I received an early eBook copy of "How to Write a Howling Good Story" as a Kickstarter Backer reward, and it was well worth the wait. Wulf Moon's playful yet informative writing style grabbed my attention from the very first words, and his anecdotes and examples throughout the book made me feel as though I were getting to know him face-to-face. Very few, if any, books on writing that I've read have felt so personal.

The book is divided into three sections: story structure, writing craft, and the business of writing. Having taken many of Moon's master classes, some of the first two sections felt familiar to me, but having the chance to review them in writing helped deepen my understanding of his Super Secrets. The third part, which covers topics as broad as sharing your work with others and how to write a short story cover letter, was by far the most impactful part for me: I can think of no other book that goes into these topics with such concise yet sufficient detail for new and emerging authors. If you wish to be a professional writer, Moon's Super Secrets will help you get there.

My one complaint is that a few chapters included in Moon's "Illustrated Super Secrets: Volume 1" weren't included in this book. Although he still reviews these concepts, I fear it might feel incomplete for someone who hasn't already read his illustrated guide. When the biggest fault in a book is the fact it isn't bigger, you know it's a damn good book, and trust me, this book offers so much quality material that any writer will find something in Moon's Super Secrets that will help them grow greater.

"How to Write a Howling Good Story" is an engaging and instructive guide to writing--both the business and the craft--that any writer, new or established, should read from beginning to end. I truly believe this book will become a staple on any writer's bookshelf with the potential and depth to be read again and again.

Wulf Moon isn't just offering you a dry textbook, but teaching you story structure through story form. And teaching it well. I've never read another book like it.

It made me laugh out loud and tear up in parts, making his lessons that much more enjoyable and memorable. Moon has taught me things I've never seen in any other writing books. He's showing me not only how to write working stories, but stories that sell, stories that rise above the rest and make dreams happen.

I've seen my writing improve tremendously in such a short amount of time.
If you're one who does smart reading, smart practice, and who wants to take their writing to the next level, then I highly recommend this book.

This guy loves stories. Deeply. You can tell by the way he talks about them in this book. And that love has driven him to build skills invaluable to any hopeful writer, and he passes them on. Step-by-step. He can tell how to win contests, get sales, and construct wonderful tales.

I can't see how anyone could read this without feeling like their IQ just raised. If you're willing to work these techniques will work.

I finished this book feeling well-informed and inspired to write. Moon has a solid writing career and this feels like getting secret tips from a real insider. This book is packed with so much great info, from writing techniques to formatting (I’ve been submitting stories for over a decade and was shocked to find out my story formatting was off and I had no idea!), to how to handle feedback from writing groups and peers. This is now in my top five books on craft. I especially loved the revealing bits about Moon’s own life and struggles, and it's clear nothing has been handed to him...he’s worked his butt off for every success he’s had. Not only is the book filled with immense writing wisdom, but it’s delivered in such a friendly relatable tone, you’ll be entertained while you learn. Highly recommend this to any writer who wants to further hone his or craft.

Such a great resource

This book is more valuable than gold! Such an amazing resource for writers. 10/10 can not recommend enough. I’m glad I got the kindle version. But I need one I can write in so I ordered a hard copy too! Can’t wait to physically flip those pages 🔥

I received an advance Kickstarter copy of Wulf Moon’s How to Write a Howling Good Story, and I’ve already finished the book.
I’ve read a lot of dry writing books in my time, and this book is not one of those. It’s moist, chewy, and delicious. Every bite gave me practical writing advice I can use right now, flavored with entertaining anecdotes, witty sayings, and laugh-out-loud jokes.
I devoured this book and immediately found myself turning out good quality stories at a pace I’d only dreamed of before.
And I can have my cake and eat it too. Once I finished the book, I easily turned to sections I wanted to see again using the very-well-organized table of contents.
Now my Christmas list for my writer friends is taken care of for this year—I’m going to give them all a copy of How to Write a Howling Good Story.

Wulf has written an excellent primer on concocting the necessary ingredients to make a great story along with helpful hints on keeping in touch with your creative muse. I particularly enjoyed his advice to writers about continuing to create new content rather than editing the same old story over and over again. This is a trap which writers tend to fall into easily! The book is written in practical, concise terms with plenty of examples of his concepts. A real winner for writers looking to up their game!

This is one of the most comprehensive “how to write books on the market. Whether an established writer, emerging, or brand new to the craft, Wulf provides answers and guidance to be your very best. I’ve taken classes from Wulf and this book is destined to be the most dog-eared in my library.

Emerging author here. I received this book via Wulf Moon’s kickstarter campaign for it, which I was glad to support as a member of the writing community. If I’m being honest, reading *yet another craft book* had become procrastination for me. So, I read it skeptical that I’d learn anything new, fearful that I’d be missing something if I didn’t, AND hopeful because of the buzz about the success Wulf Moon’s mentees have had when applying his methods.

My reservations were 100% wrong. This book punches far above its weight. Picture Lisa Cron’s Story Genius meets Larry Brooks Story Engineering meets James Scott Bell’s The Mental Game of Writing. Wulf writes in a conversational style, like you’re sitting across from him enjoying coconut squares and coffee. He’s brilliant, accessible, mindful, and kind. I enjoyed his personal nuggets depicting the good, bad, and ugly of his childhood and the landmarks of his remarkable writer’s journey.

He has divided the book into three sections: 1) The Principles of Story Structure, 2) Writing Craft, and 3) Belief Determines Reality.

Section One covered what I expected in a clear, down-to-earth manner AND included interesting and new perspectives. I came away with a more nuanced view of a protagonist’s heart of hearts desire and a new concept *the magic sword that a protagonist needs to attain her heart of hearts. It’s a figurative sword (knowledge, skill, tool, or object) that must be either obtained or, if already in possession, learned to wield. Including this aspect of story more intentionally will strengthen my stories.

In Section Two, Wulf discusses craft techniques I was somewhat familiar and skilled with (e.g., POV, backstory, dialogue, senses, *kill your darlings* etc.) and provides actionable tips for more compelling storytelling.

Section Three, about belief and professionalism, discusses relationships with other writers (and our writer selves) and provides proven advice for self-management, critique groups, and submitting to contests and publications. It’s gold.

From this day forward I will recommend this book first to writers of any level of experience desiring to develop craft and professionalism.

The Super Secrets of Writing Work!

I credit Wulf Moon's Super Secrets of Writing for helping me grow from an enthusiastic amateur to an award-winning author in 18 months. Let me tell you a story:

I was writing alone and unafraid and getting absolutely nowhere. Agents weren't even bothering to respond to my novel queries. So I switched gears and started writing short stories and found this little contest called Writers of the Future (I didn't know at the time that WotF is the biggest speculative fiction talent search in the world. Thousands of entries every quarter.). The contest has an associated forum which is where I found Wulf Moon's Super Secrets thread. That thread is where he first developed the Super Secrets found in How to Write a Howling Good Story.

There was GOLD in those forum pages. And the Super Secrets of Writing were easy to read and fun to learn. So I dug in and studied. Through smart practice (which Moon talks about), my writing started to level up. I made my first short story sale within a year. More pro sales quickly followed. Then, 18 months after I started studying the Super Secrets of Writing, I won Writers of the Future and was published in Volume 39 (May 2023) with my short story "Death and the Taxman."

And it never would have happened if I hadn't studied Wulf Moon's Super Secrets - which are all now contained in this fun and easy-to-read book: How to Write a Howling Good Story

Needless to say, but I'm gonna say it anyway: 100% recommend!

I had heard about the kickstarter to make this book a reality for a while. Decided to purchase it and it's been a really amazing tool for me as a writer. In the first few chapters, it caused me to reevaluate my series in a new light and made me want to really give my protagonist a strong Heart's Desire and a Magic Sword. For five years, Save The Cat! Writes a Novel has been how I've planned out my novels and this book pairs with it very nicely. On it's own, I think the book would lead anyone to write a more amazing novel. It's a quick read and I was a little shocked at how fun it was to go through. Moon's writing is very digestible and he always incorporates some kind of humor to go with it. I really do believe that this book will help me achieve (at least) a semi-finalist position in the Writer's of the Future competition next year. Looking forward to reading it again and I would recommend this to anyone. Might even plan on getting this book as a Christmas gift for the writer's in my life. Excited to see what else Moon has to offer!

The content is top notch, from story structure to writing mechanics and pro tips Wulf has learned along the way, and yet as rich as the material is, Moon masterfully weaves in stories of his own, hooking you in from the very opening and never dialing back his engaging style and enjoyable wit. This is the only book on writing, by the way, that's ever had me genuinely laughing out loud: Oh, the scrolls that can fill all the rotten names ever conjured by new authors! Oh, the humanity of Bob, as you know! Don't get what I'm talking about? Then read the book and have a good laugh (or change your ways, you darling offender =).

Whether you're a new writer or veteran, this book has something for you. Buy it. Read it. Apply it.

What are you waiting for?

I am 75% through this writing tool and find this very useful. It contains a number of suggestions from how to structure your story to how to submit queries to publishers. I started using these lessons in my current WIP which I will be entering in a contest. So far it has helped me improve this story’s ending and has sparked my Kraken to generate ideas for my next wip. I look forward to using these techniques on future stories.

This is the best writing craft book I've read. Wulf Moon gives clear, concise writing instruction in a fun, easy-to-read format with tons of examples from pop culture and his own experiences. He's upfront and honest about the challenges of the writing world and the pitfalls in stories while still filling the book with encouragement. I marked several sections as "what to read when I feel like giving up." This book is a must have for every writer's shelf.

This is one of the few books on writing that goes over formatting and cover pages while also being an enjoyable read. I wasn't going to give it a review originally, but I really can't stand how few books there are that go over these things. I'm particularly bad at formatting and it’s difficult to find any help on this subject. So, this book can do worlds of good to new writers out there. I’ll likely be going back over it myself in the near future. I wish I had found it twenty years ago.

While much of the information was information I knew, Wulf gave it new life, like looking in the same room through a new window. In addition, the new tidbits he tosses out were invaluable to me and made the book more than worth the price.

I will definitely be coming back to reread this. I highly recommend it.

I've used Wulf Moon's precepts for over five years and advanced my success as an author more in that time than in the previous three decades. Now all his concepts are in one place. Read this book. Practice the methods. The only thing you have to lose is your rejection rate.
