This book... omg this book! So much fun adventures in a salad
They're vegetables, but clearly separated into a class system! The peasants are veggies that grow in the dirt (onions, carrots..) and the nobility grows high above (cherries, oranges) and then, of course, the inbetween Tomato!
Who else but this guy can write up an adventure that keeps you hella entertained when you're 6, but then notice politics parodies when 26

In the form of a fairy tale "Cipollino", the Italian writer Gianni Rodari shows the process of maturation of the revolutionary mood in society, when the tyranny and pressure of the rulers are so high that population can no longer tolerate bullying and oppression. The rulers and the population seem to live in different worlds. The rulers do not understand population who live under the pressure of their unjust laws and decrees, in poverty and deprivation. Impunity and absolute power gives rulers a sense of the endless patience of the society. I think that one of the most important ideas of this book is that good conquers evil. Also this story shows that it is able to win by uniting.

Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1951 dalle Edizioni di Cultura Sociale, questo romanzo di Gianni Rodari prese nel �57 il titolo definitivo Le avventure di Cipollino presso la casa editrice romana Editori Riuniti che, con nuove illustrazioni, lo ha ripubblicato anche in anni recenti.
Quello di Cipollino, personaggio decisamente originale nato dalla fantasiosa penna di Gianni Rodari (1920-1980), fu un vero successo a livello internazionale poiché il libro è stato tradotto in numerose lingue, tra le quali russo, cinese, giapponese e addirittura armeno e mongolo. In particolare, nei Paesi al di là della Cortina di ferro, la fortuna di cui poté godere il romanzo fu enorme, tant’� che nell’URSS, dov’era giunto già nel 1953, da esso venne poi tratto un cartone animato di lungo metraggio e persino una commedia.
Al centro della elaborata trama dell’opera, soprusi, avidità, sfruttamento e brama di potere sullo sfondo di una curiosa società di tipo vegetale popolata d’ogni sorta di frutta e ortaggi (limoni, mandarini, ciliegie, pere, zucchine, piselli, prezzemolo, pomodori e, naturalmente, cipolle, etc.), senza escludere alcune figure animali come nella migliore tradizione favolistica. Il desiderio di riscatto e giustizia porta a una vera e propria rivolta al fine di sovvertire l’iniquo e aristocratico ordine costituito e costruire pertanto un mondo più giusto per i ceti popolari; dunque, la lotta di classe e altri concetti cari al comunismo non sono estranei a questo significativo lavoro di Rodari, il quale, come noto, ancor prima della fine del secondo conflitto mondiale, si era avvicinato al Partito Comunista italiano.
Alla luce del chiaro intento pedagogico da parte dell'autore, si tratta di un classico destinato principalmente ai giovanissimi lettori, che non potranno non restare colpiti da personaggi come quello del medesimo protagonista, lo scaltro Cipollino, o quelli del Cavalier Pomodoro, Ciliegino, sor Zucchina e tanti altri. Una bella e piacevole lettura, tuttavia, anche per gli adulti interessati a (ri)scoprire Gianni Rodari. Per quanto mi riguarda, mi sono divertita decisamente di più seguendo le avventure di , tra le pagine del dimenticato romanzo, anch’esso per ragazzi, di Yambo (Enrico Novelli) che ho avuto occasione di leggere di recente; quelle di Cipollino, per quanto frutto di una fantasia di altissimo livello, non mi hanno infine coinvolta allo stesso modo: l'età che avanza avrà giocato, forse, un brutto scherzo.

This is such a wonderful book. Le avventure di Cipollino is a book for children and adults. And Vladimir Suteev's illustrations are amazing as well.

Препрочитането на любимите детски книжки е крайно приятно занимание. Непреходното трезвомислие на Пипи всеки път ме изумява, а непоклатимата логика на празния стомах на Карлсон ми е помагала в не един труден момент.
Затова се насочих към нещо не по-малко любимо � “Приключенията на Лукчо� от Джани Родари. И не сбърках. Не само намерих познато удоволствие � открих истинската история на книгата, която като дете очаквано ми е убягнала.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Generally, I adore Gianni Rodari. I think that his approach has changed children's literature for ever. He was speaking directly to children's heart with a voice that they could understand. He used funny situations to talk to children about the most difficult and important ideas in life.
However, this book was not what I expected. I think that it was too long, some of the chapters did not make much sense and there were too many characters involved so that in the end you forgot who was who. Surprisingly enough, it was boring. That's why it took me so much time to finish it.
Of course I can see some qualities in the book: important values are presented and children are called to identify themselves with the "good" guys. The "bad" people, despite being also funny, are too bad and children can easily recognise them.
I think that the shortcomings of the book are justified by the fact that this was one of the first books that Rodari wrote. He was just building his skills which were further developed and thrived in his next books.

Италианският майстор на перото ангажира детската аудитория с някои социални и дори политически теми, но го прави по начин, който е интуитивно разбираем и цели да изобличи неправдите и хорската поквара, пък дори и когато героите не са точно хора. Бащата на Лукчо е хвърлен в затвора, обвинен несправедливо от злоупотребяващи с властта си тирани, които са над закона. Следват възходи и падения, бягство и бунт, докато накрая идва ред на правдата най-накрая да възтържествува.
Всеки запознат с живота на Джани Родари и събитията, случващи се в Европа по времето на неговото поколение, неизменно ще съзре паралел между сюжета на книгата и суровата историческа реалност. Но както се полага на един истински мечтател и хуманист, Родари успява да събере страха, жестокостите и горчилката и да ги облече във фантастични, шарени одежди, учейки читателите да пазят своите добродетели и да следват моралния си компас. Класика, сееща в младите умове семената на човечността и гражданското самосъзнание.

Un libro de aventuras divertidas, con varios rescates de prisioneros de las mazmorras de un castillo y de una cárcel. Los malos resultan demasiado tontos, pero la historia está llena de la gracia e imaginación propias de Rodari.

“Le avventure di Cipollino� di Gianni Rodari
Gianni Rodari è considerato tutt’oggi il maggiore autore italiano per bambini. I suoi racconti, le sue favole, le sue filastrocche persino, nascono con un fortissimo intento didascalico e pedagogico, oltre che con l’intenzione di divertire i bambini educandoli, come si addice ad ogni bravo maestro di scuola. Il suo, tuttavia, è un educare i bambini non solo alla vita, ai valori, alla società, ma anche a guardare oltre la realtà delle cose, lasciando nelle loro piccole menti impronte di grandi questioni sociali e storiche in un linguaggio che per essi è e sarà sempre comprensibile. Questa favola in forma di romanzo ha esattamente questi intenti pedagogici e ludici. Cipollino è un ragazzino il cui padre, Cipollone, è stato dichiarato nemico dello stato per aver accidentalmente pestato i piedi al sovrano, re Limone, e messo in galera; l’unica cosa che ha detto a Cipollino prima di venire portato via è stato di impegnarsi a studiare, non le materie scolastiche, no, perché quelle a studiarle son bravi tutti, ma la materia più importante di tutti: i bricconi. ‹‹Quando ne troverai uno, fermati a studiarlo bene›�. Ed è così che ha inizio il viaggio di Cipollino, un viaggio che lo porterà a conoscere amici di ogni classe sociale, dal povero sor Zucchina a cui vogliono rubare la casetta, al contino Ciliegino ammalato di solitudine, dal ciabattino Mastro Uvetta al postino Ragno Zoppo, e a scontrarsi con nemici che sono accomunati dalla brama di potere e dal piacere che provano nell’esercitarlo sui più deboli. Dal re Limone al Cavalier Pomodoro, dal servizievole don Prezzemolo all’avido Duchino Mandarino, i vertici del potere politico sono sinonimo di oppressione, spavalderia, cattiveria e tirannia, e soltanto la furbizia e la perseveranza di un ragazzino che sogna la libertà può salvare il Reame e trasformarlo in Repubblica.
Risulta immediato considerare come la nascita del racconto, pubblicato per la prima volta sulla rivista filocomunista per bambini ‹‹il Pioniere›� diretta dallo stesso autore, sia strettamente legata alla storia europea del �900. Non solo l’Italia si era appena scrollata di dosso il giogo della dittatura fascista, ma aveva assistito alla follia nazista di Hitler e assisteva ancora al perseverare del regime franchista, di medesimo stampo ideologico. Né è un caso se Rodari, quasi sconosciuto in Italia fino a qualche tempo prima e ancora autore molto sottostimato dalla nostra critica, abbia spopolato in URSS, quando ancora i Russi si gloriavano di aver abbattuto la monarchia zarista e nascondevano agli occhi del mondo di essere una dittatura loro stessi. La grande lezione di vita che Rodari vuole insegnare ai bambini, ai suoi bambini come a quelli futuri, è la più importante che si possa imparare, e forse oggi data troppo per scontata: la libertà è un bene che non ha prezzo, e va difesa e, se persa, riconquistata ad ogni costo. Ma la libertà è anche un bene condiviso: per averla ciascuno di noi, devono averla tutti.

Such a cute book for kids, but not only for them. :)
My mom grew up reading this fairy-tale populated by personified vegetables, with political satire undertones. The onion-guy is locked up by evil Lemon Prince, for disagreeing with its dominion of all other plant forms. Such a sour character this lemon dude, right? The other veggies and fruits conspire to break Oniony out of jail, and go through funny and meaningful adventures throughout their journey.
Now, 50 years later from my mom's time, the book was republished with new and fancier drawings. I was so giddy to see it relaunched in bookstores I bought it right away as a gift to my mom and my own little daughter who will start enjoying it soon, in a couple of years, probably.
I re-read it just now and couldn't be happier and more excited. It's really a nice and funny story that will make you wish all children's books are like this one. :)

December 29, 2022This book is recommended reading per Hayao Miyazaki. It's an allegory for fascism where the proletariat are vegetables and the nobility are fruit, originally written in Italian in 1951 and never translated into English (shall I give it a go?). So my only option was to track down the rather recent and rare Spanish translation. I even looked for it in libraries and bookstores while in Spain. After several years, I found it being printed in Colombia through an online Latin American bookstore. Shipping wasn't even terrible. And here we are!
It's a story of bravery, resourcefulness, and community against nonsensical tyranny and greed. I'm left with the weight of the last line- that this story needs to be told to prevent history repeating itself.

Хареса ми, защото има много приключения. Принц Лимон си намери мястото, т.е. в торището и че всичко в Епилога се нарежда много добре.
Любим герой ми стана Паякът Разносвач, защото е много добър и помага на хората в затвора да си пишат, но ми стана много тъжно, защото го изяде една кокошка.
Най-смешният момент беше когато Мандарина видя знамето на републиката и каза: "Ще се удавя ако някой не махне знамето." И тогава Праз каза: "Наистина ли?" и бутна Мандарина в басеина.
Давам 4 звездички, а не 5, защото имаше една много скучна глава с Морков, където той не можеше да си открие леглото без компас.

U djetinjstvu sam obožavala ovaj roman. Bilo mi je zanimljivo čitati o malom luku i njegovom životu koji je zapravo alegorija za nas ljude i naše živote.

Като бях дете ми бешв 5 звезди, но сега ми беше откровено скучна. И не, не е защото съм голяма вече. Паралелно почнахме “Еми� от Льонеберя� с дъщеря ми и е в пъти по-забавна�. Все пак за мен бе удоволствие да си припомня патилата на Лукчо и приятели.

В книге много забавных и запоминающихся персонажей и событий, но читать было не особо интересно. Повествование не очень целостное: такое ощущение, что автор постоянно сталкивался с проблемой "что бы еще такое придумать, о чем написать?". А, может, это и норма для детских книжек, не знаю.

Надо сказать, что поначалу детского писателя Джанни Родари гораздо лучше знали в России, чем в Италии. Нам его открыл Самуил Маршак, который перевел его прекрасные стихи, а потом пересказал «Приключения Чиполлино». Именно пересказал, потому что ему дали на редактуру слабый перевод, и он просто по-своему переписал всю сказку. По справедливости, издательство должно было бы обозначить на титуле не «перевод Златы Потаповой», а «пересказал Самуил Маршак».

Scritto nel 1951 è molto attuale. Ricco di riflessioni e come sempre parla ad adulti e bambini. Il prossimo anno lo propongo ai miei piccoli. È necessario fare capire valori universali quali la solidarietà, la cooperazione, l' aiuto reciproco, il bene comune, l' accettazione dell' altro, la pace.

Rekomenduoju paskaityti visiems ir atrasti panašumus ir skirtumus su sovietine animacija. Bet tuo pačiu linkiu paskaityti ir šio leidimo gale pateikiamą redaktoriaus straipsnį apie tiek Rodario, tiek Čipolino kontekstą vaikų literatūroje. Nors jis ir gavo Anderseno premiją ir nepritarė fašizmui, jis deja buvo komunistas ir socialistinės lygybės idėjos jau sėjamos per Čipoliną ir tekstuose vaikams.

I read this novel when I used to be younger (perhaps 4th grade or more little) and I enjoyed it just so much, even though I didn't understand the history where it takes place, but still I loved it so much as a kid and all the times he set his self on an adventure unknowingly occasionally...

Ancora difficile da capire dopo aver imparato l'italiano solo per un'estate. Ma non è impossibile.
Mi e piaciuto. Per me, sono le stesse categorie di Le Petit Prince: straordinariamente creativo, e piene di significato nascosto.
Con bellissime illustrazione.
