Bec (The Demonata #4), Darren Shan
Bec is a book by Darren Shan in The Demonata series. It is the fourth book of the series released but it is first chronologically. The protagonist of the book is the central character Bec. It is set in Ireland around 1600 years ago. The last line of the book, "Screams in the dark," is also the first line of the book, as well as the tagline for the novel. Bec is the end of the first part of the Demonata books, where the three protagonists are introduced.

Before I give the review let me just start by saying that Darren Shan is one of my all time favourite authors and I am not a huge fan of horror, his writing, characters and plot’s just captivate me and keep me reading. I recommend all of his books. But this has to be one of my favourites in the Demonata series.
Characters: 9/10
I loved all the characters. There were evil ones and good ones; you’d think it would be as simple as that, but no. In most books, it’s black and white. “That guys the evil one, yay, you go stab him you hero! Kill that evil it!� Not here, you know Lord Loss is an evil SOB, yet here we learn he was always an ass, but that’s not the thing, Lord Loss is the one constant in all the books so far. And what can I say; him and his army of demons are just cool. Onto the main characters such as the one telling the story, I love Bec. She is just so awesome. She has to be one of the most badass heroines ever. Even though she is small and looked down upon she does not let others fight her battle. She goes in guns high ready to shoot down every demon out there. Yep, she’s not your average heroine, plus her super cool magic powers are also pretty wicked. Also, I liked the fact that her mind was not centred on the opposite sex or a boy; instead, it was centred around saving the world!
Writing: 8/10
I am a terrible judge at peoples writing, so I’ll just say what I thought of it. It was good. Like most of his other writing, it kept me interested and reading. And I liked how he described what was happening to Bec, I felt as if I was actually there.
Plot: 9.5/10
Ah the plot, I could go on forever talking about what happened in the book. SO, I decided to just sum it up into one sentence. It is 400 years ago demons are invading the world, a group of warriors (and Bec) must go on a journey to defeat them, and rid the world of the demons. Yeah, that sounds a little ridiculous. Read the goodreads blurb, it’s a lot truer and it makes a lot more sense. The plot is really good and keeps you interested, wanting to know what happens, every step of the way. The journey they go through is amazing.
Enjoy-ability: 9/10
Very enjoyable, a fun read that will keep you enjoying it throughout the entire book.

What can I say? Overall, the book is really interesting. The plot is interesting, the characters are interesting, and it even has a tinge of romance. Isn’t that what makes a good book. Because it sure made a good book for me.

Bec is a good book, different from the others, a prequel of sorts, very high in fantasy level. While the others were in more modern times and touched by our world, this one is instead high fantasy, in a desolate world not our own, one which follows different rules for the demon world.
It introduces the concept of chess in the book (kind of) or Lord Loss's beginning interest in it. Not sure how this story will tie in with the others later. It did occur to me I need to read these closer together, or else I'm going to start getting them confused. Each book so far is with different characters, order of events and time settings.
I liked the main character for this one - a child priestess with good morals and a strong outlook in battle. Their world (can't guess what it is yet) was different than ours and the demons have free reign there. The young priestess was powerful and I thought may play an important role later in the series, but after that ending, I'm guessing the importance she plays will be more indirect than direct.
As before there's a decent offering of violence and gore level for this age group, and Shan doesn't hold the punches back when it comes to displaying his creative mind and his knack for writing inventive fiction. How happy I am that this IS fiction. Don't think I could handle Lord Losses walking around...
Not sure on the jab at Christians but guess it depends on their world and how it tied together. Understandable enough as a standalone but confusing with how it ties into the other stories. I'm sure as I keep reading, all will make sense and eventually be revealed. This will be fine to read as a standalone and then continue with others in the series, although I prefer and recommend starting from book one and continuing from there.

وقتی کتاب را باز کردم و مقدمه‌ا� را خواندم، تنم لرزید و فهمیدم که احتمالا قرار است درباره این جلد خیلی غر بزنم. پس این بار هم ابتدا مشکلات کتاب را توی سر نشر و دست‌اندرکاران� کوبیده، و بعد از خنک شدن دلم، به شکلی بسیار کوتاه، نقد و بررسی‌ا� را بر این اثر فاخر (!) خواهم نوشت.
(نکته ۱: به نظر می‌رس� که نشر قدیانی برخی مشکلات این مجموعه را در چاپ جدیدشان حل کرده، و حاشیه کتاب‌ه� هم کم‌ت� و فونت متن هم کوچک‌ت� شده است. از همین رو، برای منصفانه بودن نوشته‌ام� شماره چاپ جلدی که مشغول خواندنش هستم را ذکر می‌کن�: چاپ دهم (۱۳۹۷).)

۱. صفحه ۳: "بِک" چهارمین کتاب از مجموعه "نبرد با شیاطین" است که سرمنشأ چالش‌ها� اساسی این داستان، پیشینه حضور شیاطین در دنیای ما، نفرینی که خانواده گریدی‌ه� را درگیر کرده و بسیاری از آنان را به گرگ‌نمای� و جنایت کشانده است، هم‌چنی� یکی دیگر از شخصیت‌ها� اصلی این مجموعه را معرفی می‌کن�. ماجراهای داستان بِک ۱۶۰۰ سال پیش و در دوران باستان ایرلند رخ می‌ده�. در آن زمان، هنوز بخش بزرگی از ساکنان این منطقه به مذاهب باستانی و اسطوره‌ها� کهن خود پایبند بودند و آیین‌ها� الهی، از جمله مسیحیت چندان گسترش چشم‌گیر� در میان آن‌ه� نداشت. در کتاب‌ها� بعدی این مجموعه، ارتباط میان شخصیت‌ها� اصلی داستان -گروبز گریدی، دِرویش، کرنل فِلِک، بِک و لرد لاس- آشکار می‌شو�. مقدمه‌ا� که خواندید در متن اصلی کتاب نیست، و به نظر می‌رس� که انتشارات مجبور به نوشتن آن شده، تا «ادیان غیرالهی» داخل داستان را ماست‌مال� کند و مجوز چاپ بگیرد. اما چرا جمله‌بندی‌ه� این‌قد� بد هستند؟ و چرا در نهایت به ماجرای کتاب‌ها� بعدی اشاره شده؟ چه دلیلی داشته که چنین چیزی را بگویند؟ نویسنده این مقدمه (احتمالا خود مترجم) خواسته بلند و رسا اعلام کند که باقی جلدها را هم پیش از مخاطب داستان خوانده و ازشان خبر دارد؟ یا می‌خواست� به بچه‌های� که چاپ اول را می‌خواندن� اعلام کند که: «این کتاب جلدهای دیگری هم دارد که در حال ترجمه‌شا� هستم! فراموش نکنید که آن‌ه� را هم بخرید و بخوانید!!!»؟ واقعا نمی‌فهم� و از این مقدمه حالم به هم خورد.
۲. صفحه ۵: «Mother pushes and after a long fight I slip out of her body on to a bed of blood-soaked grass.» اما در نسخه فارسی مادر به خودش فشار نمی‌آور� [چون زیر فشار سانسور دارد له میشود]، و صرفا بچه بعد از تقلایی سخت به دنیا می‌آی�.
۳. صفحه ۶: در پاورقی توضیح «درویید» لازم بود که اسم انگلیسی (Druid) هم بیاید.
۴. صفحه ۷: مرا بوسید و بعد مرا محکم به سینه‌ا� چسباند. به راحتی می‌ش� «مرا»ی دوم را حذف کرد!
۵. صفحه ۸: «I go right back to my first day here, Goll carrying me into the rath and joking about the big rat he’d found, the debate over whether I should be left to die outside with my mother or accepted as one of the clan.» ترجمه فارسی جمله‌بند� بسیار بدی دارد: یک‌راس� به سراغ اولین روز حضورم در این قلعه می‌روم� همان روزی که گال مرا داخل قلعه برد. آن روز، او درباره موش گنده‌ا� که پیدا کرده بود خوش‌مزگ� میکرد� و درباره این بحث که آیا باید مرا همان بیرون رها می‌کردن� تا همراه مادرم بمیرم یا این‌ک� به عنوان یکی از اعضای قبیله می‌پذیرفتن�. در واقع «خوش‌مزگ� میکرد� درباره جمله انتهایی هم صدق می‌کرده� اما چون وسط جمله طولانی آمده، به نظر می‌رس� که بخش دوم با پایان باز رها شده!
۶. صفحه ۱۰: «جد و آباد» غلط مصطلح است و درستش «جد و آباء» (در این‌ج� «جد و آبائم») است که معنی آن «پدران و پدربزرگان» است و به آبادی مربوط نمی‌شو�.
۷. صفحه ۱۴: نمی‌دان� چرا مترجم این‌قد� به نام‌های� که به «آ» ختم می‌شون� علاقه دارد، اما در جلدهای اول و سوم نام «Meera» را به «میرآ» برگردانده بود، و حالا هم نام «Ena» را به «این‌آ� برگردانده. به نظرم اگر اولی را میرا صدا کنیم و دومی را اینا به کسی بر نخواهد خورد!
۸. صفحه ۱۵: «Most are naked» ترجمه شده بیشترشان برهنه و نیمه‌برهنه‌ان�. احتمالا نیمه‌برهن� اضافه شده تا دل مسلمانان نشکند، ولی باز هم بعید است که نگویند: «این اروپایی‌ها� کثافت لخت‌وعو�...»
۹. صفحات ۲۸، ۲۹، ۳۰، ۳۶، ۷۸، ۷۹، ۸۵، ۱۰۵، ۱۰۶، ۱۳۰، ۱۳۲، ۱۳۹، ۲۰۱، ۳۰۴ و ۳۰۷: کلمه tuath به «چیوآ» ترجمه شده و مثلا در مورد اول این‌طو� آمده که: ... تازه‌واردان� که از دهکده مجاور به چیوآی ما آمدند... من نتوانستم بفهمم که چیوآ از کجا آمده، اما فکر می‌کن� مترجم می‌توانس� همان کلماتی را که در پاورقی این کلمه ذکر کرده (حاکم‌نشین� بخش) را به جای آن بیاورد.
۱۰. صفحه ۳۷: مترجم چنین آورده که: بیشتر مردها ریش چنان انبوهی دارند که هیچ‌وق� دهان‌شا� دیده نمی‌شو�. البته ریش ترجمه «beard» است و از این نظر صحیح است. اما «ریش و سیبیل» ترجمه بهتری بود، چون ریش وقتی بلند می‌شو� جلوی دهان را نمی‌گیر�!
۱۱. صفحه ۳۷: یک مورد سانسور هم در همین صفحه، جایی که بک درباره امکان ازدواجش توضیح میدهد� وجود دارد، که جمله‌ا� به طور کامل حذف شده: «my blood came a couple of years ago, earlier than in most girls». جمله‌ا� که درباره اولین پریود دخترها و ازدواج اجباری‌شا� پس از این اتفاق بوده حذف شده، تا یک وقت چشم و گوش بچه‌ه� به چیزهای ناجور باز نشود؛ حتی اگر دختر باشند!
۱۲. صفحه ۵۸: «Those who follow him» به «رفقای هم‌قطارش� ترجمه شده، که به نظرم ترجمه خوبی نیست. چون این افراد صرفا رفقای کانلا نیستند؛ بلکه ادایش را در می‌آورن� و پی‌رو� او هستند. همان‌طو� که در ادامه هم گفته می‌شو� که گرگ‌ه� از رفتار رئیس گله تقلید می‌کنن�.
۱۳. صفحات ۶۴، ۹۹، ۱۰۷، ۱۱۷، ۱۱۸ و ۱۱۹، ۱۹۲، ۲۲۳، ۲۳۲، ۲۴۴، ۲۷۲، ۲۷۴، ۲۷۸، ۲۷۹، ۲۸۱، ۲۸۵، ۲۹۷، ۳۰۳، ۳۱۲، ۳۱۴، ۳۱۹، ۳۳۰، ۳۴۶، ۳۴۹ (۲)، ۳۵۰، ۳۵۳، ۳۵۴، ۳۵۶ و ۳۶۰ (۲): نمی‌دان� مشکل خیلی از مترجم‌ه� یا انتشارات‌ه� با «جادو» چیست، اما به شکل عذاب‌آور� مسخره است. واقعا کلمه «جادو» چه کرمی به جان سیستم چاپ و نشر کتاب در ایران می‌انداز� که مجبورند آن را به مزخرفات دیگری را به جای ترجمه ببافند؟ ۱: تو تنها کسی هستی که ما را با دنیای فرازمینی قدرت مرتبط می‌کن�، در حالی که متن اصلی به سادگی گفته است: «you’re our only link to the ways of magic». ۲: هیچ نشانه قدرت یا سری هم در آن دیده نمی‌شو�. و منظور از «سری» همان جادو یا magic است. ۳: مسیحی‌ه� درک و توانایی‌ها� ما را ندارند «Christians don’t have our understanding and control of magic»۴: برای استفاده نکردن از یک کلمه ببینید مترجم باید چه‌طو� لقمه را بپیچاند: «Instant reaction � magic» واکنش فوری - استفاده از نیروی فرازمینی ۵: در ادامه به جای ذکر مثال‌های� از متن فقط به این اکتفا می‌کن� که از نظر ناشر «نیروی فرازمینی» یا «قدرت عظیم» در اکثر مواقع جایگزین‌های� مناسب و کوتاهی برای magic بوده‌ان�. ضمن این‌ک� «نیروی کهن» هم جایگزین «old magic» است. هم‌چنی� که در صفحه ۲۷۴، «فردی با قدرت‌ها� استثنایی» جایگزین «magician» یا «جادوگر» شده؛ و در صفحه ۲۷۹ به جای «magician» فقط «کسی» آمده. در صفحه ۲۸۱، «male magic» به «قدرت‌ها� فرازمینی مردانه» ترجمه شده.
۱۴. صفحه ۷۰: به نظرم پاورقی درباره ایزدبانو Ana کافی نیست. Ana ایزدبانوی مادر و ایزدبانوی آب و باران است که به سلامت زنان و امنیت کودکان در هنگام تولد اهمیت زیادی می‌ده�. در این‌ج� هم بک که مادرش را از دست داده، احتمالا برای همین از Ana کمک می‌خواه�. چندان مطمئن نیستم، اما حس می‌کن� بین لغت آنا در ترکی (به معنای مادر)، و نام این ایزدبانو ارتباطی وجود دارد.
۱۵. صفحه ۷۱: یک سانسور دیگر: خودش می‌گوی� که با هیچ‌کدا� از همسرانش بیشتر از یک یا دو سال زندگی نکرده است. متن اصلی: «She says she likes men but has never been able to put up with one for more than a couple of years.» در ممالک اسلامی مثل جمهوری اسلامی ایران، دوست داشتن مردها چیزی‌س� که زن‌جماع� نباید از آن بویی ببرد، و البته مرد هم نباید از دوست داشتن زن‌ه� چیزی بداند. اما اگر هم‌جنس‌گر� باشند یا به چنین چیزی رو بیاورند هم اعدام خواهند شد!
۱۶. صفحه ۷۱: در متن اصلی گال توضیح می‌ده� که هیچ‌کدا� از سه زنی که داشته را disappoint نکرده، که در ترجمه «ناراحت» آمده، اما «ناامید» ترجمه درست این واژه است.
۱۷. صفحات ۸۱ و ۱۶۱: به نظرم vein لازم نیست همه‌ج� به «سیاه‌رگ� ترجمه شود، و «رگ» خیلی اوقات کافی‌س�. در مورد دوم «veins of magical power» به سیاه‌رگ‌ها� قدرتی عظیم ترجمه شده!
۱۸. صفحات ۹۲، ۱۰۳، ۱۴۴، ۱۴۵، ۱۶۵، ۲۲۸، ۲۶۷، ۳۰۴ و ۳۵۹: بارها و بارها «خدایان» در این کتاب سانسور شده و تغییر کرده‌ان�. نمی‌دان� این بیماری چه‌طو� در نشریات تا این حد نفوذ کرده است، اما اگر خدا(یان) فرازمینی بوده‌اند� پس چرا باید به‌شا� بابت برنامه زندگی‌ا� که ارائه کرده‌ان� اعتماد کنیم؛ و اگر چنین نبوده‌ان� سانسورچی‌ه� با این گندی که می‌زنن� قصد دارند چه چیزی را مخفی نگه دارند؟ با این‌ک� در صفحه ۱۰۶ می‌فهمی� «خدایان» در باور شخصیت‌ه� واقعی هستند، و می‌توانن� به اسامی تک‌تک‌شا� قسم بخورند یا با ذکرشان نیرو بگیرند، اما نمی‌توانن� در گفته‌های‌شا� به جمع آن‌ه� ارجاع بدهند! ۱: «playground of the gods» به شکلی کاملا صحیح به زمین بازی موجودات فرازمینی ترجمه شده است، چون ما که کافر و مشرک نیستیم که در ادبیات‌ما� واژه «خدایان» معنایی داشته باشد و اجازه استفاده از آن را داشته باشیم. برای همین حتی اگر درباره تاریخ مصریان باستان هم بخواهیم صحبت کنیم، آن‌ه� یا داشتند موجودات فرازمینی را پرستش می‌کردند� یا یکتاپرست و مسلمان بوده‌ان�! ۲: «You must be a son of the gods!» تو باید یک پسر فرازمینی باشی! ۳: «Gods are in motion up there» اراده‌ها� برتر این‌ج� بالای سرمان در حرکت‌ان� ۴: «Male magic comes from the forces generated by the gods, the dead and the Demonata.» این یکی فوق‌العاد� است: نیروهای بزرگ از طرف قدرت و اراده‌ها� برتر می‌آیند،ا� جهانی دیگر و از قلمرو دموناتا که به کلی از مطلب اصلی دور است! «جادوی مردانه» نیروی بزرگ محسوب میشود� این یک‌جو� ترجمه زن‌ستیزان� از متن نسبتا مسخره کتاب، توسط خانم فرزانه کریمی نیست؟ و در ادامه: «Man wasn’t made to share the universe with gods» تبدیل شده به آدم‌ه� آفریده نشده‌ان� که از همه‌چی� دنیا سر در بیاورند و استفاده کنند. «آدم‌ها� درست است، اما خدایان و زندگی اشتراکی با آن‌ه� کجا رفتند؟ ۵: از ذکر باقی موارد خودداری می‌کن� و فقط این را به خاطر داشته باشید که «قدرت‌ها� برتر» و «اراده‌ها� برتر» جایگزین‌ها� «gods» هستند.
۱۹. صفحه ۱۰۱: به نظرم «Neit» باید در فارسی «نیت» یا «نِیت» نوشته می‌شد� نه «نت».
۲۰. صفحه ۱۰۳: با این‌ک� مترجم بارها گفته‌ها� کوتاه و تک‌کلمه‌ا� ران‌فس� را ترجمه کرده، اما وقتی به «Turnips» رسیده، نوشته «شلغم‌ه� را!» که به وضوح «را» اضافی است.
۲۱. صفحات ۱۰۷ و ۱۴۶: سانسور صحبت‌ها� ضدمسیحی! ۱: فهمیدیم که مسئله دیگری غیر از دعوت این پیروان جدید خداوندی نیز در دنیا وجود دارد. «we realised there were far greater enemies in the world than the followers of the god they call Christ» اما باید پرسید که «خداوندی» دیگر چه کوفتی است؟ پیروان خداوندی کسانی هستند که اعتقاد به امکان خدا شدن انسان یا خدا بودن او دارند، یا کلا بی‌خد� هستند و قدرت او را توهم و خیال می‌دانند� / ۲: در این‌ج� دشمنی بومی‌ه� با مسیحیان و امکان ازدست‌رفت� نابودی مسیحیان به دست جادوگران درویید به کلی سانسور شده است. احتمالا این قضیه به «برادران دینی ما» مربوط می‌شد� و برای وحدت اسلامی و پی‌رو� از حضرت رهبر انجام شده است.
۲۲. صفحه ۱۱۹: کودکان را قربانی اعتقادات‌شا� می‌کنن� حتی این‌ج� ناشر از کلمه gods پرهیز کرده، تا یک وقت به خدایان بر نخورد! حتی نمی‌شو� باورهای غلط را مطرح کرد! شاید چون جمهوری اسلامی هم برای اسلام و خدایـ[انـ]ش کودکان را قربانی کند!
۲۳. صفحه ۱۲۴: با روش‌ها� معمولی انسان نمی‌شو� با آن‌ه� جنگید «defeated by human means» که خیلی ساده باید گفته می‌ش� «روش‌ها� انسانی»!
۲۴. صفحه ۱۲۷: «pitiful undead»: موجودات مفلوکی که قدرت‌ها� فوق‌طبیع� دارند. لابد این ترجمه بد هم تقصیر انگلیس و زبان پردسیسه‌ا� است و نمی‌شد� از «نامردگان» استفاده کرد!
۲۵. صفحه ۱۴۱: تبدیل خیلی نرم «sharing my spirit with a man» به باید او را به ذهن و روحم راه بدهم.
۲۶. صفحه ۱۴۵: «spirits of the dead» تبدیل به اشباحی دیگر شده، که البته توضیحی درباره اشباح غیر از اینه� داده نشده است! «اشباح مردگان» چه مرضی داشت؟!
۲۷. صفحه ۱۶۲: ... از یک درخت یا گوزنی... «یک درخت یا یک گوزن» یا «یک درخت یا گوزن» یا «درخت یا گوزنی» چه زشتی‌ا� داشت؟
۲۸. صفحه ۱۶۶: در پیش رو یا «در پیش» یا «پیش رو»؛ همیشه که نمی‌شو� انواع ترجمه‌ه� را ترکیب کرد!
۲۹. صفحات ۲۱۸ و ۲۱۹: در عبارت آن آن‌جاس� «آن» اضافه است.
۳۰. صفحه ۲۲۴: ... این آخرین قایق باشد که... «آخرین قایقی» درست‌ت� است.
۳۱. صفحه ۲۳۵: چنگال‌های‌شا� شبیه شاخه‌ها� یک درخت است باید «شبیه شاخه‌ها� درخت هستند» می‌بو�.
۳۲. صفحات ۲۴۱ و ۲۴۲: بادی که از غرب می‌وزد� علف‌ها� انبوه، قله‌ها� آن‌ه� را به سمت شرق منحرف می‌کن�. ترجمه این جمله افتضاح است. تکه‌چسبان� «علف‌ها� انبوه» در وسط جمله به کنار، این‌ک� برای علف‌ه� «قله» جایگزین «نوک» یا «سر» شده خودش اوج حماقت است.
۳۳. صفحه ۲۶۹: همه لهجه‌های� را که تا حالا شنیده‌ا� وجود دارد به وضوح «را» اضافه است.
۳۴. صفحه ۲۷۰: ... هم از درون سرم می‌شنو� و از هر سویی... «هم» دوم کجا غیب شده؟
۳۵. صفحه ۲۸۹: واژه «changeling» به «بچه عوضی» ترجمه شده، اما شاید بهتر بود که این توضیح در پاورقی بیاید: «بچه اشتباهی یا بچه جایگزین موجودی است که وقتی کودکان انسان توسط پریان دزدیده می‌شوند� جایگزین آن‌ه� می‌شون�.»
۳۶. صفحه ۲۹۳ و ۲۹۴: در صحنه خداحافظی بک با فیکنا، متن اصلی چنین است: «throw my arms around Fiachna and kiss him fully, a kiss between a woman and a man. It’s the first time I’ve ever kissed someone this way. It will also probably be the last.» و ترجمه با سانسوری کوچک بدین شکل: ... و کنار پایش، سرم را پایین می‌انداز�. این اولین بار است که نگاهم راز دلم را فاش کرده است. چون نمی‌شو� هر کسی عاشق دیگری بود، دم مرگش او را ببوسد! این‌طور� سنگ روی سنگ بند نمی‌شو�! و در ادامه وقتی فیکنا «He touches my left cheek with cold, trembling fingers»، در ترجمه فارسی فقط مکث می‌کن�.
۳۷. صفحه ۳۲۰: «The head hangs just above the hole, limp, its neck jutting out of the rock.» مترجم این جمله را نفهمیده و به کل آن را از نسخه ترجمه حذف کرده است!
۳۸. صفحه ۳۲۷: عبارت «demon master» فقط به ارباب ترجمه شده که در ترکیب با «لردلاس» که خود «لرد» به معنی «ارباب» است، شکل احمقانه‌ا� پیدا کرده. نمی‌دان� «ارباب شیطانی» چه مشکلی داشته.
۳۹. صفحه ۳۳۲: کانلای خائن و هیولا می‌توانن� در یک صحنه پیش از مرگش لب‌ها� هم را ببوسند، اما بک و فیکنا نه. چنین تأییدیه‌ا� فقط از ارشاد کشوری برمی‌آی� که سعید طوسی در حین کلاس قرآن به بچه‌ه� تجاوز می‌کن� و ثقتی‌ه� با باجناق‌شا� در تخت کشتی برهنه می‌گیرن�!
۴۰. صفحه ۳۵۴: در عبارت درست کرده‌ام� او را می‌بینی�، فعل «می‌بینیم� در حالی ک�� فقط بک و بِرَن آن‌ج� هستند خیلی مسخره به نظر می‌رس�.
ایرادات داستان اصلی
۱. صفحه ۴۷: در ابتدای فصل «پسرک» توضیح داده می‌شو� که بک نه‌تنه� تنها کاهنه قبیله است، بلکه شاناکی (حافظ تاریخ شفاهی) آن هم هست. اما وقتی می‌خواه� با گروه نیروهای اعزامی به قبیله «ران‌فست� برود، خیلی ساده‌ت� از چیزی که باید حرفش را می‌پذیرن� و هیچ‌ک� این نکته را یادآوری نمی‌کن� که با رفتن او [و احتمالا مرگ او] تاریخ شفاهی هم از دست خواهد رفت. هرچند که ممکن است این قضیه در صورت مرگ تمام قبیله هم از بین برود، اما به نظرم لازم بود مطرح شود، وگرنه گفتن از این قضیه در ابتد��ی فصل، جز توجیهی مسخره برای نزدیک بودن این دختر به مرکز نشست قبیله با پناهندگان قبیله همسایه، آن هم وقتی که کاهنه اعظم روستا هم هست، هیچ نبوده است.
۲. صفحات ۶۷ و ۶۸: در این‌ج� گفته می‌شو� که سفر به سوی قبیله ران‌فست� که طبق اشاره خود او در سمت غرب است، با رفتن به سمت شرق آغاز می‌شو�. این توضیح ذکر می‌شو� که به خاطر از دست رفتن قایق‌ها� قبیله کان، باید به جایی بروند که رودخانه عرض کمتری دارد و بعد از آن‌ج� به سمت غرب حرکت کنند. لازم است که یک نفر روی نقشه موقعیت این رودخانه و محل اسکان قبیله و مسیر حرکت را به من نشان دهد تا بفهمم قضیه از چه قرار است، وگرنه که واقعا اشتباه افتضاحی است. نکته دیگر این‌ک� خود ران‌فس� چه‌طو� پای پیاده از این آب‌ها� عریض رودخانه گذشته و به سراغ قبیله بک آمده؟!
۳. صفحات ۹۴ و ۲۱۹: نویسنده چنین فرض کرده که شخصیت‌ه� از کروی بودن زمین آگاه‌اند� در حالی که در زمان وقوع داستان بعید است که آن‌ه� چنین چیزی را بدانند. وگرنه گالیله و دانشمندان اعصار بعدی چندان کشف خاصی هم نکرده بوده‌ان�. جالب است که ژروست به عنوان شخصی بسیار آگاه، از تخت یا گرد بودن زمین خبر ندارد، اما در ابتدای داستان گردن بودنش کاملا بدیهی به نظر می‌رسید�.
۴. صفحه ۱۱۰: وقتی شخصیت‌ه� از زمان حمله هیولاها تا به حال از قلعه خود خارج نشده بوده‌ان� و اولین بار است که جایی به این دوری می‌آیند� پس چه‌طو� می‌توانن� از هیولاهای کرم‌مانند� که خود را شبیه ریشه می‌کنن� خبر داشته باشند؟ به خصوص که این هیولاها «رهگذرهای بی‌خب� از همه‌ج� را گیر می‌اندازند� و احتمالا اگر هم کسی رفته، نتوانسته برگردد!
۵. صفحه ۱۲۵: ... شما برایم اهمیتی ندارید. هدف من، نجات این سرزمین است. اگر لازم باشد که ۱۶ -یا ۶۰ یا ۶۰۰- نفر بمیرند، خوب بگذارید بمیرند. سؤال این است که وقتی همه قبایل پراکنده آن سرزمین کم‌جمعی� هستند، با نابود شدن این بسیاری یا تمام قبایل، سرزمین نجات‌یافت� چه فایده‌ا� خواهد داشت؟ اصلا کدام دیوانه‌ا� به ژروست گواهینامه جادوگری داده بوده؟ به نظرم همان اشاره به محدودیت توانایی جادویی کافی بود!
۶. صفحه ۲۰۲: بک چه‌طو� می‌دان� که ژروست می‌خواه� از «لرد لاس» بگوید؟ شاید می‌خواست� نام یکی دیگر از ارباب‌ها� شیاطین را بیاورد که بک هنوز نمی‌شناس�. احتمالا چون خواننده پیش‌زمین� جلد ۱ را دارد و نمی‌شو� اسم دیگری وسط انداخت! ضمن این‌ک� اصلا چه‌طو� وقتی در آن زمان زندگی قبیله‌ا� وجود دارد، این شیطان را «لرد» لاس صدا میکنند�
۷. صفحه ۳۲۳: وقتی ژروست توضیح می‌ده� که همه این کارها را برای این کرده که کار برادرش برای باز کردن تونل به دموناتا و نابودی جهان را خراب کرده و جلویش را بگیرد، کانلا در پاسخ می‌گوی�: «پس دلیل خیلی شرافت‌مندانه‌ا� هم نداشتی.» که به شدت جمله احمقانه و مسخره‌ا� است و توضیح بیشتری لازم ندارد.
۸. صفحه ۳۵۵: کمی عقب‌ت� می‌خوانی� که سپر حفاظتی بک جلوی باد را نمی‌گیر� و فقط از برخورد هیولاها با آن‌ه� جلوگیری می‌کند� اما در این‌ج� بک فکر می‌کن� که اگر سپر نابود شود، باد آن‌ه� را خواهد برد!
نقد و بررسی واقعا مختصر
نوشتن این جلد نسبت به جلدهای قبلی شجاعانه‌ت� بوده، اما اشکالاتی که در داستان بود به نظرم ضعف بزرگی محسوب می‌شو�. این ضعف‌ه� یا به خاطر گم کردن زمان رخ دادن داستان توسط نویسنده پیش آمده‌ان� (مثلا در حالی که هیچ‌ک� نمی‌دان� زمین کروی است، اما شخصیت‌ه� آن را کره در نظر می‌گیرن�)، یا به خاطر این‌ک� نوشتن داستان طول کشیده و نویسنده بعضی نکات را از داستان خودش فراموش کرده و در ویرایش آن هم خوب عمل نکرده.
به اضافه کش دادن زیاد ماجرا، باعث لو رفتن بعضی بخش‌ها� داستان شده، و مثلا از اواسط داستان مطمئن خواهیم بود که کانلای عنق خائن به گروه است و یک جایی گندش در خواهد آمد، یا در نهایت ژروست به جای بک قربانی خواهد شد.
بین چهار قسمتی که تا الان خوانده‌ا� به نظرم «دزد شیطانی» از همه بهتر بوده، رتبه بعدی به «بک» می‌رسد� سومین رتبه سهم «لردلاس» است و آخرین رتبه هم بالاجبار به «فاجعه اسلاتر» تعلق دارد. (البته این رتبه‌بند� ممکن است با خواندن ادامه داستان و درک این‌ک� هر کدام از این کتاب‌ه� و چهار شخصیت «گروبز گریدی»، «کرنل فلک» و «بک» کجای ماجرا قرار میگیرند� تغییر کند.)
دوست داشتم ۳ ستاره بدهم، اما ترجمه این کتاب پر از مشکل بوده، و من بابتش حسابی حرص خوردم (و البته از لیست کردن این مشکلات حسابی لذت بردم)، و به همین خاطر ۲ ستاره را مناسب‌ت� می‌دان�.
(پیوی�: امیدوارم خود دارن شان این نظر را ببیند و از انتشارات قدیانی بابت نابودی کتابش قدردانی ویژه‌ا� به عمل بیاورد.)
(نکته ۱: به نظر می‌رس� که نشر قدیانی برخی مشکلات این مجموعه را در چاپ جدیدشان حل کرده، و حاشیه کتاب‌ه� هم کم‌ت� و فونت متن هم کوچک‌ت� شده است. از همین رو، برای منصفانه بودن نوشته‌ام� شماره چاپ جلدی که مشغول خواندنش هستم را ذکر می‌کن�: چاپ دهم (۱۳۹۷).)

۱. صفحه ۳: "بِک" چهارمین کتاب از مجموعه "نبرد با شیاطین" است که سرمنشأ چالش‌ها� اساسی این داستان، پیشینه حضور شیاطین در دنیای ما، نفرینی که خانواده گریدی‌ه� را درگیر کرده و بسیاری از آنان را به گرگ‌نمای� و جنایت کشانده است، هم‌چنی� یکی دیگر از شخصیت‌ها� اصلی این مجموعه را معرفی می‌کن�. ماجراهای داستان بِک ۱۶۰۰ سال پیش و در دوران باستان ایرلند رخ می‌ده�. در آن زمان، هنوز بخش بزرگی از ساکنان این منطقه به مذاهب باستانی و اسطوره‌ها� کهن خود پایبند بودند و آیین‌ها� الهی، از جمله مسیحیت چندان گسترش چشم‌گیر� در میان آن‌ه� نداشت. در کتاب‌ها� بعدی این مجموعه، ارتباط میان شخصیت‌ها� اصلی داستان -گروبز گریدی، دِرویش، کرنل فِلِک، بِک و لرد لاس- آشکار می‌شو�. مقدمه‌ا� که خواندید در متن اصلی کتاب نیست، و به نظر می‌رس� که انتشارات مجبور به نوشتن آن شده، تا «ادیان غیرالهی» داخل داستان را ماست‌مال� کند و مجوز چاپ بگیرد. اما چرا جمله‌بندی‌ه� این‌قد� بد هستند؟ و چرا در نهایت به ماجرای کتاب‌ها� بعدی اشاره شده؟ چه دلیلی داشته که چنین چیزی را بگویند؟ نویسنده این مقدمه (احتمالا خود مترجم) خواسته بلند و رسا اعلام کند که باقی جلدها را هم پیش از مخاطب داستان خوانده و ازشان خبر دارد؟ یا می‌خواست� به بچه‌های� که چاپ اول را می‌خواندن� اعلام کند که: «این کتاب جلدهای دیگری هم دارد که در حال ترجمه‌شا� هستم! فراموش نکنید که آن‌ه� را هم بخرید و بخوانید!!!»؟ واقعا نمی‌فهم� و از این مقدمه حالم به هم خورد.
۲. صفحه ۵: «Mother pushes and after a long fight I slip out of her body on to a bed of blood-soaked grass.» اما در نسخه فارسی مادر به خودش فشار نمی‌آور� [چون زیر فشار سانسور دارد له میشود]، و صرفا بچه بعد از تقلایی سخت به دنیا می‌آی�.
۳. صفحه ۶: در پاورقی توضیح «درویید» لازم بود که اسم انگلیسی (Druid) هم بیاید.
۴. صفحه ۷: مرا بوسید و بعد مرا محکم به سینه‌ا� چسباند. به راحتی می‌ش� «مرا»ی دوم را حذف کرد!
۵. صفحه ۸: «I go right back to my first day here, Goll carrying me into the rath and joking about the big rat he’d found, the debate over whether I should be left to die outside with my mother or accepted as one of the clan.» ترجمه فارسی جمله‌بند� بسیار بدی دارد: یک‌راس� به سراغ اولین روز حضورم در این قلعه می‌روم� همان روزی که گال مرا داخل قلعه برد. آن روز، او درباره موش گنده‌ا� که پیدا کرده بود خوش‌مزگ� میکرد� و درباره این بحث که آیا باید مرا همان بیرون رها می‌کردن� تا همراه مادرم بمیرم یا این‌ک� به عنوان یکی از اعضای قبیله می‌پذیرفتن�. در واقع «خوش‌مزگ� میکرد� درباره جمله انتهایی هم صدق می‌کرده� اما چون وسط جمله طولانی آمده، به نظر می‌رس� که بخش دوم با پایان باز رها شده!
۶. صفحه ۱۰: «جد و آباد» غلط مصطلح است و درستش «جد و آباء» (در این‌ج� «جد و آبائم») است که معنی آن «پدران و پدربزرگان» است و به آبادی مربوط نمی‌شو�.
۷. صفحه ۱۴: نمی‌دان� چرا مترجم این‌قد� به نام‌های� که به «آ» ختم می‌شون� علاقه دارد، اما در جلدهای اول و سوم نام «Meera» را به «میرآ» برگردانده بود، و حالا هم نام «Ena» را به «این‌آ� برگردانده. به نظرم اگر اولی را میرا صدا کنیم و دومی را اینا به کسی بر نخواهد خورد!
۸. صفحه ۱۵: «Most are naked» ترجمه شده بیشترشان برهنه و نیمه‌برهنه‌ان�. احتمالا نیمه‌برهن� اضافه شده تا دل مسلمانان نشکند، ولی باز هم بعید است که نگویند: «این اروپایی‌ها� کثافت لخت‌وعو�...»
۹. صفحات ۲۸، ۲۹، ۳۰، ۳۶، ۷۸، ۷۹، ۸۵، ۱۰۵، ۱۰۶، ۱۳۰، ۱۳۲، ۱۳۹، ۲۰۱، ۳۰۴ و ۳۰۷: کلمه tuath به «چیوآ» ترجمه شده و مثلا در مورد اول این‌طو� آمده که: ... تازه‌واردان� که از دهکده مجاور به چیوآی ما آمدند... من نتوانستم بفهمم که چیوآ از کجا آمده، اما فکر می‌کن� مترجم می‌توانس� همان کلماتی را که در پاورقی این کلمه ذکر کرده (حاکم‌نشین� بخش) را به جای آن بیاورد.
۱۰. صفحه ۳۷: مترجم چنین آورده که: بیشتر مردها ریش چنان انبوهی دارند که هیچ‌وق� دهان‌شا� دیده نمی‌شو�. البته ریش ترجمه «beard» است و از این نظر صحیح است. اما «ریش و سیبیل» ترجمه بهتری بود، چون ریش وقتی بلند می‌شو� جلوی دهان را نمی‌گیر�!
۱۱. صفحه ۳۷: یک مورد سانسور هم در همین صفحه، جایی که بک درباره امکان ازدواجش توضیح میدهد� وجود دارد، که جمله‌ا� به طور کامل حذف شده: «my blood came a couple of years ago, earlier than in most girls». جمله‌ا� که درباره اولین پریود دخترها و ازدواج اجباری‌شا� پس از این اتفاق بوده حذف شده، تا یک وقت چشم و گوش بچه‌ه� به چیزهای ناجور باز نشود؛ حتی اگر دختر باشند!
۱۲. صفحه ۵۸: «Those who follow him» به «رفقای هم‌قطارش� ترجمه شده، که به نظرم ترجمه خوبی نیست. چون این افراد صرفا رفقای کانلا نیستند؛ بلکه ادایش را در می‌آورن� و پی‌رو� او هستند. همان‌طو� که در ادامه هم گفته می‌شو� که گرگ‌ه� از رفتار رئیس گله تقلید می‌کنن�.
۱۳. صفحات ۶۴، ۹۹، ۱۰۷، ۱۱۷، ۱۱۸ و ۱۱۹، ۱۹۲، ۲۲۳، ۲۳۲، ۲۴۴، ۲۷۲، ۲۷۴، ۲۷۸، ۲۷۹، ۲۸۱، ۲۸۵، ۲۹۷، ۳۰۳، ۳۱۲، ۳۱۴، ۳۱۹، ۳۳۰، ۳۴۶، ۳۴۹ (۲)، ۳۵۰، ۳۵۳، ۳۵۴، ۳۵۶ و ۳۶۰ (۲): نمی‌دان� مشکل خیلی از مترجم‌ه� یا انتشارات‌ه� با «جادو» چیست، اما به شکل عذاب‌آور� مسخره است. واقعا کلمه «جادو» چه کرمی به جان سیستم چاپ و نشر کتاب در ایران می‌انداز� که مجبورند آن را به مزخرفات دیگری را به جای ترجمه ببافند؟ ۱: تو تنها کسی هستی که ما را با دنیای فرازمینی قدرت مرتبط می‌کن�، در حالی که متن اصلی به سادگی گفته است: «you’re our only link to the ways of magic». ۲: هیچ نشانه قدرت یا سری هم در آن دیده نمی‌شو�. و منظور از «سری» همان جادو یا magic است. ۳: مسیحی‌ه� درک و توانایی‌ها� ما را ندارند «Christians don’t have our understanding and control of magic»۴: برای استفاده نکردن از یک کلمه ببینید مترجم باید چه‌طو� لقمه را بپیچاند: «Instant reaction � magic» واکنش فوری - استفاده از نیروی فرازمینی ۵: در ادامه به جای ذکر مثال‌های� از متن فقط به این اکتفا می‌کن� که از نظر ناشر «نیروی فرازمینی» یا «قدرت عظیم» در اکثر مواقع جایگزین‌های� مناسب و کوتاهی برای magic بوده‌ان�. ضمن این‌ک� «نیروی کهن» هم جایگزین «old magic» است. هم‌چنی� که در صفحه ۲۷۴، «فردی با قدرت‌ها� استثنایی» جایگزین «magician» یا «جادوگر» شده؛ و در صفحه ۲۷۹ به جای «magician» فقط «کسی» آمده. در صفحه ۲۸۱، «male magic» به «قدرت‌ها� فرازمینی مردانه» ترجمه شده.
۱۴. صفحه ۷۰: به نظرم پاورقی درباره ایزدبانو Ana کافی نیست. Ana ایزدبانوی مادر و ایزدبانوی آب و باران است که به سلامت زنان و امنیت کودکان در هنگام تولد اهمیت زیادی می‌ده�. در این‌ج� هم بک که مادرش را از دست داده، احتمالا برای همین از Ana کمک می‌خواه�. چندان مطمئن نیستم، اما حس می‌کن� بین لغت آنا در ترکی (به معنای مادر)، و نام این ایزدبانو ارتباطی وجود دارد.
۱۵. صفحه ۷۱: یک سانسور دیگر: خودش می‌گوی� که با هیچ‌کدا� از همسرانش بیشتر از یک یا دو سال زندگی نکرده است. متن اصلی: «She says she likes men but has never been able to put up with one for more than a couple of years.» در ممالک اسلامی مثل جمهوری اسلامی ایران، دوست داشتن مردها چیزی‌س� که زن‌جماع� نباید از آن بویی ببرد، و البته مرد هم نباید از دوست داشتن زن‌ه� چیزی بداند. اما اگر هم‌جنس‌گر� باشند یا به چنین چیزی رو بیاورند هم اعدام خواهند شد!
۱۶. صفحه ۷۱: در متن اصلی گال توضیح می‌ده� که هیچ‌کدا� از سه زنی که داشته را disappoint نکرده، که در ترجمه «ناراحت» آمده، اما «ناامید» ترجمه درست این واژه است.
۱۷. صفحات ۸۱ و ۱۶۱: به نظرم vein لازم نیست همه‌ج� به «سیاه‌رگ� ترجمه شود، و «رگ» خیلی اوقات کافی‌س�. در مورد دوم «veins of magical power» به سیاه‌رگ‌ها� قدرتی عظیم ترجمه شده!
۱۸. صفحات ۹۲، ۱۰۳، ۱۴۴، ۱۴۵، ۱۶۵، ۲۲۸، ۲۶۷، ۳۰۴ و ۳۵۹: بارها و بارها «خدایان» در این کتاب سانسور شده و تغییر کرده‌ان�. نمی‌دان� این بیماری چه‌طو� در نشریات تا این حد نفوذ کرده است، اما اگر خدا(یان) فرازمینی بوده‌اند� پس چرا باید به‌شا� بابت برنامه زندگی‌ا� که ارائه کرده‌ان� اعتماد کنیم؛ و اگر چنین نبوده‌ان� سانسورچی‌ه� با این گندی که می‌زنن� قصد دارند چه چیزی را مخفی نگه دارند؟ با این‌ک� در صفحه ۱۰۶ می‌فهمی� «خدایان» در باور شخصیت‌ه� واقعی هستند، و می‌توانن� به اسامی تک‌تک‌شا� قسم بخورند یا با ذکرشان نیرو بگیرند، اما نمی‌توانن� در گفته‌های‌شا� به جمع آن‌ه� ارجاع بدهند! ۱: «playground of the gods» به شکلی کاملا صحیح به زمین بازی موجودات فرازمینی ترجمه شده است، چون ما که کافر و مشرک نیستیم که در ادبیات‌ما� واژه «خدایان» معنایی داشته باشد و اجازه استفاده از آن را داشته باشیم. برای همین حتی اگر درباره تاریخ مصریان باستان هم بخواهیم صحبت کنیم، آن‌ه� یا داشتند موجودات فرازمینی را پرستش می‌کردند� یا یکتاپرست و مسلمان بوده‌ان�! ۲: «You must be a son of the gods!» تو باید یک پسر فرازمینی باشی! ۳: «Gods are in motion up there» اراده‌ها� برتر این‌ج� بالای سرمان در حرکت‌ان� ۴: «Male magic comes from the forces generated by the gods, the dead and the Demonata.» این یکی فوق‌العاد� است: نیروهای بزرگ از طرف قدرت و اراده‌ها� برتر می‌آیند،ا� جهانی دیگر و از قلمرو دموناتا که به کلی از مطلب اصلی دور است! «جادوی مردانه» نیروی بزرگ محسوب میشود� این یک‌جو� ترجمه زن‌ستیزان� از متن نسبتا مسخره کتاب، توسط خانم فرزانه کریمی نیست؟ و در ادامه: «Man wasn’t made to share the universe with gods» تبدیل شده به آدم‌ه� آفریده نشده‌ان� که از همه‌چی� دنیا سر در بیاورند و استفاده کنند. «آدم‌ها� درست است، اما خدایان و زندگی اشتراکی با آن‌ه� کجا رفتند؟ ۵: از ذکر باقی موارد خودداری می‌کن� و فقط این را به خاطر داشته باشید که «قدرت‌ها� برتر» و «اراده‌ها� برتر» جایگزین‌ها� «gods» هستند.
۱۹. صفحه ۱۰۱: به نظرم «Neit» باید در فارسی «نیت» یا «نِیت» نوشته می‌شد� نه «نت».
۲۰. صفحه ۱۰۳: با این‌ک� مترجم بارها گفته‌ها� کوتاه و تک‌کلمه‌ا� ران‌فس� را ترجمه کرده، اما وقتی به «Turnips» رسیده، نوشته «شلغم‌ه� را!» که به وضوح «را» اضافی است.
۲۱. صفحات ۱۰۷ و ۱۴۶: سانسور صحبت‌ها� ضدمسیحی! ۱: فهمیدیم که مسئله دیگری غیر از دعوت این پیروان جدید خداوندی نیز در دنیا وجود دارد. «we realised there were far greater enemies in the world than the followers of the god they call Christ» اما باید پرسید که «خداوندی» دیگر چه کوفتی است؟ پیروان خداوندی کسانی هستند که اعتقاد به امکان خدا شدن انسان یا خدا بودن او دارند، یا کلا بی‌خد� هستند و قدرت او را توهم و خیال می‌دانند� / ۲: در این‌ج� دشمنی بومی‌ه� با مسیحیان و امکان ازدست‌رفت� نابودی مسیحیان به دست جادوگران درویید به کلی سانسور شده است. احتمالا این قضیه به «برادران دینی ما» مربوط می‌شد� و برای وحدت اسلامی و پی‌رو� از حضرت رهبر انجام شده است.
۲۲. صفحه ۱۱۹: کودکان را قربانی اعتقادات‌شا� می‌کنن� حتی این‌ج� ناشر از کلمه gods پرهیز کرده، تا یک وقت به خدایان بر نخورد! حتی نمی‌شو� باورهای غلط را مطرح کرد! شاید چون جمهوری اسلامی هم برای اسلام و خدایـ[انـ]ش کودکان را قربانی کند!
۲۳. صفحه ۱۲۴: با روش‌ها� معمولی انسان نمی‌شو� با آن‌ه� جنگید «defeated by human means» که خیلی ساده باید گفته می‌ش� «روش‌ها� انسانی»!
۲۴. صفحه ۱۲۷: «pitiful undead»: موجودات مفلوکی که قدرت‌ها� فوق‌طبیع� دارند. لابد این ترجمه بد هم تقصیر انگلیس و زبان پردسیسه‌ا� است و نمی‌شد� از «نامردگان» استفاده کرد!
۲۵. صفحه ۱۴۱: تبدیل خیلی نرم «sharing my spirit with a man» به باید او را به ذهن و روحم راه بدهم.
۲۶. صفحه ۱۴۵: «spirits of the dead» تبدیل به اشباحی دیگر شده، که البته توضیحی درباره اشباح غیر از اینه� داده نشده است! «اشباح مردگان» چه مرضی داشت؟!
۲۷. صفحه ۱۶۲: ... از یک درخت یا گوزنی... «یک درخت یا یک گوزن» یا «یک درخت یا گوزن» یا «درخت یا گوزنی» چه زشتی‌ا� داشت؟
۲۸. صفحه ۱۶۶: در پیش رو یا «در پیش» یا «پیش رو»؛ همیشه که نمی‌شو� انواع ترجمه‌ه� را ترکیب کرد!
۲۹. صفحات ۲۱۸ و ۲۱۹: در عبارت آن آن‌جاس� «آن» اضافه است.
۳۰. صفحه ۲۲۴: ... این آخرین قایق باشد که... «آخرین قایقی» درست‌ت� است.
۳۱. صفحه ۲۳۵: چنگال‌های‌شا� شبیه شاخه‌ها� یک درخت است باید «شبیه شاخه‌ها� درخت هستند» می‌بو�.
۳۲. صفحات ۲۴۱ و ۲۴۲: بادی که از غرب می‌وزد� علف‌ها� انبوه، قله‌ها� آن‌ه� را به سمت شرق منحرف می‌کن�. ترجمه این جمله افتضاح است. تکه‌چسبان� «علف‌ها� انبوه» در وسط جمله به کنار، این‌ک� برای علف‌ه� «قله» جایگزین «نوک» یا «سر» شده خودش اوج حماقت است.
۳۳. صفحه ۲۶۹: همه لهجه‌های� را که تا حالا شنیده‌ا� وجود دارد به وضوح «را» اضافه است.
۳۴. صفحه ۲۷۰: ... هم از درون سرم می‌شنو� و از هر سویی... «هم» دوم کجا غیب شده؟
۳۵. صفحه ۲۸۹: واژه «changeling» به «بچه عوضی» ترجمه شده، اما شاید بهتر بود که این توضیح در پاورقی بیاید: «بچه اشتباهی یا بچه جایگزین موجودی است که وقتی کودکان انسان توسط پریان دزدیده می‌شوند� جایگزین آن‌ه� می‌شون�.»
۳۶. صفحه ۲۹۳ و ۲۹۴: در صحنه خداحافظی بک با فیکنا، متن اصلی چنین است: «throw my arms around Fiachna and kiss him fully, a kiss between a woman and a man. It’s the first time I’ve ever kissed someone this way. It will also probably be the last.» و ترجمه با سانسوری کوچک بدین شکل: ... و کنار پایش، سرم را پایین می‌انداز�. این اولین بار است که نگاهم راز دلم را فاش کرده است. چون نمی‌شو� هر کسی عاشق دیگری بود، دم مرگش او را ببوسد! این‌طور� سنگ روی سنگ بند نمی‌شو�! و در ادامه وقتی فیکنا «He touches my left cheek with cold, trembling fingers»، در ترجمه فارسی فقط مکث می‌کن�.
۳۷. صفحه ۳۲۰: «The head hangs just above the hole, limp, its neck jutting out of the rock.» مترجم این جمله را نفهمیده و به کل آن را از نسخه ترجمه حذف کرده است!
۳۸. صفحه ۳۲۷: عبارت «demon master» فقط به ارباب ترجمه شده که در ترکیب با «لردلاس» که خود «لرد» به معنی «ارباب» است، شکل احمقانه‌ا� پیدا کرده. نمی‌دان� «ارباب شیطانی» چه مشکلی داشته.
۳۹. صفحه ۳۳۲: کانلای خائن و هیولا می‌توانن� در یک صحنه پیش از مرگش لب‌ها� هم را ببوسند، اما بک و فیکنا نه. چنین تأییدیه‌ا� فقط از ارشاد کشوری برمی‌آی� که سعید طوسی در حین کلاس قرآن به بچه‌ه� تجاوز می‌کن� و ثقتی‌ه� با باجناق‌شا� در تخت کشتی برهنه می‌گیرن�!
۴۰. صفحه ۳۵۴: در عبارت درست کرده‌ام� او را می‌بینی�، فعل «می‌بینیم� در حالی ک�� فقط بک و بِرَن آن‌ج� هستند خیلی مسخره به نظر می‌رس�.
ایرادات داستان اصلی
۱. صفحه ۴۷: در ابتدای فصل «پسرک» توضیح داده می‌شو� که بک نه‌تنه� تنها کاهنه قبیله است، بلکه شاناکی (حافظ تاریخ شفاهی) آن هم هست. اما وقتی می‌خواه� با گروه نیروهای اعزامی به قبیله «ران‌فست� برود، خیلی ساده‌ت� از چیزی که باید حرفش را می‌پذیرن� و هیچ‌ک� این نکته را یادآوری نمی‌کن� که با رفتن او [و احتمالا مرگ او] تاریخ شفاهی هم از دست خواهد رفت. هرچند که ممکن است این قضیه در صورت مرگ تمام قبیله هم از بین برود، اما به نظرم لازم بود مطرح شود، وگرنه گفتن از این قضیه در ابتد��ی فصل، جز توجیهی مسخره برای نزدیک بودن این دختر به مرکز نشست قبیله با پناهندگان قبیله همسایه، آن هم وقتی که کاهنه اعظم روستا هم هست، هیچ نبوده است.
۲. صفحات ۶۷ و ۶۸: در این‌ج� گفته می‌شو� که سفر به سوی قبیله ران‌فست� که طبق اشاره خود او در سمت غرب است، با رفتن به سمت شرق آغاز می‌شو�. این توضیح ذکر می‌شو� که به خاطر از دست رفتن قایق‌ها� قبیله کان، باید به جایی بروند که رودخانه عرض کمتری دارد و بعد از آن‌ج� به سمت غرب حرکت کنند. لازم است که یک نفر روی نقشه موقعیت این رودخانه و محل اسکان قبیله و مسیر حرکت را به من نشان دهد تا بفهمم قضیه از چه قرار است، وگرنه که واقعا اشتباه افتضاحی است. نکته دیگر این‌ک� خود ران‌فس� چه‌طو� پای پیاده از این آب‌ها� عریض رودخانه گذشته و به سراغ قبیله بک آمده؟!
۳. صفحات ۹۴ و ۲۱۹: نویسنده چنین فرض کرده که شخصیت‌ه� از کروی بودن زمین آگاه‌اند� در حالی که در زمان وقوع داستان بعید است که آن‌ه� چنین چیزی را بدانند. وگرنه گالیله و دانشمندان اعصار بعدی چندان کشف خاصی هم نکرده بوده‌ان�. جالب است که ژروست به عنوان شخصی بسیار آگاه، از تخت یا گرد بودن زمین خبر ندارد، اما در ابتدای داستان گردن بودنش کاملا بدیهی به نظر می‌رسید�.
۴. صفحه ۱۱۰: وقتی شخصیت‌ه� از زمان حمله هیولاها تا به حال از قلعه خود خارج نشده بوده‌ان� و اولین بار است که جایی به این دوری می‌آیند� پس چه‌طو� می‌توانن� از هیولاهای کرم‌مانند� که خود را شبیه ریشه می‌کنن� خبر داشته باشند؟ به خصوص که این هیولاها «رهگذرهای بی‌خب� از همه‌ج� را گیر می‌اندازند� و احتمالا اگر هم کسی رفته، نتوانسته برگردد!
۵. صفحه ۱۲۵: ... شما برایم اهمیتی ندارید. هدف من، نجات این سرزمین است. اگر لازم باشد که ۱۶ -یا ۶۰ یا ۶۰۰- نفر بمیرند، خوب بگذارید بمیرند. سؤال این است که وقتی همه قبایل پراکنده آن سرزمین کم‌جمعی� هستند، با نابود شدن این بسیاری یا تمام قبایل، سرزمین نجات‌یافت� چه فایده‌ا� خواهد داشت؟ اصلا کدام دیوانه‌ا� به ژروست گواهینامه جادوگری داده بوده؟ به نظرم همان اشاره به محدودیت توانایی جادویی کافی بود!
۶. صفحه ۲۰۲: بک چه‌طو� می‌دان� که ژروست می‌خواه� از «لرد لاس» بگوید؟ شاید می‌خواست� نام یکی دیگر از ارباب‌ها� شیاطین را بیاورد که بک هنوز نمی‌شناس�. احتمالا چون خواننده پیش‌زمین� جلد ۱ را دارد و نمی‌شو� اسم دیگری وسط انداخت! ضمن این‌ک� اصلا چه‌طو� وقتی در آن زمان زندگی قبیله‌ا� وجود دارد، این شیطان را «لرد» لاس صدا میکنند�
۷. صفحه ۳۲۳: وقتی ژروست توضیح می‌ده� که همه این کارها را برای این کرده که کار برادرش برای باز کردن تونل به دموناتا و نابودی جهان را خراب کرده و جلویش را بگیرد، کانلا در پاسخ می‌گوی�: «پس دلیل خیلی شرافت‌مندانه‌ا� هم نداشتی.» که به شدت جمله احمقانه و مسخره‌ا� است و توضیح بیشتری لازم ندارد.
۸. صفحه ۳۵۵: کمی عقب‌ت� می‌خوانی� که سپر حفاظتی بک جلوی باد را نمی‌گیر� و فقط از برخورد هیولاها با آن‌ه� جلوگیری می‌کند� اما در این‌ج� بک فکر می‌کن� که اگر سپر نابود شود، باد آن‌ه� را خواهد برد!
نقد و بررسی واقعا مختصر
نوشتن این جلد نسبت به جلدهای قبلی شجاعانه‌ت� بوده، اما اشکالاتی که در داستان بود به نظرم ضعف بزرگی محسوب می‌شو�. این ضعف‌ه� یا به خاطر گم کردن زمان رخ دادن داستان توسط نویسنده پیش آمده‌ان� (مثلا در حالی که هیچ‌ک� نمی‌دان� زمین کروی است، اما شخصیت‌ه� آن را کره در نظر می‌گیرن�)، یا به خاطر این‌ک� نوشتن داستان طول کشیده و نویسنده بعضی نکات را از داستان خودش فراموش کرده و در ویرایش آن هم خوب عمل نکرده.
به اضافه کش دادن زیاد ماجرا، باعث لو رفتن بعضی بخش‌ها� داستان شده، و مثلا از اواسط داستان مطمئن خواهیم بود که کانلای عنق خائن به گروه است و یک جایی گندش در خواهد آمد، یا در نهایت ژروست به جای بک قربانی خواهد شد.
بین چهار قسمتی که تا الان خوانده‌ا� به نظرم «دزد شیطانی» از همه بهتر بوده، رتبه بعدی به «بک» می‌رسد� سومین رتبه سهم «لردلاس» است و آخرین رتبه هم بالاجبار به «فاجعه اسلاتر» تعلق دارد. (البته این رتبه‌بند� ممکن است با خواندن ادامه داستان و درک این‌ک� هر کدام از این کتاب‌ه� و چهار شخصیت «گروبز گریدی»، «کرنل فلک» و «بک» کجای ماجرا قرار میگیرند� تغییر کند.)
دوست داشتم ۳ ستاره بدهم، اما ترجمه این کتاب پر از مشکل بوده، و من بابتش حسابی حرص خوردم (و البته از لیست کردن این مشکلات حسابی لذت بردم)، و به همین خاطر ۲ ستاره را مناسب‌ت� می‌دان�.

I expected more of this book to be honest. It wasn't bad, but the ending wasn't great, yet it was unexpected. It wasn't really exciting and I didn't feel enthusiasm in the language. I just felt it was so monotonic. I am not sure if it resembles the narrator or the author, but it wasn't likable. The plot was overall nice, and you could establish a character for every character in the story, if you get what I mean. That's basically all I have to this book.

Come on man. Shan is amazing at what he does. Just the right blend of horror and over-the-top. This book brings in emotion in a way you can't ignore. Also, it's here that the books begin to really hold hands and tie-in.

به نسبت سه کتاب قبلی از نظر من بهتر بود چون ضرب آهنگ خیلی تندتری داشت و بسیار شبیه یه داستان فانتزی پر تحرک تینیجری بود.

Someone pushed the REWIND button!
Its fuckin 5th Century AD or so! Old times rock!
So stuff begins with a neat biology related thingy. Then we find that we have ANOTHER major protagonist.
BEC. Meaning "The little one", Chic with awesome powers. Magic, healing and stuff. And oh! A BLOODY PERFECT MEMORY! i.e She could remember everything she heard, saw, felt or remember every guy she dated and so on...Hell! Chemistry reactions would have been helluva lot easier if she gave that lil brain to me.
So this chic is in a rath, some kind of primitive fortress kinda structure. She is an orphan. She is the village priestess. Just 14! And like all of them priestess' in those movies, she thinks that she'll lose her powers if she does THAT (yes, That). Hard when Fiachna the smith, her crush is around. There are other friends. Goll, a veteran one-eyed warrior. Ronnan and Locran, fierce twins and others.
These people are always getting attacked by Formorii(humans who have turned into demons) every night. Vicious monsters who just love humans coz humans taste great. So one fine night they decide to have a party, and attack.
The men fight, the women fight, the children fight. Casualities. A kid gets his throat ripped. His father goes in angrily and becomes Formarii's Dessert.
The formorii go away. Ordinary day.
Then one day, outta nowhere, this kid comes in. He runs like Flash. But is as brainless as you(Xp). The people christen him 'Run Fast', since thats the only thing he says.
The King of the tribe sends a group of warriors to follow the boy to wherever he wants them to go. Goll, Fiachna, Ronnan, Locran, Orna(a warrior chic), Connla(Fuckin bragger) aaand BECKY!
So they move on. Following the insane kid. They run into trouble. But the kid seems AWESOME! He helps them out. You'd love to read how.
They reach another rath. And find a druid there. Drust, the druid is more cold hearted than your freezer at its max. He wants their help though. A scene(abridged)
Our guys: Soo...we got these damn Formorii attakin our arses every nite. Dey seem ta get stronga an smarta.
Drust: Ya really think tha' its da same ol' Fomorii shit attackin ya? NO! Its nut da fomorii thi' time, its da MUTHAFOCKIN' DEMONATA!
Our guys: Ya talkin shit! Wat da fuck is the demonada?
Drust: majikal Kreechas from anotha Universe! They are Talla , Stronga an Sharpa!
Our guys: YAY! We doomed!
Drust: Nut if ya lot will come wid me an help me close da tunnel. *explains stuff about tunnels*
Our guys: We game! Lets whup sum demonic arse!
So.. The Naughty Nine set off. Drust teaches Bec new magic tricks (which does not include a hat and a rabbit). Spanking her if she does wrong (Bad Druid)
One night. They meet LOVELY LORD LOSS (Oops... Lowly)
YAY! *Cheers* Go! LORD LOSS!!! <3
And they fight. Becky somehow gets(steals) Lord Loss' strength! (Gimme back my powers, Bitch!)
Lord Loss moves away. Promising them agony, depression, pain, torment, fear...blah...blah...and death. And oh! Tommorow will be the first session.
And the next day... Death.
Will some make out in time to close the tunnel? Stop demons from crossing? With Lord loss not on their facebook friends list. Find out.
Plot: Loved the way the scenes are captured. Lots of feed for imagination. Drastic twists. Betrayals. Revelations. Gross deaths. Everything Darren Shan is good at. The ending was... A bit saddening. But I Loved it.
Characters:
Bec: Loved the character. Who wouldn't love a hot 14 year old girl blasting demons into smithereens? but the narration seemed like third-person rather than first.
Goll: One eyed Warrior. Nothing much about him, but he's wise and has an awesome spirit.
Ronnan and Locran: Awesome twins, love the way they kill demons. They face demons like demons.
Fiachna: Seems like a playboy at first, but then he proves himself as a warrior and a man with guts.
Connla: F-u-c-k-e-r from the start to the end.
Run Fast: ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT GUY! I THINK IT'S GREAT TO BE MINDLESS!
Drust: Cold. Hated him at first. But at the end, the feeling changed. He's the best guy.
LORD LOSS: OMFG! My role model(JK) How brutally he killed that woman! Bad way but He still defines the TEEN HORROR genre. He IS the demon for the job. Artery and Vein are here too!

These people are always getting attacked by Formorii(humans who have turned into demons) every night. Vicious monsters who just love humans coz humans taste great. So one fine night they decide to have a party, and attack.
The men fight, the women fight, the children fight. Casualities. A kid gets his throat ripped. His father goes in angrily and becomes Formarii's Dessert.
The formorii go away. Ordinary day.
Then one day, outta nowhere, this kid comes in. He runs like Flash. But is as brainless as you(Xp). The people christen him 'Run Fast', since thats the only thing he says.
The King of the tribe sends a group of warriors to follow the boy to wherever he wants them to go. Goll, Fiachna, Ronnan, Locran, Orna(a warrior chic), Connla(Fuckin bragger) aaand BECKY!
So they move on. Following the insane kid. They run into trouble. But the kid seems AWESOME! He helps them out. You'd love to read how.
They reach another rath. And find a druid there. Drust, the druid is more cold hearted than your freezer at its max. He wants their help though. A scene(abridged)
Our guys: Soo...we got these damn Formorii attakin our arses every nite. Dey seem ta get stronga an smarta.
Drust: Ya really think tha' its da same ol' Fomorii shit attackin ya? NO! Its nut da fomorii thi' time, its da MUTHAFOCKIN' DEMONATA!
Our guys: Ya talkin shit! Wat da fuck is the demonada?
Drust: majikal Kreechas from anotha Universe! They are Talla , Stronga an Sharpa!
Our guys: YAY! We doomed!
Drust: Nut if ya lot will come wid me an help me close da tunnel. *explains stuff about tunnels*
Our guys: We game! Lets whup sum demonic arse!
So.. The Naughty Nine set off. Drust teaches Bec new magic tricks (which does not include a hat and a rabbit). Spanking her if she does wrong (Bad Druid)
One night. They meet LOVELY LORD LOSS (Oops... Lowly)
YAY! *Cheers* Go! LORD LOSS!!! <3
And they fight. Becky somehow gets(steals) Lord Loss' strength! (Gimme back my powers, Bitch!)
Lord Loss moves away. Promising them agony, depression, pain, torment, fear...blah...blah...and death. And oh! Tommorow will be the first session.
And the next day... Death.
Will some make out in time to close the tunnel? Stop demons from crossing? With Lord loss not on their facebook friends list. Find out.
Plot: Loved the way the scenes are captured. Lots of feed for imagination. Drastic twists. Betrayals. Revelations. Gross deaths. Everything Darren Shan is good at. The ending was... A bit saddening. But I Loved it.
Characters:
Bec: Loved the character. Who wouldn't love a hot 14 year old girl blasting demons into smithereens? but the narration seemed like third-person rather than first.
Goll: One eyed Warrior. Nothing much about him, but he's wise and has an awesome spirit.
Ronnan and Locran: Awesome twins, love the way they kill demons. They face demons like demons.
Fiachna: Seems like a playboy at first, but then he proves himself as a warrior and a man with guts.
Connla: F-u-c-k-e-r from the start to the end.
Run Fast: ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT GUY! I THINK IT'S GREAT TO BE MINDLESS!
Drust: Cold. Hated him at first. But at the end, the feeling changed. He's the best guy.
LORD LOSS: OMFG! My role model(JK) How brutally he killed that woman! Bad way but He still defines the TEEN HORROR genre. He IS the demon for the job. Artery and Vein are here too!

Bec. The Little One. The one who Lord Loss has shared magic with... The book was so scary and had lots of gore! Bran was a good one :) Run Fast! :D What made me wonder was the theme of the book...Lord Loss didn't know chess then...the gods were Celtic and the year was 5th century AD....

Bec, book 4 in the Demonata series by Darren Shan is a prequel to the series as a whole. What a remarkable rewind. Shan has struck gold with this one again and he did it with both an amazing plot and with incredible characters.
I loved little Bec(her name means "little one"). She is truly a fabulous main protagonist. She is likable and easy to empathize with. Bec is grounded, caring, and loyal. All attributes that are needed to be a successful priestess. Bec is not naive and is worldly. Her character grows through out the story as do her priestess powers. She is awesome.
Shan throws in quite a few bad guys into this story. Of course front and center is Lord Loss as this is the story that shapes the Demon Master's life and character. There are also several Humans that are nearly as despicable as him. Drust is one self centered and uncaring son of a bitch. There are other bad people but I won't give away any spoilers.
What makes this book stand out?
1. Bec as our young heroine.
2. Drust for being a total asshole.
3. Bran "Run-fast".
4. Shan's magic.
5. The plot twists.
6. The very different feel to this prequel from the first three novels.
7. The violence and no punches pulled.
8. The amazing ending.
Bec is second only to Kernel as far as I am concerned. She clearly wins in the powerful mage aspect but his voice and story will be tough to beat. This is a brutal book compared with the rest.
I love this series and the Imagination and writing of Darren Shan. I am a huge fan. Bec is a remarkable prequel that works on many levels. I highly recommend this series to all that like urban fantasy that the older YA crowd would also enjoy.

Not only the awesome theme attracts my attention, the awfully drawn cover just makes you want to keep looking at that book. However, you have to read the first 3 book to actually understand the book and really get into it.
Darren Shan, did an amazingly wonderful job, preparing the readers (me) for the ultra surprising ending in this incredibly disturbing saga. He had gone above and beyond the fantasy world. Some of you might be disappointed, disgusted or whatever, but Darren sure did a good job making us hungry for the next book in the Demonata series.

My favorite book of the series so far. The ending was exciting and frustrating, and I felt so bad for Bec. She was my FAVORITE character of the book, and probably of the whole series. I'd rather follow a whole series about *her* adventures than stupid Grubbs Grady. Apparently the next book is also centered around him. Whoopee.
I enjoyed the time period and topic of the book. I loved the whole far-in-the-past-magic-reigns aspect, and how the magical creatures like fairies and giants were leaving the changing planet to die in peace, or go who-knows-where. It makes me nostologic for something I never had and nobody ever will. So the book takes place in fifth century Ireland, huh? I can dig Irland. It's pretty cool; the folktale story I picked to present in Literature this year was from Ireland. Sweetness.
Maybe I'll just read every other Demonata book to avoid Grubbs, but alas, I'm not that type of reader.

این کتاب رو در بین کتاب هایی که از دموناتا تا حالا خوندم بیشتر دوست داشتم. موضوعش خیلی قبل تر از اتفاقات کتاب های دیگه میفته و مربوط می شه به دنیایی کاملا فانتزی که در نواحی ایرلندی نشین اتفاق میفتن.
"بک" کودک و کاهنه ای مبتدی هست که مجموعه اتفاقات باعث می شه به همراه گروهی از اعضای قبیله ها برای مقابله با هیولاهایی که تناوب و کیفیت حمله هاشون به چیوآ ها افزایش پیدا کرده، قدم بذاره. ران فست و دراست رو پیدا می کنن و تمام تلاششون رو می کنن که جلوی حمله هیولاها رو بگیرن.
نسبت به کتاب های قبلی، پایان خیلی متفاوت و هیجان انگیزی داشت و یکی از نکات جالب کتاب این بود که کتاب با همون جمله ای تموم می شه که شروع شده بود.

One of my favorite books for a reason, it does an amazing job at combining fantastical elements with ancient, historical accuracies. It's so well done that you don't even need to read the previous books in the series, (although I highly recommend it) it's it's own great work.

Despite my appraisals of the first three books, I found that I couldn't get into this one. It's not that it is poorly written, it's just that it was hard for me to connect to. My primary problem was getting in touch with the characters.
Alright, so it takes place during the middle ages, back when the Christians were conquering the barbaric tribes and converting them to Christianity. Our protagonist, is a young girl named Bec who is a priestess (a mage) who has the unique gift of being able to remember everything that ever happened to her in her entire life as well as being able to absorb all the memories from others by touching them. She is a pagan who lives among one of the many barbaric tribes. Her village is under constant attack by hordes of demons. One day, outsiders arrive and warn them that an apocalypse is coming, so Bec and others band together and set out on a quest to avert it. Along the way she meets a druid (a mage) named Drust who becomes her mentor, a young autistic boy named Bran who can run at superhuman speed, and Lord Loss.
What I did like was the action sequences and the twist in the end. I did also kind of like the ancient background to it and the Lord of the Rings feel it had. Nevertheless, I found the characters to be pretty bland and uninteresting, with the exception of Lord Loss who is once again delightfully evil. My reason for disliking the characters probably stems from the fact that they are all ancient and therefore I am unable to relate to any of them.
It honestly isn't bad though and I wish that I could give it 2.5 stars but oh well. I recommend you still read it because it serves as building block to what happens next, and trust me when I say this, it is worth reading this mediocre book.

Darren Shan has a habit of creating interesting and likeable characters and then killing them off as if they were no more important than a fly on a wall. On beginning the series, the constant and horrific bloodshed of innocent people, including young children and babies, can be quite overwhelming. However as you continue the series you learn not to grow attached to characters as they will more than likely be killed off at some point in the book.
Usually this does not include the main character, so the ending of Bec surprised me greatly. It is because of this that I do not believe that we have seen the last of Bec. She was a strong-willed and determined character, which made her death all the more surprising.
The jump between perspectives in each book confuses me as to which book takes place in which order, as he seems to introduce a new character in one book and then jump back to the main character from the first book in another. I have heard that the fifth book is going back to Grubbs Grady's (from the first book) perspective. I don't mind this as his story will not go unfinished, but I hope that he does not continue to introduce new perspectives every two books because I grow very attached to the characters and never hear about them again.
I am mentally preparing myself for the next book in the series as the body count seems to get higher and higher as each book progresses. Something tells me that this won't change and the next book will be even more gruesome than the last.

I liked Bec. I did. But I was reading it kind of like get back to the main story already... so 4/5 stars.

I find reviewing the Shan books difficult because its hard to not talk spoilers. So please forgive the vagueness of my review...I don't want to spoil anything for you!
Another great book but more sadness in this one. More of a prequel it takes place around the time Christianity is developing and centers around a character named Bec, a young priestess in training that was found as an infant and raised by strangers.
The doorway to the demon world is being opened and a small group of warriors must find the way to close it. As usual Shans book is filled with blood, violence, gore but this one throws in loyalty and self-sacrifice. One of the best books so far!
I am totally hooked on this series and will be picking up Book 5 tomorrow!

I remember this one standing out to me when I was younger and I can see why. It's much more mature than the others with a great story and a fascinating setting.
It's set in, I think, roughly late Medieval Ireland and uses Middle Irish terms to complete the setting. There's a backdrop of Christian invasion which plays interestingly into the fantasy of the magical beings and demon world.
Whilst re-visiting the other books has been a bit of nostalgic fun, this book was a genuine pleasure to re-read and I think stands up still as an adult.

With this book we’re once again back to finding out the story of Grubbs.
Again Grubbs is developing as a character, although for completely different reasons to those in prior books. Another well-paced book in the series, keeping you hooked from start to end. Moreover, this one ends on a cliff-hanger being part of two books which run one after another unlike the prior books in the series which seem to jump about in time a bit (unless you have read them in chronological order).

Wow, dette er uten tvil den beste boken så langt i denne serien, og fra det jeg husker da jeg leste den som tenåring, så var det den beste av de alle sammen. Fantastisk spennende, og vanskelig å legge fra seg. Bran er en av de mest interessant karakterene av alle vi har møtt på så langt, og på slutten fikk han meg nesten til å gråte. Vi vet at han vokser opp til å bli en mektig magiker, og det er veldig interessant å møte ham som et barn! Liker at vi i denne boka får bakgrunnen for forbannelsen som ligger i Grady-familien; synes det er så kult hvordan alt henger sammen selv om alt skjer gjennom tre forskjellige synspunkter plassert i forskjellige tidsrom.

This fourth Demonata book blew my socks off because the first three books are all about modern day, while this one is a prequel that hugely impacts the modern world. Taking place centuries before the other books. A new character, Bec, is a great character and a breath of fresh air being that before this book you were angsty dudes. Really explores the magic aspect which isnt as present in the other books. Favorite in the series.

At first I was wording what kind of weird story this was and how unrelated to lord loss but helllloooooo excitement and more demons. This was so good. I am really appreciating all these background short novels about lord loss the demonata and how grubs came to be. In this book you find out where the werewolf curse came from and why and that there is no cure yet. Really great to read short sweet bloody to the point

The theme is believe in your leader. One reason is Bec was asked by a druib to help him close the portal that let the demons come through. She did not what she had to do to help him but she wanted the demons gone so she came along.
