"To this day, there is a paucity of literature about excess-birth children. If this continues, when we depart this life in the natural course of things, my generation will disappear without a trace. The passage of history smoothes over people's resentment and anger. Ten, twenty, a hundred years hence, who will remember us?"

Trigger warning: domestic abuse, emotional abuse.

What an absolutely marvellous piece of literature and soul searching from a wounded past delivered through hindsight. Shen Yang dug deep to recollect her childhood away from her family, hiding as an 'extra child' during strict-enforcement of the One Child Policy. She retells her journey and that of children with similar status to herself, shedding light on an often forgotten part of history.

I truly struggled when contemplating how to begin this review. Shen dug into her history of hiding, the institutional exclusions built into society to punish children whose only crime was to be born and the reality that money could buy silence. Where some had hukou's (local registration) to override their 'illegal' status, others were not allowed the privilege of education as punishment for their parents decisions. Whilst the book isn't an overt critique on society, it allows the reader to understand society of the time and the discrimination faced by second, third and fourth babies.

Shen managed to share her own childhood woes, happiness and shift of mindset as she met other illegal children. Interestingly, each found solace in community, regardless of the lack of change at home. Each chapter was captivating and the vocabulary and selected memories were easy to devour. I also adored the photos at the end, enabling me to add context to the previous content.

The true source of my admiration for the book came from the final chapters. Shen willingly chose to present her family through a lens other than her own lived experience and really gave context to the questionably unforgivable behaviour she endured whilst growing up. Where she used the body of her memoir to present history from her lived challenging upbringing, she presented a life jacket for those who mistreated her. Unwilling participants of the Cultural Revolution, Shen allowed the readers to understand why her caretakers had become so bitter and jaded, neither justifying nor judging their person but instead recognising that they were products of their environment. She explained how history affected her family and most impressively, how this had shaped her and she was seeking to do better to change her path.

I'm a big fan of memoirs, but truthfully, Shen is one of the first authors I've read to offer a fully rounded history of herself and the current events of the time. The Cultural Revolution is so undiscussed in western literature, as is the impact of the childhood policy and I'm in awe of her strength and decision to stand up for others who share the history of a hidden childhood.

Thank you for sharing your ARC with me Yangyang, I'm grateful.

The Heihaizi —also known as Illegal Children, Shadow Children, Ghost children, and Invisible Children among other names—are a direct and ill-fated consequence of One Child Policy implemented in China during the 1980s. The very existence of Heihaizi goes against the law. Branded guilty for being born, these children pay for the ‘crimes of their parents. To escape from the fines imposed by the government for giving birth to illegal children, parents often resorted to drastic measures like infanticide and abandonment of infants or less severe measures like circumventing the law by hiding such children away from prying eyes of the Family Planning Officials.

The clash between the traditional mindset where multiple children are regarded as the backbone of families rooted in an agrarian society and the Draconian measures taken by the government to curtail the exploding population growth often resulted in devastating and bleak futures for these illegal children.

Illegal children are denied hukou and deprived of basic rights like education, healthcare, and access to government posts and jobs. Of course, there are families who paid fines imposed by the government to gain a hukou for their illegal children and there are others who used their connections to legitimate the existence of the said child. However, not all families could afford such money and there are many children who lived their entire life in the shadows. The author herself and her friend nicknamed ‘Sunshine being the obvious examples of the above scenario. While the author has a chance at education, her friend is stripped of his right to go to school despite his bright academic performance and has no choice but to work in a factory.

‘My childhood may have been grey, but the days I spent with you two were brightly coloured.

For me, ‘Sunshine is an unforgettable character. His optimism, forgiveness, and his understanding of his own circumstances broke my heart. He is the representative of the countless children whose innocence and bright futures were destroyed by the whims of an ignorant and harsh government.

More Than One Child provides a detailed account of the author’s life as an illegal child and the abuse and trauma inflected by her family. Reading about the domestic and emotional abuse the author suffered as a child made me angry, sad, and hateful. But in the ending chapters, where the author explained the background of her family and the trauma an entire generation suffered during and because of the cultural revolution(when the Red Guards are in force), I suddenly understood the reason behind their actions. Forget about the author, even I as a reader couldn’t bring myself to forgive her family. But I can understand why everything happened in the inevitable way it had.

In simple words, the author paints how violence and trauma can generate a cycle of abuse that can affect generations of family. And as she rightly said at the end ‘although the one-child-per-family era has ended, the wounds it inflicted over three decades have not healed. People lost their jobs and families were fined, women were injured and baby girls were abandoned. Time only heals surface scratches, and there are still women with their hearts full of pain.

More Than One Child is a moving memoir of a girl’s resilience and her ability to forge through life despite her bitter circumstances. It is history—a mosaic of inked words legitimating the experiences of the illegal, a brave voice echoing the memories of the countless children otherwise lost in the labyrinth of time.

More Than One Child by Shen Yang is both heartbreaking and captivating. As I read, I kept thinking, “How could all of this happen to one person? The book blends sharp honesty with a touch of irony, making it an emotional yet engaging experience. The author speaks from experience, which makes her story even more powerful and authentic.

Beyond the personal story, which is such an undiscovered glimpse of life that a lot of people might be unfamiliar with, two key themes stood out to me. First, the political aspect the One-Child Policy feels like an unnatural attempt at social engineering, leading to lasting imbalances and unexpected consequences. Shen Yang’s life shows, in a powerful way, how a government policy can change everything overnight and why such decisions must not be made anymore in the future.

Second, the cultural context the narrow-mindedness and ignorance of the people surrounding Shen Yang was demoralizing. I felt frustrated by the harshness and bad attitudes she used to withstand, but then I realized that similar scenarios do exist in any rural and backward environments. It’s also striking how the people who harmed Shen Yang were themselves victims of earlier political decisions, passing down trauma from one generation to the next.

This book made me laugh at times, moved me deeply, and most importantly helped me reflect on the hidden effects of top-down policies and the lasting wounds they create. I highly recommend it to everyone, as its themes are universal and thought-provoking.

The biggest difference between this book and other historical or pain literature is that the author describes the story under this policy from an objective point of view, without either trial or evaluation, as the previous review said:Where she used the body of her memoir to present history from her lived challenging upbringing, she presented a life jacket for those who mistreated her. Unwilling participants of the Cultural Revolution, Shen allowed the readers to understand why her caretakers had become so
bitter and jaded, neither justifying
nor judging their person but

This book is a pure gem from the beginning to the end.
It truly opened my eyes to a subject that affected all my life but in a very different way.
Being myself, born under this one-child policy, and growing up in Canada, I realized how our lives started at a similar point, but we had a completely different destiny.
This subject remains sensitive for many people, however, the way the author wrote her memoirs, as a reader, I felt her pain, anger, resilience, hope, love and after all her positivity/optimism.
She doesn't let her past determine her future; she has so much strength within her, that it is a true example to follow.

This is a superb book that should be read by anyone interested in the experience of people who are excluded from society. Yang writes a poignant and touching account of her life growing up in China under draconian population laws. We learn what it was like to be a non-citizen, and basically a non-entity, in Chinese society simply as a result of being born. The book is personal and brings the reader through many difficult experiences, while somehow retaining a positive tone. I strongly recommend this to anyone interested in China, but also to those who want to understand the lived experience of being rejected by society as well as the strength and resilience the author develops as she grows up and learns to be independent. It's a wonderful book.

More Than One Child is a memoir of the author's life growing up in 1990s China as an “excess child during its One-Child-Policy years.

Between 1980-2015, the government implemented the One-Child-Policy out of fears of overpopulation. The Chinese Communist Party credits the program with contributing to the country’s economic ascendancy, saying that it prevented 400 million births. The period also saw women who would otherwise have been child-rearing participating more in the workforce.

However, pundits in the West widely criticized the policy for perceived human rights abuses such as forcing women to use contraception, receive abortions, and undergo sterilization. Also, a cultural preference for sons led to the abandonment of unwanted infant girls, some of whom died while others were adopted abroad.

And what of the children who survived in the shadows? Little has been written about their lives. This is the harrowing story of one such girl.

The author says only-children during this period enjoyed the care and concern of their families and the state. By contrast, the excess-birth children, the illegals, who escaped abortion and infanticide, were socially excluded, raised in silence and secrecy, and made to pay for the mistakes of their parents.

As soon as the author was born as a second child, her parents sent her to live with her grandparents in a relatively undeveloped village to avoid the excess birth fine which they could not afford and to avoid having her mother sterilized; her parents still hoped for a son to carry on the family line.

The author describes a mostly sunny early childhood living in the country with clean air and open spaces under the care of her doting grandparents. Still, there were frightening raids by the local family planning officers. She described one such event when officers pounded on the door at night while she hid in the roof space in the arms of her Granddad. When her Nana opened the door, officers rushed in and began turning the house upside down in their search.

“I was so frightened I buried my head in Granddad’s jacket and blocked my ears. I couldn’t look or listen. I was afraid that if they discovered me, I would vanish into the dark night and never see my grandparents again. From More Than One Child by Shen Yang

At five, when her grandmother could no longer manage an energetic child, the author went to live with an aunt and uncle hardened from the violence and chaos of the decade of Cultural Revolution, which occurred during their upbringing. Her life took a decidedly downward turn under their abusive care, and the text is filled with her longing for the warmth of a mother’s affection and a sense of belonging.

Still, her aunt and uncle did her one significant good turn. They purchased for her an official identity, a hukou document so she could get an education and enjoy other benefits of legal citizenship. Hukou is the system of household registration used in China. Without such a document, she would always be considered illegal.

One of the most heartbreaking stories is of a school friend who is also an excess birth child. His relatives fail to purchase a hukou document for him. Though he is a kind soul and near the top of his sixth-grade class, he is forced to quit his education and go to work because of his illegal status.

Through her years of hardship, I kept hoping for a happy ending. When it comes, it is not the one I hoped for or expected, but it is satisfying; it is genuine and not the stuff of fairytales. I admire the steps she takes to heal her trauma, grow as a human being, and reconcile with her aunt and uncle without compromising herself. I recommend More Than One Child as an eye-opening, moving, and essential memoir for anyone interested in the experiences of those excluded from society.

Even though I am an only child, I found this memoir very touching and engaging. The author took me on a rollercoaster of emotions: some parts made me cry while others made me laugh out loud. Also it shed light on aspects of the One Child Policy that I had no idea about, and as a designer it really made me reflect on how deep the consequences of policy can affect people's daily lives. Overall I found its overall message uplifting, it inspired me to persevere and keep a positive mindset even during the bleakest circumstances. I totally recommend it to everyone, regardless of their childhood 😊

"More Than One Child" offers an insightful perspective on China's One Child Policy through the eyes of a child. The memoir expertly blends humor and seriousness, making it a heartwarming yet thought-provoking read. It's a brilliant story that not only entertains but also provides a deeper understanding of China's cultural societal dynamics. Highly recommended for its engaging narrative and its ability to shed light on a significant moment in China's contemporary history with a personal point of view.
