I don’t know if I appreciate learning new things about myself. Bonding with Berklak has been eye-opening, but I might be a tiny bit terrified by it, because suddenly I have more magic than I’m supposed to, and now I kind of understand why other necromancers have rampaged across thyr. I’m not saying I’m going to start leaving a trail of bodies behind me, but I’m not saying I’m incapable of it either. And that might have me a tiny bit worried.
Berklak:
My necromancer is worried. I don’t know what's going on in that beautiful head of his, but his heart beats in the bond between us, and something is stressing him. I’ll get him to talk it out, and then we’ll make a plan, and somehow we’ll figure out what is happening in Fasgard and the Underthyr. But first, I’m going to make sure Lawton relaxes for at least a minute and takes a few deep breaths. Nothing is so bad that we don’t have time for a little self-care.
I Went on an Adventure and All I Got Was This Barbarian Orc is a five chapter serial fantasy adventure with a light-hearted, fun TTRPG vibe. Expect big magic, lots of cuddles, plenty of steam, and a team of characters that might not get a natural 20 on every roll, but they make up for it with creative solutions to both magical and mundane problems.
Jennifer Cody lives in Small Midwestern Town, USA, aka the sticks of Kansas. She has three kids and a Beardo she loves. Her sleep schedule is weird, so messages sent at midnight usually get answered relatively promptly. She reads all kinds of mm romance and urban fantasy, but her favorites are gay-for-you, small-town romances and over the top urban fantasy romances. Her own writing doesn’t always reflect her reading preferences, but mostly it does. She writes what she wants to read and reads extensively because she’s an addict. To books, obviously. And caffeine because sleep is for other people.
I totally loved it! Seriously, I have no words to express how much I'm loving this series. My only complaint is that it was too short!
Dear author, you've managed to make someone (i.e., me) who doesn't like long books, want this book to be long!
I need more of this story. Not only that they complete the main quest and defeat whoever caused this problem, I also want to see a bit of Berklak and Law's day-to-day life. That they have a family (the scene meeting Frost's nephews and cousins was very beautiful)
Another great addition to this 5 part serial crack fantasy tale. this chapter is needed. It advances the story well and more is learned about the members of the party and more clues to the magical mystery are revealed. Those are very important but it's also needed for it's lightness. It still is 100% within the feel for the serial but chapter 3 had some more serious themes and a fair bit of darkness. Chapter 4 brings more love, steam, comraderie, humor, family, mystery,
I highly recommend this serial to anyone who like the fun involved with TTRPG gaming mixed with romance. It's a serial so should be read in order.
This one didn’t have the action of the others, but it was still fun seeing them advance through the mines and meet Frost’s family. We’re making progress with n the main plot as well as the romance!! I can’t wait for the final chapter!!
Fabulously entertaining penultimate chapter! loved it
Rating: 4.75🌈
Heading towards the end of this crack fantasy adventure and I find it hard to believe Cody will be able to wrap it all up in the next chapter.
There’s a lot here to take in, more information and plain ol magical stuff about the mystery of the evil miasma that’s threatening Fasgard and the Underthyr, the darkness that started the quest and the gang out on their journey.
Cody gives us more road trip puzzles to solve , entertaining dwarven family dynamics, the emotional ramifications of the deepening new bond between Lawton and Berklak, and revelations of what might be behind the female animosity that’s causing such suffering and chaos across the land. It’s one wild roll of the dice after another as the group interpersonal relationships form new romances and hopes for future adventures.
I can’t wait to see what happens next. And just a note! I love the names here, especially the towns. This is a fabulous example of otherworldly names done right! They fit, they sound astoundingly familiar yet not, and as though they fit in this world. Love them.
The adventure continues with sweetness and intrigue!
Awww, this chapter was adorable. We do get more intrigue in the form of seeing why and how the miasma exists/spreads but mostly this chapter was getting to see everyone be happy (which I loved). We get to meet Frost’s family, who are hilarious, and dwarves in general who have a very interesting way of dealing with strangers. Plus Lawton got some great news which really made my heart warm. These characters are genuinely so kind and good (in the true sense, rather than an arbitrary morality sense) they make me happy every time I read read about them. They’re just so fun to read and the world that Cody is creating is wonderful full of interesting things and people. I can’t wait for the next chapter but I’m also really not wanting this adventure to end or to have to say goodbye to such awesome characters.
The quest chasing the magical miasma takes them to Drokafar and then back to the surface at King’s Crossing. This episode doesn’t have any danger but it does involve some heavy negotiations and a surprising antidote to the effects of the dark magic. These characters are so much fun! I adore Lawton and Berklak and am seriously enjoying watching their bond get stronger. They are so loving and sweet. This party is forging bonds stronger than any blood family could dream of. (I love found family.) I can’t wait to see how they find the actual source of the miasma affecting the country.
I still love this series and cannot wait for the last book. Especially because I’m gonna binge read the whole thing again. I’ve read so many books in between episodes that I don’t quite remember exactly what happened that they are referring to in this book. I almost wondered if I missed something but no, it’s just me (I think 🤔 probably more than likely).
Anywho, I highly recommend but best binge read in order.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
As always I loved this installment and still wish I found the series after it had been completed. Reading each short chapter, despite how delightful they are, is a special kind of torture. I did get a giggle from reading the authors note though. I love that some things are decided by an actual role of the dice and finding out that Inghram has failed every single one of his history checks is pretty hilarious. Until next time, I both can't wait to read the final book and am absolutely dreading the idea of leaving this cast of characters being.
Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review.Ìý Law and Berklak have done the something forbidden with out an onze of shame, but really can you blame these two? After all the pull to one another was instantaneous. Aww! Someone is feeling left out of the companionship that is heavily brewing with the adventurous party. Side note who here they learned, they speak a bit of Dwarven?
I`m loving these books. In this one we discover a lot about the miasma in Thyr and how it works. The insight in Frost family was great. Watching Berklak share mead with Lawton makes me smile like a dork. I loved this the same as the other three books and I`m rooting for not being the king the evil mastermind, because it would break Lawton`s heart. Jennifer Cody seems to be having fun playing with these characters and it shows clearly. I need to know how this ends like yesterday!
The only thing that I could see as an improvement to this story would have it being all in one book instead of episodes, sorry chapters. I’m loving the characters development as the story progresses and the way the adventure and mystery advances. So onwards to the last chapter. Come on fellow adventurers, excitement awaits you. All you need to do is buy the chapters and read to follow the fun and adventure too.
4.5 but I rounded up because it’s my own fault for procrastinating and not reading these as soon as they are released, lol.
I am still enjoying the group’s adventure! Love that they have an idea of what’s going on and we’re down to one more chapter! The author’s note was intriguing and I will definitely have to reread in the future to fully understand. But I’m still here for all of it! :)
This episode consists of low-key adventure and more information gathering. The "brigade" is moving along in the quest and begins preparing for the next step. They also end up with some unexpected support. Can't wait for the next episode!
I only noted one or two proofreading issues in the ARC.
Another absolutely amazing chapter in this fantastic series! We finally make headway in finding out what is behind all the darkness and hostility and the king finds out about a certain anchoring but doesn’t try to kill anyone so all is good with the adventuring party as they get ready to set off in search of their foe.
I continue to enjoy this group's journey and what they get up to. I love that Lawton is finally able to know what really being loved is like. Berklak is so supportive of him and will do anything for him to be happy. I enjoy seeing the other adventurers grow throughout this and look forward to more.
Law and his team of Loyal guards and friends embark on the journey to the other dwarf lands. Frosts home this time around and a lot of discoveries are made. Now they have a cure and a direction to follow to end this curse. We have to wait till the next book to find out who cursed the land and why.
Fast-paced comedic high fantasy adventure with adventure parties, necromancy, shenanigans, ridiculousness, unexpected twists and turns, investigation, and wholesome romance with some well-written sex scenes. I love the developing relationship between Lawton and Berklak, and how the stakes and powers keep rising. I can't wait to see what happens on their adventure.
Things are heating up now. Having figured out who the maisma is drawn to and how to dispel it from someone, the Beefcake Brigade moves to Kings Crossing where they meet up with the King, Lawtons dad. He doesn’t seem to mind the increased power, the newly formed bond and the party. One more chapter to wrap this up. I’m sad my time with group is almost done.
This is just so brilliant, and I honestly can not get enough of these characters and their story. Getting more details about the adventure and just so much fun! Can not wait for the next installment, but I'm just not ready for it to end!
this one was a little softer but filled with information, cuddles, soft moments and wonderful communication, the continuing of their connections as a family, and maybe to each other and just a wonderful time as we get that step closer to the final act.
Each new chapter of this has been a lot of fun to read. While this one wasn't my favorite so far, it was another good one. I can't wait to get to the last part to see how things end.
I do love the way Lawton is written, he is so cute. The gang are well on the way with their quest and they think they might have solved the mystery of how the curse is affecting women and the way to stop it. Unfortunately it is going to take them to a cold and icy place.
Absolutely love this series and incredibly impatient for the next chapter, although I will be sad to see the end. The characters have a lot of life to them and the interaction between everyone is interesting to read. I enjoyed the tidbit about the rolls.
Enjoyable short read, highly recommended for a light and entertaining read. I would have like the whole story in one book but it was worthy of that inconvenience for just the laughs alone, but it lost a star.
Lawton and Berklak and their adventuring group continue with their adventure, trying to find out what is causing women to attack men. Lawton and Berklak strengthen anchor bond. I loved this instalment.
This was a really great chapter, even with the extra fluff :)
This chapter may have had a little more fluff than the first three, but I have really fallen in love with the characters, especially Lawson. He's just such an awesome little twink necromancer lol.
I hate it! Really, I hate to read series which are not complete. And in this time i didn't realised that is not complete! So you understand, it was really nice and interesting, now I don´t know the end of the story and who knows when is the next book coming? So I´m sad now....
