Chicago Thunder #3

Defensive Zone

Rate this book
Zach
Since I was six years old, my world has revolved around two things: Carter Lockwood and hockey.
We made a pact in college before we turned pro to always put each other first. To make each other our priority, but being in love with your straight best friend can make that hard, especially when you have to watch them fall in love with someone else.
I don’t want to break my best friend's heart to save my own, but I need to put some space between us to save our friendship.
Only this time, it’s not just the defensive zone I’m protecting, but also my heart.

Carter
From the moment I met Zach Reid, we were inseparable.
Nobody really understands why I always wanted to be with him. Our relationship is what some people call codependent, but he’s been my favorite person for over two decades, and life is always calmer when he’s around.
But something changed between us over the summer, and I started to see him in a different way.
Then the pact we made in college started to fall apart, along with my football career.
I don’t know what happened or how to make it right, but there’s one thing I know for certain.
I’m lost without him.

Defensive Zone is a childhood best friends to lovers sports romance featuring a hockey player and football player. It includes unrequited love, a bi-awakening, mutual pining and all the Thunder found family vibes.
It is book three in the Chicago Thunder series and can be read as a standalone.

The third in the Chicago Thunder series, and another effortlessly easy M/M sports romance to consume by author Jodi Oliver.

Series besties Zach and Carter finally get their time to shine, when Zach’s lifelong crush on his BFF comes to light, kickstarting a new phase of intense feelings and awareness for Carter, as he begins questioning his sexuality and the true depths of his love for best-buddy Zach in the aftermath of an intense sporting injury.

As a sucker for a good friends-to-lovers romance, I’d been excited for this instalment since we first met Zach in book one, seeing how much of the quiet gentle-giant hockey player he was and knowing very early on how sweet he was on his football star best friend.

For the most part, I enjoyed how their story played out, especially when it came to the impetus of their shifting relationship, spurred by some hurt-comfort goodness, and Carter’s golden-retriever eagerness to acknowledge, accept, and explore his shifting sexuality and his expanding feelings for Zach.

There were some time-jumps early in the story, used to showcase the increasing heartache and intensity of their feelings (from both sides) in the lead up to them becoming romantically involved. I’m not generally a fan of time-jumps myself, but I understand why they were a necessary evil in telling this story in the most practical way.

As on par with the series to date, the romance was sappy and sweet, the sex scenes were heated and passionate, and the ensemble cast of characters were present and entertaining, giving this whole thing a nice found family vibe that I enjoy immensely.

I was glad to see there was more sports-related talk (hockey and football) and game-play scenes in this one than in the second book (which was called for a reason, I guess!).

I especially appreciated the hurt-comfort arc, following Zach’s hockey-fuelled concussion and the very realistic, lengthy recovery he faced as he experienced many life-impacting symptoms in the aftermath. There’s nothing more annoying in sports romances than reading about injuries that seem to miraculously become non-issues, so hats off to the author for giving this plot-point the time and significance it deserved.

Although this is perhaps not my favourite in the series to date, I still thoroughly enjoyed my time with Zach and Carter and all their Chicago Thunder family. This series is prime M/M fluff for me: not too angsty, great cast of characters, and plenty sweet and romantic enough to leave me happy and eager to return for more.

I knew this one was going to make me cry!

Zach's heartache made me so sad, but Carter's emotions when Zach was putting distance between them and not explaining why was worse!

I really liked how easily they transitioned their relationship from best friends to boyfriends and that there was no freak out or running away from it. I love that these books have pretty low angst and no third act breakups or relationship trauma between the MCs.

I would have liked to see more of their families though because it was as though they didn't really exist? It was like they were hatched from eggs and their parents just disappeared! Zach's parents were mentioned briefly but there was nothing about Carter's at all, which confused me because I don't recall anything saying they had a difficult relationship or that they weren't in the picture. I just assumed that with these two finally getting together there would be at least something with their families!

I am curious about Zach's brother though, he was mentioned too many times and I'm curious if it's set up for a series involving the Toronto team? If so I'd love that because I'm enjoying this series so much!

I do feel like I'm being edged about Elliott though 😂 it's been mentioned that he has a partner in two epilogues now but I'm assuming the next book will be Jackson and Hayden's second chance romance? I'm so eager for Elliott's story though because he's my favourite side character!!!

The Chicago Thunder books are just so simplistic. There's no sense of the grueling schedule of professional sports and the physical and mental toll it takes on the players. There's no real emotions, no nuance to the characters or relationship, no sophistication to the prose, no complexity.

We're supposed to believe Carter was oblivious to Zach's feelings for twenty years? Two grown men (professional athletes!) are cuddling on the couch, constantly hugging/touching, running fingers through each other's hair, spending every waking moment together ... sure, that's not gay AT ALL.

Then Zach is injured, and Carter's like, How did I not see this coming? I want to have sex with this man! Right now. In the shower.

There's much scowling, chuckling, bellowing, yelling, grinning (wide, toothy grinning to be exact). Plus, Big Epiphanies: Am I having some kind of fever dream? I made my best friend hard.

A stiff breeze will make your friend hard. Calm down.

It's all so very predictable and mechanical. Compare this book to the work of Tal Bauer, old-school Heidi Cullinan, KJ Charles ... I mean, you can't. It's like comparing Van Gogh to the scribbles of a 6-year-old.

I think I’m getting burnt out on friends to lovers cause this one just didn’t hit. And I hardly remember anything besides the amnesia troupe which I hate so 🤷‍♂

Maybe I’ll circle back when I’m not in my anti friends to lovers phase.

For our third trip with the Chicago Thunder we get a truly gorgeous friends to lovers romance with a side order of bisexual awakening and I'm here for it.

Zach and Carter have been around this series since the beginning and there's always been something about the closeness of their friendship that's drawn the eye and here we get to find out why.

They've been besties since they were six-years-old and Zach's been in love with his American Football playing friend since he realised he was gay when he was 10. There's been years of hidden pining but things come to a head when Carter meets a woman he thinks might be the one.

I liked very much how Jodi wrote their co-dependent friendship without ever making Zach seem like a sad sack who was hanging around his best friend with faint hope. Carter is just as invested in spending time with Zach, but he's never questioned why he finds most comfort settled on a couch and running his fingers through his bestie's long hair!

Carter's awakening comes after Zach pulls back to protect his own heart and it's both really funny and very poignant to see how he struggles and then comes to the dawning realisation that he's actually in love with his best friend.

The sexual exploration scenes are brilliantly done, there's so much emotion and Carter's enthusiasm to discover what turns Zach on is expressed through both smoking hot sex but also through honest conversation.

As with the previous in this series, it's written in an universe which is queer normative and without any homophobia, so it's nice to see how all their mutual friends and found family react when they tell them they're officially dating - which is hilariously along the lines of "we always knew you were, it was only you two who didn't!"

There's plenty of pining, a bit of angst, but ultimately, this is a wonderful friends to lovers romance with a side order of what it's like to deal with a concussive head injury in pro sports.

I started this a few days ago, immediately saw the author's note saying it's low angst and immediately shelved it. Then I picked it up again today and yep, low angst.

It's not that it was boring. Everything just went too swimmingly well(in spite of the fact that Zach got a concussion). The romance aspect had ZERO angst once it was mentioned out loud.

But hey Zach got to nuzzle Carter's hot sweaty balls, so yay!!!

If you're in the mood for a chill book where things are delightful the entire time then this is just the book for you.

Sadly, I miss toxicity, unbelievable angst and infidelity so I'm off to find some of that.

I might just need to add Childhood friends to lovers on my list of favorite tropes. There was definitely parts that had me in my feels which I wasn't expecting at all.
This book was stupid cute and such a easy read with good banter, found family vibes and great spice. I really enjoyed reading about Carter and Zach.

"I’ve loved Zach Reid since we were six years old, and it might have taken me twenty- three years to catch up, but I’m so glad I get to love him now. "

Can't wait to read the next book in this series!!

Finally! The third book in Chicago Thunder is here! This has without a doubt been one of my most anticipated reads this year, and I would have screamed when it landed on my Kindle, but I was sick so I could scream and I couldn't even read it right away as I wanted to. Now I'm finally feeling better, so I picked this up yesterday morning, and finished it with a big smile in the evening. I just couldn't stop reading.

Defensive Zone is incredibly sweet, very low angst and full of swoony moments.

Zach and Carter were the perfect couple, even when they weren't a couple, if you look away from the fact that Carter was dating other people, women, since he's the straight best friend. Your heart will break alongside Zach's as he watches the love of his life, his best friend, find a woman who might be "the one". But your heart will break for Carter too, when you see how heartbroken he gets when Zach takes distance to their normally co-dependent friendship.

Their way back to each other is full of new realizations, experiences and a whole lot of love

So I definitely enjoyed this one more than the last one but Blaine and Alex are still my favorite of the series! I hate that the manwhore’s book was my favorite, you have no idea how much that frustrates me lol.

Anyway I honestly love both of these characters so much. They were both really sweet and I loved their friendship. Once they got into a relationship I loved them together even more. I have no problem with the characters at all. I even love all the side characters.

I think my main problem lies in the order of things that happened in this book. So Zach has been in love with Carter since he was like 10 years old. They have been besties since they were 6. Zach has never told Carter how he feels so Zach has to watch him date girl after girl for years and years.

So they go to Hawaii for their yearly vacation. They are both single at this point and I like that they have a pact to never get with anyone on vacation because it was their time together. I also love how codependent they were, I love me some codependency in books!! But on this trip, Carter, who thinks of himself as straight and has never looked at Zach in any other way than his best friend. He sees people flirting with Zach and he gets soo jealous. He hates when someone touches him and he’s like Zach is Mine. I was like yes okay I love this. But then…weeks after their trip Carter gets into a relationship with this girl Reagan and tells Zach that she’s the one!! So this bothered me on so many levels because I didn’t understand having Carter get so jealous of someone touching Zach and calling Zach his for him to get into a relationship weeks later and say that she’s the one? That just didn’t make sense to me. I feel like it would have been much better if the book started with him already in this relationship and then he gets jealous and realizes his feelings for Zach. It definitely took a star off for me for playing out in that way. Luckily the girl the very likable and she broke it off with Carter because she could tell he loved Zach.

Anyway I liked that a lot of the book was them together in a relationship. I hate when characters get together so late in the book and we hardly see them being a couple so I very much liked how much we get to see them together. They were really cute.

I wish Elliot’s book was next because I love him so much!!! I’m kind of not looking forward to Jackson and Hayden’s book because they had a secret relationship in the past that didn’t work out and they broke up and both got married to other people and now they are coming back together. I’m not a fan of second chance especially when they marry other people. But we shall see.

NO CHEATING
OW DRAMA (Carter gets into a relationship in like the second or third chapter)
NO OM DRAMA
NO THIRD ACT BREAK UP
VERSE COUPLE
FIRST PERSON DUAL POV
HEA (engaged)

This is the sweetest little friends to lovers , bi awakening , I love their bond and connection. 4⭐️ 3 🌶️It really pulled on my heartstrings they were friends since six years old. They play for two different sports teams, but they always make sure to spend every free moment. They have with each other, but it’s platonic except one of the guys Zach wants it to be more but he’s never approached the topic Their friendship was really amazing it makes you want to experience that type of closeness with someone , I love how much once carter realized they were even game he was all in

The tropes for this one checked all my boxes- friends to lovers, bi awakening, found family, sports and pining. Ugh I loveeee some pining. I loved their codependency, their platonic cuddling and just their relationship overall was just good for the heart. And if these guys were real they would be really great for the eyes. 😉 The description Carter gives of Zach early on in the book when he first makes some realizations is 🔥. Like Carter, I get it - and you’ll know what part I'm talking about when you get there. I’m a sucker for found family so meeting the Chicago Thunder just added another level to this story and I can’t wait to explore more of Zach’s hockey team mates. As a fellow migraine suffer, I really appreciated the accurate representation of what a migraine is because it really can be that debilitating. Jodi is a new author to me, I did not read books 1 & 2 ( please don’t come for me🫣) if you’ve been here awhile it's kinda my thing and it’s how I’ve found and fallen in love with some of my favorite authors, so I think it works well for me lol . I loved the writing style, it flowed so smoothly, it was well paced and kept me intrigued from start to finish. Before I even finished the book I had already run to my TBR to add the first two and I’m excited to see where the next book leads!

Let’s start by saying that this is my first full novel by Jodi (I know, I started with book three in the series), but I’ve read and looooved her novella from thr Popped Anthology and couldn’t wait to read her current series! And I was not disappointed at all!

Zach and Carter are best friends since forever. They’ve been clued together from the start, constantly texting, spending all their summers together and cuddling whenever they can. They have the sweetest tradition and can’t seem to spend a single day without talking with each other. Things aren’t easy as they’re both professional players (football and hockey). But they make it work.

But the thing is, Zach has been in love with Carter from the very beginning. And it’s starting to hurt a bit too much to carry on this way. So when he begins to take some space, life gets in the way and soon these two have to face the real nature of their feelings.

I loved loved loved the pining. My heart broke for Zach over and over again, but also for Carter. He’s lost, not understanding why his BF is suddenly cold and distant. These two are miserable without each other. But when they are forced to stay together (loved that forced proximity mixed with some hurt/comfort), the natural development of their relationship was beautiful.

Thank you Jodi for the ARC, I can’t wait to read the first two books now. BUT ALSO, the teasing for the next couple had me 😱😱❤️❤️ (some of my fave tropes are coming!!!)

Zach and Carter finally get their story.

There’s plenty of pining and heartbreak, but it’s not super drawn out and angsty which is really nice.

Ready for Elliot’s story and now potentially Jackson’s?!?!

Arc Review

Oh Jodi, you have only gone and done it again!

Zach Reid has been in love with his best friend since he was ten years old. He wants to keep the feelings hidden as he doesn't want to ruin the friendship, as Carter is straight.

Carter Lockwood moved next door to Zach when he was six years old. They both loved sports and bonded over Ice Hockey and Football, the first time they met. From that moment Carter declared they would be best friends for life.

When their respective sports seasons end, they spend as much time together as they can. They go on holiday to Hawaii, where Carter meets Reagan, who is a potential girlfriend. Once back home they get together. Zach feels pushed out, and to save his heart and sanity, he decides to go back home to Chicago. Leaving both himself and Carter heartbroken. Carter cannot process why he feels so bereft once Zach leaves. Reagan gives him a wonderful piece of advice, which at the time doesn't make sense, but further down the road, pieces start to fit.

Zach and Carter are perfection. Zach is such a sweetheart and is as loyal as they come. Carter is a beautiful, oblivious soul. They are meant to be together from the moment they met all those years ago.

Jodi Oliver has written such another exceptional book, she has such a talent at writing hockey romances. The last two in the Chicago Thunder series (Trade Deadline and Off Season) have both featured in my top reads of the year, and this one will also be there.

This is one of the best childhood friends to lovers books I have read. Please, please, please read this book. You will love it. I am keeping everything crossed Elliott gets his story too.

Zach and Carter are definitely soulmates, they have been best friends since Carter moved next to Zach's house when they were 6 years old and since then they've been inseparable. School, college, vacation, off seasons, they've spent all their free time together.
But while Carter was happy and oblivious, Zach has been pining over his best friend for two decades; he had to see the man he loved with hookups and girlfriend and when Carter confided to him that the last woman could be "the one", Zach's heart finally breaks and he decides to distance himself from Carter.

What prevented me from giving a higher rate:
I completely agree that Zach had to protect himself and that it wasn't good to him to keep struggling over his unrequited love, but I didn't like how he handled the situation. He and Carter were basically married and he just ghosted his best friend for months, breaking his heart and making him spiral.
I feel like some side characters' presence didn't really fit in the story: for exemple, Raegan was such a good friend to Carter and then she just disappeared; Carter's teammates sent flowers but never made a phone call in months. And what about the player who hit one of the MC?

I loved the intimacy of this story, the author really delivered the best friends to lovers trope: Zach and Carter are able to read and understand each other, they know what the other needs and, besides the months of their separation, there's no miscommunication between them, they're completely open, especially about their future.
I also liked very much that the author gave a lot of attention to the dangerous side of being pro athletes and the consequences for the players' health; I liked that Carter and Zach are down to earth people and there's no throwing money right, left and center just because they're very wealthy.

Next book will be Jackson's story, a second chance/single dad romance: it's already hinted who the other MC will be and I very much look forward to read about them!

The Chicago Thunder are great guys and I loved to see them all again. This book is a great addiction to the series.

I received an ARC of this book from The Author Agency and this is my honest review.

Already accepted i am going to be in the minority for this but it is what it is.

I really just didn’t connect with either character. Maybe its just because of timing and when I read it, it was after books that shared character names and hockey romance and a specific plot point and another book where the characters were building the same lego, I just couldn’t stop thinking of the other books/characters while reading this. There was nothing that captivated me in this book to really have me give it my full attention which is a shame because I adored Blaine/Alex in book 1, it is one of my all time favorites.

Regardless of that, if you like hockey romance and friends to lovers and a vers couple, then you’ll definitely like this!! It just wasn’t enough for me unfortunately.

My Achilles heel (I guess this would be a pun?) is a friends to lovers where one has been in love with the other forever and pines for decades, and this book does that. Probably my favorite of this series, and I really loved both Carter and Zach. This was a cute read, and really hit a lot of my favorite tropes, so it made me so happy.

I have been WAITING for Zach and Carter’s story, and let me tell you, Defensive Zone gave me everything I wanted and more! 😭 If best friends to lovers is a fave trope, then Zach and Carter’s journey is a must-read.

Zach—our sweet, gentle giant and all-around angel 🥺—has been holding onto this unrequited love since he was TEN. He’s a hockey star with a heart of gold, never one to raise his voice but always quick to be there for his friends (and Carter, of course). Seeing him finally open up and find love was like watching a dream come true. And the way he’s obsessed with donuts and cupcakes? 🍩💕 Just makes him even more lovable.

And then there’s Carter, the most oblivious yet endearing cinnamon roll to ever exist 🥰. Even before realizing his own feelings, he’s always been there for Zach, combing his fingers through his hair, snuggling up with him, and being that solid support. The way Carter realizes what Zach means to him, after years of cluelessness, was a full-on “FINALLY moment 🙌, and let me tell you, it’s worth every second of angst to get there.

Their connection is so beautiful—it’s obvious they’re two halves of the same whole 💫. There’s a genuine intimacy between them that just flows, like they’ve been in sync their entire lives. From little gestures to their shared love of Star Wars, this romance felt REAL. I laughed, I swooned, and yes, I bawled my eyes out 😭 during some of their scenes. Watching them support each other through tough times and cherish each other’s every little quirk made this book feel like a hug.

And the Chicago Thunder teammates? 🏒💕 They’re the ultimate found family, supporting each other on and off the ice, and honestly, the team feels like one big, lovable family.

And that epilogue? Pure perfection!! 🥹 Couldn’t have asked for a better HEA for these two. Jodi Oliver, you’ve outdone yourself with this series, and I’m officially OBSESSED. Can’t wait for what’s next—bring on all the love, angst, and Thunder boys!

Idiots in love and intense pining
ARC review: Defensive Zone by Jodi Oliver

If you look up "idiots in love" in the dictionary, there should honestly be a photo of Zach and Carter. I absolutely adored these two idiots! The book had me in tears from the prologue, so I knew it was going to be an emotional ride. I’m a sucker for books that make me feel all the things, and this one nailed it.

Best friends-to-lovers is my favourite trope, and this story delivered it with a deliciously intense helping of pining. Zach’s been pining for Carter since he was 10, so it’s next-level longing here. And, as it turns out, Carter’s been pining too - just without the self-awareness. Watching these two tiptoe around each other was so perfectly frustrating!

I loved all the Star Wars references, they made my geeky, little heart very happy.

I yelled at Carter several times about how his thoughts were not platonic, that glorious idiot!

Favourite moments: Zach & Carter's first kiss was one of my favourite first-kiss scenes ever, just perfect. That heartbreaking moment when Zach left Denver early - I felt their pain. When Carter sleepily called Zach "baby" for the first time, I melted.

The struggles Zach went through in this story were so real to me. Seeing him have to pull out of the Toronto game upset me so much. The representation of his challenges felt so genuine, and it was heart-wrenching.

And finally, the epilogue. Yes, it made me cry (no surprise there), but it was such a beautiful way to wrap up this story.

What to expect:
Idiots in love
Best friends-to-lovers
Hockey
A little football
Pining x 2 (so much pining!)
Star Wars references
Cute bestie traditions
Cameos from the Thunder crew
Chicago Thunder book 3

Even though Zach finally got his Carter, his journey to happiness was way too fucking long; it was full of misery, heartbreak, and agony. To read how miserable Zach felt when Carter began dating Raegan, to see her wearing Carter's shirt was breaking my heart, and the final blow was when Carter thought maybe Raegan was the one after failing another failed relationship with his ex-girlfriends.

It was understandable for Zach to finally move on and learn to live his life without Carter, but Carter can't even function without Zach by his side, and it cost him Raegan; she broke up with him, and even though initially I hated her for dating Carter, she was a good girl. Giving eye-opening advice for Carter, plus when Zach slowly avoided him, then Zach got hurt, finally it clicked that Zach was what he has been looking for all along.

Zach was hesitant, insecure, and doubting if Carter could easily change 180 degrees from dating women to dating his best friend, and I thought the author would explore more of that, but Zach was easy to convince that Carter's feelings were genuine.

The following book will be about Jackson, Zach's teammates, and Hayden, Carter's agent, and it will be a lot worse than Zach and Carter's story because it will be about second-chance romance, which were two tropes I hate the most beside best friends to lovers. Back then they were lovers; a long-distance relationship was hard, and it took a toll on them. They resent each other and fought all the time, and I bet they broke up on bad terms since when they met again, both were acting strange and awkward.

Both of them moved on. Jackson is a divorcee with two kids, but I don't know much about Hayden since there's nothing detailed about him.

I really wish Elliot got his own story since he was so adorable and a fun guy to be around.

I can't believe I am giving this a 3* when the first 30% was a 5* for sure. I loved the pinning so much and Zach's emotions were so vivid that I shared a few tears for him.
I excused Carter having a relationship during the book because I understood why it was needed. Shame that it did not really add anything except to bring on an action that caused so much pain to the two MC's that it was uncomfortable to read.
Also, I am not a fan on the injured trope where one of the MCs cares for the other as it feels unbalanced. And I felt that here as well as it wasn't very believable how they got together. I really wished either the injury did not happen or that they only got together after Zach was more himself.
I love this author so much and their writing that I know it's just a case of it not working for me. But I still feel a bit disappointed. Hopefully I will like their next book better.
Nice epilogue though and it was great to see some much loved characters.

This is a best friends to more romance, featuring Zach Reid and Carter Lockwood, and is book three in the Chicago Thunder series.

The first part of this book had me all stressed out as it was a little angsty in the best way (thanks book buddies for putting up with my ramblings), but once Carter had his awakening, it was all sweet and swoony, and it had lots of Carter’s dirty talk - WOW! Btw, Carter’s ex girlfriend is a gem.

I got frustrated, I cried, I laughed, I swooned. I loved it. Highly recommend this series, getting to know the characters more has been amazing and can’t wait to read the next book.

Ps. Narration was fantastic and I love the cover!

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 3 in series
MM romance
Best friends to more
NHL player x NFL player
Secret crush
Codependency
Star Wars fans
So much mutual pining
Hurt / comfort
Bi awakening
Caretaker
Idiots in love
Spicy times & dirty talk
Video s*x & edging
Monster c*ck
It’s always been you
Found family
Swoony HEA
