spanish-speaking world. Fuentes influenced contemporary Latin American literature, and his works have been widely translated into English and other languages.

Fuentes was born in Panama City, Panama; his parents were Mexican. Due to his father being a diplomat, during his childhood he lived in Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Washington, Santiago, and Buenos Aires. In his adolescence, he returned to Mexico, where he lived until 1965. He was married to film star Rita Macedo from 1959 till 1973, although he was an habitual philanderer and allegedly, his affairs - which he claimed include film actresses such as Jeanne Moreau and Jean Seberg - brought her to despair. The couple ended their relationship amid scandal when Fuentes eloped with a very pregnant and then-unknown journalist named Silvia Lemus. They were eventually married.

Following in the footsteps of his parents, he also became a diplomat in 1965 and served in London, Paris (as ambassador), and other capitals. In 1978 he resigned as ambassador to France in protest over the appointment of Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, former president of Mexico, as ambassador to Spain. He also taught courses at Brown, Princeton, Harvard, Penn, George Mason, Columbia and Cambridge.

Carlos Fuentes Mac铆as fue un escritor mexicano y uno de los novelistas y ensayistas m谩s conocidos en el mundo de habla espa帽ola. Fuentes influy贸 en la literatura contempor谩nea de Am茅rica Latina, y sus obras han sido ampliamente traducidas al ingl茅s y otros idiomas.

Fuentes naci贸 en la ciudad de Panam谩, Panam谩, sus padres eran mexicanos. Debido a su padre era un diplom谩tico, durante su infancia vivi贸 en Montevideo, R铆o de Janeiro, Washington, Santiago y Buenos Aires. En su adolescencia regres贸 a M茅xico, donde vivi贸 hasta 1965. Estuvo casado con la estrella de cine Rita Macedo de 1959 hasta 1973, aunque era un mujeriego habitual y, al parecer, sus asuntos - que se ha cobrado incluyen actrices como Jeanne Moreau y Jean Seberg, su llevados a la desesperaci贸n. A revolution starts in the battlefields, but once it gets corrupted, even though military battles are still won, it鈥檚 lost. And we鈥檙e all to blame. We鈥檝e let ourselves be divided and directed by the lustful, the ambitious, the mediocre. Those who want a real, radical, intransigent revolution are, unfortunately, ignorant, bloody men.

Ideals perish鈥� Cynicism survives鈥�
Artemio Cruz. So that was the name of the new world rising out of the civil war; that was the name of those who had come to take his place. Unfortunate land that has to destroy its old possessors with each new generation and put in their place new owners just as rapacious and ambitious as the old ones.

Power beckons鈥� Overstep everybody鈥� Take power in stride鈥� But power corrupts鈥�

The book鈥檚 title shows truth in advertising. We are at the deathbed of a man 71 years old. He reminisces about his life and in the process gives us a mini-history of modern Mexico. He also tells us in too-great detail about his pains and symptoms. [TMI as young people say.] His wife, daughter and son-in-law are usually by his bedside. He despises all of them.

Like many men who were in war, in his old age he goes back to those events as the most significant in his life. In Artemio鈥檚 case it was episodes during the Mexican Revolution/civil war of roughly 1910-1920. He fought and won on the side of the revolutionaries overthrowing the landed estate owners and other rich people.

But Artemio lost his idealism and eventually became one of the 1% he helped overthrow. He was elected to national politics and promptly used his position to accrue wealth.

He had a son that he encouraged to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Maybe this was an attempt to recover his youthful idealism?

In all his business affairs Artemio felt that an accident of geography had him born on the Mexican side of the border. In his heart he 'belonged on the other side' with the Norte Americanos 鈥� the Donald Trump characters he wheeled and dealed with in his business doings.

The book jumps around chronologically from past to present and sometimes becomes confusing. We go from 1919, at the time of the fighting, then back to 1913 when he met the love of his life then to his son in the Spainish Civil War in the 1930s. We wait until the last chapter to learn details of his birth and childhood and in the 1890s.

Of course he had many mistresses along the way and we learn bits and pieces of his relationships with some of them. His fantastic wealth is illustrated when we read of his annual New Year鈥檚 bash for 100 of Mexico鈥檚 elite at his exquisite mansion. Food and singers and waste all around as low-paid busboys hustle drinks and cooks slave in the kitchen.

But all Artemio is left with are memories of the war, of his first love, and the taste of ash.

La Muerte de Artemio Cruz = The Death of Artemio Cruz, Carlos Fuentes

The Death of Artemio Cruz is a novel written in 1962, by Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes. It is considered to be a milestone in the Latin American Boom. Artemio Cruz, a corrupt soldier, politician, journalist, tycoon, and lover, lies on his deathbed, recalling the shaping events of his life, from the Mexican Revolution through the development of the Institutional Revolutionary Party. His family crowds around, pressing him to reveal the location of his will; a priest provides extreme unction, angling for a deathbed confession and reconciliation with the Church (while Artemio indulges in obscene thoughts about the birth of Jesus); his private secretary has come with audiotapes of various corrupt dealings, many with gringo diplomats and speculators. Punctuating the sordid record of betrayal is Cruz's awareness of his failing body and his keen attachment to sensual life. Finally his thoughts decay into a drawn-out death.

La novela, publicada en 1962, no tiene nada que envidiar a otras posteriores que se encuentran entre las mejores y m谩s experimentales de sus respectivos autores como 鈥淐onversaci贸n en la catedral鈥� (1969) y 鈥淥to帽o del patriarca鈥� (1975), con las que guarda grandes semejanzas de forma y fondo.
鈥淰iva M茅xico, jijos de su rechingada鈥�
Tambi茅n en esta novela cabr铆a parafrasear la famosa cuesti贸n que plante贸 el escritor peruano en su novela: 驴en qu茅 momento se hab铆a jodido M茅xico? Pregunta ret贸rica que parte de una premisa falsa, esto es, que hubo alg煤n momento en el que no estuvieron jodidos. No conozco ning煤n pueblo que no haya estado jodido desde siempre, no conozco una revoluci贸n en contra de la opresi贸n de un pueblo que no haya acabado oprimiendo a ese mismo pueblo. Nunca faltan los Artemio Cruz dispuestos a la rapi帽a en nombre de la revoluci贸n, a engrandecer su nombre en el supuesto engrandecimiento de la revoluci贸n y que contribuyen a acabar con la revoluci贸n encumbrando a otra casta de opresores que tratar谩n a su pueblo de igual o similar forma que los opresores depuestos. As铆 se termina siempre por muy idealistas que sean los objetivos y por muy justas que sean las demandas, por eso, porque nunca faltan los Artemio Cruz.
鈥淎 veces, me parece que la falta de sangre y de muerte nos desespera. Es como si s贸lo nos sinti茅ramos vivos rodeados de destrucci贸n y fusilamientos鈥�
La novela es exigente con el lector, que deber谩 estar dispuesto a poner todo de su parte para lidiar con los varios narradores que se alternan sin previo aviso, con los textos en primera, segunda y tercera persona que se suceden sin interrupci贸n, con el frecuente flujo de conciencia, con los varios planos temporales y espaciales sucesivos y simult谩neos que contribuyen a la sensaci贸n de que la historia se mueve en c铆rculos, que nada cambia, que todo acaba siempre igual, con los mismos perdedores de siempre鈥�
鈥淓res quien eres porque supiste chingar y no te dejaste chingar; eres quien eres porque no supiste chingar y te dejaste chingar: cadena de la chingada que nos aprisiona a todos鈥�
鈥� para contarnos una historia de traici贸n, de ambici贸n voraz, de odio y rencor, de remordimientos, tambi茅n de superaci贸n, de amor, de sacrificio, de pasi贸n, una historia personal de Artemio Cruz, desde su nacimiento hasta su muerte, que encarna al mismo tiempo la historia colectiva de la revoluci贸n mexicana.
鈥溾€� el padrecito le da la salvaci贸n eterna a don Gamaliel, a cambio de que don Gamaliel le d茅 la salvaci贸n en la tierra al padrecito鈥�
No s茅 si me irrita un poco la idea del exitoso pr贸cer sin escr煤pulos que al borde de la muerte sufre por el rumbo que cogi贸 su vida, por los amores que no pudo vivir, por las desgracias familiares, ese est煤pido e impotente consuelo de que los ricos tambi茅n lloran y que el deterioro f铆sico, la enfermedad y la muerte acaba por igualarnos a todos. Supongo que todo contribuye a dar volumen a un personaje tan contradictorio y, lamentablemente, tan frecuente.
鈥溾€� descubrir谩s que la virtud es s贸lo deseable, pero la soberbia es s贸lo necesaria...s贸lo al final, aunque sea al final, la soberbia es superflua y la humildad necesaria鈥�

P.S. Encontr茅 estas declaraciones del autor que me parece que resumen muy bien los porqu茅s y los c贸mos de esta novela:
鈥樷€楽e relatan aqu铆 las doce horas de agon铆a de este viejo que muere de infarto al mesenterio, mal que los m茅dicos no descubren sino hasta el 煤ltimo momento. En el transcurso de estas doce horas se interpolan los doce d铆as que 茅l considera definitivos en su vida. Hay un tercer elemento, el subconsciente, especie de Virgilio que lo gu铆a por los doce c铆rculos de su infierno, y que es la otra cara de su espejo, la otra mitad de Artemio Cruz: es el T煤 que habla en futuro. Es el subconsciente que se aferra a un porvenir que el Yo 鈥攅l viejo moribundo鈥� no alcanzar谩 a conocer. El viejo Yo es el presente, en tanto el 脡l rescata el pasado de Artemio Cruz. Se trata de un di谩logo de espejos entre las tres personas, entre los tres tiempos que forman la vida de este personaje duro y enajenado. En su agon铆a, Artemio trata de reconquistar, por medio de la memoria, sus doce d铆as definitivos, d铆as que son, en realidad, doce opciones. Su biograf铆a espiritual es m谩s importante que su biograf铆a f铆sica. Las negativas, las traiciones, las elecciones, las presiones a las que su esp铆ritu se somete lo empujan al mundo de los objetos, en el cual 茅l es un objeto m谩s. En el tiempo presente de la novela, Artemio es un hombre sin libertad: la ha agotado a fuerza de elegir. Bueno o malo, al lector toca decidirlo.鈥�

carlos fuentes is another one of those latin american writers that makes me hate myself. beyond his tremendous skill as a novelist, he's good looking, well dressed, worldly, dashing, daring, and claims to have slept with jean seberg and jeanne moreau. the bastard.

and then i come across the article below and all my self-hatred is directed solely at him: the series mentioned would surely be my favorite bunch of books ever written... except they don't exist.

"In the fall of 1967 I happened to be in London at the same time as the Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa. We had both read, recently and with admiration, as well as a touch of envy, Edmund Wilson's portraits of the American Civil War in ''Patriotic Gore.'' Sitting in a pub in Hampstead, we thought it would be a good idea to have a comparable book on Latin America. An imaginary portrait gallery immediately stepped forward, demanding incarnation: the Latin American dictators.

Individuals such as Mexico's Santa Anna, the peg-legged cockfighter who lost the Southwest to President James K. Polk's Manifest Destiny; or Venezuela's Juan Vicente Gomez, who announced his own death in order to punish those who dared celebrate it; or El Salvador's Maximiliano Hernandez Martinez, who fought off scarlet fever by having street lights wrapped in red paper; or Bolivia's Enrique Penaranda, of whom his mother said, ''If I had known that my son was going to be president, I would have taught him to read and write'' - all of them pose tremendous problems for Latin American novelists: How to compete with history? How to create characters richer, crazier, more imaginative than those offered by history?

Mr. Vargas Llosa and I sought an answer by inviting a dozen Latin American authors to write a novella each - no more than 50 pages per capita - on their favorite national tyrant. The collective volume would be called ''Los Padres de las Patrias'' (''The Fathers of the Fatherlands''), and the French publisher Claude Gallimard took it up instantly. Unfortunately, it proved impossible to coordinate the multiple tempos and varied wills of a wide variety of writers who included, if my recall is as good as that of Augusto Roa Bastos' character El Supremo, Mr. Roa Bastos himself, Argentina's Julio Cortazar, Venezuela's Miguel Otero Silva, Colombia's Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Cuba's Alejo Carpentier, the Dominican Republic's Juan Bosch and Chile's Jose Donoso and Jorge Edwards (one of them promised to take on a Bolivian dictator). When the project fell through, three of these authors went on to write full-length novels of their own: Mr. Carpentier (''Reasons of State''), Mr. Garcia Marquez (''The Autumn of the Patriarch'') and Mr. Roa Bastos (''I the Supreme'')."

Your mind is chaotically travelling from a moment in your life to another. There is no sense to the order in which you are remembering episodes of your life, both personal and social. Past loves, treacheries, escape from poverty and ascent on the wealth scale, history of your losses come in random flashbacks to you. And you wake up and listen to fragments of conversation, try to discern gestures or physical traits of the ones around you at present and you are only now seeing the invisible threads connecting your life and your ascent to the development of Mexican revolution and implicitly Mexican history. In this random recapitulation of your life, you cling to the memory of people that meant much to you: a prostitute who loved you sincerely and not for money and whom you loved more than you loved anybody else, your son whom you lost because of the civil war in Spain, your wife Catalina who only meant to take revenge when she married you and so on. Going back and forth in time, you keep remembering Regina, the only person who didn鈥檛 love you for your wealth.

Written in a wonderful narrative style, the story of your life impresses. The lyricism and the exceptional beauty of the phrases make the tragedy of your life sharper through antagonization:
鈥淢idday had barely passed: the rays of the sun in decline passed through the root of tropical leaves like water through a sieve, pelting down hard. The time of paralyzed branches, when even the river seemed not to flow.鈥�
It was really not easy to make sense of the disarray that your mind is displaying through Fuentes鈥� words, but it was so rewarding when I succeeded in doing so. I mentally experienced such wonderfully narrated moments, in spite of their sadness, that I will always remember you like a character who, although highly unlikable, has a certain je-ne-sais-quoi that attracts and stays in your memory alive.

It's hard when a good friend recommends a book so highly and you can't come to the party. Artemio Cruz, the great Latin American novel? I can't see it. In synopsis, maybe, it's got everything the genre requires: ex-revolutionary soldier turned landowner through loveless relationship with big man's daughter becomes corrupt politician and media magnate and reflects, on his death-bed, on all the people he's shafted. It's the Citizen Kane of Mexico. But for all that, to me it doesn't have half the power of Juan Rulfo's Pedro Paramo, which treats of similar themes (if less explicitly) in a third the space, and if you throw in Rulfo's short stories (another 100 pages, still less than Cruz's 300) then I know for damn sure which revolutionary Mexican I'll be siding with. Not Carlos Fuentes.

What's good about Artemio Cruz? It's got some rip-roaring action, some serious drama, mainly in the flashbacks to the Revolution, which take up at least half of the narrative. The words seem to fly off Fuentes's pen; it moves fast. And by the end you're left with an elemental, hard-boiled, cartoon-like tapestry of revolutionary Mexico that is not dissimilar to a Sergio Leone film, though lacking the soundtrack and the humour, and given an extra heft by its aura of historical accuracy and, yes, passion. It's deeply-felt, but as if felt by some obsessive given to only one strain of feeling 鈥� some bitter sensualist fixated on thwarted love and evil. Which is fine 鈥� of course we need those books too. But it's limited. That said, there's some epic sequences here: the battle in the ravine and Cruz's subsequent escape into the mine and duel with the rival Colonel springs to mind as the best of them.

Still, to this reviewer it all seems kind of pat. The death bed reflections of a corrupt magnate? Yeah, well there'd better be a twist in there. And maybe that's what Fuentes had in mind with the 鈥� to me, arbitrary, elementary, mechanical 鈥� supposedly experimental structure, an unvarying repeated A/B/C in which A is a third-person flashback (focussed on Cruz, never omniscient), B is a first-person view of the hospital room, and C is a second-person inner monologue which seemed like sheer show business to me, unnecessary for anything but establishing Fuentes's avant garde credentials. Tellingly, the third person occupies by far the most space here, and I for one gritted my teeth through the other sections for the sake of a return to this main body of the story. A sample:

鈥� but I look at my fingernails when I reach out to touch my frozen feet which I no longer feel, I look at my brand-new blue, blackish fingernails that I've put on especially to die, ahhh! it won't go away, I don't want that blue skin, that skin painted over with lifeless blood, no, no, I don't want it, blue is for other things, blue for the sky, blue for memories, blue for horses that ford rivers, blue for shiny horses and green for the sea, blue for flowers, but not blue for me, no, no, no, ahhh! ahhh! and I have to lie back because I don't know where to go, how to move, I don't know where to put my arms and the legs I don't feel, I don't know where to look, I don't want to get up anymore鈥�


And so on. Now far be it from me to demand that every sentence in a book be beautiful. Pedro Paramo, for example, has many sentences that, taken alone, don't make much of an impression at all. But they're to the point. That above passage, and pages and pages like it, I'd just as soon Fuentes had thrown in the trash. But you start cutting a big jangled mess like this and you just might find all you have left is a kind of James M. Cain wartime potboiler, and I dare say that's not what Fuentes was going for. Might have made a better read than this, though. Spare me the trimmings.

I had the strangest reading experience reading this, considered by many to be a masterpiece of Mexican literature. The protagonist is an old man at death鈥檚 door, seemingly mostly bedridden. We are seeing his life in snippets, probably memories that pass through his dying brain as he approaches the end of life. Can鈥檛 be sure you like him at first - he appears to have been a soldier and criminal, maybe a corrupt senator and even president, a lover and whoremonger. It鈥檚 hard to grasp exactly who he is or the people he鈥檚 remembering are, but as I prepped for the end of year holidays and dipped into the book and his recollections, I thought of how my own life would surface in my dying brain, what I might recall, and how I might interact with those around trying to care for me at the end of life.

Artemio鈥檚 life supposedly stands in as a metaphor for Mexican history, and I can鈥檛 speak about that. But there are many sections where if I couldn鈥檛 grasp the historical significance, I could feel the pathos and emotional depth of the scene in a man鈥檚 life, and the experiences of the others there with him. The disjointed mess of the scenes without context until sometimes several pages in were occasionally a struggle to follow, but then really work as part of the flow of memories and regrets and illustration of the man whose death we share. The last surgery and what the doctors discover is a little overkill as metaphors go for corruption of the soul, but overall, the book as a tapestry of a man鈥檚 life and a nation鈥檚 story is quite moving.

In May of 2012, Carlos Fuentes passed away. Recently, a Mexican colleague returned from Mexico with a Spanish copy of The Death of Artemio Cruz for me so I thought it was time to tackle it. I had read the English version a few years ago and loved the story and his language (through a translator). My Spanish is getting better (this is the biggest book I have read in Spanish) but I cannot deny it was a challenge and yet, very rewarding.

I came to two observations. First, I love how Fuentes does a rant and it is even much better in Spanish. His play with the words makes one read for the sheer pleasure of the language. You can't beat that. Second, and the weirdest part is that I felt different towards the hero than when I read it in English. Artemio Cruz is a rich pompous newspaper magnate dying on his death bed reflecting on his life. In the English version, I really disliked the guy and in the Spanish version, I had empathy for him. Why? I don't know.

This is a classic of Mexican literature, written in 1962. Artemio Cruz is symbolic for Mexico and its history (note the dying part). Fuentes gives us Mexican history in little spurts so you don't need to be an expert here but his characterization of the man, from birth to death is the strength of the story. Think of it, torn apart by the Mexican revolution, spurred on by the industrialism and the greed of the PRI of the 1940s and challenged by its neighbor to the north in the 1950s, the man went through a lot! Fuentes' point of view still stands after 50 years. Viva Mexico!

el estilo de fuentes parece que simplemente no es para mi. tendr茅 que leer "aura" para ver como es en algo m谩s corto, pero en sus novelas largas lo encuentro como desagradablemente enfocado a estilo sobre substancia. adem谩s, su prosa no me es agradable, me parece falta de vida, demasiada acad茅mica. y, la verdad, encuentro pretencioso la forma en que sin m谩s busca traer "grandes ideas" antes que contar una historia.
para ser justos el libro tenia buenos momentos. la relaci贸n de artemio con su esposa me pareci贸 un comentario muy interesante al trato de las mujeres en M茅xico, otras secciones en particular las relacionadas con el paso de artemio por la revoluci贸n tambi茅n era muy interesantes, y creo que es la visi贸n mas especifica de lo que es envejecer que he leido (que no es agradable, por supuesto, pero supongo que vale la lectura). pero las partes en segunda persona en particular, me parecieron insufribles. demasiado largas y demasiado enfocadas en meditaciones filos贸ficas cuando hay una historia en mano. "el mundo halucinante" de reinaldo arenas usa tambi茅n los tres tiempos verbales en diferentes secciones en el discurso y me pareci贸 mucho mejor, pues arenas es mucho m谩s animado, po茅tico e inventivo que fuentes.
esta es mi opini贸n del libro y mentiria si dijera otra, aunque tambi茅n me duele su reciente defuci贸n. a煤n cuando no disfruto de su estilo en particular me parece una obra digna de respeto y no me arrepiento de haberla leido. que descanse en paz, maestro fuentes.

Sinceramente, no me gust贸. Y s铆, entiendo lo que representa para la narrativa latinoamericana esta novela tan moderna. Pero no me gust贸. Y creo que si la hubiese le铆do en la universidad tampoco me gustar铆a. Me agrad贸 el tema y todo el rollo de contar la vida de Artemio Cruz desde el presente hasta el pasado (como si fuese el final, desarrollo e inicio, como una involuci贸n de la vida), pero no me gust贸 el estilo ni la prosa: es algo muy difuso para m铆. Muchos pasajes se me hicieron irrelevantes. Muy aburrido para mi gusto. Pues s铆, eso.

The Death of Artemio Cruz is the kind of book that makes me want to go up to the roof and yell 鈥� Everyone please go read it !鈥�, it鈥檚 THAT good.
Carlos Fuentes was an absolute genius!

If I have to summarize the book in one sentence, I guess it would be 鈥淭he Mexican Revolution and its aftermath examined through the life of a dying man鈥�.
Artemio was once an idealistic revolution soldier, disillusioned by the war, he turns into an exploiter of the revolution and a ruthless and corrupt businessman / politician who uses the newspaper he owns to blackmail his political and business opponents. He is dying and remembers the key events of his life on his deathbed.

The Death of Artemio Cruz is a very ambitious book, and Fuentes鈥� writing fulfils its ambitions and presents the readers a close examination of the intrinsically corruptive human nature which is at odds with the idealistic intentions of the Revolution and a sharp criticism of the political corruptions in post-revolution Mexico.

The book was a challenging read that demanded all my attention, however, what was even more difficult was to put the book down.
The reading experience was exhausting and exhilarating at the same time, with the exhilarating FAR outweighing the exhausting.

It鈥檚 challenging because the stories are told in non-chronological flashbacks of the dying man Artemio Cruz. On top of that three different narrative forms and tenses are used to indicate different stages of Cruz鈥檚 consciousness.
The first person narrative and present tense conveys his immediate responses to his physical pain and the activities of people around him; the second person narrative and future tense signals a comatose state where his consciousness wonders to a higher level and weighs and judges the choices he made in his life. The stream of consciousness style is heavily used in the first and second narrative. Then there is the third person and past tense where his key life events are told in a relatively conventional style.
What makes the book hard to put down is, first and foremost, Fuentes鈥� prose. It is so stunning. It is like a redolent, lush tropical forest.Rich and intoxicating.
Also, Fuentes always manages to stealthily hides bits of and pieces of clues in the stream of consciousness parts of the book. The satisfaction you get out of it is very much like playing jigsaw puzzles, only instead of getting a picture, what we get by piecing all the clues together is a life journey of well-rounded character. He is despicable but at times you can鈥檛 help but feel sympathetic.

I think this is a book that needs to be read at least twice to fully appreciate, as so much has been packed into this 300 page book.
I debated even writing a review because I felt that I didn鈥檛 not fully understand everything in the book.
However, I thought I would still put down my initial thoughts and maybe edit after my 2nd reading.
This is definitely one of my favourites this year and I highly recommend reading it!

I thought the premise of the story sounded interesting - Artemio Cruz (no relation to that other guy named Cruz) is a corrupt... well, everything: politician, soldier, man. He's on his deathbed now, and the story hops around in time to tell his story of each major event of his life, back to the "present" of his deathbed experience. The premise is great, I love the idea of the bouncing around, the storytelling aspect.

But the story itself was not always easy to read, and by that I mean the way that someone once told me they don't read and they consider James Patterson a "hard" author to read, because he's "difficult". Fuentes feels difficult to me to read, and it may very well be because I am not very well-versed in Mexican history, and I feel if I understood more of the historical context, I would have appreciated the story a lot more than I did. This is my own fault, not the fault of the author's.

But the reality is, it did mean I didn't understand a lot of the story. I could understand the corruption and much of the personality and relationships between the characters, but there was a distance I felt to the rest of the story that I can't quite put my finger on, but I've been wondering if it's something I'm not particularly able to put my finger on when it comes to a lot of the Latin American Boom authors, such as some of 's writing and what I've read by so far. Again, I don't blame the authors or the culture, because it's my own fault I don't understand the context in which they wrote. I expect a lot of the emotional distance I interpret in the reading is because of that context which is lost on me. Maybe I'll investigate that and then re-read some of these books and authors that didn't affect me as much as I feel they should have.
