Rashomon (1950), The Seven Samurai (1954), and Ran (1985), set in feudal Japan of director Akira Kurosawa, greatly influenced American and European filmmaking.

This producer, screenwriter, and editor, regarded of the most important and influential in the history of cinema, directed thirty in a career, spanning 57 years.

Following a brief stint as a painter, Kurosawa entered the industry in 1936. After years of working as an assistant and scriptwriter, he made his debut in 1943 during World War II with the popular action film Sanshiro Sugata, also known as Judo Saga. After the war, the critically acclaimed Drunken Angel (1948), in which Kurosawa cast then-unknown actor Toshirō Mifune in a starring role, cemented the reputation of the most important young filmmakers in Japan. The two men went to collaborate on another 15 films.

Rashomon, which premiered in Tokyo in August 1950, and which also starred Mifune, on 10 September 1951 surprisingly won the golden lion at the Venice film festival and was subsequently released in Europe and North America. The commercial and critical success opened up western markets for the first time to the products of the industry, which in turn led to international recognition for other artists. Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, Kurosawa included a number of highly regarded films, such as Ikiru (1952) and Yojimbo (1961). After the mid-1960s, his much less prolific later work, including his penultimate epic, Kagemusha (1980), continued to win awards, including the Palme d'Or, more often abroad.

In 1990, he accepted the academy award for lifetime achievement. Posthumously, AsianWeek magazine and Cable News Network named him "Asian of the century" in the "arts, literature, and culture" category and cited him as "one of the [five] people who contributed most to the betterment of Asia in the past 100 years."

In this memoir the celebrated Japanese director covers his childhood, early adulthood and the beginning of his film-making career, up to his breakthrough triumph, Rashomon.

Oddly enough, it was the stories of his early years that I found most fascinating and moving. Kurosawa was born in 1910, at a time when relics of the old feudal Japan could still be seen everywhere (his middle-aged aunt used to blacken her teeth, in the manner of married women in the Meiji era), but globalism was already spreading at breakneck speed (at the age of 19 he saw at a Tokyo cinema Un Chien Andalou, the surrealist short film created by Luis Bu?uel and Salvador Dalí). During the first thirty years of his life he witnessed the harrowing deaths of close family members, the Great Tokyo Earthquake and the fire and anti-Korean riots that followed it, and the pervasive pressure-cooker atmosphere of a world in turmoil, in which Japan was struggling to find its place.

In comparison, I found the second half of the book less moving. His stories about film-making were interesting and at times entertaining, but they did not form much more than a collection of anecdotes.

The story of a life lived during a particularly fascinating era in the history of a country that has always remained an intriguing riddle is told with honesty, candour and perception. Highly recommended!

Camera obscura

In this autobiography-thing, movie director Akira Kurosawa tells his life experiences from his babyhood to the completion of critically acclaimed Rashōmon (1950). It proves quite a straightforward and chronological account, inasmuch as, when AK digresses, it mostly provides the depth and convergence line the whole account of those decisive years needed.

My most sincere thanks to Tara for a superb buddy read- 13/07/2020

MY OPINION ON THE 'THING':

This compelling autobiography reads like a lifestory told now jocosely, now in a far more sorrowful tone. In any event, the text always has something to offer, be it the teller's straightforward writing style and strong-willed nature, a rare sensibility towards the absurd, and a keen sense of humour, especially self-derision.

Incidently I found Akira Kurosawa's lifepath—especially the early stages of his life from infancy to his mid-twenties—somewhat reminiscent of... H.P. Lovecraft's...

Significantly, one of the most significant points of interest the book has in store are the various instances of combativeness, determination, but also the short-tempered nature and obstinacy evinced by AK, fighting absurd, finicky censors and arbitrary, crippling authorities repeatedly throughout this part of his life!

In the course of this narrative, Kurosawa pays tribute to countless people who had a determining influence on his life: his parents, his teacher Mr. Tachikawa, his friend Uekusa, film director Kajirō Yamamoto... People who, each in their own way, pointed out to him the primacy of fostering creativity and individuality in their teachings.

I couldn't help noticing AK's nostalgic disposition (perhaps bordering on backwardness sometimes?), but that can hardly be blamed on him given both Kurosawa's personal history and the history of Japan. This ambiguous relationship to 'westernization' can also be found in Yukio Mishima's works, perhaps never more strongly as in the short story collection and in the novel .

Accordingly, choosing Rashōmon (1950) as the closing film looks highly symbolical to me, as both works are all about the aptitude people have to tell their lives as honestly as posible (or not!). In Kurosawa's case I'd say he sounds genuine and quite open-handed to me, yet there may be more to his youth than meets the eye, especially regarding his stance & actions during the years he spent in the Proletarian Artist League and in underground Communist activities, as an assistant editor to a proletarian newspaper) or in the course of the 3 Tōhō studio strikes.

Finally, the text is instrumental in shedding light on several of AK's movies:

1) Toyokawa village in the Akita prefecture, his father's birthplace may have provided inspiration for The 'Vilage of the Watermills' short in Dreams (1990). Feel free to check the link below, 27:20 :)

2) Tragicomic life with his brother Heigo in the Kagurazaka stockade with low-pay workers and unemployed people, having quarrels & nasty affairs, is strongly evoking The Lower Depths (1957).
Based on Maxim Gorki's namesake play, with Kurosawa changing the setting from 19th-century Russia to Edo-period Japan.

3) The Great Kantō Earthquake (1923) presumably forms a sort of background to the devastating Castle attack scene in Ran (1980).

'The whole Edogawa River district was veiled in a dancing, swirling dust whose grayness gave the sun a pallor like that during an eclipse.'

'The people who stood to the left and the right of me in this scene looked for all the world like fugitives from hell, and the whole landscape took on a bizarre and eerie aspect. I stood holding on to one of the young cherry trees planted along the banks of the river, and I was still shaking as I gazed out over the scene, thinking, "This must be the end of the world." '

Ran (1980)

------------

SOME REMARKABLE SCENES FROM KUROSAWA'S FILMOGRAPHY:

BOOKS & WORKS OF THE SAME KIN:

Especially regarding the nature of the teacher-student relationship

Two of the short stories being adapted in Kurosawa's Rashōmon (1950)

The timelines of Yukio Mishima's novel and Kurosawa's autobiography overlap, both displaying the parallel rise of:
- isolationism (Japan's withdrawal from the League of Nations),
- militarianism (during the transition from Taishō to Showa period, compulsory military education in schools, increasing censure towards publications judged westernized or anti-army by boards of censors...),
- social unrest on the eve of the Pacific War : 05/15/1932 'incident', 02/26/1936 'incident' (failed coups), among others.

Also, part of Rashōmon was filmed on the wooded slopes of Mount Wakakusa, a rough 30km from Mount Miwa, where significant events happen in Runaway Horses.

Also an autobiography, with Orhan Pahmuk's project to define and assess the various influences on his works, although it is more prevalent in Something Like an Autobiography.

This is the second brilliant autobiography from a film director that I've read in the last few weeks
(the other being Luis Bu?uel's My Last Sigh), and both of them had me wanting to rewatch some of their great movies. Kurosawa allocates a significant amount of space to his childhood, young adulthood, and his early years of working in the Japanese film industry. The book goes right up to him writing about the making of Rashomon, and it's international success after release. But it's here, at this point, that Kurosawa decides to stop writing; so, to my disappointment, we don't get to hear anything about the post-Rashomon period, where films such as Seven Samurai and Ikiru only bettered what he had previously done. Nevertheless, what is here still makes for a fascinating, moving, and wonderfully written book from one of the world's greatest ever film makers. The part about the Great Kantō earthquake of 1923, when a young Kurosawa was in middle school, was simply unforgettable.

“I am a maker of films; films are my true medium. I think that to learn what became of me after Rashōmon the most reasonable procedure would be to look for me in the characters in the films I made after Rashōmon. Although human beings are incapable of talking about themselves with total honesty, it is much harder to avoid the truth while pretending to be other people. They often reveal much about themselves in a very straightforward way. I am certain that I did. There is nothing that says more about its creator than the work itself.”

Kurosawa made a fair point, although I still wish this book would have covered his life and work after 1950. After all, it was written in 1981, and not discussing 31 years of your life isn’t exactly an insignificant omission.

That said, the book was informative, candid, and quite personal—all in all, an engaging, fascinating read. Kurosawa was a rather extraordinary human being, even above and beyond his filmmaking, and it was a pleasure to get to know him a little better.

Best, most authoritative (and certainly coolest!) review of this book:

Kurosawa was a true humanist. This book isn't an explanation of an artist's theories or an explication of his films--just a simple account of the memories of a very full and beautiful life. Yet Kurosawa never ignores his faults either. He just tells his story like it is. Sometimes he's so emotional, he makes me emotional just reading his earnestness, here about his directing mentor, Yama-san:

"At the party celebrating completion of Tojuro's Love, Mrs. Yamamoto came and spoke to me. 'My husband was very happy. He said Kurosawa can write scripts, handle the directing, do the editing, and now the dubbing--he'll be all right.' My eyes suddenly got very hot. Yama-san was the best kind of teacher. Yama-san, I promise you I'll try a little harder, a little longer. This is the memorial speech I offer up to Yama-san."

Akira Kurosawa would have you believe that he's just a hard working guy and nothing special. To some extent that's true, with his sense of diligence and attention to detail being the hallmark of all of his great films. What's given short shrift is the heart of a real artist. Early on, Kurosawa thought of himself as a slow learner, who only began to flourish when shown attention by a few sympathetic teachers. He hated math, and was drawn to the worlds of art and literature. He also had some important assists from a rebellious (and also artistic) older brother who would steer him toward books to read and movies to see. Kurosawa's militaristic father also turned out to be a movie lover, who would often drag the family to the movies to watch what was essentially a new form in its early stages. Chaplin, John Ford, D.W. Griffith, etc., the young future director absorbed it all. As he grew older, he went through his own rebellious period, trying his hand, without much success, at being an artist.

Around this time the talkies started to appear, and his brother (Heigo), who was working as a narrator for the silent films, would lose his job, and then commit suicide. A few years later, although he had no real film experience himself, Kurosawa would also drift into films himself -- but in a different way. He would, surprising himself, catch the eyes of the studio through a series of application essays. His earlier pre-film apprenticeship was obviously his extensive reading, his art, and what he had picked from his brother regarding films. Kurosawa was hired as an assistant director basically for what he thought and without any demonstrated experience. I find that remarkable.

As he learned the technical end of filmmaking, he excelled at script-writing, which would be his major strength throughout his career. But it wasn't just words. Kurosawa was also keen on how sounds and music and light could create counter-points for characters and scenes. Kurosawa spends some time explaining how he learned to employ these elements in his early films, up through "Rashomon." There are also several pages set aside for his discovery of the great Toshiro Mifune. (The chapter on the making of "Rashomon" is worth reading on its own.) Also included is an appendix with various pithy nuggets on filmmaking that are also a must-read. Highly recommended.

So pretty much like everyone else I went, "Aw, man!" out loud when the intro stated that this book only went up to Rashomon and didn't deal with any of Kurosawa's life after 1950. But the good news is that you get an intimate glimpse into Kurosawa's Taisho- and Showa-era upbringing and education. The passages on the Great Kanto Quake are horrifying and amazing and the years he spent living in a quirky-yet-incrdeibly-seedy bohemian-ish housing complex are also eye-opening. I also didn't know that one of the main things that fostered his interest in cinema in the first place was an elder brother whose short-lived career as a benshi gave the young, impressionable Kurosawa access to amazing films from around the world. And, ultimately, his matriculation through the studio system is a sad reminder that that world is truly dead and gone; through years of apprenticeship he was able to broaden his knowledge of nearly every aspect of quality film making in ways that are simply no longer an option. Course it didn't hurt that he was also, you know, a total artistic genius. Either way, this reminded me that I need to finally get around to watching his earlier movies too instead of merely re-watching Sanjuro five times a year--which is its own reward, I imagine.

Kurosawa recalls scenes from his childhood through his life up to his powerful film, Roshomon. This memoir ends purposefully with the 1950 film though it's written 30 years later as he describes that he doesn't believe a person can tell the whole truth about themselves.

Like his movies, Something Like an Autobiography is meticulous, thoughtful and visual. Kurosawa's humanistic thread runs through the book, from his childhood at school and with his family through his adulthood and movie making. He reflects on the Great Kanto earthquake, Japan's militarism and disastrous end during WWII, technological advances in his craft and multiple union strikes.

Fans of Kurosawa will probably enjoy his remembrances.

I watched my first Akira Kurosawa movie during my student days. It was 'Rashomon'. My college film club screened it. It was amazing. I have wanted to read Kurosawa's memoir since then. I finally got a chance to read it.

In his autobiography, Kurosawa-San starts by describing his earliest memory. He goes on to tell us about his family, his favourite brother and sister (his family was big – he had seven siblings), his favourite aunt who looked like a person from the Meiji era, his childhood, his favourite teacher in school, his love for reading, how he got into writing and painting, some of the big events that impacted his life like the earthquake in Tokyo in 1923, how he was a left-leaning radical person for a few years and how he was part of the underground. All these form the first part of the book. In the second part, Kurosawa-San describes how he got into the film industry, and describes his time there. He describes events till the time his most famous film 'Rashomon' won the Golden Lion in the Venice Film Festival. The end of the book has an eight-page chapter in which Kurosawa-San shares his thoughts on filmmaking. It is an eight page education on the art of filmmaking and it is fascinating.

I loved the book very much. But I loved the first part more. Because in that part Kurosawa-San describes his family, his childhood, his teachers, and takes us to the Japan of that era. It is fascinating! Many readers would be more interested in the second part however, because of the insights it offers on filmmaking. Kurosawa-San's prose is simple and spare. This enhances the impact of some of the moving scenes that he describes – the way his brother is protective towards him, how his favourite sister showers her love on him, the letter his favourite schoolteacher writes to him after he becomes a famous film director (I cried after I read that letter). Kurosawa-San is very frank and doesn't hesitate to speak his mind on different things. He doesn't hesitate to cast the same frank, critical eye on himself (In one place, while talking about his Luddite self, he says – "My son tells me that when I use the telephone it's as if a chimpanzee were trying to place a call." I laughed when I read that :) ) It is very refreshing. One more thing I love about the book is that in many places Kurosawa-San talks about his favourite books or mentions writers in context. I discovered many Japanese writers through these passages. I am hoping to read some of them, especially Shiba Ryotaro, who has written many epic historical novels.

The book ends in 1950. Kurosawa-San made films till around 1995 – that is nearly 45 years after the events in the book end. I wish there was a second part of this book, which covers that period.

Reading the book gave me goosebumps. Here was a person, who was from a middle-class family, who didn't go to college, who struggled with finances and who was drifting one way and then another till he was twenty-six, who learnt every aspect of filmmaking on the job – this person became one of the greatest film directors of alltime. It is such an amazing story and it is so hard to believe. Kurosawa-San tells how it all happened in his inimitable style.

I loved Kurosawa-San's book. It will definitely be one of my favourite books of the year and one of my alltime favourite memoirs. It is a book I'll be reading again.

Have you read Akira Kurosawa's 'Something Like an Autobiography'? What do you think about it?

An extremely enjoyable autobiography from the man himself, Akira Kurosawa. It almost felt like reading fiction with the fantastic prose and wonderful stories that Kurosawa provides. And Kurosawa in himself is such a likable and interesting character. It does deal with Kurosawa's filmmaking techniques, but more than anything it delves into Kurosawa as a person. Half of the book deals with Kurosawa before he even began making films. He wonderfully details his childhood from babyhood to near adult. Not only that but he captures the atmosphere of pre-war, war-time, and post-war Japan splendidly and will probably teach you a thing or two about Japanese culture while he's at it.

The second half of the book deals with his early films. To some misfortune he decided to only write up until his 1950 film Rashomon (which is arguably just where his career began to get especially interesting). But as Kurosawa himself says at the end of the book "I think that to learn what became of me after Rashomon the most reasonable procedure would be to look for me in the characters in the films I made after Rashomon." So you see, Kurosawa, in this thing that resembles an autobiography, has sucked us into his mind-state and shown us where he comes from, and, with that, it is with less challenge that we can fill in the pieces of his later life through his films.

Though it is a very personal book (as an autobiography very well should be) and Kurosawa is extremely open and honest in it, it does, as I mentioned, deal with Kurosawa's more technical side as well. Plus there is a great appendix titled "Some Random Notes on Filmmaking" where Kurosawa shares some of his best tips and advice in the medium.

An absolute must for any one interested in Kurosawa. Reading this is the best way to not only better understand Kurosawa as a person and as a filmmaker, but, in turn, to also better understand his films. I can imagine this being highly enjoyable even to one who knows near nothing about the man and his work.

This is part autobiography and part commentary on the films he did till 1950. He stops with Rashomon. And Rashomon was the only film I had seen in the list. That didn't in any way spoil the reading experience; his descriptions of whatever aspects he talks about makes it very clear to understand what he says. I have watched 4-5 other films of his which I guess released after 1950. He talks a bit about Seven Samurai just as an argument for why multiple cameras are needed sometimes to film certain movies, which incidentally was a criticism leveled against him during that time. I greatly enjoyed his recollections of his boyhood, his perspective about a variety of other things, his notes on movie making. It looks like movie making (for a director) wasn't such a lucrative thing in Japan in those days coz by the time he did Rashomon, he was a well-established name in Japan and had done 6-7 movies that were hits/semi-hits. And it so happens that he gets into an argument with the studio he works for and his contract is canceled or something and he walks the long distance from his studio to his house instead of taking a bus, all the while thinking about how to run his kitchen till he gets another film, only to be greeted by his wife informing him that Rashomon had won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and he gives a sigh of relief :).
And I found that certain tricks given by popular filmmakers on screenwriting/directing etc in their interviews come directly from this book. Totally worth your time if you are a cinephile.

This is not a footnoted, well-planned, look-to-posterity kind of memoir. It’s more of a quaint series of monologues from a man we think we know intimately, a conceit borne out of a familiarity of watching some films over and over again. But we still retain a sense of awe for an unrivaled genius, despite the contrived coziness. He tells us what he wants us to know, and that’s alright. Some of it might be significant, some not so much. In fact, I think most Kurosawa groupies like me rather enjoy this approach. The only downside is that it ends with the beginning of his worldwide fame: the reception of Rashomon. He could have gone on to more films and experiences. I would have liked to hear more. But I’ll take what I can get and enjoy the stories behind both the man and his early films. (I have a nagging feeling Neil Young was inspired by the style of this book.)

My favorite films as I think of them now:

1. Ikiru
2. Derzu Uzala
3. The Bad Sleep Well
4. Seven Samurai
5. The Hidden Fortress
6. Red Beard
7. Rashomon
8. High and Low
9. Yojimbo
10. Kagemusha
11. Sanjuro
12. Ran
13. Stray Dog
14. Throne of Blood
