First, a disclaimer: this review of Salim Barakat's "Sages of Darkness" is going to be one of the least reliable reviews I've written. I would grade my understanding of this novel at about a C-, for a number of reasons. I read it in fits and starts over the course of a year. It is packed with challenging vocabulary that soared over this Arabic student's increasingly-humbled noggin (e.g., 睾賱丕氐賷賲, gills -- though the dictionary tells me it means either epiglotti or uvulae). And perhaps most importantly, it is a novel that revels in the ambiguous and the hidden. From start to finish, the novel embodies St茅phane Mallarm茅's statement: 鈥淭o define is to kill. To suggest is to create.鈥� Furthermore, the narrative style has the tendency to branch off into anecdotes, in some cases acknowledging their provisionality 脿 la Rushdie. By injecting Arabic with Kurdish names, place names, and, I think, some Kurdish words, there is another similarity to Rushdie's injection of English with words from Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, etc. Yet another challenge is described by Stefan Meyer (see the second of the two links at the end of the review) and others, who say that Barakat employs daringly unusual metaphors and likes to push words beyond their generally-accepted connotations.

So. In terms of the setting, characters, and plot, the novel is set in a rural, Kurdish-majority region of northeastern Syria, near the city of Qamishli where the author grew up. The story begins with Mullah Binav and his family, including his wife, who is approaching her due date with their fourth child. There is an interesting scene in the beginning where the Mullah's son Kirzu has caught some starlings, and the father tells him to release them, basically because he feels they will need the good luck. They are struggling financially (I think the Mullah and most people in this area subsist on growing tobacco and other crops, or maybe Binav owns a small store or something, I forgot -- more on the tobacco thing later).

When the fourth child, Bikas, is born, we see the first signs of Barakat's brand of magical realism. Within hours Bikas has aged the equivalent of years (roughly the opposite of Oskar's situation in The Tin Drum). He is speaking, interrogating his family brusquely and advising them on business matters, demanding that his father roll him a cigarette, and intriguingly, recognizing elements of the natural world (as if he has seen them before). By noon, he's demanding that his father find him a wife. Mullah Binav is stunned by this turn of events, but he acquiesces. However, due to the unusual circumstances, the only option for marriage is Bikas' cousin Sinam, who is mentally challenged and has no marriage prospects. They are married at once and, with Bikas continuing to rapidly age as the hours tick by, evening arrives. They consummate the marriage, and in the middle of the night, the gray-haired, venerable newborn Bikas mysteriously slips out of bed and into the snowy night...

At this point, the character of Bikas disappears for quite a while, but his bizarre, miraculous story hangs over the following chapters like a specter, perplexing the family members he left in his wake. As I gather, in order to save face, they decide to hold a burial and claim that the newborn passed away. But when Mullah Binav is in the graveyard, and becomes briefly separated from the rest of the group, he encounters Bikas once more, now looking like Methuselah with a long gray beard. They have an exchange in which Bikas gives his awestruck father some kind of advice, I think pertaining to growing his crops in a different location, or something about accounting errors in the father's business logs -- I didn't really follow. Then Bikas again disappears.

Some of the most fascinating and impressionistic passages of the novel obliquely depict a sperm racing for survival in the darkness of the Fallopian tube, swimming guided by pure instinct and without a moment's rest, with a horde of other sperm on his tail. These passages are juxtaposed with the more traditional storytelling, not unlike the dual modes of narration in Grapes of Wrath (one traditional, one impressionistic). At times the novel feels like an art house by, say, Bu帽uel. The personification of the sperm (it has vague thoughts and aspirations) is one of several intriguing cases of personification in the novel. Much later, near the end, we see an olive bush personified in a way that is both endearing and mystical -- sitting in the center of the town, the bush uses each of its leaves as eyes with which to observe the community's unfolding drama. It experiences a full range of emotions, sometimes causing its leaves to tremble imperceptibly as if caught in a breeze...

A fair bit of the novel involves the illegal trafficking of tobacco across the Syrian-Turkish border, which I think is an attempt to get around tax laws imposed on the Kurds by Hafez al-Assad? But I didn't understand those parts that well, to be honest. Something others have observed about this novel is that it depicts Kurds, as well as Assyrians, Jews, and other ethnic minorities, but there is essentially no depiction of Arabs; somewhere I saw this compared to Toni Morrison's omission of white people from some of her works.

The novel also deals with the cycle of violence between two families in this community, and at one point this culminates in a gory massacre. I think this is also related to an incident in which an older man molests Sinam, the young woman who is mentally challenged. In terms of other stuff I didn't really understand, there is a man who for a time comes and works in this community (as a teacher? an auditor of some kind? I can't remember) and turns out to be outed as a communist. After his fingers are cut off as punishment (by whom? I forgot that too...), and the severed fingers take root in the soil and sprout, eventually pointing towards in the direction of the one who outed the man (I think it was a mail carrier who secretly opened some of his correspondences).

What else happens... Let's see... Kirzu, Bikas's older brother, at one point encounters Bikas, and Bikas turns into a flock of starlings and takes to the sky. Then later in the novel, Bikas and Sinam's son Bikas Jr. is born, and he can also talk from the moment he is born. Then there's a part where some mysterious strangers (the titular "sages of darkness") come looking for Bikas, and I really couldn't make heads or tails of what they want him for. There's also a part involving Avdi, who I believe is Mullah Binav's brother and Sinam's father, closing himself inside of a hut for a long time... Mmm... What else... There are some weird references to plots of land gradually expanding, and a mosque relocating itself inexplicably. There is also a lot of time devoted to these two people Hashmo and J... [forgot his name] who, as part of the aforementioned cycle of revenge, build a mud wall to seal off both ends of an alleyway in which their adversaries live. I think they cut down some kind of important tree, too, and then make ladders to reach some of the dwellings in the blocked-off section of the alley? Ugh, I didn't understand this novel too well.

In the end, there's some kind of crowd approaching the town (didn't understand what that's about either), and Kirzu, his mother, and his grandmother go out in search of Bikas (despite several years having passed). On the last page, they find him, and he leads them to somewhere or another, but it wasn't really clear where.

Yeah, so I didn't understand this too well, but there were several recurring features that fascinated me. One is the frequent descriptions of non-verbal gestures, expressions, and indications of things left unsaid. In one part (I'm paraphrasing), a women is described as raising her fingers to her cheek and pausing as if to say, "Perhaps..."

Fire, snow, lighting, and elements of nature are depicted creatively. For example, flames in a hearth are described as being like hell-hounds leaping and tumbling over one another in conflict. There's quite a few seeming motifs (e.g. starlings, chickens, Sinam's particular way of laughing, darkness, the hearth, cigarettes), but it escapes me whether are intended to represent anything obvious, or whether they're meant to remain ambiguous. To what extent does this novel speak to the oppression the Kurds have faced, their dashed hopes for an autonomous state, or Barakat's own experience of exile? Maybe after my second read, I'll have an answer...

I'm particularly intrigued by the seeming religious/spiritual connotations of a sentient bush, the possible implications of a child aging too quickly (I've heard that this bears some connections to Barakat's memoirs of his own childhood), and by the political undertones of land shifting underneath people's very feet, and the possible connections to Kurdish folklore. Somewhere, I read that Barakat's detailed treatment of this region (penned after he had been forced to flee from Syria to Lebanon and then Cyprus -- he now resides in Sweden) bears similarities to Joyce's eagle-eyed recreation of Dublin from afar.

You may find that some of what I said above really just came from these sources (especially Stefan Meyer), which is further proof that I ought to re-read this baby in order to develop my own opinions on it.

"Sages of Darkness is the story of two magical and snowy winters in the lives of some families in a small Kurdish Syrian village on the Turkish-Syrian border. Against the backdrop of the crude agricultural struggle, and the brutal life of tobacco smugglers, a child is born to Mulla Binav, on a freezing, snowy morning; a child who reaches the age of marriage by the waning of the winter day. From this day on, the village and the lives of its inhabitants take on a fantastic character. Bikas, the aging newborn, joins the violent, shadowy smugglers of the night, and the Sages of Darkness. Through the bewildered eyes of ten-year-old Kirzu, the Mullah's younger son, Barakat portrays the amazing events in the life of the beleaguered village: a grandfather confines himself to an old cupboard, while the cut fingers of a communist teacher grow in the garder, a eucalyptus tree turns into amber, scarecrows devour the cornfields, the village mosque slides away to the south, and some villagers develop gills under the ears. Then Bikas's child is born, and the time of the Sages of Darkness has come."

Meyer, in turn, refers to the novel exhibiting the "runaway nature of time and space" -- what a phrase!

If there's anything else I might for now, it's that the fundamental tension of this novel comes from its merging the traditional with the fantastic & avante-garde -- two seeming opposites. In one passage, a car's headlights are describe as being like Satan's eyes. This really reminded me of the way one of the villagers in 100 Years of Solitude described a train. So the truly bizarre thing is not magic, but technology and modern life in general. Jeez, I'm so psyched about Sages of Darkness right now. Its treatment of ghosts brought to mind the role of the ghost at Infinite Jest's end: not hokey, but understated and surrounded with sincere spiritual mystery.

...Did I make it through this review without using the term magic realism? Good, it seems that I did.

I didn't like it .. found it boring, and didn't capture me ... I thought all the time while reading it "when am I GOING TO FINISH?" that was the only thing I could remember about it .... there are lots of good sentences that are written in a very good language but I FOUND them not related to the plot which was btw so mm I dunno so far away. it was a big disappointment after all that good reviews about it.
