Ever since I can remember, I've always loved developing my language and my speech. So, it's no wonder why I love Al-Jahiz. In his seminal work, The Book of Eloquence and Demonstration, Al-Jahiz focuses on the Arabic language itself. He provides one of the very first Arabic literary theories in his analysis of rhetoric, eloquence, and effectiveness of the language. He goes through poetry and speeches over the span of centuries to analyze and demonstrate how true eloquence is in the ability to transmit the most important and grand messages in the simplest way possible. I just loved reading this book. To anyone who reads Arabic, who studies the language, and/or who wishes to understand it better, this book is a must.
