Strong female character who persisted, historical fiction perfect for middle and high school students. This book is a hidden gem.

1907 Slonim, Russia/Chelsea, MA. 13 year old Fagel travels to America leaving behind her mother and siblings. She misses her family terribly and instead of staying with her aunt and uncle takes as a maid. She hopes to earn more money while not being a burden to her poor aunt and uncle. The family she works for is demanding, but Fagel must fight to be allowed to attend classes. Fagel is determined to take advantage of all America has to offer while earning the money to allow her family the same opportunities.
