Will’s hands came up and gently pressed against her back. “Easy now, mo cridhe. He rubbed soothing circles against her back. “You’re safe now. I’ve got you.
He eased her under the sheets and then tucked her blankets around her. Then he straightened.
Don’t go. She caught his fingertips in mute appeal.
Will hesitated. “It ain’t seemly. And I’m wet—
“I’m so cold, she whispered. “And you’re so warm. Please.
“Me shirt’s drenched.
“Then take it off.
Something dark and merciless flashed through his gaze. He sucked in a deep breath. Golden eyes burned in the dark of the night.
“Please, she whispered. “Just for a moment. Just to warm my sheets. If she shivered a little more than was strictly necessary Well, he would never need to know that.
If I dance with you again, we’re going to attract attention.
“We already have.
Lena considered the room. “I need to dance with someone else, she replied. The light strains of music were starting up again, this time a more traditional dance. A waltz, he suspected.
He grabbed her wrist. “Not the assah.
“N?
“N.
That dance was his.
His intentions stole her breath. He meant to kiss her. In the foyer of the Ivory Tower, in front of anyone who walked down the stairs. Exhilaration leaped through every nerve in her body.
“Don’t you dare,”she whispered.
He paused, his mouth an inch from hers. “I never understand you.”His eyes darkened with heat. “Yes or no, Lena?
Warm breath against her lips. Her hand softened on his chest. She knew the answer before her traitorous mouth could say the words. And so did he.
Will captured the yes on her lips, his hands cupping her face and tilting it up to him. The first taste of him was intoxicating. Lena clutched his lapels and rose on her toes.
He stroked her face tenderly. Lena cupped his hand against her face. Mo cridhe.
Incomprehensible words she could remember him whispering to her in the fever, amongst others. “What does that mean?
“Little one. He smiled, but the tension lingered in his bronze-warmed eyes.
“I don’t think it means that at all.
“Ain’t you hungry?
“Mmm. She kissed at his mouth, licked it. “Yes, I am.
Hands hovered at her sides. Fingers stiff, half reaching for her. “Lena, damn it. You weren’t well.
“Anyone would think you a skittish bride on her wedding night. A smoky laugh , her voice lowering. “Now that you can’t hurt me, think of all the things you could do to me.
His gaze darkened. “You’ve just recovered from a fever.
“I feel wonderful. She bit his lower lip, sucking it into her mouth. “I feel better than wonderful. She laughed, dug her nails into his chest. “I feel like I could do some very wicked things to you, right now.
Will was the most dangerous man he'd ever met, but his protective instincts overrode his violent ones. A wolf to his core.YAY! This PNR steampunk world Bec McMaster has created is so addictive; I'm loving it!
He owed Blade the world, but a part of him chafed at the constrictiveness of his life, something hungry and yearning lurked inside his heart and he didn't know what it was or how to fix it.Lena, who's always lived in her older sister's shadow, is also searching for her place in the world.
For all her hatred of the Echelon, she'd conformed to their rules. She'd let them define who she was. What she thought. What she dared to do. Her very own cage.I loved how the author was able to draw parallels between these two very different characters, a 'violent' verwulfen and a human debutante. And the way they were brought together, amid a fast-moving plot that was full of PNR goodness...
He glanced away in order to hide his eyes from the newcomers and give himself a chance to leash the beast inside him. It rode close to the surface of his skin today....romance...
Every emotion, every hope, dream, and despair she thought she'd kept hidden from him was betrayed by her scent.... and humor...
Will shot her a dark look. "I ain't gonna mince around like one of them puff-shirted vultures."...made for some fabulously entertaining reading.
