I wish I could delete this fic from my brain, and then read it again as if it were the first time. There are so many small details, expertly expressed feelings and seemingly casually placed words that had me slack-jawed in awe. There is so much anger, sorrow, self-disgust and pure, simple love that had me almost in tears. There is innuendo, a touch of really awkward flirting, trauma, drugs, panic attacks, glasswork, inspiration, drawing and longing. Forgiveness, lust, and so much love - I want what they have. There are absurdly in character Jackson, Lydia, Stiles, Derek and Scott - although this remark kind of ruins the emotional mood I was setting up.
It's soul-crushingly sad at times, but overall just incredibly joyous (and very original). It's one of those fics that leave me kind of lost for words. In case you hadn't noticed.
This was quite the sedate and very, very contemplative Sterek.
Told from Derek's POV, as always, he's with his usual self loathing, his usual fear of loving again. Though this starts out with him simply being intrigued by Stiles's art, he can't help but be slowly won over by his boundless energy and inability to be put off by Derek's surly disposition.
Derek is often his own worst enemy, stymied by insecurity, worried he will never measure up. You really see how much he wants to express himself but just can't. And of course, Stiles handles him expertly, always intuitively, with great panache and never pushing too much despite his own hurt feelings.
I was touched, I laughed out loud, and then I swooned - because it's them and I marvel at seeing these two in different scenarios but never losing their sense of self - the author remained true to that in this human AU.
Again, very slow and contemplative, but the sedateness works. Surprisingly angsty and pleasingly sexy.
Wow. That was just, I don't know. That was just so freaking good. I mean, it was an amazing story and the writing? Shit, perfect. Just wow. So many feels. This is a must read and I have no idea why it has been sitting on my shelf unread since October 2014.
This is one of those books that will stick with me forever, I just know it. It is also one of those totally amazing fics that I think anyone could read. It is just a great fucking book regardless of it being Sterek. Wow.
All human AU. Derek's POV. Derek is a glassblower. Stiles is a college student studying Graphic Design. This might be the most canon compliant human AU Sterek I have ever read - which seems preposterous considering no werewolves, no supernatural, no pack dynamics - yet this story is true to canon and true to the characters.
This is a genuinely beautiful story. And probably what it does best is keep all of the characters true to the show, while humanizing them ... especially Derek. There is a slow build Sterek that does take place and does climax with sexy times (though I would say "Mature" rather than "Explicit") and revelation of feelings, but this fic stands out for translating Derek into a human characterization while keeping him intrinsically who he is. Derek not having to worry about having to be hunted for what he is, but still so broken from the loss of his family due to Kate, having to rebuild his shattered mental/emotional constitution and finding art to help him heal. Keeping himself on the fringe of social interactions, but knowing he has to interact. So self conscious of his looks and questioning how genuine others' reactions to him. (Which is something I liked, because I feel that Derek is very much aware of how he looks and rather self conscious because of it). Constantly scared, but trying so hard. So fragile, so strong, so human.
Stiles, too, is done well, he is not fragile, but he is flawed. He wants Derek's attention, but knows he needs to coax him out.
Beautiful, beautiful characterization of human!Derek.
He lives in Beacon Hills, he's a Hale, he belongs there, and Stiles belongs with him.
This was a pretty good story. For those of you that don't know...Sterek fanfic is based off 2 male characters, Stiles and Derek, from the TV show Teen Wolf. In the show they're both heterosexual but some viewers have fantasized about them together in a m/m relationship and thus Sterek was born. This one isn't based in the TV show world and there is no paranormal in this story. Derek lost his family in a fire and eventually started doing glassblowing as a way to relax as he still has issues stemming from his trauma. Stiles is an art student away at college in LA but comes back to Beacon Hills to visit. Scott, Stiles' BFF works for Derek as his assistant in the glass studio.
Scott is a messy employee and while trying to straighten things up, Derek comes across some designs for glass pieces that are wonderful. They speak to something within Derek and he really feels the need to see them made, especially since he hasn't had much luck coming up with new designs himself. When he asks Scott about them, he finds out that Scott's friend Stiles drew them to use for a birthday present for his father. When Stiles actually comes to town for a week, Derek and he meet but it's rocky at first and Derek has a hard time admitting any interest in Stiles. Stiles and Scott decide against using the designs Stiles drew but Derek speaks out against them being thrown away and asks to buy them from Stiles. This start up a communication between Stiles and Derek that continues even after Stiles goes back to school. They're both interested in a relationship but Derek is kind of messed up and afraid to get in to a relationship with Stiles and then do something to mess it up. Derek does express an interest in more of Stiles' designs though, which brings around some unexpected issues. There's a bit of a rocky road but Stiles and Derek are able to get their acts together and the story ends with them pretty solidly together.
This was a pretty enjoyable story. This story was told from Derek's PoV and because of his family trauma, Derek was damaged...maybe more than in the TV show because in this story he didn't even have Laura after the fire. Seeing him start to allow himself to connect with Stiles and start to try to be a man that could deserve Stiles (to start healing) was very sweet. I suppose it also didn't hurt when it becomes apparent that even Stiles has imperfections. Overall, it was a very good romance with little drama. :D
This started out as a 3 then at the 70% mark kinda fell flat for me. I never felt Stiles and Derek connect, and the writing style focused too much on arbitrary things. That being said its not bad just did not work for me.
Derek's still captain grumpy-pants, even if he's not a werewolf in this AU. He turned to glass blowing as a form of therapy, and kept at it because he was good at it.
Scott is Derek's assistant.
Stiles is in art school and sends Scott some sketches of some ideas for a birthday present Stiles asked Scott to make for his Stiles's birthday. They end up not making a birthday gift, but Derek sees the sketches and instantly becomes obsessed with making them.
Stiles comes to visit Scott and comes to Derek's shop. He and Derek are delightful together as always, and the unique AU setting felt fresh and interesting and fun.
Lovely story.
Favorite Quotes: He keeps that's the problem. He wants to make something beautiful, but nothing beautiful ever keeps in the depths of Derek's mind.
"But I swear to God I'm not as clumsy as I used to be in high school. You just--you shouldn't have snuck up on me like that, come on."
Living can be such an ugly process; Derek would count it as a win if he brought joy into even one person's life with Stiles' creations.
but you're making me nervous, with your hand in my face and your scary eyebrows and stuff.
They get into a few shouting matches throughout the process, but those are resolved quickly--Stiles always gives in whenever Derek threatens him with something sharp.
Stiles has drawn him as someone who knows what he's doing, when it takes Derek everything he has just to muck through every day on his own two feet.
it's as if everything bad within him mutes and collapses for one, long-strung instant.
Although the percentage of vocal participation is about eighty percent Stiles and twenty percent Derek, they're both comfortable with that.
And if they're both fucked up, at least their fucked up edges slot in neatly with each other's.
Though Stiles on drugs should never-ever happen. He is too precious for that. Also, I don't really think he'd be fool enough to fall head-first into drug abuse. But, well, I'm biased - I adore him. (also also - I kind of see him as a razor type of guy, etching into skin)
