John Nash won the 1994 Nobel Prize in economics for pioneering research published in the 1950s on a new branch of mathematics known as game theory. At the time of Nash's early work, game theory was briefly popular among some mathematicians and Cold War analysts. But it remained relatively obscure until the 1970s, when evolutionary biologists began to find it useful. In the 1980s economists began to embrace game theory. Since then game theory math has found an ever expanding repertoire of applications among a wide range of scientific disciplines.

Today neuroscientists peer into game players' brains, anthropologists play games with people from primitive cultures, biologists use games to explain the evolution of human language, and mathematicians exploit games to better understand social networks.

A common thread connecting much of this research is its relevance to the ancient quest for a science of human social behavior, or "a Code of Nature," in the spirit of the fictional science of psychohistory described in the famous Foundation novels by the late Isaac Asimov. In A Beautiful Math, acclaimed science writer Tom Siegfried describes how game theory links the life sciences, social sciences and physical sciences in a way that may bring Asimov's dream closer to reality.

It got a little boring and repetitive at the end but I am glad I have read it. What I learned from this book is that the use of game theory is very pervasive. We, as human beings, play games in any sort every day. Chess, cards, social interactions and living. In all there is a game and the strategies and solutions that we use will normally and logically be conducted in a way that we hope to receive the maximum benefit. Animals play games and in every situation they should choose the best possible decision that results in the maximum benefit for them. Molecules of a gas play games. And no matter if it鈥檚 a living or non-living object the maximum benefit will be resulted when there is a Nash Equilibrium in which all the players would have the maximum benefit. An example that shows this matter very well is game.
Game theory has many applications in economics, evolution, neuroeconomics, quantum mechanics鈥� but the search for finding one integrated theory that combines all the sciences, The Code of Nature, still continues.

When a book aims to introduce a discipline to a lay audience, one expects a certain amount of glossing to occur. However, the scholarly content of a beautiful math is so reduced and repetitive that it begins to feel patronizing. Additionally, the author tries too hard to be the clever, colloquial insider. There are repeated, distracting pop cultural references (most frequently to Isaac Asimov's Foundation series), the prose bulges with unimportant asides, and Siegfried indulges in an embarrassing amount of name-dropping (it stands to reason that he has met or talked to many of the people he discusses in this book, so it always stands out when he pauses from teaching, or trying to teach, to give an anecdote proving that he has seen and touched these people).

Siegfried's real passion is compulsively referenced, beginning with the title and appearing something like one hundred additional times in two hundred odd pages. A "code of nature" would appear to be the real object of Siegried's survey, but he fails to demonstrate anything like a cogent path of achievement or even any sort of deliberate inquiry in pursuit of such a code. All of the specialists mentioned in this book may well be looking for equations and systems to describe human behavior, but the endless application of the phrase "code of nature" strikes me as a semantic contrivance that the author just feels like applying to everything else he's talking about.

All that i gleaned from this book was a list of authors whose works I would rather experience firsthand.

A Beautiful Math was overall a pleasant reading. It keeps the presentation at a high level, so that even people who are not familiar with the subject (in fact, even people who are not into science at all) can understand the underlying mechanisms of game theory. As a scientist, I would have appreciated a more detailed discussion, but I realise that this was not the aim of the book. Unfortunately, I found the last 1/3 of the book quite boring and repetitive. It stressed through many chapters the connections between social sciences and game theory, but without ever going into the details, which was a bit frustrating. Furthermore, I think that some claims were quite a stretch, or maybe not well-motivated enough. For example, at some point it quotes a researcher in the field, who claims that the situation in which the best solution for a player is not for the entire team (and viceversa) is somehow responsible of the majority of the suffering and conflicts in the world. Maybe I would need to read the entire interview, but put like that, it seems to me like an incredible oversimplification of the extreme complexity of human wars and sufferings. It's true that it was not the author himself to make that statement, but he does support it. Shortly after, another researcher somehow argues that the quantum entanglement seems to play a role in the formation of stable sets of reproducing molecules, namely life itself. Even though the author says that there is a long way before we could be able to prove this (assuming it's true), putting this fact like that seems a big stretch.
Overall, I'm still glad I read the book, as it offered to me a gentle introduction to game theory and even the parts that I criticised offered me the opportunity to think critically about the claims in the book. I would recommend it.

Il titolo inglese di questo libro 猫 molto pi霉 comprensibile: A Beautiful Math 猫 ovviamente un gioco di parole sul titolo del film dedicato a Nash, A Beautiful Mind, e in effetti esso parla del Nobel e della teoria dei giochi. Per chi non sopporta la matematica, una buona notizia: qui non ne trover脿. Persino i concetti di base della teoria dei giochi, come la tabella di guadagno per i giochi come il dilemma del prigioniero, sono relegati in soffitta... pardon, in appendice. La cattiva notizia 猫 esattamente la stessa. Il libro 猫 molto americano: si intervistano persone, si afferma che con la teoria dei giochi ancora un po' e si potr脿 fare di tutto se non di pi霉 - il filo conduttore del libro associa la teoria dei giochi alla asimoviana psicostoria, ma alla fine non 猫 che si riesca ad avere un'idea chiara di quello di cui si sta parlando. Non si parla nemmeno pi霉 di tanto di John Nash, se per questo... Insomma, niente di che: secondo me si pu貌 vivere tranquillamente anche senza il libro. Anche la traduzione del resto ha qualche punto che chiaramente non 猫 stato rivisto da nessuno: per esempio, tradurre "heredity" come "eredit脿" quando si parla di ereditariet脿 猫 imperdonabile, ma mai quanto tradurre "decline and fall of the Roman empire" come "ascesa e caduta dell'impero Romano". Anche se non si 猫 mai letta la trilogia (esalogia? decalogia?) di Asimov, qui bastava aprire il dizionario...

What an awesome book! It explains that very often the best strategy to use is the mixed one. With the partial information, your result should be not a single answer, but a distribution of possibilities. To calculate the best result, you multiply probability of an outcome by its value. Those discoveries seem logical to me.

Because quantum computers can venture into multiple realities, they can do many calculations simultaneously, which speeds up getting the results.

The math of networks is called graph theory. Although networks are diverse, they share common features, which can be presented in mathematical way. This situation applies to chemical networks (like proteins), nerve cells in brains, or social networks (arts, economy), etc.

It would appear that there is variety of names for same disciplines, and this is still undergoing process of stabilization. There are new hybrid disciplines like: econophysics, socionomics, evolutionary economics, social cognitive neuorscience, neuroeconomics, experimental economic anthropology, sociophysics, etc.

Game theory can be used to forecast terrorist strategies (wow), mapping spread of disease, optimal vaccination, matching sick people with hospitals, etc.

An amazing book which beautifully blends numerous diverse areas into a unified narrative of game theory.

It presents a complete timeline of game theory from its past, present and future! There is discussion on how many areas evolved and how a need for a science arose which could address systemic issues instead of specific problems. Next, there are details of how the foundations of game theory itself were build mainly by von Neumann, Morgenstern and John Nash. Initially it was thought to be applicable mainly in the area of Economics, however soon it was found that these principles could be applied to a variety of fields. Next, the author highlights how diverse areas like network science, cognitive science, physics, chemistry, maths, quantum theory and many more can be connected to game theory to solve much bigger challenges. This in turn has lead to further developments in game theory as well.

The book concludes with a vision towards the future where the author believes and argues that game theory will play the prime role in coming with a Code of Nature i.e. a science which can connect all the dots and integrate the diversities of all the scientific disciplines to come out with a unified theory.

In my opinion, this book is more intriguing and exciting read, if the reader at least has some basic background knowledge of some of the areas like game theory, network science, cognitive science etc. This book gives are birds-eye view of game theory, dives deep into some of it key aspects and amazingly connects it to so many other areas! It is a must read for someone interested or working in the area of game theory!

It is evidently clear, on just reading the title and introduction, that Siegfried's only purpose to write this book was to collect the downstream trickle from Sylvia Nasar's excellent "A Beautiful Mind" and the subsequent movie. He begins by namedropping Isaac Asimov's Foundation, which apparently he loves very much indeed, and tries to tie it in with game theory, to poor effect (I like one thing, and I want to write a book about this other thing, so let me connect them together). Then he says he will attempt to show us how game theory explains the meaning of life and everything in it (paraphrasing). I didnt stick around for this bag of gas to discharge.

Mi appassiona la scrittura della scienza divulgativa, talenti comunicativi al servizio di concetti che altrimenti sarebbero per la media ostici ed impraticabili. Non fa differenza questo testo, anzi in alcuni punti sembra emulare nell'ironia il capolavoro "Storia di quasi tutto". Insomma 猫 un testo leggero e che si fa leggere, pieno di teorie bizzarre e geniali, dall'attore Kevin Bacon ispiratore inconsapevole di matematismi alle storie sbarazzine degli scienziati. Bene. Poi il testo si fa ripetitivo, pesante, ridondante ed irritante. Soprattutto per chi ha davvero creduto nelle scienze sociali; e ancora una volta, irrimediabilmente, un altro filone scientifico inutile ed arrogante sulla pretesa di studiare gli esseri umani da un punto di vista matematico quantisitico. Ma basta, non ce la si fa pi霉, lasciate gli esseri umani nella loro irrazionalit脿 ed imprevedibilit脿, e concentriamo le conquiste della teoria dei giochi per comprendere la subatomica, invece di uccidere alberi ed alberi con tante parole piene di niente. Libro simpatico per il viaggio che offre nelle nuove teorie (sempre matematiche, ovvio), ma la cui inutilit脿 si fa palese gi脿 verso la sua met脿.

So che in certi settori sembra che io sia un perdente, quindi mi considero un vincente in certe aree e un perdente in altre. Non si pu貌 pretendere di avere successo in tutti i campi: successo in famiglia, successo nel lavoro, successo negli sport, e cos矛 via. Penso che occorra prenderla con filosofia, sentirsi felici anche se non si 猫 vincitori. Io la prendo con filosofia. Voglio dire che essere soddisfatti 猫 qualcosa di diverso. (...) I have to admit that I have mixed views on this book. I'm glad I read it since the author provides some interesting and sometimes compelling information on the cross-discipline applications of game theory and some of the history and evolution of game theory (along with other areas of study).

On the negative side, the author seemed to try to connect the subject to popular and/or modern areas. I can understand his desire to make the book more approachable to a broader audience, but achieving the right balance to satisfy a broad audience is always difficult. I was looking for something a bit deeper mathematically and more narrowly focused on Nash's work.

Overall I would recommend this book to people who have an interest in mathematics, but don't expect this book to answer all questions or provide more than a good baseline to leverage as a starting point.

Libro ben costruito su un argomento poco dibattuto ma estremamente attuale per comprendere le dinamiche sottostanti la societ脿 moderna. L鈥檈sposizione di Siegfried 猫 chiara e precisa, anche se a volte la prosa risulta eccessivamente arzigogolata e un鈥檃udience poco tecnica potrebbe far fatica a comprendere la totalit脿 dei concetti. Il saggio ha comunque il pregio di lasciare quei 2/3 concetti chiave che permettono al lettore di iniziare a capire di cosa si tratta quando si parla di teoria dei giochi e quali sono le sue ripercussioni sulla vita di tutti i giorni.

I finished A Beautiful Math by Tom Siegfriend last week. Not the subject for everyone, but if you were ever interested in game theory or a code of nature, this was a very interesting read addressing both the origins and current practices and use of game theory.

Siegfried's writing was accessible and understandable to the layman (like me).

The title was a play on the biography of John Nash that became the hit movie "A Beautiful Mind". Nash won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1994 for his pioneering research published in the 1950s on game theory.

I was first exposed to game theory during political science classes in college and again at both a project management course and an executive education program. Game theory's most well known example is the "prisoner's dilemma" a zero-sum game that addresses risk and reward, but the book goes well beyond that to discuss how game theory is now being used in all fields of science, and as a result, the author contends it may be the key to a "Code of Nature" crossing all branches and disciplines.

Again, not for everyone, but if there is an interest in this field/area, it was a very well-written and informative book on the subject that was in fact enjoyable to read.
