Rob Scotton is the bestselling author and illustrator of "Russell the Sheep," and "Russell and the Lost Treasure." His latest book, "Splat the Cat" is the story of a young cat facing all the wonders and worries of his first day at cat school. Rob's work can also be found on greeting cards, ceramics, textiles, prints, stationery, and glassware. An honors graduate of Leicester Polytechnic, Rob now lives in Rutland, England, with his wife, Liz, who is also an artist.
Splat the Cat stories are so ridiculous that grownups rolls their eyes. And kids fall over on the floor laughing. Clearly, they are written for children. Even better, they are written for children who are just learning how to read, so they are packed with loads of repetition and rhymes, and, of course, fall-over-on-the-floor-laughing silliness.
Splat the cat strongly resembles a dust kitty with pipe-cleaner legs and tail -- don't ask me how I know about the dust kitty. I was surprised to see that more than one illustrator did the work for this collection because the continuity was amazing. Rob Scotton, the "creator" did the cover art and Robert Eberz illustrated four of the six stories, the rest were illustrated by teams including Charles Grosvenor, Joe Merkel and Rick Farley. Overall, the editor for this book series must be amazing.
I love Splat books. This story could be used to discuss rhyming words like in the title, rain and pain or spat and cat. Splat is a wonderful character, he's silly and kids love silly. The sillier the better. I would use this story to discuss the weather. Also the story is predictable, the children can get into rhythm with saying 'the rain is pain'.
Learning Experience:
It's time to rhyme. We would go back through the stroy and write down all the rhyming words in the story on chart paper. Then I would have the children clap the syallables and tell me how many it has.
So fun to read! I love how positive these books are without being preachy. Splat always finds a way to solve his problem without whining or moralizing (looking at you, Berenstein Bears). Just a fun book to read! My preschooler loves it!
My daughter and I loved reading these stories. She is 6 and just starting to get her reading wings and this was the perfect story collection to help her along the way. She had fun with the silly, tounge twisting rhymes and those silly ducks. I recommend Splat the Cat to all parents.
There are 6 stories in this collection. It is a nice, affordable way for children to have many Splat stories. I think the kiddos will enjoy having this much Splat all in one place.
