Ahh yes, I too hate it when I just want to do my job as a ghostwriter and my neighbor keeps sticking notes with atrocious spelling onto my door and he is always peeling onions in the hallway, and he also might be a serial killer, how annoying. Anyway, this is what the main character Shavonne has to keep up with in this manhwa, and he is also broke and currently having a rough time altogether, for the last 28 years or so. Enter his handsome but super weird and murderous neighbor Lewellyn who seems to have a more than usual interest in Shavonne. The manhwa explores their relationship and while this was really only the beginning, I couldn't look away. I shamefully have to admit that I kinda ship it, and I especially liked the approach that all people are inherently bad, but is someone specifically bad to you? I'm very interested in how their relationship develops and how much of a dark and toxic romance this will be.
The art was fine but nothing special, and the color palette was mostly grey and brown. While that may fit the story, it was also a little dull and it might be disappointing if you pay for the full color volume. But it would be interesting to see if more colors are added as the story continues. I also didn't love that every other character than Shavonne and Lewellyn was almost comically rude, and all authority like the police or the homeowner was incompetent and unhelpful. And there was a moment when Shavonne was super dumb (when he couldn't possibly know who sent the letters at the end), and I hope that whole situation isn't drawn out for too much longer. Anyway, I see a lot of potential with this story, and I think I'm going to continue at some time. It's only six volumes in total, so it's not never-ending like many other manhwa / webtoons, and that sounds good to me too.
Huge thanks to NetGalley and Yen Press for providing a digital arc in exchange for an honest review.
This was very weird, tonally. It was just a strange reading experience. I can't really pin down why it was weird, but I think it has something to do with nothing being too much. Everything in here was mild, no one was being creepy enough for me to call them out on it, no one was scarry enough to be frightening, and nothing was romantic enough for me to get those vibes either. Everything was just there and happened. The description hypes the story up way more than is dementated here and I'd be curious to see how volume two escalates things but right now there is kind of just nothing.
Shavonne is a poor ghostwriter who dreams of getting out of a bad neighborhood. After breaking up with his current FWB, he starts running into a neighbor named Lewellyn, who he finds off-putting immediately. The author/artist did a wonderful job making the tension palpable in the scenes with Lewellyn. I was in a constant state of anxiety reading this, as Lewellyn’s demeanor would change on a dime.
This was a super fun (and tense) read and I’ll absolutely be reading the next volume!
The storytelling and the build up have me giggling, it's just so good. It's playing with the reader, keeping me guessing and on the edge of my seat, letting me assume something only to throw out a hint that maybe things aren't what they seem. Or are they? I love it. Shavonne is down to earth, takes little shit, but has a brain and knows there are some battles he can't win. Lewellyn is delightful, in all of his facets. But what is it about all the onions???
😭 this is so sad. Shavonne and Lewellyn aren’t merely just neighbours turned lovers, their past goes way back and unfortunately only Lewellyn remembers it. I don’t know what happened to make Shavonne lose his memories but it must’ve been so painful for Lewellyn, who transformed from a “dog into a human just to look for Shavonne. To think that Lewellyn was named by Shavonne, because before the name Lewellyn he had no name. He was a prisoner or an experiment, never knowing anything outside the four walls of his cell. And Shavonne was the only person who had given him warmth, so he clung onto Shavonne, loved him and was afraid of being abandoned by him. Lewellyn was moulded into life by Shavonne. Alas what they had could never last and when Shavonne said that he had never loved Lewellyn, the moment Lewellyn gave up resisting the guards was heartbreaking.
The pacing is good and the oddities surrounding Shavonne and Lewellyn’s current relationship were explained one by one as we learned about their shared past. There are still unanswered questions such as, just how exactly did Lewellyn get out of prison? Why was he even there in the first place? Why did Shavonne’s doctor “friend keep tabs on him? So many more loose ends. I hope the author will be able to answer all these in the next season.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for this digital ARC
This review is only for the English translation of Volume 1 of Murderous Lewellyn's Candlelit Dinner
I did not know about this being already published and I went into this story expecting a mystery thriller as it was tagged as such. The mystery element is pretty low and most of the story revolves around 2 characters Shavonne, a broke ghost writer struggling to earn money and Lewellyn, possibly a serial killer who is obssessed with onions.
Now, most of my issue stems from not knowing this is a series leading to romance between these two characters and maybe we will get more backstory and reasons for the characters' behaviour in next volumes, based on what we have got here it was uncomfortable. This could be something that works for others who wouldn't mind weird dynamics and characters who ignore every red flag. If this was only a thriller, i could see how the book successfully creates a creepy unlikeable character but volume 1 still fails to create a dynamic start to a series with most of it's settings all being on the apartment floor of the two characters.
started off this story and almost dropped it because of the fucking nail fungus and weird ass plot 😭 straight up felt like a fever dream.
However, I’m so glad I stayed for post chapter 30ish, because after the baseline is set up, this Webtoon becomes a heart wrenching tale and really goes for your heart.
I now see why all the reviews and comments were raving about this. I’m not even bothered by the nails anymore 🥹 (mainly bc the author stopped drawing it like a fucking disease 😭 thank you for changing it to black nails, I already got the point)
I know this seems like a shitpost in the beginning but PLEASE give this Webtoon an honest chance if you want a good revenge story and want to root for two tragic and broken characters who find hope in their dark worlds with each other.
The setting of the world is so grim and both of them were born into extreme unfortunate circumstances. There is no traditional sense of a “hero or a saviour. It’s literally two lost souls finding a home within their bond. Both characters have a strong backbone and I like that MC wasn’t a damsel in distress and could fend for himself.
Anyways. Wow, this was a tragic story throughout, I’m a little shocked that this ended up with a and I was totally not prepared for it lol. that was the real plot twist all along haha but I’m glad for it, because this would’ve ended up in a “depression in a book bookshelf otherwise 😭
I will say though, I do think the possible alternative ending being left on that open note aka a

(A bit of a language review rant, because I’m learning Korean at the moment and I’m genuinely learning whenever I read webtoons in Korean lol)
So I read the Webtoon version, not novel version, in both English and Korean (swapped between the two pending on my understanding of the Korean lol).
The English translations were done extremely well. The tones and implied subtexts were translated and rephrased well, even slang and certain phrases from the Korean version would use an English equivalent rather than a direct translation and it makes it flow more naturally.
Because this setting is like fictional 1800-1900s Europe, I find the English version more fitting to the setting, however I do enjoy being able to read the story in the native language.
Small details like how the MC would speak in polite/formal grammar to the ML when he first met “the dog (ML) while all the other guards spoke immediately in 반말 (informal) already showed how MC viewed ML as a human and not a “dog right off the bat. It was only once the MC felt like he gained ML’s trust properly, that he switched into informal and even then, he never used swears at him and would still often speak to him with respect.
Something like this in unfortunately not translated well into English, both from a grammar perspective but also from a social-culture perspective on how Asian hierarchy is. But I do appreciate this detail a lot as it’s reflective of how the characters view each other.
The change in the grammar is also shown with the difference in Lewellyn being illiterate in the beginning, where he only knows how to swear and speak informally because that is how his abusers spoke to him, vs later, when he gets more educated (taught by the MC of course). He speaks to Shevon in a polite tone most of the time, even throughout the Webtoon and after they got together, indicating his level of respect for him.

Another detail I appreciate is how details that may seem insignificant get brought up later, and just when you think you’ve been wounded emotionally enough those details come back to rub the salt in your wound 💀
Side note I really appreciate the English translators giving TLDRs and summaries (and theories lol) at the end of the chapters, it really makes you view the whole story and how you interpret it in a different light.
Anyway I really enjoyed this Webtoon, I’m curious to see how true it stuck to the novel it was adapted from, although the chapters are much longer than an average webtoon’s, I felt like 90 chapters wasn’t enough to really cover everything the story wanted to set out nor tie up the loose ends and plot holes. I may read the novel another time, when I feel like I’m emotionally ready to deal with tragedy again 😅
At first, I didn’t know what to think. I was getting Killing Stalking flashbacks and was hoping it wouldn’t be true. I was not expecting the psychological horror/thriller aspect to be front and centre, but omg was it good. This story really should be marketed as such though since the romance tag being forefront doesn’t fully describe the main plot line and changes initial perceptions of the story going into it blind like I did.
Art was beautiful. Character relations and dynamics were so interesting. Plot twists were *chef’s kiss*. Ending was perfect. I love how everything since the beginning began coming together, tying up all the loose ends and answers all questions .
Thank you to NetGalley and Yen Press for my auto approval!!
This is such a weird and interesting story and I’m invested. I feel like Shavonne is not as freaked out as he should be. Like things just work out for Lewellyn and he just kind of ignores it. Like he seems to be worried about him but not to the degree he needs to me. I have a lot of questions but my number 1 is why do Lewellyn‘s fingernails look so ragged, why does he always peel onions but never smell like them, and why does he get away with everything.
I mean th idea is fine but the whole story is just so messy. I get that the author wanted to build suspense but it just ended up being a badly executed idea with one-dimensional characters that were written to seem deep but really are not.
It was just plain boring.
The artstyle was fine though, no problems on that front.
I'd like to send my thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for providing a free pdf version of this manga in exchange for an honest review.
Ooh okay this was very mysterious! I really liked the characters and the strange onion obsession that kept reoccurring. One volume was not enough! I feel like I only got a taste of something delicious and now I want a whole slice.
Started off really well, kept you on the edge with the mystery. However, as the story progressed into the flashback, plot holes popped up and it just got a bit cliche(?)
