Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late

Rate this book
Our to make math a fun part of kids' everyday lives. We all know it's wonderful to read bedtime stories to kids, but what about doing math? Many generations of Americans are uncomfortable with math and numbers, and too often we hear the phrase, "I'm just not good at math!" For decades, this attitude has trickled down from parents to their kids, and we now have a culture that finds math dry, intimidating, and just not cool. Bedtime Math wants to change all that. Inside this book, families will find fun, mischief-making math problems to tackle―math that isn't just kid-friendly, but actually kid-appealing. With over 100 math riddles on topics from jalapeños and submarines to roller coasters and flamingos, this book bursts with math that looks nothing like school. And with three different levels of challenge (wee ones, little kids, and big kids), there's something for everyone. We can make numbers fun, and change the world, one Bedtime Math puzzle at a time.

„Математик за лека нощ? Е, вярно, доста от нас сигурно са заспивали от скука в часовете по математика, но чак пък да я използват вместо приказка преди лягане... Обаче май се оказва, че дори и това е възможно! Но трябва да започнем днешното ревю с остра критика заглавието на поредицата на Лора Овърдек и издателство „Софтпрес е доста подвеждащо! Книжките „Математик за лека нощ е всичко друго, но не и приспивни! Прочетете ревюто на "Книжни Криле":

This was an instant hit with my children and me. Because what do you know, math really does apply to real life! This book illustrated that fact in a fun way that got my children excited about math. The story topics were fact based and presented in kid entertaining appeal and illustrations. For example, in the "Tipping the Scales" narrative (pg22-23), it compared the biggest animal on land and sea .."African elephant weighs around 8,000 pounds, a blue whale weighs about 160 tons. A ton is 2,000 pounds, so that's over 300,000 pounds... Not that the difference matters much: If you had both animals as pets, you wouldn't want either one to sit on you" and you'll find a picture of an elephant sitting on a pickup truck and a huge whale too big for a human weighing scale. Moreover, after each tale came the math problems in three levels, easiest to hardest, Wee ones, Little kids, and Big kids. To give you an idea of the math problems, in this story Wee ones asked, "If an elephant weighs 8,000 pounds, an your car weighs 3,000 pounds, how much more does the elephant weigh?"; Little kids, "A ton is 2,000 pounds. If an elephant weighs 8,000 pounds, how many tons is that?; and Big kids, "If you have a pet whale that weighs 160 tons, how many 4-ton elephants would you need to math the weight of whale?". Hence, this book had chock full of fun and interesting narratives that is making our bedtime story time thrilling and I'm confident that it will do the same for you!

Amusing stories, clever illustrations, and challenging math problems. Bedtime now is even more fun and building confidence!

Oh, I asked my kids what they would rate this book from a scale of 1 to 5 and with resounding yells came, Five!; No, Eleven!; No, a Thousand! There you have it.

Oh, oh, oh, that's not the end of it! When we turned the light off, we had a wonderful surprise. The stars and moon on the cover page glowed in the dark! Oh my, the oohs, the aahs, and "cool"-s that came was priceless. Ms Overdeck thought of everything!!

My 6 year old especially loves this book. During the day, she'll sneak the book to her room and tries to solve the problems. Another priceless moment. I tell ya, I'm one happy mama. Thanks Bedtime Math!

We read this each night as part of our bedtime routine. The kids enjoyed the quick paragraph of facts and the related equations so much they often asked for more. I liked that there were 3 levels of equations. Not only could I choose a "Wee One" for my youngest, but sometimes I'd choose it for an easy win after a rough day for my "Little Kid". The answers are written in tiny upside down print in the corner for quick solutions if you need them. We have already started the next book and will circle back around to this one until the kids are tired of it or the Big Kid problems become too easy.

BEDTIME MATH: A FUN EXCUSE TO STAY UP LATE

What a brilliant idea! Instead of a regular bedtime story, why not math? My grands both LOVE math problems and we do them all the time in the car. I love that there are three levels of problems and that each level can work on its problem.

How has this not been thought of before?

Bedtime Math is a fantastic educational book. My 6 year old daughter requests this book daily. The book is filled with short stories about unique and interesting facts. Each story has leveled word problems to go along with it.

Bedtime Math is a fun book for kids with lots of interesting facts about many different sorts of things, all of which tie into mathematics. The first chapter is devoted to food. Learn interesting tidbits about popcorn, eggs squash and more. You read the info provided on the left hand side and on the right there is a math riddle to solve. There are three riddles provided for three different age groups so that kids from kindergarten through middle school can all feel challenged. The other chapters are set up the same way and include such fun topics as animals, vehicles, sports, and odd jobs. With 85 pages, this book is a great way to keep your kids entertained and keep their math skills sharp all summer long. My children learned a lot of cool new information and had a great time trying to figure out the riddles. With the cute cartoons and interactive writing, this is definitely a book that makes learning fun.

I had read good things about this book, but it ended up leaving me flat. Each page has a brief (non-fiction) story about some random thing---animals, space, whatever---on the left. And then on the right, it has three math questions, at different levels (for ‘wee ones, lLittle kids, and ‘big kids. But there’s a certain sameness to the quetsions. I mean, I guess that’s just the way that you write problems for such young kids. There’s only so many ways you can ask about adding two 1-digit numbers. Still, maybe I was expecting the background stories to be more interesting or something.

This book can be great for sending home with students. Many parents in my field placement today ask for certain books and materials to be sent home with their child in order to practice math with them. This is such a difficult thing to do since we are not provided with math workbooks and such. A teacher should keep "Bedtime Math" in the classroom because it is a fun, engaging book you can send home with a student to have their parents read to them before bed.

This started as a blog, but I am so finicky about my email inbox that I unsubscribed from the email list! I am so thrilled to have spotted this book at the library and discovered that it is part of a series. My 6 year old loves this book, and my 9 year old helps solve the toughest problems.

Well, my kids were fine with me reading it and they liked doing the math problems...but they're fine with me reading any book and my oldest (going into 2nd grade) likes math pretty well anyway. I, however, wasn't super impressed with the book.

I thought the math would be worked into the story/stories. I wouldn't even really say there are stories in the book. There's a theme, like a school bus, and then there's a short blurb on the left page with random facts about a school bus. Then on the right page, there are three math questions at different levels. My rising kindergartener could do the easiest questions and my rising 2nd grader did the medium and hard question (but he's advanced in math).

While they liked the book ok, they didn't beg for me to read it, and I got so bored reading it because there wasn't really a story that I could only handle reading five or so tops in a row. We read this book sporadically during the day. We read chapter books and other picture books at bedtime. I don't think I'll check out any of the other books in this series. I prefer to bring up real math experiences during day-to-day life. These "stories" were too manufactured. And I had no idea I had so much to say about a simple kids math/"story" book... I would give the book 2 stars. They would give it a 3 or 4, so I'm going with 3 since it is a book for kids.

This book and the other two in the series set out to provide engaging math problems for children. The idea is to make math as much a part of everyday life as the bedtime story is for fortunate children. It's a nice thing to have a group of interesting math problems all in one place. This is much neater than collecting clipping from various sources and hoping to keep track of them and make good use of them. A very clever idea! I love that each problem has a variation of 3 different levels of difficulty. I think I will try at least one book in my classroom as a resource for students who have finished their work and are looking for a challenge to fill their time. I know that my resources in this area are heavy on reading and language arts, so I welcome a mathematical diversion like this. I can't wait to see what the kids think.

I really enjoyed this book due to many reasons. First off I love how Laura included an introduction to explain what bedtime math is, but also an area to explain how to do bedtime math. Each chapter has a random series of numbers at the bottom of the pages as well. Each chapter has some wild name such as chapter one is exploding food, chapter 2 is wild pets, chapter 3 is extreme vehicles, and chapter 4 is called sports you shouldn't try at home, and this list goes on and on. I really loved how Laura included 3 different word problems on each page for different ages, there's one for "wee ones" so like beginner math, then one for little kids and lastly one for big kids. The book also has a lot of illustrations included in it as well to really grab the children's attention when reading this book.

I wanted to like this. Maybe it will be better for an older kid. But the "stories" are rather flat and sometimes nonsequiters (what if soda pop fizzing could power your car and then the car fights you to get it???). Then the questions for Wee Ones are basically the same every time - addition or subtraction within 10. I guess what I can say for it is it does embolden me to try out asking mathematical questions about the books we read (or the toys we play with) that go beyond, "How many?" But the book itself left something to be desired.

This book was super fun to read with the kids daily for a little math fun and we even googled YouTube videos on some the interesting things covered like a man pulling a bus or a man pulling an airplane with his teeth or cheese rolling!!! Some fascinating, amazing topics covered and making math fun and interesting and I felt like showing my kids the importance of math bc it is used all the time without us even realizing it!! The equations presented were a little easy most times for my 5th grader who is a math whiz but awesome for my younger ages!!

I was skeptical that this book would get my 3 year old interested in math or that you could do math at bedtime. Henry loves the book and was engaged for the most part. It instilled confidence in him, he proudly talks about learning his math. He is doing simple math problems in his head now. I did use an abacus to help illustrate the concept of addition and subtraction. Already ordered the two other books in the series.

I normally would not review a math picture story problem book but this book was so excellent that I wanted to review it here! There is a short story problem that is always super interesting. Then there are three different problems that we use during morning time that my kindergartener through 5th grader can do. I love it because it just covers everyone and everything.
We don’t do it at night but added it to our morning time for homeschool.

Bedtime Math is a great way to encourage children to develop their math skills, while also providing a fun and engaging way to wind down before bedtime. Whether you are a parent, educator, or just someone who loves math. Math allows readers to practice skills while also engaging readers. The book is set up in, multiple different levels of questions. There is practice for young readers up to level 2-3 readers.

I liked the preface for the parents about how to normalize bedtime math. I also super agree with it being important to never say "I'm not good at math."

That said, the problems didn't seem that intriguing. Maybe the best part is inspiring parents to come up with their own problems based on toys and other things in the bedroom.

I personally loved this book. Ruby thought it was fun too. She was able to do the easy problems, and I tried to help her understand and work through the next level of problems. She loved trying to challenge me to see if I could do the third (hardest) level -and of course I could. 😊 I loved encouraging her that one day sooner than later, she’ll be doing the third level as well!

My children loved this book; they thought it was hilarious learning about all the crazy facts, like cheese rolling, giant pumpkins, and rocket skateboards. I love that it conveniently had 3 math questions a page: one of each of my children! 3.5 stars

A fun change of pace from a typical bedtime book. We would do several of these each night before we read a novel. I was surprised at how much my kids look forward to them.
