A nice reminiscent storyline highlighting all that is Christmas. It doesn't take much time to read, but honestly the illustrations are what makes this a delightful book to linger over. I very much enjoyed the peek at vintage Little Golden books and I appreciate how each illustration includes the title of the book it's from, as well as the author(s), illustrator, and publication year. Appealing to all ages, this colorful and charming compilation is perfect for grandparents and grandchildren to enjoy together during the Christmas season.

This is a gem of a book. You might say it is "golden." See what I did there? Big thanks to my GR friend Sheri for posting a review of this book. I was able to check it out on my Kindle from the library before going home to my mom's for Christmas. When I got there and was pulling out my tablet to show Mom the book, I looked across to her built-in bookshelves across the room and saw a row of gleaming gold spines. There were all the Golden Books she has been collecting for years. I did not know she had so many! We had a lovely time on the eve of Christmas Eve looking at the nostalgic illustrations and remembering the books that they were from. Each page has credits for the original book and illustrator. You can go on a treasure hunt to track down those old titles to see more of that particular book. There is also a holiday story to go along with all the pictures ending with Jesus in the manger. A beautiful addition to my Christmas celebration this year.

Everything I Need to Know About Christmas I Learned From a Little Golden Book is great for feeling nostalgic about childhood books and Christmas. It adorably takes pages from Little Golden Books about winter and Christmas to give little lessons about the season. How to enjoy the holidays, even when it’s a lot of work. How to keep the focus on family and the things that matter most, instead of spending money and stressing over having people over for Christmas festivities. How to enjoy the little things like hot cocoa and homemade decorations. It’s a sweet little book!

Filled with illustrations from classic Golden Books characters, from The Gingerbread Man to The Golden Book of Little Verses, the pages are filled with pages formerly gracing other Golden Books dating from the 1940s to the 1990s. Each page / illustration references the book it was originally in. I loved seeing the evolution of the styles of the art, there’s still a charm to these books that still appeals to me, probably even more now that I associate them with my children and their children. Likely they have even more nostalgic charm if you grew up reading these, or having them read to you.

I bought a copy of this when I saw it the other day, and one for my daughter whose youngest has developed a love of Golden Books. I’d bought my daughter a copy of Everything I Need to Know I Learned From a Little Golden Book, when that came out, as well.

There’s nothing, and yet perhaps everything profound in these books, but charm? There’s plenty of charm.

This series (for adults, mind you) is pure nostalgia and cuteness. Although this one wasn’t my favorite, it would still make a nice gift for anyone who loved the Golden Books as a child.

Remember those Little Golden Books you grew up with? Diane Muldrow has selected some of the best pictures from your favorites and arranged them here to make a brand new book about Christmas. Part trip down memory lane, part warm-up for the holidays* and all eye-candy. Whether you read it or just enjoy the full page illustrations, Everything I Need to Know About Christmas I Learned From a Little Golden Book has all the charm of every Golden Book plus the variety that comes from being a sort of greatest hits, if you will.

Makes me want to go back and pull all our Golden Books off the shelf and start reading them...

*too bad I didn't read it til after the New Year

What a lovely picture book for grown-ups! If you love Little Golden Books and they make you feel all nostalgic and warm and fuzzy inside this is the book for you. A beautiful picture book, where each page is taken from an LGB from the 40s-60s with one each from the 70s and 80s. Some of my favourite artists are here: Eloise Wilkin, Garth Williams, Tibor Gergely and Gustaf Tenggren. There's also plenty of Richard Scarry and Corrine Malvern, plus an illustrator I hadn't been familiar with whose pictures I now adore: Retta Worcester. I'm only skimming the top of the cream with the illustrators I mention, there are plenty more. The words make up a little story, for grown-ups, about Christmas, which is sweet and made me go "Awe" at the end. Of course, you can share the book with your child friends, but they may not find the illustrations as adorable as you do and you may want to skip some of the text aimed at the adult such as " And let's not even think about the hassles of holiday travel. the excess! The expense!" or "Why not put the kids' energy to good use?" I collect Little Golden Books and this one is a keeper for me. I'm definitely getting the Valentine's one coming out and need to get the first one put out earlier this year. Beautiful book with glossy, high quality pages.

This book is just so darn cute! If you grew up (or are still growing up) with the Little Golden Books this book is just a trip down memory lane with all the pictures from the most beloved books. With the turn of every page the new images just make you smile and bring you back to your childhood. Now, if you didn't grow up with the books, this book would still be terrific with the adorable old fashioned and newer style pictures and the cute little words that run across the bottom of the pages telling a little story to go along with them. It's just terrific. I would recommend this to anyone who would find the nostalgia and those who want an absolutely adorable Christmas book. I loved it!

the illustrations in this book are beautiful, but it's nothing more than that. the story that goes along with it isn't sweet or insightful, and it felt like they chose the illustrations and then struggled to add text. nice if you get it for free or see it on a shelf and want a quick read, but don't go out buying this unless you're doing it only for the drawings

I loved my Golden Books as a child and I loved sharing them with my children. This little compilation is a lovely, nostalgic patchwork of various Golden Book stories which combine to tell all about Christmas. The book fills me with nostalgia and warms my heart...perfect feelings for Christmas. And my granddaughter loved it, too. So....three generations of love for Golden Books.

It was very nostalgic of reading many Little Golden Books during my childhood. I loved the illustrations from some of the classic stories. This book gives you all the warm and fuzzy Christmas feelings. It would make a good secret Santa gift for someone. Not much complaints there’s just not much of a story.

I really didn't expect to find advice on how to improve my Christmas from this book. What I did find was special memories of my sons childhoods. It brought tears to my eyes remembering those times spent with my sons. It also makes a great Christmas coffee table book. Well done!

Fascinating, mesmerizing and wonderful to take a trip back to memory lane. I was born in 1952. Little Golden Books were very popular and prevalent at that time. For a mere quarter, I could read simple tales of The Animals Merry Christmas by Kathryn Jackson with illustrations of Richard Scary. The Porky Little Puppy's First Christmas, and, the 1946 book Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, as well as The Baby's First Christmas by Esther Wilkin

The best part of this book are the collection of illustrations from other Golden Books from 1949 to present. The printing is very well done and the illustrations are sharper than most of the original printings, many I already have.

I'd rather had a portfolio of Golden Book illustrations in book form many times the size of this volume.

There is a slight bit of writing of Christmas that ties the illustrations together, though that can be passed over for the illustrations.

Bottom line: i recommend this book. 8 out of ten points.

There's advice in this book? I think I missed that. I got this mostly to look at the pictures because I grew up reading Golden Books. I loved the pictures. The words that accompany the pictures seemed stupid. But it was nice to look at the pictures and feel like a kid again.

This book is really cute, as are all of the books in this series. Reading the titles of the books where the pictures came from makes me want to divulge into my childhood and re-read some of those wonderful Little Golden Books!

The message it so true and it's fun to see the variety of pictures for golden books through the years. I think this series, while thicker book, has fewer words than the average golden book 😅

My aunt bought this book for her one year old great grand niece. Because obviously this is the demographic this book was written for. Ah, but I kid.

Turns out my aunt has a special connection to Little Golden Books. As the baby of the family, born after the Great Depression was over and my grandfather's medical practice was established, my aunt acquired a vast empire (uh...collection...a substantial collection) of Little Golden Books.

Even after she had outgrown them my aunt carefully stored her Little Golden empire on the built in shelves in her attic bedroom (in case you feel sorry for the poor baby sister shoved out of sight in a dingy attic hovel, she had the largest bedroom in the house).

Like many older houses, eventually rats invaded the attic. My grandmother took aggressive action, and liberally sprinkling poisoned rat pellets in the attic space butting up to my aunt's bedroom, which eliminated the rodent invasion, and was declared a decisive victory.

Except...

Like many older houses eventually there was a leak in the roof. As bad luck would have it the leak was over the built in book shelves housing my aunt's Little Golden Book collection. The water damage was actually not that bad, and most of the books could have been rescued and dried out with minimal damage.

Except...

The rat poison guarding the attic from vermin? There was a fair bit of that in the attic space that was right above the built in shelves. And? Old style rat poison pellets actually dissolved easily in a small amount of water. And that now toxic water managed to soak into every single Little Golden Book in my aunt's collection. So sadly my aunt's book hoard was hauled off to the dump so that my grandmother's future grandchild (hi Sarah!) was not struck down by brightly colored children's literature.

This is the worst book review ever. Over six paragraphs in and I haven't mentioned the book. But this is probably the only time you'll read a tale of toxic children's books (gracious, I really hope it is the only time. I'd hate for this sort if thing to be a repeating problem!), so....you're welcome.

I meant to read this around Christmas time, but is was still packed in some boxes I had not yet unpacked after the move. I actually forgot that I bought it! So, a pleasant surprise for me when I found it upon finally unpacking that box.

I loved, loved, loved reading through this book and then flipping back through reminiscing which Golden Books I had when I was younger that were represented in this collection. I really love what Diane Muldrow has done with this series. Anyone who love Little Golden books will simply love this Christmas take off of her original version.

I really liked it, it's a beautiful book , with illustrations from several decades, since 1940 .
It shows the spirit of Christmas with pictures and nice phrases.
It is a collage that worked out well and I would definitely read it for kids.

A charming book that's good fun to page through, especially if you have read a great number of Golden Books. Unfortunately, the only two stories I recognized from this were The Poky Little Puppy and Animal Friends. Seeing a picture from that last one was such a blast from the past.

Loved the pictures from all the other Golden Books & that it gave credit on each page for the book the picture came from. Including Author & Illustrator.
However I thought the store was lacking, but was happy it addressed the true meaning of CHRISTmas, the birth of Jesus.

This was a cute journey down memory lane. I had (still have most) all of the books featured when I was growing up. I miss the days of such beautiful illustrations being the norm and not the exception.
