Let’s get this out of the way : if you're considering reading after watching MTV's TV show of the same name, just don't. The show is extremely loosely based on the book and the two don't have much in common.

I'm glad this book was a quick read for the good parts didn't outweigh the bad ones.

I'll concede it was creepy enough and I was surprised by the twists. The characters I suspected screamed "obvious" but weren't guilty. Good.

But I didn't enjoy anything else. I had never read anything by before and I wasn't impressed with the style, plot devices or characters.

The author tried hard to keep the readers on their toes with twists and dramatization but the result was over-the-top and forced.
The final twist didn't make sense to me. Lindy spent the whole book not suspecting at all but in the last pages she miraculously recalls times when things had been weird to back up the Big Reveal. How convenient.

I didn't like the characters and even found some of them useless. Namely Brill, Lindy's dad, Luisa, Rita and Saralynn. The male characters weren't charming or interesting, not even the one she ended up with.

As for Lindy, she was passive and flat. For God’s sake, she got felt up against her will twice by the same drunk guy (on two different occasions) and did absolutely nothing.
Also, we are given information about her work, her dead boyfriend or her mother's death (to flesh Lindy out I suppose) but we aren't showed how any of that impacted her.
I honestly think what she was most sensitive about were her tragic, eye-catching, model-like good looks. And, of course, Lindy is hot, tall and blonde and men can’t help but stare at her whereas her best friend is a plain Jane who needs to lose weight and had to wait until she was 24 to get a boyfriend .
The ending was hard to believe and did nothing to redeem Lindy’s characterisation. I mean, she was under tremendous psychological turmoil and almost died, but, a month after the action took place,

In a nutshell, I failed to care about the characters or what happened to them. The story was absurd. I only finished the book out of curiosity. And, no, I would not recommend this to anyone.

Okay, first of all, the television show? MUCH BETTER. Even if its just as ridiculous as the book plot. Second of all, STICK TO GOOSEBUMPS AND FEAR STREET, STINE.

This book has left me confused. It centers around Lindy, this "too gorgeous for even her to admit it" 23-year old that gets set up on a dating site by her best friend, Ann-Marie (I'll get to her later, her character as a whole is what pissed me off the most!!!!!) as someone called Eye Candy. Lindy, of course, is reluctant, because she's still getting over her ex boyfriend, some super sexy cop, who was killed in the line of duty. But her friend keeps pushing her to do it, saying she really needs to "get back out there" and find someone special.

So Lindy caves and decided to go out with three guys. All of them are quite boring in my opinion, until she happens to meet Shelly. This weird and intense dude she mistakes for one of her dates at a bar. They hit it off and exchange numbers (before her date, mind you).

And then the weird shit starts happening. Someone threatens Lindy's life. And steals all of her underwear (???) out of her drawer. The culprit says that he'll hurt Lindy if she ever says no to him, and she needs to keep seeing him. Lindy is terrified, so she enlists the help of her ex boyfriends partner, a cop named Tommy. Sigh, Tommy. So much hotness in the television show, not enough hotness in the book. Stine could have made him babelier. I mean, look at him on the show? HE IS AN ADONIS. Tommy insists that this creep is probably just a one time creep and she should just ignore the warnings and stop seeing all the guys.

.....bad move, hot cop.

I forgot to mention the random chapters that are inserted to make you think that Lindy's stalker is killing other victims. They are written as something out of a Criminal Minds episode, honestly. Written as if her stalker takes home innocent victims, bangs them, and leaves them dead for stupid reasons (messed up teeth, fingernails chewed, etc). Those confused me the most. The significance of those chapters still leaves me baffled.

Anyways, back to the Lindy story. She's thrown off of a dock, she's followed by some creepy hooded figure, and she's genuinely terrified for her life. But she keeps saying yes to these guys so she won't end up dead. The story drags on and on for about 50 more pages of the same bs, her dating all of these guys and getting threatening phone calls and being told not to say no.

Until the last few pages kicks in. She goes to Shelly's (the guy she met randomly when she mistook him for her date), and finds body parts. Everywhere. Ultimately, she panics (I mean, who wouldn't?) and runs out of the building. She calls mister hot cop, and they arrest him. PLOT TWIST: He's never even murdered anyone in his life. Just in stories. Yes, the chapters where women are getting murdered after having sex are in this dudes imagination. He's never killed anyone, he's just imagining it. This dude is batshit crazy.

That part, the part where its revealed that this Shelly guy is imagining murdering everyone he dates, and no actual murder is being involved, is where Stine lost me. I didn't even want to finish the book. But I trudged on anyways, considering I only had about 15 pages to go anyways. And finishing the book? It wasn't even worth it.

It turns out that he best friend and roommate was the one stalking her, stealing her underwear, and generally terrorizing her life. All because she though Lindy and her skeezball guido boyfriend were having a secret thing on the side, and she was jealous of it. So she basically made Lindy go through hoops because she is just as nuts as that Shelly guy.

I finished this book perplexed. I couldn't even believe the ridiculousness of that plot twist. It was even interesting. Stine should have wrote about a hot Australian dude murdering people because they have flaws and he's searching for the perfect one. That would have grabbed my attention more.

This book was so disappointing. As I said before, I started reading this because of the show. A TV show based on this book started this week on MTV and it wasn't out of the extraordinary, but it was interesting. I'm in the middle of finals and well, you know my reading habits by now. Also, I thought it was cool to read some "adult" (more like YA) books from R.L. Stine, as I remember reading and enjoying his books when I was a little girl.

My first disappointment was that this was written in 2004, thus there were no smartphones nor apps like in the show. But no worries, there was still internet and cells, so it should be fun. Then, the sister plot disappeared and the cop boyfriend was already dead and buried. That was disappointing. Lindy here wasn't a girl with a mission, seeking revenge or looking to solve a mystery that had impacted her deeply. She was just a girl with bad luck that had no idea what to do. She wasn't great with technology, or with anything at all. She excelled at complaining, that was all.

Then there were the four (six, for me) guys. Jack, Brad, Colin, Shelly, Lou and Tommy. Jack, Brad and Lou were clearly safe, and I snorted every time she worried about them because it was so damn obvious it wasn't them. Colin was obviously safe because he was her "endgame" and once she started obsessing over him being the stalker it was PLL fashion: you suspect too much, then he isn't your guy. And Shelly? It was so obvious, wasn't it? She trusted him and he was so damn weird. I have to give it to Stine, it surprised me when we discovered he was writing and not killing the girls for real. But I also suspected Tommy. I mean, the way he acted was so weird, and only the first call happened before he was there. And either he was the worst at this job or he had something to do with what was happening. The only time someone was tailing Lindy, it was him. And even then a man was able to chase her for a long while before he appeared. It was SO suspicious.

Well, for me it was clear there were two people involved because there needed to be a twist. Well, Stine aimed for two twists. The Shelly being "harmless" and just writing about killing girls, which wasn't a bad twist but kind of a disappointment. And then, who the real stalker was. I had all my egg's in Tommy's basket. Turns out, it was Ann-Marie. That was so stupid! So so so stupid! First of all, the chaser was supposed to look like a guy, and even if her description was made up, how could Brad's being so similar to hers, then? I doubt Brad would mistake a girl's body with a man's, even if it was night. There were some loose ends that annoyed me. Also, they never explained why Tommy acted so weirdly. Which he did, a fuck lot. And I'm left wondering if he was just terrible at his job because, hello? Lindy was almost killed twice under his watch, or his supposed cop protection. Maaan, so bad.

On the other hand, Lindy. Lindy was so stupid. Really stupid. Her first person point of view drove me mad. "Is it you, Colin? Are you the one?" She repeated all these questions all the time and it was lame. "And have you been crazy ever since? Or did you just decide to go berserk after your met me?" Really, Lindy? Also, the excuse of using the 9/11 here was out of place and seemed distasteful. I understand Lindy was so paranoid, it's understandable, but her internal monologue was so annoying. Also, the was suspicious of everyone and their mother, but not of Shelly and his changing weird behavior. Awesome, Lindy. And in her job, she was a disaster. She shouldn't put up with what was happening to her. You (wo)man up, complain to your boss, do your job properly and stop letting Rita be the one that shines. I swear, Lindy was the most useless, stupid person in the book.
Ann-Marie? She was the typical stereotype of the chubby insecure girl who gets herself the wrong man but is too blind to see it. Does that turn her into a psycho? I don't think so. I thought it was so incredibly idiotic and cliché-y. I mean, the chubby girl kills the amazing beautiful one because she's jealous? She plans a prank that gets out of hand? Because the ugly chubby girl is crazy and the beautiful one is the poor victim we should feel bad for. Also, the woman's the bad one. We have six freaking guys, but the pyscho bitch is the woman. How.Surprising. BTW, Stine, are you going to tell me how she faked the man's voice? Just out of curiosity.
And Luisa? I wish the book had been about her. It would have been funnier, wittier and far more interesting.

Finally, the writing. I didn't really like the writing. Lindy's parts, as I said, were annoying. Also, the way of expressing herself was boring most of the time. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary, it was very average. The "Murderer"'s parts? Meh, a little better, but still plain.

I can only hope the tv show turns out better than this. Much better. Because this was an absolute disappointment. I'm going to read another thing and hope it gets much better than this. Please.

This book was okay, it had a nice twist at the end. But I just did not like the writing. It didn't feel like I was reading a horror/thriller. The suspense was low. The show is way more interesting, and it was the reason I decided to read the book. The shows so different from the book but in a good way

Wow I have never read such a terrible R.L. Stine book. Hard to believe this one is written by him

I enjoyed his Fear Street series. They are usually less than 200 pages and a scary fun for me. Eye candy is wow 320 pages. Don't be happy about that. More pages equate more bullshits in this case.

Eye Candy is more of an adult horror. The characters are working people instead of teenagers and kids. It has more gore and creepiness. Like more gory details but still did a childish attempt scaring me.

I was mildly enjoying this in the beginning. Lindy went out with 3 guys she met from the internet and one of them is a killer

description

It was fun at first but slowly got boring. Lindy keep going on dates with these boy and there will be one or 2 accidents happened to the point that it get so repetitive you wish the story ends fast. Also, there are some parts that are totally redundant . Waste of space to fill up the 320 pages.

I am so bored near the end that I dont really care how it end

There's this really great TV show currently airing on MTV that uses this book as source material. MTV is notorious for canceling any halfway decent programming and I'm super obsessed with the show so I felt compelled to read this book. I shouldn't have read because this book is garbage.

I was always more in the Christopher Pike camp rather the R.L. Stine camp. I'm sure I've read at least one Goosebumps books. Eye Candy is the author's attempt to break free from the teen genre and write for adults but it doesn't work. The characters are all one note stereotypes.

Lindy, the main character, is the blonde bombshell that doesn't think she's pretty. Of course she lives in NYC with two roommates, a plain Jane type and the party girl. Lindy makes stupid decisions and was quite annoying.

The only reason that this book gets any stars is because of the double twist ending. I mean I knew who the killer was but to discover that he (SPOILER ALERT) kills on paper through his short stories but not in reality was a surprise. And I sorta knew that the roommate would be the real stalker because of the single white female alluded to during college flashbacks.

Life is short. There are too many books on my to read shelf and I feel I wasted 311 pages that could have been devoted to another book.

R.L. Stine is an author I have read a lot of, especially when I was younger. I read all the books from the Goosbumps and the Fear Street series. I have also read some of his stand alone books. He was the best selling author for young adult readers before being hit by J.K. Rowling. The Goosebumps series also became a TV series and movie. There has also been a trailer released for a sequel. So R.L. Stine is a man with a huge fan base, especially children, teenagers, and nostalgic adults.

I am a nostalgic adult. The Goosebumps series impressed me, not because it was scary, but it made me read a lot more. Have always enjoyed reading from the time I learned to read, but there was something about those books that made made my interest in books bigger. 'Cause that series was very entertaining and banal.

Eye Candy is about Lindy who is a bit tired of being single. She lives in New York with two other girls, and finding a normal guy to love, in this big city is anything but easy. Boys are scared of her cause she is very beautiful. One of her friends she lives with suggests that she should put an advertisement online and before she knows it, her friend has made and published an ad for her on a dating page, nicknamed her Eye Candy. She is not quite fan of the nickname, but she has nothing to lose since it's hard to find someone.

She meets different types of guys and starts dating for fun. Take it as it comes. She meets different characters, some weird ones, a few dull ones and one she likes a lot, but she us unsure whether it's her type of guy. Things get creepy in the dating process when she recieves calls and an anonymous letter of threat that she can only dare to say no to date him. The worst thing is that she does not know which of the guys she is dating has sent her these threats. An old friend of her who is a police officer promises to stand up for her in this case and advices her to be careful. He also wants her to continue dating as before, and together trying to find out who is behind the threats. In meanwhile she tries to date as usual and live a normal life. Will she be able to reveal who is behind the threats and should she take them seriously? Is it someone who is just playing games?

Stalking is an interesting and itimidating topic. Have read some thrilles about this topic, and unfortunately this is not one of the best books about the topic from the thriller genre, but rather the opposite. This was just deadly boring. Good charachter descriptions and you get to know them well, but they are genuinely stupid. R.L. Stine is one of my favorite writers, so it's a pity and a shame that I didn't like this book, and I know he's so much better than this. Therefore, it is hard to say that this book is a flop. Could not even like this main character Lindy. She seemed too selfish and I wasn't able to feel sympathy for her.

My main reason for reading this book was because of the TV show and how much I loved it. I also wanted to figure out how it would end since it was canceled. Imagine my disappointment when I find that they have almost nothing in common. I rarely say this, but the TV show was way better. The book was still interesting at some parts and it was an easy read.

Title: Eye Candy
Author: R.L. Stine
Series or Standalone: Standalone
Rating: 3 Stars ***

Review:

I’m no stranger to the writing prowess of R.L. Stine. Growing up, I sat around devouring his Fear Street series along with Goosebumps. There was one point where I was pretty sure I owned every single book in existence from these two series and loved every one of them equally. When people say that he is the young adult horror version of Stephen King, they aren’t lying. Even now, years later, not having picked up one of his books in a while, I still believe that. Everything he wrote was almost like gold to me back then.
So fast forward a whole bunch of years and I happen to come across this show on television called Eye Candy. One that I happened to get sucked into and enjoyed a great deal. Well at first I had no idea it was based on a book by the author I had grown up loving, but when I found out, it didn’t take long for me to pick up this book in an effort to see if the magic that had been there as a young child and now again as an adult with the show, could be duplicated.
It wasn’t, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The show was very loosely based on this book and honestly, I liked that aspect. I enjoyed the fact that it wasn’t a verbatim kind of thing and that the show writers and runners chose the direction they did with it because I’m not quite sure, doing it the way they did the book would have worked quite as well for me. But it feelings like two different tales entirely, only with a few small aspects similar, was actually a good thing.
For this story, you’re in the mind of the “killer and the mind of lead character Lindy and while having the dual point of views, being able to see inside multiple characters at any given time is something I normally like, I just couldn’t connect with it here. At least not all the way. The writing, for a book designed for older readers came across very juvenile, especially given Lindy supposed age within the story and I found myself enjoying the killer POV more than hers, which doesn’t entirely sit right with me because I wanted to connect with Lindy in the book the same way I had in the show (even though they differed).
The writing was all over the place at any given time, it would jump from point A to point F almost and within a couple of seconds into the change I would be moving back and forth trying to figure out if there was something I missed because it just didn’t make sense.
There were details a lot of the time that I didn’t feel I needed to know, and maybe were only there to lengthen the story even though at times the pacing did seem okay, which only added to the already rampant confusion I had while reading.
I liked the idea, the premise is actually quite good and the writing at times was good as well, but this book just didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat the way I wanted it to. There are likeable qualities to it, but it’s a story that for me, I will be content reading once and putting away and with R.L. Stine stories, I always loved being able to go back to them over and over, so for me this is a shame.
Not an absolutely horrible read, but not the best either.

Saw the first 3 episodes of the new MTV-TV-Series, and thought this might be a good read.
Well, it was not, first, the heroine is blonde model-like woman, blah, no blondes for me.
In the TV series, she is way more interesting.
And the book is from 2004, no mobile phones, only a little internet (dating site).
The TV-series ist not too obviously based on this, luckily.
What really put me off, the stile of writing, a scene and chapter ended, and the story jumped ahead, leaving things out, some to be explained later, some not, so many questions and wrong decisions open, that I did not really engage with the characters and the 1 and 1/2 twists which came near the end, I did not see coming.
Looking back on how long it took me to finish the book, I should have DNFd it near the beginning or fast read it in one day.
Wether you like the TV-Series or not, do not read this book, not recommended!

A slight bit creepy. Actually it's completely creepy of a read. The wicked things that can actually happen to a person. I have to say this is quite a different outlook on R.L Stine's end. I have never seen him do anything like this. Most of his books are for much younger folks.

I'm not really sure if this should be targeted for younger adults or not. I guess it depends on how you look at younger adults. It wasn't a horrible book but sometimes I did get lost in it (as in thinking about other books to read while I'm reading this book). In areas it was pretty interesting and intense.

I read this a few years back and I thought it was very enjoyable. Some of the characters worked, others didn't. Very dark and a nice change of pace for R.L. Stine, I first read this book when I heard about the MTV series. Like I said, I enjoyed it, some very nice creep-factor moments and Stine really captures inside the mind of a psychopath. Sometimes, the book would have a weird change of setting after we were at one specific place like a page before, and some of the reveals didn't really work out (the motive of one character). It's a very fun, sometimes thrilling, read that has some good characters, tense moments and a fun villain.

I picked this book b/c I used to love R.L. Stine. This is the first adult novel I have read of his. Eye Candy is about a girl named Lindy whose friend sets her up on an online dating site. Soon Lindy is dating 4 guys at once, but one of those she believes in a stalker and creep, as the keeps getting threatening messages "keep saying yes or else." A good read, but could of been better and more suspenseful, I guess its b/c I have already so many of Stine's books. If you are a Fear Street/R.L. Stine fan, you will like this book.

R. L. Stine has never really been a great writer to begin with, his venture into the young adult fiction was likewise unimpressive. I think the biggest problem I had with the book was with the characterization of the heroine- Lindy, she was fake as hell even from a first person point of view. Her friends were equally unlikable, to be honest, none of the characters were likable. Many of the plot-holes were present which made me annoyed and there were just so many problems with narration in itself.

He had an interesting premise but failed to realize it.

If you ever wondered if it's possible for good TV shows to be based on bad books, "Eye Candy" has the answer - and it's a definite yes. Unsympathetic characters, ridiculous plot twists, and bland, repetitive prose. If I never read about someone "pressing their face against" someone else's (Is that supposed to be sexy? threatening? creepy? All of those?), it'll be too soon. Do yourself a favor and watch the (untimely cancelled) MTV show instead. It has its flaws, but it's still heaps better than this mess.

This was pretty dire. I enjoy the Goosebumps books; Stine's style of creepy works perfectly in children's books. And I LOVE the Fear Street books; the completely logic-defying plots work for teen-in-peril stories.
But the characters in this were adults, and somehow that makes the lack of character development, common sense, or any kind of rationality harder to swallow.
It was kind of a fun read, but nothing near the sheer joy of a Fear Street book.

This was an interesting read. Ending was a a bit of a surprise. Once into it, it was hard to put down, because you wanted to know who "the one" was, but when you found out who it was, it was actually kind of anti-climatic.
Written in true Stine fashion, I recommend this book to anyone wanting a quick read of the suspense kind.

grew up reading.

I grew up reading RL Stine books. But it has been 10 years. I had to give this book a read when I saw the promo that MTV placed for the series. This book. Sucked me back to high school. I enjoyed this fast and easy read. I finished it in a few hours. How the hell well MTV get several episodes will be stretching it. Now I don't wish to watch the show.

This recently got made into a tv show on MTV, which is actually very cool. The whole cyber-stalker aspect of the story is a lot less prevalent in the book, but then again, it was written way back in 2004, so the lack of smart phones is to be expected. I like the premise of the book, but the conclusion just didn't do it for me. I hope the show works out a bit better.

I preferred the tv show. The show was too loosely based on the book to answer any questions I had remaining about the show.

I like a good twist in a book, but his execution of those twists were weak. The ending felt rushed and fell flat. You get the impression that by the time RL Stine got to the last part of the book, he was just ready to be done with the whole thing.

I have been wanting to read this book since they atttempted to make a show out of it. The show was better. I was actually going to rate it a 4 until I got towards the end. The last 1/3 of the book ruined the great quality that came before. It just got worse as it went. It had great potential to end well.
