This edition has been edited and updated with an extended ending. The original version was published in January 2014.
(Please check the date on all reviews. Any review before October 2023 is for the FIRST edition. The extended ending of the second edition (with the skull cover) makes this "not the same book". While I stand by the original ending and didn't touch it, there is an extended ending in the new edition that changes things to the point that many of the earlier reviews no longer make sense and don't apply to this NEW edition.)
A Dark Fairy Tale...
What would you do for freedom? For salvation? How much evil would you commit to end your own suffering?
August Corinth is a vampire cursed to kill and suffer the pain of his victims every night, until he can find the one soul who can resist his thrall and break the curse--his blood mate. He thought she was a myth, a fairy tale, but Nicolette Rose very much exists.
The problem is, she¡¯s in love with her husband.
There are no lines August won¡¯t cross to possess her, to claim her as his own. She will not move or sway him with those pretty tears. He¡¯s suffered for centuries, and he will do whatever he must to make it stop--even if it means taking away everything and everyone she¡¯s ever loved.

Kitty began publishing in early 2010 with her bestselling, COMFORT FOOD.
Nicolette is happily married to Dominic, until she has a chance meeting with a 600 year-old vampire, August. August recognizes her as the one woman that can save him from the curse of vampirism by willingly consenting to become his blood mate. Of course, Nicolette has no interest in giving him her consent initially.
August sets a plan in motion to woo Nicolette and obtain her consent one way or another. In time, Nicolette and August develop feelings for one another, leaving Nicolette feeling torn between the two men. Questioning her marriage, her feelings, and even her own sanity, she attempts to make sense of her new reality.
I enjoyed this story, but am hoping that there is a sequel. Not quite as steamy as most of the other books I've read from this author, I had just gotten to a point in the story where I thought that everything was going to work out...and then the book ended, leaving me wondering what became of this taboo trio.
Ripping apart soul mates is so wrong I don't even know where to being. Ms. Thomas does another mind-fuckery on me in this story. I come to expect a little bit of twisting things the wrong way yet making it kind of right. Ms. Thomas doesn't disappoint in this one.
Nicole and Dominic have a marriage most would kill to have. Even after ten years, they are still frolicking in a honeymoon phase. When Nicole catches the eye of August, it's all over. She's the one who can break his curse of killing every night. In order to get Nicole, August does some horrible things.
This begs the question of does the means justify the ends? I'm all twisted up inside as I feel for August yet I'm also sad for Nicole. Dominic is just caught in the middle. If this could be m¨¦nage it would make a happily ever after for me. However, Ms. Thomas doesn't do happily ever afters and this story is yet another evidence of her dark mind. The conflicts she brings up in this story are good. They are no good answers and no easy way to make it work. This is representative of real life in the sense that sometimes, there are no good alternatives. While it is much lauded for win-win scenarios; the reality is there are more lose-lose scenarios. This story explores every avenue to make it work and I can't help but feel that everyone is screwed. There is not a single person or vampire in this story who is satisfied or happy.
I like this kind of book. I'm all torn up inside and I can't think of a way out. This kind of book makes me desperately think of solutions only to see Ms. Thomas knock each one of them down. When we hit rock bottom, she continues to drag us through the sludge. I don't know how this story is going to end and I enjoy that uncertainty.
There is minimal sex in this story which is atypical of Ms. Thomas. What is in here is disturbingly sensuality mixed with death and sense of wrongness. The way August manipulates and blackmails Nicole is erotically intoxicating for me. I like it and keep thinking, take me! But seriously, this story is tug of war between lust and love. Which one will win out? Sometimes, the time is just not right and there are no good answers. Recommended for those who enjoy dark erotica with a bite.
*I received this book as a review copy in return for an honest review
3.5 "I just can't bare the ending" star:'| I love August and he didn't done anything wrong!!! Okay well honestly he did something bad but he was doing it for a reason and also he was the victim until the end and it's just sad. I hate Dominic and Nicole! so unfair *sobs*
I think what's compelling about the story was that even though August did something wrong he felt sorry for it after all he's a good guy forced to do wrong. he's like Ty from the book Stolen. and I think its more powerful and easy to sympathize characters that do wrong for a right reason and for me August is the victim here. Victim from his curse:'(
This is what I get from reading dark books.. so fucked up:(
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one, considering the other Kitty Thomas book I read, Comfort Food, was just so-so for me. Her writing has really improved since then, making for a much better reading experience. Plus, I love vampires.
Nicolette was a pretty likeable heroine, and not-so-easily swayed by the vampire's wealth and good looks. And she wasn't annoying, or pointlessly innocent. Her husband, Dominic, actually seemed like a dick until a certain point in the story. I didn't care too much for him, but I appreciated that his character wasn't shunted out of the way by some deus ex machina. August, the vampire, was so well-written. He was the perfect combination of nice and evil.
The ending? I actually quite loved it. Chilling, tense, and a little hot. This book gets to stay on my Kindle.
"How can you be such a monster?" "I don't know, Nicolette. After centuries of killing people, it sort of sticks. What the hell else was I ever going to be?"
No, hate does not describe what I feel for it. I slogged through it, hoping for something redemptive to happen, but it only went from bad to worse. I get that this was supposed to be a "dark romance," but there was nothing romantic about it.
The writing wasn't horrible, I'll give it that, but I hated the story so much that I couldn't even enjoy the author's style. Obviously, this story isn't for everyone, but I felt that even some of the explanations were hastily thrown together, implausible at best, as if the author didn't have the patience to try to better explain her plot.
And, of course, the ending.
I can't say too much about the ending, since I was forewarned by several other reviewers that it wouldn't end the way one might think it should. And honestly, I don't mind unconventional finishes, but this? This was not only unsatisfactory, it was...ugh.
What would you do when you find the cure to your curse after centuries of suffering, and it nearly becomes a curse in itself? Having read Blood Mate years ago,i was eager to see what Kitty Thomas added to this dark beauty. I know i enjoyed it the first time, but hearing she added not one,but three epilogues, made me wonder¡. Did she give an insight into their dynamic once they¡¯d solved their problems? And trust me,there were a lot of those!! Because August may have found the cure to his curse in Nicolette, she d¨ªd have a life! She had a husband she loved, parents that were close, and a job she enjoyed. Simply ¡°convincing¡± Dominic he didn¡¯t love her anymore wasn¡¯t the solution he thought it¡¯d be¡. And the further he got,the bigger the mess became, even when Nicole agreed to his terms. Even when he promised her she could still be with Dominic¡.. Because she loved her husband with all her heart,he was her soulmate, and giving August what he needed felt like cheating. Luckily for August,Kitty was there to help them find a solution. One they could all live with¡. And as a bonus,i got baked cookies, and they were exactly what i needed!
This was not worth 5 dollars. This was not a bad book, it just could've been better. (And five dollars is a lot (for me) so I mainly go to the library).
That ending though....that did not appease me. It didn't fulfill what it could have been. It's potential was not reached. (I'm not sure if the ending counts as a HEA so if you want to know, feel free to PM me.)
I did like the idea of a blood mate though. Now that was what peaked my interest. A vampire needs to feed until death every night and use his power of thrawl (spell?) mind control to control his victims. As a result, this makes the vampire even hungrier. If someone was able to not be affected by his thrawl (spell?) then they could form a blood bond and help the vamp by bearing more bood than usual.
I think that the characters were too rushed and some things had more potential to be more of a paradox or something that could leave someone in a state of thought. I think this book could have been more. It was still okay though. I do believe that I will try more books by her in the future.
I've never been a Kitty Thomas fan but I really enjoyed this. It was dark and unique. August a conflicted but ruthless vampire meets one woman who he can not mind control. He schemes to get her to leave her husband of 10 years because she is his only salvation from being a bloody thirsty predator. He doesn't expect the push back he gets from a woman who truly loves her husband.
Blood Mate is the newest release from Kitty Thomas, who is my favorite author, so if I sound biased and not totally objective, there you have it!
Blood Mate is the story of a vampire, cursed to a pretty miserable existence, unless he can find the one woman who can complete him, and become...his Blood Mate.
He never finds her, so the book is...I kid, I kid! Suffice it to say, they meet, there are complications, and is everything as it seems? Blood Mate threw me for a loop and gave me something unexpected at least two times, and surprised me in a good way.
Our heroine is very loyal, and she might be a little bit hardheaded. Its a trope I could stand to see less of in all sorts of fiction, Erotica, literary, dark, BDSM, but she is pretty good, and I forgave her for being dumb at least twice. Plus, I do dumb stuff all the time, so I guess its fine, right?
August is our vampire. He doesn't want to keep killing people. He's a good guy, or was, and wants to be again. He is powerful and immortal.
There are other good characters in the book that you are best off encountering on your own with no spoilers from me, and the plot is interesting and twisty. As usual there is darkness here, but its not as dark as Comfort Food, or The Last Girl, I feel confident if you liked previous works by Kitty, you'll like this one too.
Lets talk about the sex in the book! There isn't a lot, but what there is is excellent stuff. If you've liked previous books like Comfort Food, and Mafia Captive, its similar. Big Sky, it is not.
Overall, I really liked it.
***Review copy provided by the author in return for an honest review***
I've been a big fan of Kitty's work but Nicole's character has aggravated the hell out of me. 80% through and were I August, I'd have killed her myself halfway through it, and said curse be damned. I'll finish the story out of my respect for the author, but this has been the first time that I've struggled to continue reading a book due to completely hating a character's personality.
Update: I finally finished the book but my rating doesn't change and the ending left me confused. If anyone can shed some light on what happened it would be much appreciated.
Here we are yet again, with a new kind of "fucked-up-ness" that Kitty Thomas generously presents to us!
As usual, I loved it!
Which is disturbing and may suggest that something is terribly wrong with me, but let's not dwell on that, shall we?
Our story starts off with the introduction of August Corinth, a tormented and terribly lonely vampire, who was changed 600 years ago, against his will. There is a myth that says there is one individual out there for every vampire ever to live, who can resist their "vampire thrall" and keep them out of their heads. These individuals are their "blood mates". If a vampire can find his blood mate and persuade her into giving herself to him, they can bond, which would benefit it 2 ways: He would have an immortal mate forever and would never have to kill anyone to feed again, since his mate would feed him regularly.
August despises himself for having to kill people, to control his hunger, so he longs for the thought of having a blood mate some day and being free of this curse.
When he meets Nicole Rose, who have been happily married to Dominic Rose for 10 years, he realizes that she is to be her blood mate. The knowledge that she has already found her soulmate doesn't even bother him. He has plans to get her to run to his arms...
I have to admit that with his first appearance in the book, August Corinth disgusted me. He was such a douchebag, a compeletely self-centered and utterly annoying creature. At first...
Then he started to show his extremely emotional side, which of course melted me and softened me against him in mere seconds. He is aware of the various traumas Nicole experiences at his hands and feels guilt about it, trying to make it better with his every action. He respescts her every decision and I have to admit if I were him, I wouldn't have! I wouldn't have showed her that much weakness, that much dependency. Yet he always gave her the upper hand!
He¡¯s not a romantic hero, but that doesn't stop you from empathizing with him and feeling incredibly sorry for him.
The whole problem with the situation was, in my opinion at least, the fact that Nicole, was TOO DAMN STUBBORN TO LET GO AND FREAKIN' DEAL WITH IT! To be fair, she was very loyal to her husband and very much in love with him, so she fought August back fiercely the whole time. She felt guilty and cried a lot (A LOT) because of the feelings that overwhelmed her, the feelings of lust and love that their blood bond with August caused. It really annoyed me, because after some point I realized that I was rooting for August. *sigh*
And the husband... The goddamn husband. I know he's supposed to be the clueless and innocent one in this story. I know that. But I still hated him with every fiber of my body. I couldn't help myself...
Especially in the last %25 of the book, his snappy remarks and the overinflated esteem of his annoyed the shit out of me! I wanted him dead so much, it was intolerable... Alas, that haven't been the case...
The best thing about this book is the fact that the plot moves fast! Like, really REALLY fast! You can never guess what will happen next and you never get bored.
I'll admit that I enjoyed it immensely, even with the little raging fits Nicole and his freakin' husband put me in. Sue me.
But the ending...
I didn't expect that. I didn't like it. It wasn't even remotely close to what I wanted. I flipped the pages back and forth a few times to persuade myself that THAT was the freakin' ending!
This one right here is a very accurate depiction of it:
I cried. Yeah, I cried reading a Kitty Thomas book and I don't feel any shame OKAY?
When I started reading Blood Mate, I had no idea what to expect. Was it paranormal? Yeah, I guess¡ I mean, it¡¯s about a vampire, so I guess it qualifies. Was it a romance? No, not really. Was it erotica? Ish? Was it dark erotica? Sort of, but it¡¯s not actually as dark as you¡¯d expect. So what is it? It¡¯s exactly what it says it is: a dark fairy tale.
I found, reading it, that when I took it at literal face value, I didn¡¯t really get what was going on, and I didn¡¯t like it much. But I took an Olympics-induced break about halfway through and spent a few days thinking about the story, about my expectations, and about whether I was reading it properly. I kept going back to that subtitle, a dark fairy tale.
Subtitles are important.
When I started reading Blood Mate as a fairy tale, it transformed. So I went back to the beginning and started it again, approaching it the way I would a myth or epic poem. August is full of that classic, epic arrogance and selfishness, character traits that seem out of place in a modern story but fit right in an epic tale.
(Epics are full of these douchey dude characters who manipulate and destroy ¡ª often specifically destroying the lady characters ¡ª and then bitch and moan when everything doesn¡¯t turn out perfectly for them. Often, it takes the intervention of the gods to rework the human ending and pitch it in favor of the douchey dude. Hey, Odysseus, I¡¯m looking at you.)
From his first appearance in Blood Mate, August Corinth typifies the epic douchebag. He is remarkably self-centered, and his response to every hint of adversity is self-pity and a fundamental expectation that his happiness trumps everything. He is, then, in addition to being an actual vampire with the fangs and the blood sucking, an emotional vampire, toxic in his selfishness, forever taking, demanding everything out of life. The emotional vampirism goes one further as August uses his bond with Nicole to remove her painful emotions after the various traumas she experiences at his hands.
He¡¯s not a damn romantic hero, and I don¡¯t think he¡¯s cast as one.
On the flip side, there¡¯s Nicole, who¡¯s kind of a cipher, clinging to seemingly insignificant pieces of identity as she lives in the shadow of first one then another man who claims her as mate. With her husband, Nicole clings to her unnecessary job and preference for sweet coffee drinks. With August, Nicole clings to her identity as Dominic¡¯s beloved and struggles to maintain her sense of self as all her emotions are leeched away.
If you try to read the story in a straightforward and modern way, expecting the kinds of things you usually expect, you¡¯ll probably be disappointed. There isn¡¯t really a resolution for August, Nicole, or Dominic. August doesn¡¯t exactly grow in self-awareness, and Nicole doesn¡¯t achieve any clear peace or positive reward for all her sacrifice and struggle. And Dominic¡ I think maybe that guy¡¯s more of a winner than either August or Corinth.
But, if you abandon your expectations ¡ª more than that, if you actively question why you even have those expectations in the first place ¡ª you¡¯re in for an interesting read and an even more interesting period of reflection after the reading is done. Who is the hero in this book? Who is the victim? Whose path is righteous? Who wins at the end? And, honestly, why do we approach books expecting a clear winner or loser?
I¡¯ll be honest¡ I¡¯m not really sure what the ending of Blood Mate is all about. I¡¯m a reasonably intelligent human being, but the ending ¡ª kind of like the last scene of The Sopranos ¨C leaves a big question mark for readers and refuses to make it easy on us. So what happened and what does it all mean? That¡¯s for you to decide. And isn¡¯t it awesome that you have that kind of power as a reader?
I love Kitty Thomas. I usually don't write reviews. I have a difficult time ordering my thoughts enough to write cohesively, and so much of what is said on the internet can be misconstrued and misunderstood. But....................I love Kitty Thomas. And I have to say something. Not one book of hers has ever let me down. It's more than the fact that I enjoy this genre(though I don't think KT books fit in a genre. they should have their own genre of pure incredibleness). It's her extraordinary writing, the amazing way she expresses what she wants to say. It's the way her books mess with my head, so that even months after reading one, it's still on my mind. It's the fact that every one of her books are completely different (I mean, yes, the theme of ownership and psychological mindf*** is the same, but in every story, the characters are completely different and driven by different motivations. how many times has an author started out great, but the more books you read, the more annoying and repetitive they get? I have never once been bored while reading KT, not even during my many rereads) Blood Mate was no exception. I loved Nicole. She was so realistic! so many, many times, when a book has a villain/anti-hero, the heroine gives in waaaaay too soon. I always want to tell the author- if a creepy/scary guy came up to you in a coffee shop, I sincerely doubt you'd take time to moon over how hot he was. If it were me,I'd get the hell out of there, . And if I were actually taken, I'd like to think that it would take more than a little attention from hot, scary dude to make me forget about the terrible things I witnessed, or my significant other at home. Nicole reacted like an actual, normal human being would in this situation. that's not to say that a person with a different personality might react in a realistically different way. its just that once you create a character, they have to be consistent. Also, Nicole was really human. She had faults, like the rest of us. the truth is, a person cant know what they'd do in a situation till they go through it themselves. I just thought KT made a very brave (and in my opinion, correct) choice making Nicole as strong a character as she did. August is fascinating. He's one of the few sympathetic KT male characters, The ending was perfect.
I am going to start by asking you if you have ever read any of Ms. Thomas¡¯ work. If you have, then you know the intensity she will make you feel, you know the gnawing feeling in your soul as you read the words that she has written, you will know the emotion she will ring out of you while the story unfolds on the pages you so quickly turn ¨C just to see what will happen next. Her writing will make you think, make you feel but most of all, it will make you dig deep into places in your mind/soul you might not have otherwise wanted to go¡ but you will read and walk away feeling¡something.
Nicole is a woman who is living a dream come true. Her husband, Dominic, of ten years is still madly in love with her, adores the ground she walks on, and just devours her every chance he gets. Their relationship is so strong nothing could come between them. Well, that is what Nicole thought until one morning in the coffee shop, she meets a man¡ a mysterious man that will change her life forever. When she sees changes in Dominic that are not his usual self, who does she have to turn to..Will she be able to accept what this man will do to her and Dominic. Can her relationship survive what happens.
Augustine, August, is a very old vampire who has seen many centuries come and go. He has watched the world change right before his eyes, year after year, decade after decade and century after century. He has learned to deal with surviving ¨C at all cost. He has tried everything to end his own life because a life like this means nothing to him¡ unless the curse is true and he can survive and thrive and live again and be hopeful to love again. But what if things do not go as planned. What could possibly go wrong with his plan¡ Everything!
This is a story that broke my heart, gave me hope and had me hoping that everyone got what they deserved. I can¡¯t tell what happened, I can¡¯t tell you if the happy ever after happened, I can¡¯t even tell you who got what. Why, because then I would be giving away the story. But I can tell you that this story will leave you wanting more. You know there is no more to give, but you are hoping that there will be more. You will feel for each character in this story. Even the ones that really do not matter, but you will feel for them just the same. You will keep reading to know what will happened. Then there is a part in the story that had me questioning my own sanity in what I was reading ¨C not in a bad way, actually in a good way¡ The good way because Ms. Kitty had me really paying attention to what I was reading. She grabbed me and did not let me go till the last page¡
August is 600y old vampire. He has to feed every day and every time he feeds he kills a person and that left a terrible burden on his soul and it torments him. Conflict #1: hero who is a monster, but you sympathize with him.
His only hope is finding a blood mate. Blood mate is a person he can't mindcontrol and a person he can feed from forever without needing to kill other people. And after so many years, he found her. It's just that she is happily married. Conflict #2: Nicole loves her husband and doesn't want anything to do with August.
That leaves August in a bit of problem, but he will stop at nothing...even ruining her marriage. Conflict #3: He is a monster we sympathize with, but he is still a monster.
Because he can't make Nicole love him, August mindcontrol her husband. Conflict #4: Dominic, Nicole's husband, is really great guy and you kind of feel bad for Nicole because she got a raw deal. It's not some nice, fated romance with a vampire- she loves another man.
August cares none or that, so he manipulates her into deal she can't possibly come out as a winner, but in times it looks like it's better for her not to come out as one. Conflict #5: Wait, what? I don't know who should I root for here!
Honestly, I loved this. It literally takes reader and pulls you on two different sides, challenge your early allegiances to characters and then makes you regret it. It was what made it so damn intriguing.
But then...story just went downhill. -__- Sigh...I love me some Kitty Thomas, but I have no idea what happened to plot of this novel.
Yeah, that happened. It started good, we were getting to something that promised to be epic culmination, but then the story just fell apart, said "fuck it" and didn't get up. :\ It's like author had no idea what to do with this awesome premise, how to untangle this mess she put her characters through and decided to go with solution that would cover most of possible outcomes. Unfortunately...it didn't work for me at all.
I can't tell you a time when I ever thought Kitty Thomas didn't fully deserve each and every SINGLE star that they ALLOW me to give her! I'm always 10/10 excited to read her books. This latest one (or well revised with a new update) is really good.
I panicked when that loophole came in and d@mn she had me freaking out for a good portion of this book, my heart racing but as always she swooped in and gave me a really good thrill. This updated epilogue is... nice very nice ?
This was amazing and I recommend all to read except maybe the granny from church!
Wow did the epilogue really clinch it for me! I read this back when the epilogue didn¡¯t exist, and I was one of those people left feeling confused. But I love how this turned out, and if you¡¯ve read it before, I recommend a reread! If you haven¡¯t read it before and like vampire romance and dark romance, then you need to read this!
This is an interesting take on vampires. I loved the little twists the story had. It kept me hooked the whole book. The characters are intriguing and I enjoyed the storyline. The epilogues really pulled everything together. Overall a great read.
This book was about a vampire named August who had given up hope that he would ever find a mate that would take away the pain of the kills he had to do when he would suck his victims dry. He was apparently a monk before he was turned into a vampire. Not much else is known about him besides those facts, and the reality of what he becomes after a few days without drinking blood; a dry husk. It had a lot of premise, and it was interesting the way the author chose to take this overly used trope in most contemporary supernatural romance, and I applaud her for that. But why did I give it just 3 stars? Because honestly, the writing was flawless, and it kept my interest long enough to finish the book. It was indeed riveting, and I enjoyed it. But there just wasn't enough character development. I never sympathised with the heroine, she was actually a blank slate and a bit unlikeable. At the beginning the book had a lot of suspense and a bit of a thriller thrown in there, but halfway through the book, the vampire (yes, it's a vampire book if you didn't catch it the first time) didn't seem at all scary, more like he was a pushover despite him having all the power here. Now I know I went in thinking this was going to be one of those scary stories, and it was to a point, at the beginning actually because besides that, it wasn't as interesting. Regardless I'm happy it got me out of my reading stump!
Wow, I got pulled into this one and felt compelled to read until I was finished! Very interesting story and I loved the premise. August was an interesting character: wise, yet impulsive, demanding but also practical in the end. He really made some mistakes in the beginning and Nicollette had no reason to love him but I still wanted her to. Then I really wanted her to love him or show some sort of gratitude for letting Dominic live, then saving him after he almost killed him. I¡¯m glad that they ended up all happy and close at the end. With that being said, I still felt like a scene where she told August she loved him, forgave him and was grateful would have felt like better closure instead of it just being implied.
The part where she thought she was back in the mental hospital and had been there for 3 months that was a dream was a cruel trick. I thought for a minute that August had compelled the doctor and staff and somehow gotten her back in the hospital to disprove her statement that she¡¯d wished she really was delusional and that he¡¯d pop out as soon as she confessed to the doctor that she wanted August to be real. I got excited about that possibility to teach her a lesson, but then the dream ended up being pretty pointless. Also the time that August and Nicollette first have sex felt very cold and unsatisfying to me, not sure why. Maybe I would have preferred that they didn¡¯t have sex until after her husband was turned so it could have had more build up and anticipation. Also a lot of the changes to traditional vampire lore in this case made it a lot less sexy to me, but I enjoyed the creativity and fresh take on the classic vampire story.

Another attempt to read another book from Kitty Thomas. Yes, i want darker story and more erotic kind of romance. Unfortunately, It didn't work for me.
August, the 600-ish years old vampire still in pursue to search his Blood Mate to undo his curse. Nicole is a happy housewife and satisfied woman with her husband, Dominic. Turns out Nicole destined to be his blood mate and August has to find his way to get her agreed to be his.
Damn, for a while Kitty Thomas almost caught me in madness. Is it real or just Nicole's delusion? I have to convince myself that the story is real. August is really a vampire, not just an illusion from Nicole's unsatisfied life. Well-written but boring paced. They're round in circles in some chapters. I kinda hated but poor Nicole... She's in torn between her needs for August and love for Dominic.
I mean, it was not that bad. But i didn't like the premise because in the end, it's way off the point. Nowhere to 'dark'. No raw, needy, lusty sex or whatsoever happen in this book. I thought the story wanted to focus about August and Nicole' bloody relationship. Sigh. The major turn off is the ending. Not kind of 'romance' i expected to be... It just left unfinished.
This is a dark paranormal (vampire) read that features an ancient vampire meeting up with his mate who happens to be happily married to a mortal man. The story encompasses the morality of whether Nicolette will agree to complete the mating ritual with a vampire thus saving her fellow mankind or keep her marriage vows made to her one true love.
I'm a big time fan of Kitty Thomas and usually love her works. She's the type of author who can push my comfort zones to the breaking point but in such a masterful way that I'm a willing victim. That being said this book just didn't do much for me for a few reasons. The one that jumped out at me is the fact this really wasn't overly dark. I had one burning question in regards to August's lifestyle that I dearly would love to ask the author that I personally felt ruined the premise for me but as it's spoiler info I can't post what that was here. Further, there are twists and turns that left me more confused than appreciative. Without giving too much away I just didn't understand how reality and fantasy could be so messed up .....
What started out as strong seemed to become lackluster though I did enjoy that vamps aren't always prone to glimmer when in the sun or sleep in coffins.
Kitty Thomas is one of the few authors who can release a new book and I will immediately buy it without a second thought. This trust has been rewarded by her time and again, but never more thoroughly than now with Blood Mate. It made me question what is real and what is delusion, and what love can mean in the face of eternal suffering.
If I sound like I'm wallowing in purple prose, it's because this book has done such a thorough job of f*cking with my head in the best way possible. Only Kitty Thomas could take a 600 year old vampire looking for the one woman able to resist him so he could make her his own by choice and put a Beauty and the Beast spin on it that compelled me to love and curse him simultaneously. I don't want to say more about what happens, because you need to read it for yourself. All I can say is that if you love Kitty Thomas, you will love this story. It's everything you expect and everything you don't.
Calling this book a romance was a bit of a stretch, in my opinion. It wasn¡¯t erotica, either, so if you are looking for some steamy action, don¡¯t get your hopes up here.
The storyline itself interesting; it was twisted and had promise, and I appreciated that it wasn¡¯t predictable (to me, at least). But there were parts that went on longer than they needed to (for example, a dream she had) without really contributing much to the plot or character development, and after wading through those, I had hoped for a big payoff.
A payoff like, I don¡¯t know, a hot vampire threesome? Or at the very least, some kind of meaningful resolution between the characters and/or development of their relationship.
I got none of these things and I was left feeling like the author had gotten bored with the story and ended it abruptly just when things could have gotten truly interesting.
Kitty Thomas does an amazing job of taking a dark, twisted, and tragic story and adding some romance to it. This is a unique, vampire, love triangle romance that kept me guessing till the end.
This is a dark paranormal romance between a vampire cursed to kill every night (August) and his mate - a human woman (Nicole) who is already happily married. August is desperate to break his curse so he no longer has to kill a human every night. In order to save himself, Nicole's world would need to change entirely. He wants to be a good man, but the lines between right and wrong begin to blur in his desperation to convince Nicole to be his mate. He will do anything to get her to agree.
I truly love paranormal books that describe possession, mates and the need for that mate. Though this possession was towards the darker more uncomfortable side as the mate was already married and the vampire was not going to be denied. this scenario had potential, though the author, for me, felt incomplete and forced. I had hopes for this to have a naughtier outcome and my mind while reading said, "oh I can see where this is going". When in the end did not go there at all and was somewhat disappointing.
