Neti-Neti is one of the oldest meditation techniques in the world. Through this process of intense introspection, we discover that we are not limited to our bodies, emotions, or minds, for our true nature is actually boundless and numinous. Historically, these two simple words, Neti-Neti, have pointed the way for generations of seekers and contemplatives to free themselves from the constriction of the ego and suffering. Fortunately, you no longer have to be an expert meditator to practice or even benefit from the wisdom of Neti-Neti. It is now available for anyone seeking freedom in the knowledge of their true nature. Drawing upon his experiences as a Buddhist monk, Zen teacher, and meditation instructor, Andre Doshim Halaw has developed Neti-Neti into a full meditation practice specifically designed to address the human condition in the 21st century. Neti-Neti Meditation is a form of self-inquiry that eliminates who we think we are as a limited, separate person, and reveals our true nature as the formless, unconditioned Absolute itself, free of all imperfections and suffering. This book walks you step-by-step through the Neti-Neti process.
Continuing on the process of understanding emptiness of things and having heard about Neti-Neti (Not This, Not That) a while ago, I've decided to dive deep into reading and practicing more of this milenar approach of meditation. It's interesting though that by negating what you perceive to be yourself can actually bring you about to awaken to what you truly are...Neti-Neti trains us to look beyond our minds, bodies, gender, culture, relationship, roles - in short, everything we normally take ourselves to be - and recognise that none of this is us. To get to the point that everything comes and returns to Nothingness is one big leap however not an easy "task" to "achieve". Nicely put that this book (or any other for that matter) will bring about the awaken state described by practicing Neti-Neti but it makes you enquire about our personal identity which is the most complicated and compelling fictional characters ever. They are so convincing that we believe they are real. The author has truly condensed in a magnificent way the core of Neti-Neti and that condensation leaves you with room for more questioning and investigation but making it clear that the Absolute resides within every and each one of us. Reading is so far one of the best ways of having access to this milenar approach of meditation however nothing can substitute the practice of Neti-Neti or any other form of meditation which transcends duality and unify "you"with the inseparable Absolute. Worth reading if you'd like to learn another type of meditation.
Relatively short but enlightening read on the nature of Reality. The author describes in eloquent language what we all really are. We are "Not this, not that". If we slow down and meditate on our true nature, we will recognize that we are not who we think we are.
The book describes practical steps on how to find out true nature. We are not the I, we are not even the non-dual expression of the I, but we are the Absolute which cannot be spoken or described.
We are NOT the body. We are NOT our senses. We are NOT our emotions. We are NOT our social roles. We are NOT our thoughts and the story we create.
Whatever we think we are, we are NOT IT. And we can only arrive there by negation and deconstruction of our construction.
The steps for deconstructions are: 1. Identify the object. 2. Experience it. 3. Discern the labels. 4. Delabel it. 5. Empty it. 6. Transcend duality. 7. Negatate what remains.
Ultimately there is nothing to be said about the content of this book, but I encourage everyone who reads this review to read the book. It can take you beyond all concepts and ideas of even your own existence. There are no words to describe this because there is no destination and no arrival. As Thich Nhat Hanh put it, "Nothing to do. nowhere to go. noone to be."
The basic theme of "Neti Neti" is that we are the vast, empty and without attributes which are commonly referred to as the "Absolute". We are not what we think of ourselves as personality, our body and sensations or what we identity ourselves as a particular gender or role such as parent, child or sibling. The author discusses three levels of reality, the first one is called the manifest realm of matter and observable phenomena. The second is the manifest level beyond perceptions and conceptualizations and lastly the "Absolute" or the "Unmanifest". The author describes the "Absolute" as beyond all form, senses and awareness yet the author still maintains that the "Absolute" can be known. The analysis of the three levels of reality and the basis of all reality, ie. the "Absolute", seems very perplexing and difficult to grasp
I was told about this by my divorce attorney of all people and I adore her so much more for that. I’m under an immense amount of stress, and this book has allowed me to have calm in me again. So thankful. Changes how you look at life for the better.
Another masterpiece by Andre Halaw. This book will open our eyes to who we truly are by negating all that can perceived or conceived of as the highest principle that pervades the manifest universe. Highly recommended.
Great read. Easy to follow. A good guide for those who are looking to put Neti Neti into practice. And then to realise that even this practice will go and be forgotten.
Thy kingdom come. Let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind
