Seventeen-year-old Annabel Conway is tired of the Hillcrest High School elite making her life miserable because she’s not a size two. This summer, she's hiring a personal trainer to help her lose weight.
Annabel doesn’t expect her trainer to be a gorgeous guy around her age. Boys like Tegan are jerks. They pretend to like girls like her so they can make an idiot out of them. Been there, done that. Totally not going there again. She kind of hates him on principal. Blond. Muscular. Funny. It doesn’t help that he knows her measurements!
Soon, Tegan's so much more than that. He’s the boy who teaches her to box when she has a bad day. Who jogs with her and lets her set the pace. Who kisses her until she melts. He makes her feel beautiful regardless of what the scale says. Unlike her mom, he doesn’t expect perfection, and he doesn't try to shield her from the world like her dad and best friend. Tegan likes her the way she is.
But what happens when he’s not there? He can’t always be there
Will Annabel be able to stand on her own and learn that she already measures up? That her worth doesn’t lie in what the world thinks, the scale says, or even what Tegan tells her—but in herself?
I am a compulsive reader and writer who loves YA fiction.
I love nothing more than writing about young adults. There is something so fresh and fun about it. You can pretty much always find me with a book in my hand or open document in front of me.
I live in Southern California with my husband and two children.
This is my third book by Nyrae and I have now come to the realization that if I want to sleep then I shouldn't pick up one of her books. All three have been read in one sitting.
This is the first of hers that I have read from a girls POV and it did not disappoint!
As a curvy girl myself I could totally relate to Annabell and how she was feeling. And as for Tegan....swoon doesn't even come close. He is now my No 1 Book Boyfriend, just a wonderfully written character.
Nyrae Dawn just seems to have a great knack for writing teen characters with all of them having different problems to overcome in their lives without seeming all whiny & feeling sorry for themselves. They are all strong characters.
And the romance....oh my the romance. I get butterflies in my tummy and grin like an idiot, I actually felt like I was going on a first date!!!!!
Also I always seem to shed a tear and it's always to do with characters outside of the romance, a best friend or parent. There are just such beautiful moments and everyone has a reason for being there and you know exactly who everyone is. I don't think that even makes sense but that's what this book makes me do......gush!
I will literally read anything this author writes and if you like YA romance then you should too, you will NOT be disappointed :)
The Cover What is worse than faces/people on the cover? People who don’t look like the characters described in the book and are PDA-ing (yes, I’m aware that this is not a word). Good thing I have this in ebook format because I really don’t want to be seen with it in public. This is one of the cases of “Don’t judge a book by its cover though so I’m going to forgive it because the book is so great.
The Story Annabel is tired of being teased and criticized for her weight. She decides to lose weight during the summer before senior year and registers at a gym. She did not expect that her trainer would be her age, male and über-gorgeous. There’s more to him than his looks though like there’s more to Annabel and her weight. Through Tegan Annabel learns how to accept herself and to believe in herself, that she doesn’t need anyone to save her or to protect her. Tegan also shows her that not all boys are shallow jerks and that nobody is perfect.
The Protagonist Oh, Annabel. Because of the jerks in her school and even worse her own mother, she felt worthless and not loved. She felt like being herself was not enough, that she would never be enough. It broke my heart. The thing is that in her mind she knows that she shouldn’t care what her schoolmates or her mother say, she knew she was not ugly but it’s harder to accept these kind of thoughts than letting taunts get to you. It was a long and painful journey but Annabel learned that nobody is perfect and no one can make her feel bad if she doesn’t let them. She learns that she can stand on her own and she can do things for herself and doesn’t need to rely on others to tell her that she can do it as long as she believes in herself.
The Heart Rate Tegan was perfect. No scratch that. He was definitely NOT perfect, but nobody is, that’s what this book is trying to tell us. Tegan has his own problems and issues and it takes a while before he lets Annabel in. He was however perfect for Annabel. He accepted her for who she is and didn’t care about how she looked. He supported her no matter what. When he pushed her to work harder and trained with her, it wasn’t because HE wanted her to lose weight but because he knew SHE wanted it herself but needed a little confindence push. I just love how he knew how to make her feel better and how he gave her genuine compliments without being corny. When Annabel was with Tegan, she only saw her good sides, because he made her feel beautiful because he never judged her. On the other side, when Tegan was with Annabel he could just BE, he could shed the responsibility for his mom and little brother he thought he had to carry all alone. What I love about Tegan and Annabel’s love is that it was never ever cheesy. It wasn’t insta-love and even when they were officially together, it took a while before they knew they were in love and say “I love you. This was non of those epic, inevitable, magnetic loves where one cannot live without the other but the love where you learn to be together but not depend on eachother. Yes, they were there for eachother (“We’re a team) but that doesn’t mean that they had to save one another. For the longest time Annabel thought that Tegan was perfect and maybe even too good for her but she learned that it wasn’t fair of her to put him on a pedestal and expect him to shield and defend her from the world and to always be there for her because she knows that she’s strong enough to do it on her own. My favourite quote is:
“It’s not him setting the pace and me trying to catch up or vice versa. We walk away together, equal.
The Good - Inspirational but not preachy: Annabel portrays every girl and woman in the world who has insecurities, i.e EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US. It might not be weight issues, it might be a birthmark (like Annabel’s friend Emily) or a nose or, or, or. In a world where everybody strives for perfection thanks to unrealistic photoshopped magazines, which dictate the standard for beauty, it is no wonder that we have such a warped view of beauty and lose sight of what’s important: It’s not about how we look but WHO we are that counts. Nyrae Dawn (awesome name btw) packed a few life lessons in this book but she’s never preachy about it. It never felt out of place. Annabel’s realizations come through her reflections of actions and words of those around her, not through a miracle epiphany. - Tegan’s family: I just love Tegan’s mom, she is this incredible woman who literally embraced Annabel into her family and was the warm and accepting mother figure Annabel never had. Tim, Tegan’s little brother, is paralyzed but is full of positivity and life and doesn’t let the fact that he’s wheelchair bound define him and he’s hilarious. I love their family dynamic. (A shout out to Annabel’s dad who was really awesome too, even though he didn’t really get her but he was supportive and a good balance to her mother because he let her know that he loved her no matter what.) - (Safe) Sex: It wasn’t like they wanted to jump eachothers bones from the beginning. No, when it happened it was at the right time because they both felt that it was right. I love how Tegan never pressured Annabel, it comes up a few times but he was never the one to push it and only when she told him that she was ready that he acted on it. Their first time was so realistically done. It wasn’t Tegan’s first time but he was still nervous because it was the first time with someone he truly cared about, which was incredibly cute. You just know that these two truly cared for one another on more than a physical level and that they trust eachother. - No sappy happy ending: Don’t worry this book has a happy ending but that doesn’t mean that by the end everyone was miraculously changed and suddenly BFF with Annabel. It’s not about how those around her change but it’s about how it’s Annabel who changes and how she deals with them differently. - Mini bonus point: DAIR FEELS!!! While the story is nothing like Dan an Blair’s in Gossip Girl, there were so many moments that reminded me of them (namely “We’re a team and “Equals).
The Bad N/A
The Rating ★★★★ This was again one of these books that totally took me by surprise. It made me laugh and cry and feel all tingly and happy inside by the end. It was realistic but incredibly romantic at the same time. It was a story of finding love and acceptance but also about how to be yourself and to believe in yourself no matter what anyone else says.
YAY! Annabel and Tegan's story! :-) This is one of those books where the MC's voice will have you totally giggling, while the overall message is a serious one. It's adorable, heart-warming, and important.
Aww...This book was so adorable!! I was a bit afraid to read this but it worked out really well.
Annabel
In the beginning I thought I wouldn't like the heroine. She was insecure and wanted to please everyone else. I usually dislike girls without a backbone, especially when it seemed that to do anything she needed Tegan's encouraging. But Annabel evolved during the book. She began to lose weight to fit in but in the end she did it just for herself. She learned to stand up for what she wants, with or without Tegan. I love seeing my characters develop and Nyrae Dawn did a great job with Annabel.
Tegan
Tegan is an overachiever. He has some problems at home and he tries to make up for his dad's mistake by doing everything right. He really was a great guy, considerate, funny, dependable. It was one of the "had to grow up fast" situations. He isn't perfect but he is close. He just forgot that sometimes you need to look after yourself as well as other people.
They really worked well together and helped each other be a better person.
The side characters were nice and well written. Nothing that jumps out since the main focus is the couple. Annabel's mom could probably give you frostbite just by opening her mouth and Timmy was adorable.
I can't say enough good things about Measuring Up. I'm a huge fan of Nyrae Dawn's writing anyway but I think she's really tapped into something with this book.
All women (& probably men too) live with insecurities about their bodies or some aspect of their life. In Annabel's case it's her weight. Nyrae writes about her struggles with humor and honesty.
Annabele Conway has to deal with her mom's unrealistic expectations and harsh judgments, her best friend's well meaning sabotaging behavior and her own reluctance to believe that a good looking guy could ever like a girl that looks like her.
As for Tegan, Annabel's love interest & trainer, he's a bit broken (as all swoon worthy boys are) but he is really amazing and a good motivator for Annabel. He doesn't pull any punches and makes her see that her body is more than just a number or specific weight goal. He also teaches her to be self reliant. He takes a few missteps with her but that just adds to the story because it makes Annabel stand on her own. The boy may help the girl but it's Annabel who saves herself. There are great life lessons delivered with compelling story telling.
I would love to add a few of my favorite quotes but that would basically include the entire first chapter that almost had me spraying water out my nose. It's hysterical and will have you loving and relating to Annabel right away. But please be sure not to pass over the dedication which is simply beautiful and poignant.
Measuring Up is soooo sweet, funny, swoony and empowering. It's one of my favorite contemporary YA's that I've read this year. I highly recommend it.
This was a story about a real girl named Anabell. She was so relatable. It was a story not just about her weightloss, but finding and accepting herself. I just have to say, Nyrae Dawn sure knows how to write boys... Tegan was great... I know he was not perfect but he was close. The message of the book is one everyone should hear: you have to love and accept you first and foremost. Relationships should be about loving someone and wanting to be with someone not needing them. A sweet, positive and inspiring story!
As a fellow chubby girl, I really wanted to love this story. I did. The writing was pretty clean. I liked the leading man--I just didn't like the protagonist. She bothered me for some reason. She just assumed so many things and I couldn't figure out what the lead liked about her. She wasn't very personable, she seemed kind of bumbling, she wasn't exactly that witty, and she had horrible mood swings. I didn't get the appeal. It made the story feel like someone's day dream instead of contemporary young adult fiction. I think I had a lot of high hopes for this story because all too often the female lead is perfect and beautiful and that just isn't reality but this seemed just as much a work of fiction.
And I want to make this clear, it isn't because the lead is chubby that I didn't buy it. It was because I thought she had a sucky personality and I just didn't get why the hot guy she just met would be so enamored with her when she had crazy, whiplash mood swings and just seemed generally not that likable.
I don't know--I will admit I'm probably being hyper critical because I really wanted to had a heroine I could relate to physically--that just did not happen.
Okay I'm just going to bust out and say it. Nyrae Dawn is a Goddess. Every book of hers is a masterpiece. I thought nothing could be as good as Freeing Carter, but this is. A wonderful book about learning to love yourself, learning who you are, and learning to tune out all the voices telling you that you are not enough. Just an amazing book, a one sitting wonder you cannot put down.
This woman is going to be a household name, it is absurd she is not already.
Once again, Nyrae Dawn has crafted beautiful, well fleshed out, believable characters that you CARE about and are aching for and cheering for the entire book. This is a gorgeous, important book. Well done, Nyrae!
After reading the awesomeness that is and I decided to give this a go. I was not disappointed!
This is a YA Romance, but it is has hidden meanings. Ie- your beautiful the way your are. Friendship. Family etc.
Annabel Conway is rich. She goes to a private school. Trouble is, she only has one friend and is picked on at school as she is not a size 2. She decides over the summer to change that and joins a gym on the other side of town so no-one will see her.
She is not expecting to meet Tegan. Her trainer at the gym just happens to be a HOT boy her age. HE HAS TO KNOW HER MEASURMENTS!
Tegan soon turns into her friend as well as trainer. They soon start to fall for each other. It truly is beautiful. The first touch, first kiss, when he calls her his girl *sigh* and of course when they have sex. *sigh*
Of course it wouldn’t be a fiction novel without its ups and downs. So they are in there too. All in all I really did like this book. If you are a YA Fan give it a go. You won’t regret it.
My ONE problem with this book was Annabel’s Mum.
Oh and Tegan calls her Annabel Lee. He says it is from an Edgar Allen Poe poem. I had never heard of it so I googled it.
It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of ANNABEL LEE; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea; But we loved with a love that was more than love- I and my Annabel Lee; With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsman came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in heaven, Went envying her and me- Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we- Of many far wiser than we- And neither the angels in heaven above, Nor the demons down under the sea, Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride, In the sepulchre there by the sea, In her tomb by the sounding sea.
Okay....so I read this book in 1 day. I couldn't put it down. I truly enjoyed this book, I think it is because I can relate to Annabel. I have always struggled with my weight and the friction between her and her mom I could totally connect with. I had my troubles with my mom, but I always knew she loved me, I felt so bad for Annabel for not ever really knowing if your mom loves her. I thought Annabel and Tegan's love story was great. It blossomed over time and it gave us readers time to appreciate their connection. I have to admit I was upset that they had to go thrum some pain to figure out that they didn't need each other but actually wanted each other. You will need to read the story to truly understand what I am saying.
Overall I would recommend this book. I thought it was very thought provoking. I also love a book that can make feel many different emotions. I giggled, I got mad, I got sad, I even cried a little, but I also felt the love. I have to say Ms. Dawn truly knows how to write a story that people can connect with. This is one I will definitely read again.
I loved that this book covered some “weighty issues, bullying, first loves and parental issues. The creativity of it set it apart from other YA Romances I have read lately. I really loved that the handsome young trainer, Tegan, didn’t wait until Annabel was “skinny before starting to fall for her. Not everything is about outward appearance and this book proved that!
My heart broke for Annabel; she was treated horribly at school because of her weight issues and when she was home her mom wasn’t any better when the subject of Annabel’s weight came up. Annabel is fed up after an incident on the last day of junior year and decides to spend her summer losing weight. I would say she initially starts out trying to please others but then begins to do it for herself; it is then that she truly succeeds. Annabel lacks some confidence and has never been kissed. She is kind and sees beyond the outward appearance of others and that is what makes the fact that she was bullied even worse.
Tegan is cute and in shape and happens to be assigned to train Annabel at the gym. He genuinely cares that Annabel succeeds and quickly begins to see her for what is in the inside rather than the outside. Annabel is different from other girls and Tegan has a hard time realizing that not everything she does has an ulterior motive. It doesn’t help that he has a chip on his shoulder and feels an overwhelming responsibility to take care of his family. How can a young man balance it all?
Tegan and Annabel’s working relationship evolves into a friendship and then more at a nice realistic pace. It was realistic and sweet but not without a few challenges. Annabel must learn she is worthy of a boy like Tegan’s love and Tegan must learn that he doesn’t have to pay for others issues and mistakes his whole life. They both have to learn to let go and follow their hearts.
I highly recommend this for anyone who likes a multi-layered YA Romance! I couldn’t wait to see if Annabel accomplished her goals, if she silenced her bullies and moved on past her insecurities and if Tegan would realize the weight of the world wasn’t meant to be carried on his shoulders!
I've only read one book by Nyrae Dawn and although I didn't love it, I didn't hate it either. I liked it enough to be curious about her other offerings and what else she can bring to the table.
So...I read this book, and...
...This book rocks!!
There's no other way to put it really. I absolutely LOVED it! One book, one day, loved, loved, loved...
The story was great, the characters wonderful, and the pacing just right. I loved reading this book from Annabel's POV. She was a wonderfully funny, smart and memorable character. As someone who has battled weight-loss and continues to do so, it was enlightening to see things through her eyes, to experience her ups and downs with her, because honestly, I've been there. And her thoughts have mirrored my own on more than one occasions.
And the connection between her and Tegan was awesome! I loved their chemistry, nothing felt forced, just real and sweet. And he really was swoon-worthy at times...Made me wish he was real, and I was nineteen again, 'cause goodness knows I'd hit that..but ahem, I digress..
On the surface this book seems like a book about someone battling her weight, but it was more than just that, it was about her believing in herself, loving herself for who she is and knowing that everyone deserves love in their lives. The author dealt with the subjects of weight, bullying, first love and first heartbreak with such finesse and aplomb. She gets all the credit for not making this book too dark or depressing, but hopeful and heartwarming.
3.5 stars But Gets the 4 Star Bump For The Reminder That Not Being 17 Anymore Is Righteous!
This was a sweet, quick and funny book about 17 year old Annabel who's been told by almost everyone around her she just doesn't measure up. Hot manboy Tegan is the personal trainer who's made it his mission to help Annabel get to her happy place weight wise.
I liked that fact that Tegan was into Annabel pre-weightloss. He wanted to help her lose the weight because it was important to her, not because he thought she'd be hotter or any other typical 18 year old boy notion. In spite of Annabel's many insecurities, she was funny, smart and didn't put herself down unnecessarily.
I wish this book would've been written from a dual POV. I would've benefitted from Tegan's thoughts as he made some decisions I didn't understand. It also might've been helpful to see how Tegan saw Annabel, from the moment she walked into the gym to the sweet teenage HEA. I also wanted someone, ANYONE, to give Annabel's mom a good bitch slap. Not that he had to be the one doing the slapping, but Annabel's dad needed to take a more proactive approach to parenting instead of letting Annabel be eviscerated emotionally on a daily basis.
Measuring Up was a fun yet serious book that reminded me what it's like to be a 17 year old girl, and also why I'm entirely grateful I never have to live those teenage years again.
I liked this book - perfect summer reading. This is the story of how that little voice in our heads can build or destroy us, about our decisions and inner demons, of love and necessity believing in it, believing in humanity.
I also liked Annabell and in many ways I could connect with her. Story made me thinking about my own decisions, how would I reacted on certain events.
But most of all I liked the message of the story: We are given the tools, but what we will do with them is entirely up to us. :)))
So obviously I am a major fan of Nyrae Dawn, I swear it’s like I totally have a girl crush! One of the things I love most about her is the topics she tackles to write about. Each issue in every one of her books is something relatable. She drew me in with WABW and WABN, to totally speechless in Freeing Carter, all to build up to Measuring Up. Yes, Nyrae has a new book out! Girls you have to read it, because at one point, even if you don’t admit it, we have all been there. I knew from the moment she gave us a kissy blurb on her blog that I was going to absolutely fall in love and in sync with Annabel.
Annabel Conoway, was teased at school for her weight by everyone but her friend Em. Even her mom indirectly fit into this teasing. She finally decides to do something about it on the sly, not even her best friend knows about it. I mean that’s pretty big, us girls tell our BFFs everything, so you know it was really important for her to actually make it through. Annabel shows up at “Let’s get Physical, genius name for a gym btw Nyrae, it takes her a few times to actually make it into the gym, but in the process stumbles upon Tegan. She helps him out with his family then walks into the gym to find out the guy she called, gym boy, was her trainer.
Tegan is awesome. He has his own issues to work out, but is able to give Annabel Lee, what he calls her, the, motivation and confidence she needed to work toward her goal. Along the way they end up feeling more for each other than a normal trainer/trainee relationship and Tegan asks Annabel out on a date. I have to admit it was a totally perfect date! OH and the first kiss, fireworks! Of course other things happen but you will have to read that! Like any other love story, there has to be some twist to the story, I mean it can’t always be perfect right? Well during a break, think of it more as a growing experience, Annabel was able to realize she never needed Tegan to stand up, she could do it all on her own. At the same time, Tegan realized that he didn’t have to take care of everyone he loved.
In the end HEA! The most important thing to take from this story, well what I took, is that no matter what YOU can do anything YOU set YOUR mind to. Weight has always been an issue for me, I think this book just gave me the motivation and pep talk I needed to get my booty in gear…Now where is Tegan? Thank you Nyrae for another awesome book! I told you me and Annabel would hit it off!
Measuring Up touched my heart. It’s gut wrenching, along with inspirational, hopeful, and sweet. Annabel has been torn down by others (especially her mom!) because of something as trivial as her weight. Why some people feel the need to belittle and humiliate others is beyond me. Her confidence level is nonexistent. Her motivation for change, however, is about to get a boost.
Annabel joins a gym and signs up for a personal trainer. In walks the devastatingly gorgeous, Tegan. Judging by his hotness, she assumes he’ll be just like the jerks at school. Boy, is she wrong, and pleasantly surprised. Tegan believes in her, encourages her, and challenges her like no one ever has before. He’s pretty closed off when it comes to his personal life, but little by little, Annabel gets glimpses of the real Tegan. This guy has a heart of gold and the responsibilities of a grown man. They’re both wounded for different reasons and only time will tell if they’ll be able to heal.
Annabel’s mom, wow, I have no words. That woman needs a serious reality check. I was tempted to throw my nook across the room because of her heinous comments to HER OWN DAUGHTER. You’re probably thinking, it’s a book, but there are most definitely parents out there who do the same things (and worse) to their children. I don’t care what anyone says, WORDS HURT.
I REALLY LOVE this book. It just made me feel good, when it wasn’t making me mad or cry, that is. But Annabel’s strength, mixed with Tegan’s determination, motivates me to be stronger when it comes to fighting my personal battles. Having faith in ourselves is imperative for our own happiness.
I really like this book because it's a light read and I also enjoyed all the characters! But what really made me to want to read this is because of the cover! Haha! The guy in the cover is a hottie, I couldn't stop myself staring. Haha! Anyway, this book is such a breather to me, after reading a roller coaster one. I'm glad I finally decided to read it, since it has been in my ebook shelf for a long time! I like the cute characters, especially Annabel Lee and Teagan. Wait, I have to admit that I didn't read the summary before reading it, so I didn't know that this is about a fat girl and his hot instructor. It reminds me of a movie here in our country, though the situation is reverse, the guy was the fat one.
I enjoyed knowing all the characters. Even though Annabel Lee has a lot of insecurities, she actually redeemed herself because she's determined to lose weight and totally changed her life. I understand her of course, because I thought I was a little fat during grade school, and right now because I've been eating a lot! Haha! No one wants to get bullied so I totally understand her. Teagan, on the other hand, is such a charmer, he's conceited in a funny way, and he's a hottie too. He's an instructor, duh. Haha! I like Annabel's father because he's so supportive and understanding. And I also like Teagan's mom and brother, they're both cool. And I have this mixed feelings about Annabel's bestfriend and mother, I think they don't understand her at all. Her mom doesn't listen to her. And she doesn't know her too.
Anyway, I definitely enjoyed this one, and it's a really good read. So if you want a light book, you have to pick this one . ;)
This book is so cute and lovely. I'm so glad I gave it a shot.
I don't know if it's just me... but I really felt as if the characters were real. There were lots of insecurities, drama and past issues and still... this one kept me entertained with its light humor and fun convo's. I LOVE IT. Both characters were lovable. Even with their own personal issues, I sure grew to love Tegan and Annabel. Tegan is a VERY VERY VERY VERY responsible young man while Annabel is a VERY VERY VERY insecure girl. They were sooo cute with their trainer-trainee relationship and they were even CUTTTEEERR as a couple. I love their pseudo-fight scenes and their hot encounters. I also love Tegan's mom and brother. They made this book sweeter. I have never set foot inside a gym so I really don't know much about it. This author made me visualize the things that go on in there. It was as if I was watching a chick flick with so much depth.
I wish that more YA's are like this. Teens should read more fiction like this. It made me stop and think. If the aim of this novel is to make a person believe more in herself / himself no matter what... then MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Bravo Nyrae, a book that not only could I not wait to finish, but one that reminds those that read, that well 1) all have struggles 2)skinny doesn't mean beautiful 3)the most powerful thing you can do for yourself is believe and depend on YOURSELF 4)Love is unconditional and forgiving and blind. Like I said in my progress update, this book immediately caught my attention and held me to the characters. I understood Annabel and her struggles and have been there done that... course for me I didn't get the hot trainer at the gym haha. The story was pure, true and heartfelt. Nyrae has a great way of easy writing that lets you ready and absorb and relate to the characters. Can't wait to read another of her works.
P.S would LOVE to here more about Annabelle and Tegan!!!
Once again, I have to say Nyrae Dawn did it!. This was such a beautiful story, with a great message for everyone. What I loved the most is that it shows that in order to love someone, you have to love yourself first. No one will make you feel good if you are not ok within your own skin. I loved that both main characters throughout the book grew, and accepted each other for what they are, and not for how they look. Looks dissapear with the years, and what's real is what is inside you.
As I ussually say when I finish one of her books, I'll continue reading more of Nyrae Dawn.
I really enjoyed this book! Sure it was a little cheesy, sappy but it in a good way. I thought it was a really sweet story and I loved the characters. One of the best female protags I've read in YA contemporary in a long time, she was just incredibly likeable. And Tegan? Wow, major book boyfriend material-love him. I fell for the whole thing-hook, line and sinker and bookmarked the hell out of it! Yes, there were some editing issues and some of the writing didn't flow quite right but in this case I was able to overlook it all and just enjoy the ride.
loved this! I really felt for Annabel and I recognize so much..I have great parents but I was teased in school not for being overweight thou but for being to small..my best friend was unusually tall and with me unusually short and thin we where an easy target so I know Annabel's and Em's feeling all to well and Nyrae Dawn have written it just right..

Before I even got to the actual book, the dedication page captured my heart. Truer words were never spoken.
Annabel. I couldn't help but love Annabel. How many of us (especially woman) haven't hated something about ourselves, especially in high school. Whether it was our weight or our height. Our looks, our clothes, what we drove, where we lived, maybe even our family. Being a teenager is a tough time, especially with peer pressure and all the insecurities that come with just being young and trying to find your place in the world.
My heart really went out to her and for her and really for anyone that has ever been in her place before. Her self esteem was pretty much nonexistant and I just wanted to give her a great big hug and tell her she was so much more than outside appearances. And then, I hate to say it, but then, I wanted to smack her mother. What kind of mother does and says those things to their child? Sadly, I know it happens. Every. Single. Day. And that is just heartbreaking.
Annabel's voice felt so real. I loved her sarcasm, her innocence and her goodness too. And I loved that she was strong, even when she didn't think she was, she was.
Her Dad, gah, I think I love that man! He was just awesome and I was so thankful that she had him as her father. He was everything a father should be to his little girl.
Can I talk about Tegan now? I seriously loved him, more so than I have in a long time with a male protagonist. There were the obvious reasons to like him of course, how good he was, his kindness, how hard he worked for his family, his goodness and yes, the hottness factor too but there were other things too, little things that just added up and made him a really great character.
This was such an inspirational story about being true to oneself, having faith and believing that anything is possible and not letting others opinions about us, define who we are.
This is a story with characters that I will be thinking about long after I have set the book down, long after their story is over.
It is going to be really hard picking something up next and not wanting to compare the two and not missing Annabel and Tegan and all their greatness.
4.5 Brief Summary: Annabelle has decided to finally tackle her weight issues by joining a gym and getting a personal trainer. She didn't expect her trainer to be her age, flirty, and kind of wonderful, though. As he challenges her misconceptions and, wonderfully, she challenges his, they fall for one another.
Review: I really enjoyed this one, and in fact, finished it in one sitting. The characters, the pacing, the romance, and even the themes, were all great.
Annabelle's insecurities about cocky/good looking boys were easily relatable, and my heart bled for her each time she was confronted with her mother's insensitivity. Ms. Dawn drives home an important point in the end about mothers and daughters. Sometimes two people may never be able to see eye to eye. I was so happy, though, that Annabelle learned the lesson that even though she may always want her mother's love, she doesn't need her approval to find happiness. I LOVED that when things didn't go her way with Tegan, she didn't wallow in self-doubt or self-pity. Instead, she grew from their separation and valued herself in the process.
As for Tegan, I admired him for his faith and I understood his need to be the perfect substitute for his father. Again, Ms. Dawn makes an important point. None of us are perfect, and we can't be there for other people unless we are there for ourselves first. We also need trust the people we love.
So, overall, this was an great read. I wish more couples could be like Annabelle and Tegan, really seeing/valuing one another for their inner-selves, not just falling for how hot the package is.
Recommendation: For people who want a light, but also heartfelt romance between two slightly insecure people who mature and improve just from knowing one another. The only reason I didn't give this a 5 is because I firmly believe that it needed chapters from Tegan's POV and a kick ass epilogue that would make me swoon! Mature YA

I was really excited to start this book because of all the good reviews I’ve read about it. ”Measuring Up is a well written story detailing emotions that a lot of girls go through all the while the reader get to be on a romance ride. I really felt it was refreshing to read about a character that actually has to watch what she eats. I have never been lucky enough to just eat whatever I want and it seems like the majority of characters have that dream metabolism. Now, that metabolism really does exist, my best friend and co-blogger Amanda is beautiful and doesn’t have to watch her diet and she is open about being blessed ( she understands how many women would love to have that going on & I love that about her). Being honest, it is still really cool to get to hear a voice that has similar issues to mine. It was so hard in high school to have to be so careful about what I ate around friends that didn’t. I adored Annabel beyond her eating issues, I liked her sarcasm and the way she learned to have to love her-self . The relationship between her and her family was SO FRUSTRATING, I wanted to tell her mom off and tell her dad to get a clue! Now, lets talk about Tegan ! At first, I hard time with his name because one of my good friends daughter is named Teagan. The spelling kept bugging me and I kept picturing a 3 year old toddler. awkward. But, as the book moved on I was so into the story and really got to know his charter that he really was TEGAN, 100% man. I loved the way their relationship with clear with insecurities that are involved in young relationship. Their story felt real and it was a great example of what can happen when you fight through insecurities. I absolutely recommend this book!
