The scowl should’ve been my first clue to stay far away from Anson Hunt. The sexy smirk and the fact that he’s my brother’s best friend? Reasons two and three. Not to mention, he’s the new contractor working on my house.
He’s everything I’m not: grumpy, rude, and more than a little attached to his solitude. It doesn’t matter how many times I try to kill him with kindness; the man simply won’t crack.
Until he sees me shatter.
Because when my world comes crashing down around me, Anson is the one catching me as I fall. And as so-called accidents start plaguing every part of my life, it’s Anson who steps in to keep me safe.
As he does, I can’t help but feel a flicker of heat. And it only takes a single moment for that spark to ignite into flames, engulfing us both.
But Anson’s a man with secrets, and they have a price. When they’re revealed, neither of us will make it out unscathed

Idk how this was possible but every single trope I love was in this book. Small town romance - check ✔️, brothers best friend - check ✔️, grumpy x sunshine - check ✔️, enemies to lovers, spice level 🤌🏻, touch her and die, - check, check and check ✔️ Oh and there was a murder mystery happening at the same time, LIKE?!?! Read it.

i’m lately choosing to not put any efforts into reviews attached to books that BETRAYED me, because to say i am disappointed by this new release is an euphemism. the lack of chemistry between the protagonists was honestly concerning because i kept wondering ‘was this book really written by Catherine Cowles?? i also did not understand what was going on with the dialogues and soap-opera turning they were forged with. i couldn’t feel any compassion nor attachment towards the protagonists which was honestly bizarre, because a melodramatic plotline linked to a damaged hero usually never fails on seducing me. but gladly, the secondary characters saved the show and i cannot wait for the upcoming book in the series. i just know that im gonna love shep and thea !!!
( ⚠️theory for anyone who has read the book i have a kinda wild theory.. are fallon and kye going to end up together???? because i dont know how the author gonna pull a forbidden step-siblings romance but i’ll be here for it!!)
Anson and Rhodes were EVERYTHING, from their adorable banter to their raw emotions to their INSANE chemistry. I could not be more obsessed with two main characters. And how broody Anson is!? Swooooon. He would push Rhodes away, but the more they had to be around each other, the more his walls starting breaking down and he opened up to Rhodes.
The suspense in here had me on the edge of my seat and I could NOT have been more shocked. I looooved how Anson was an ex-profiler and how there was such a threat of danger throughout this story. Who could we trust?! WE NEVER KNOW. Classic Catherine Cowles suspense 👏🏻
While I always love her romance and her suspense, the found family really stole this show with this book. The foster siblings are so protective of one another and Lolli is one of my new favorite side characters. She cracked me up so much! I loved this found family and cannot wait for even more books in this series!
If you can't tell, I am OBSESSED. You have to pick up the first book in this new series as soon as it's released!!!!!
so she ran after her boyfriend who was chasing a possible serial killer because she heard a gunshot. her combat-trained, armed with a gun, ex-FBI boyfriend. while she was barefoot, had no training, and no weapon. what the fuck do you think you could do even if you did find him. kill the killer with dirt?
and the hero's reaction when she eventually found him was "where are your shoes?" ??????????????? they truly deserve each other. they're both equally stupid.
and the hero kept calling her "reckless". like as a nickname. even in serious situations. if someone actually did that in real life i would vomit
4.5⭐️ Having never read a book by Catherine Cowles (I know, I am incredibly late to the romance party) I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. She is quite well known for her romantic suspense, which she delivers here in droves. But she also gives us so much more.
This book is angsty - filled with the harder parts of life including tragedy and grief. While emotionally heavy at times, she handles these harder topics well, never allowing them to overpower the story, but rather uses them to bolster it in a way that adds color and depth.
As you learn about each of these characters and their backstories, your heart will break for them. They have suffered true loss, and Cowles leads us through that loss in detail. They are well fleshed-out characters that feel so incredibly real, they could just as easily exist off the page as on it.
Ultimately, I think that’s what stood out the most to me - her character development. Unlike many other indie romance novels, it is the characters that took center stage, more than their eventual romance. And by doing this, it led to an even bigger emotional payoff once these two connected on an intimate level.
🎧 I listened to this one, in part, and loved the way narrators added yet another layer of emotion to an already emotional story. Andi Arndt is amazing at conveying both flirty humor and raw vulnerability and sometimes even within the same scene, and her authentic portrayal of Rhodes furthered my connection to the story.
I cannot wait to continue this series. This may have been my first Catherine Cowles, but it most certainly will not be my last.

I’ve always said Catherine Cowles is for the Criminal Minds & romance book loving girlies (aka me), and she took that to the next level by writing the most prefect grumpy and protective ex-profiler hero 🤌I was hooked right from the start, and WOW was I taken for a ride!
Anson & Rhodes had such a strong and unique connection. My heart hurt for the things they’ve gone through, but seeing them both grow and heal together was everything. They slowly become each other’s safe spaces, and it was just beautiful to witness 🥹These two deserve nothing but happiness, which is exactly what they found in one another. I was also a huge fan of the ‘Reckless nickname! 🤭
Once again, Catherine has blown me away with the romantic suspense and found family vibes 💗I will already read anything and everything she writes, but she truly set up such a solid foundation for the rest of the series. I already cannot wait to come back to Sparrow Falls with each new release and character the next book seriously has my name written all over it, and I’M SOOO EXCITED!! 😭
Thank you so much to Catherine Cowles & her team for an ARC of this book 💌

anson is about to be one of catherine's grumpiest tortured heroes ever and I AM SO READY!!
Fragile Sanctuary is book one in the brand new series, Sparrow Falls by Catherine Cowles. Holy Wow! Catherine has done it again. It’s beyond amazing how every book I read of hers is more amazing than the previous. This is the perfect blend of romance and suspense and I loved every minute of it.
Rhodes or as her friends and family call her, Rho, is twenty seven years old. When Rho was thirteen years old, she suffered a trauma that changed her forever. Now, all these years later, she’s ready to finally move on and face her past. She is having her family’s beloved Victorian home rebuilt back to it’s original splendor. Her brother Shep’s construction firm is handling the rebuild and his right hand man, who is a restoration specialist and also his best friend, Anson, is working on it with him.
Anson Hunt is thirty five years old. He’s been in Sparrow Falls for a couple of years now working with his college best friend, Shep. Anson has plenty of secrets of his own, a past he wants to stay just where it is, in his past. Anson and Rhodes’s first meeting might not have gone very well. At all! But there was something about her that drew him to her. She had a light about her that called to him but he knew he couldn’t give in to it. Because his darkness would crush her light.
Try as they might, though, these two circled each other. Until things started to happen in Rhodes life, things that meant she was in danger. And that was all it took for Anson to finally give in because he had to make sure she was safe and he was the only person he wanted to keep her that way.
I loved watching these two fall for each other. And I loved loved getting to know Rhode’s family. Catherine built and built the story up to a peak and had me hanging on by a thread trying to figure out who the bad guy was! I should have known she would include plenty of twists and turns along the way to keep me guessing! This was such a wonderful, swoony and suspenseful story! Now I am absolutely beside myself with excitement for the next book, Delicate Escape!

Catherine Cowles knows how to hit hard in the feels with her prologues, though this one didn't wreck me as much as some of her others thankfully. Still, Rhodes (h) suffers a devastating loss when she's 13 and fourteen years later, she's finally in a place where she feels like she can move forward and honor what she's lost. Helping her, cheering her on, and giving her lots of hilarious banter are her found family, including her BFF, adopted mom and grandmother, and foster siblings. The found family in this is DELIGHTFUL and heartwarming and hilarious. One of her foster siblings is also best friends with Anson (H), who's leading an important part of the rehab of Rho's home. Anson is also struggling with the demons of his past, except he's not ready to face them or to feel for anyone else. He's shut himself off of any type of deep relationship, even limiting his long-time friendships to a degree. But something about Rho's light shines right into the heart of his darkness.
Not just Anson has some darkness though and there's a lot more happening in this small town and with the past than folks realize...dun dun dunnnnnnn (sorry). It takes a bit but the suspense starts building, the dangers begin to materialize, and in true Cowles fashion, the later part of the book is quite the ride. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow drama, some om drama from h's ex and some hints that a couple other men in their town might be interested in h, and both are experienced (H has been celibate for a long time and h recently ended a casual relationship, with no details on whether they were actually physically intimate or not, but she mostly had casual relationships due to her hangups).
Importantly, CUTE ANIMAL SIDEKICK shelf has a nice addition. Rho has a foster puppy and he is the best. Every moment he was on page, my heart melted out of my chest and my own dogs got jealous (maybe not really). There were also bottle-fed kittens, just saying. Anson also bonds with Rho's pup and the preciousness. Anson and Rho were also precious together, though their introduction and subsequent follow-up interactions were rocky. Anson is guarded and prickly and while Rho has a hard time chancing letting people close enough to become permanent, she's also friendly, caring, and on the sunshine side, so pokes and prods at him. Anson's also protective though and that opens the door for the connection that gets established and that they build from, becoming friends to finally lovers. Yes, there are a couple of steamy scenes, including a couple of interrupted moments (poor Anson), a bit of bondage, and a toy as a helper.
What really hits though is the vulnerability of both main characters trying to open up after losing what they loved and the guilt that they still navigate related to those losses. Anson in particular takes time to peel back his layers and share deeper parts of himself. There are some hard conversations and grief support that happen. Not just between Rho and Anson, but also the supporting characters are there for them too.
Speaking of supporting characters, this is a first in a new series so it's setting the stage for the small town and for this new family, who I assume will mostly get their own HEAs. I adored Rho's siblings and her mom, but her adopted grandmother stole every scene she was in. The diamond painting, the sexual innuendos, and the love she had for her family, magnificent. Rho also has co-workers and other townspeople who surround her. You'll also be side-eyeing several characters btw, trying to figure out who's not on the up and up, good luck, I didn't get it right.
As much as I enjoyed this, I did feel like the pacing wasn't quite on point in places. It was hard to put my finger on. Some details were also repeated a few times, like how much the foster siblings had gone through, for example. I am looking forward to finding out what they've faced however. The build up to the climax was really good though, except the final reveal was a little OTT for me personally. I saw another friend found it to be a stretch in her review and I agree. But the resolution was solid and there is a HEA for our couple. The epilogue is a short jump ahead into the future and I loved it. I got choked up a little, it made me so happy, and there's a bonus scene that can be downloaded to see a little more of the couple. I'm excited to see where this series goes.
Anson is hands down my favorite Catherine Cowles character EVER!! Was it because he was grumpy or was it because he only wears black and hates color so this speaks to my soul? Probably both.
This was a great intro to Sparrow Falls! If you like romantic suspense, I think you'll like this book.
I do think this one started out a little slow for me... but then really picked up towards the end. The trauma that Rhodes + Anson went through was heartbreaking but I really think it made the connection between the two so strong.
I also really liked the nickname Reckless 🥹
Also give my Kye’s story immediately. Thanks 🫠😏

-small town -romantic suspense -brothers best friend -grumpy sunshine -past trauma -home renovation 🌶️🌶️
it was okay-ish. i didn’t love when anson acted like an animal that couldn’t be tamed, or the way he never ever spoke in full sentences.
“Go back to your room, I gritted out. “W? “Because I’m holding on to my last shred of humanity, and if you stand here in those goddamn shorts for another ten seconds, it’s going to snap.
this gave me the ick I am so sorry 😭😭 but anyways, moving on. I still really enjoyed it!! the mystery element made the story so much more interesting and as a boys of tommen stan, just know that the hurt x comfort trope will do it for me every timeeee. im more excited for thea and shep’s book, i have a feeling they’re going to be my favs 🤭
thanks to my bestie imene for reading it with me, i had the best time with u🥹🫶🏼
🌟Brief Summary: ‼️Grumpy/ Sunshine ‼️Murder Mystery Romance (my fav) ‼️Serial Killer ‼️Brothers Best Friend ‼️Broken H ‼️Both of them heal each other ‼️Small Town Romance ‼️8 Year Age Gap ‼️Lots of Family and Friends ‼️Tragedy and Loss
-This was the first in a new series. A family of foster kids and found family in a small town. There is lots of set ups for future books in the series and family antics. Everyone has serious issues from their pasts so it seems like all the books will be about their trauma and finding that one person that helps them find closure and heal.
-The first half of this book was kinda boring for me. I had trouble connecting to the characters BUT the second half pulled it all together for me.
-Both Anson and Rhodes have serious tragedies in their past and both are dealing with it very differently. When Anson is sent by his best friend and Rhodes older brother Shep to help restore a Victorian house Rho owns they meet for the first time and sparks fly immediately. But Anson isn’t ready to deal with his past OR the feelings Rho is stirring inside of him. But he is so drawn in by her that he just can’t help himself.
As Anson and Rho get closer both their pasts come back to haunt them and they lean on each other as they finally deal with their pasts. They help each other heal and find happiness and love that neither thought they would ever have again.
Things I Did 💔 Not Like -Would have liked more suspense -The first half didn’t grab me the way it should have. -The ending (the killer) was a bit unbelievable for me the way it all tied in. Maybe it could happen. Maybe it should make our couple even more connected but I was having trouble with who done it and how it all played out.
🙄why do h refuse security when their lives are in danger and why do they refuse to go the hospital when they are clearly hurt🙄 I wish authors would stop this nonsense.
🥀 Hero: Anson 35 yrs old Ex profiler for the FBI -Had never laid eyes on Rho until the book opens even though he was best friends with her brother Shep since college. Lost his sister 2 yrs ago due to tragedy that he blames himself for. Dark and broody. Definitely self absorbed at times and has lots of arrogance at times to.
-❤️ I love how much he loved Rho and how connected they were in the end. They were definitely soul mates. I liked how even though he didn’t want to profile anymore he did it to protect Rho. He was definitely willing to anything to protect her. Even if it took him a minute to pull his head out of his ass 😂
I love that he just couldn’t stay away from her 😂
I also love how he mans up for her and is willing to take the risk of love for her. I like a MAN THAT MANS UP🥳
🦋 Heroine: Rhodes -27 years old Lost family in tragic fire when she was 13 but she found a new family with her BFF Fallons family. She looks at the bright side of everything and lives for the moment but she still has unresolved issues that keeps her from really having a deep connection with others outside of her found family.
She saw into the deepest parts of Anson and truly understood him like no one else. I like that she didn’t let his asshole grumpiness push her away.
💭 POV: Duel first person
🔥 Burn Rate: Medium 50% first kiss and finger F
😡/😍 Angst level: Medium low I would have loved more suspense
❤️ Sexy times & Descriptive sex: Yes 🔥🔥🔥 Good chemistry between H and h A spicy belt scene 😮
🌓 Push/Pull: Yes Push away from H to h for around the first 55% I’ve seen some reviews saying enemies to lovers. DEFINITELY NOT. They are never enemies. H just doesn’t want to let anyone in after his trauma. He pushes her away and is an asshole but never enemies.
☠️ OW/OM Drama: No OWD Mild OM - h dated a guy for a few month and he wasn’t taking the split well so he came around a few times.
🤮 OW/OM Sex / Fluid or DNA Exchange: None Neither are w OP after meeting for H ts been years and for the h months but she hadn’t met the H yet.
🤬 Cheating: None
👰🏼♀ Virgins: None- -No history for the H other than it had been a long time. Roughly 2 years since his sisters death but could be even longer.
-h had a handful of non serious relationships in her life and had a few ONS in college. Recently she had been dating a local guy roughly 6-8 weeks. Nothing serious but there are mentions of them most likely having been intimate.
-No condoms -Talks of safety and birth control
⛈️Separation/ 3rd Act Breakup: None 🥳
ڱٲ⚠️հ🗡: Loss of loved one Serial killer Murder Stalking Death by fire Attempted murder Grief
🌈辱Dzܱ: Yes 6 months
🥂ᷡ: Yes engaged
FINAL THOUGHTS Overall I enjoyed this. The last 50% saved this for me. My connection to the last half was a lot stronger than the first half. And overall I really enjoyed the Romance to.
As far as the set up for future books.. I’m not sure I’m interested enough in the other characters dynamics. The fact that there is a 2 year time jump till the next book leaves me worried about how others (Especially Fallons) stories will play out and how old these characters will be.
There is a set up for EVERY TROPE imaginable including a Hockey romance 🙄 and the ever dreaded She pines for him her whole life while he pushes her away and sleeps with OW. FALLON 😳 I’m looking at you. I definitely won’t be reading her book. At all. I already don’t like the set up for Fallon and Kye. Manhoe bad boy and the only girl who understands him but she is to good for him so he can’t be with her. I especially don’t like that they have clearly been with OP 😡. Nothing new or unique here.
I might try Sheps book next and then I’ll see how this series plays out and if I will continue with it.
My opinion is just that MY OPINION. I know we all get passionate about our favorite reads and characters but we should respect each opinions a thoughts. ~Thank you

⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 🌶️🌶️ My first Catherine cowles book So much family. Found family everywhere Rho and anson. Rho has a traumatic past and anson is just a walking question mark was an FBI profiler but something happened to him in his past to make him go from carefree college kid to grumpy straight laced lone wolf now Anson being territorial. Downfall is I felt it took way too long to get Rho and Anson to actually talk and seem interested in eachother. I was almost lost His nickname for her:reckless Everyone is so happy to see Rho and there’s every guy in town coming around but I thought she always lived in town and saw everyone all the time anyway but everyone is making it seem like she just moved back from out of state Very much a spicier hallmark movie vibe. It’s like the hallmark and murder and mystery channel with spice The ending was kinda anti climatic, but still good. The bonus two years later epilogue. Pure chefs kiss.
Adorable romance! I did find the two very strong thriller plots towards the last 30% conflicting for a small town and I went in after reading all the missing pieces (obsessed) thinking this would be the same thriller to romance ratio so I think my expectations were a bit off for this one sadly!
However I still enjoyed my time and my gosh what gut wrenching back stories!
This is 75% romance with the thriller aspect coming in at the 70% mark!
Woah, these characters were deeply flawed but so incredibly different. I felt like they captured the real human experience. I loved the suspense and mystery aspect! There was a lot of cheek clenching and jaws ticking lmao. A little tid-bit I couldn't help but notice. 😂 Can anyone give me more Criminal Minds, murder mystery recommendations? I'm usually an exclusive romance reader, but could I be a thriller fan? 😬
3.5⭐️ All of Catherine Cowles books follow the EXACT same plot. I was really hoping for something even a little bit different because it’s getting boring. But I love her and her writing and characters and drama so I’ll never be able to stop reading her books 😅 but the story lines are so so predictable at this point
If you're a fan of Devney Perry's series "The Edens" then you should definitely read this. It's a romance/mystery/thriller book all wrapped up in one.
While I loved the romance plot with the main characters, it's really the relationship between siblings and the found family that really makes this book 🥹 There's a lot of characters in this book but everyone is so easily lovable and there's so many layers to each of these characters. This book really tugs at your heart strings 🥲
and the MMC, Anson ‼️‼️ A grump that turns into the sweetest man ever. I mean he literally rebuilt her library and added an antique ladder and all her favourite books. And that proposal?? Easily the sweetest proposal I ever read 😭 brb while i go buy the rest of the series 🏃♀️🏃♀
I have said it before, and I will say it again...I am a BIG fan of Catherine and her books. I have only read Lost & Found but plan on reading more of them once my TBR list dies down HAHA. But seriously, this book has been on my horizon since it was announced, and it did not disappoint. Catherine does a great job of introducing us to characters who are sort of broken in one way or another. They may put on a front like all is well but there is trauma underneath. And watching said characters find their people who help walk them through the trauma is so beautiful! I also love the added suspense in her books. I have found myself trying to determine who the bad guy is and have only guessed correctly once out of five books. She is great with the twists.
Rhodes is ready to address her past- or so she thinks. She is finally working on her dream of rebuilding her childhood home. The same home that burned with her whole family in it except for her. She wants to honor what they had and build it back up. Her brother has hired his best friend from college who is living in town now, Anson. She has heard so many funny stories that she thinks he is a different person when she meets him. He seems like a ghost of himself. She decides not to let him rain on her parade and keeps her eyes on the prize. However she can't seem to not see where he is on the site. She finds herself wanting to make him smile and crack that nut. She starts inviting him over for dinner without any intentions (at first). When her safety is at risk, he starts spending the night...on the couch...to her chagrin. She is so intrigued by this man who pulls her to him like a magnet but then just as easily can flip a switch and be cold as ice. But when she finally learns what has happened to him, she understands. She is willing to take what he will give her and she will try so hard to help him get on the other side of his grief. But now the killer that he had hunted and who made him who is now is back and he has his sights set on Rhodes. What are the chances this killer is from Sparrow Falls and is linked to her family's fire? What are the chances that he has been on Rhodes' trail for a while now? Will Anson be able to save her? Or will his worst nightmare happen again?
Anson is basically a ghost of himself at this point. He can't sleep. He has a handful of friends but none as good as Shep. Shep who has given him a job and knows his history but has agreed to keep it on the DL. Even to his brother who is the sheriff. Shep who invites him to family dinner without fail every week. Shep who hires him on to help his little sister with her family's house. Shep's family is a hodge podge in the best way. They all come from different backgrounds with different histories and Anson can't help but admire their strength. When he does in fact meet said little sister, Anson prevents her from getting hurt and now she is forever Reckless in his mind. She is beaufitul and resilient. He sees there are scars she is holding but she is facing them head on instead of hiding like him. But now he finds himself drawn to her like a bug to a light. He can't help it. He is mean and then goes to apologize. He pushes her away and then pulls her back in. And now he has found himself sleeping on her couch while he can hear her sleep in the other room. He finds himself there for her when has a nightmare. He finds himself in a situation he hasn't been in with a woman in a long time and yet instead of running he lays down the gauntlet that he can't give her everything but he is willing to try something. So they do. All while not telling Shep. They explore each other. He opens up to her like he never has before. He wants to be better for her. But then his worst nightmare comes true- the killer who took away his world is back and closing in on him fast. Now Anson starts to question a lot of things like Rhodes' family fire being a little too convenient. And the fact that there were several other fires in the area. And now Rhodes is missing and he HAS to find her before something happens or he won't be able to live with himself.
YALL this is was SOO good! Watching them help each other was so great. Catherine does a great job discussing grief and heavy topics and how it can look different for different people. I loved the side characters and can't wait to see how the cookies crumble with Rhodes' family and MAN am I pumped for Shep and Thea. Shep who could literally be with any woman in town but then one he asks out says no- reverse grump to sunshine anyone?? Is that what a black cat is LOL? If you haven't picked this one up yet, I highly recommend if you want small town, brother BF, grump to sunshine with a large drop of suspense thrown in the middle OH and some GREAT spice!!
3.5 Overall, this was fun and thrilling. I thought the characters had a good connection and love for each other.
This is your typical Catherine Cowles book with broken main characters and a killer trying to kill them.
My favorite part about this author’s book is the family. They have such a big family and they all have one another's backs. The dialogue with them, especially the grandma, was so funny.
The thriller part of this book was fine. I did think there was a lot going on, but it all worked well together.
My least favorite part of this book was close to thirty-year-olds sticking out their tongues at each other. Brother’s best friend Grumpy x Sunshine Trauma bonding-ish Small town Forced proximity Broken mmc I am excited for the rest of the series.
I love a blue collared hero, the brother’s best friend trope, and a grumpy introverted male lead so this book was right up my alley! Honestly, anything Catherine Cowles writes is amazing, but I feel like her books continue to get better and better every time she writes one. This one has her trademark suspense which I’ve grown to love even though romantic suspense isn’t what I seek out. It kept me on the edge of my seat and enhanced the relationship between Rhode and Anson there’s nothing quite like a protective male and it always makes me go feral! Overall, this is an excellent series starter and I’m so excited to see where she takes us in the next book. I have a feeling it’ll be amazing either way!

I can’t believe it took me this long to read one of Catherine Cowles’s books!
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆?
I was obsessed with all the layers within this story, but especially with the suspense and building romance. I found myself always a little bit on the edge of my seat wondering about Rhodes’s and Anson’s pasts and wondering who was currently threatening Rhodes.
AND the foster animals!? Absolutely melt my heart!!

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲?
With the suspense, Anson became so protective and needing to be there for Rhodes, so of course with a bit of forced proximity, the steam started coming off of the pages. I literally could not put this book down just from the budding romance alone.

Thank you Source Book Casablanca for this gifted copy in exchange for my honest opinions.
Alright, let me just say—this was my very first book by Catherine Cowles, and wow, have I been missing out! The murder mystery vibes totally gave me Mindfuck series flashbacks, especially with that Bogeyman plot. If you’ve read that, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Grumpy x Sunshine Brother’s Best Friend Love-Hate Dynamics 💘 Small Town Romance Forced Proximity Age Gap Found Family Protective Hero Broken Hero with a Dark Past
The blurb had me hooked from the start. I mean, who can resist a grumpy contractor who just happens to be your brother’s best friend? And then, BAM, throw in a murder mystery with accidents that are anything but accidental, and I’m all in. The mix of romance and suspense here is like bookish candy—seriously addictive!
First off, the tropes? Catherine Cowles must’ve been reading my mind because she packed in almost every trope I’m obsessed with.
Anson Hunt? He’s one of the grumpiest, broodiest heroes ever, and I was here for every second of it. His emotional walls were sky-high, but once they started to crumble? Oh boy, the feels hit hard. Rhodes is pure sunshine, slowly chipping away at those walls with her kindness and persistence. Their bond? Total swoon-fest. 😍
The suspense? Edge-of-your-seat stuff! I was biting my nails, trying to figure out who was behind all the chaos. And just when I thought I had it figured out, Catherine threw another curveball. It’s like living in a suspenseful small town where danger is lurking around every corner.
But, a tiny but—the pacing was a bit off in places. There were moments where it slowed down too much, and I was itching for things to pick back up. Plus, the final twist was a little over the top for me. Not a dealbreaker, but it did make me raise an eyebrow. 😅
Now, let’s talk about the found family! The foster siblings and that hilarious grandma totally stole the show. I was cracking up at their banter and antics. Lolli, the grandma, is a total gem with her witty remarks and unfiltered humor. I’m so ready for more from this squad in the next books!
And can we take a moment for the CUTE PUPPY? Rhodes foster pup melted my heart. Every scene with that little furball had me grinning from ear to ear, and the bond he formed with Anson? Too precious for words. 🐾
In short, Fragile Sanctuary was a rollercoaster of emotions with the perfect blend of romance and suspense. Even though this was my first Catherine Cowles book, it’s definitely not going to be my last. 💕
anson and rhodes are in sparrow falls and both of them have tragic pasts. rhodes is coming back to face hers, but anson has been running away from his. he’s sworn off any type of connection with anyone because he’s afraid to get hurt again. but rhodes knocked down all his defenses and he can’t help but fall for her, especially since both of their pasts are coming back to haunt them.
they were so perfect separately and as a couple. I loved meeting all the new side characters and the big family vibes of the small town. rhodes is incredibly strong and that’s my fav type of fmc. and when anson finally has his “fuċk it moment I MELTED.
the suspense was sooo good in this one. I couldNOT figure out who the big bad was. catherine did such an amazing job at keeping me guessing until the very end.
🎧 the narration in this was PERFECT. andi arndt read for rhodes and she was so perfect. I felt her emotions the whole time listening. and zachary webber IS anson. I was actually blown away by his performance. I highly recommend the audiobook as well as reading with your eyes!

“Home is wherever you are, he whispered. “You’re my sanctuary. Where I feel peace. Where I feel seen. Don’t want anything more.
Ahhh! We have the start of a new Catherine Cowles series and I couldn’t be happier. Fragile Sanctuary gave me everything I wanted and then some. This is the start of a new small town series and it has forced proximity, brother’s best friend, grumpy x sunshine, age gap, touch her and d!e, found family (w/ adopted + foster siblings too), a serial unaliver, a broken hero, and a cute dog and hilarious grandma as well!
Rhodes and Anson are absolutely perfect together and they’re instantly a new favorite Catherine Cowles couple. The way these two have both been through so much, have lost loved ones, and find comfort and safety with one another was just so beautiful to see. This is an emotional read that will pull on your heartstrings right from the prologue in classic Catherine style and then just never lets you go as it takes you on their journey!
Anson is an ex profiler who is working construction now in Sparrow Falls with Rho’s brother. They first meet when he’s surveying the house project he’s about to begin and thinks she’s sneaking around on the property, not realizing she’s the owner. They don’t get off on the right track, plus his grumpy attitude and closed off-self doesn’t really help when she tries to get to know him. But soon they realize they have a lot in common and when her safety is put in danger, he jumps right in. The healing journey these two go on together was honestly everything, and then the steam, the side characters, Lolli the diamond art grandma who isn’t afraid to let everyone know how comfortable with sex she is (much to her grandchildren’s chagrin), Biscuit the rescue doggie, Anson’s profiler mindset, the protectiveness, the way he calls her “Reckless, please this book was perfect. I loved this book so much and cannot wait for the rest of the books in the series, my mind is already spinning with some future couplings and I can’t wait to see more of these characters and this new small town again soon!
I had an audio ALC and absolutely ate up this narration by Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber! They instantly brought Anson and Rho to life for me! Fragile Sanctuary is out May 16th, all thoughts in this review are my own.
My first Catherine Cowles book and what a journey it was!
Rhodes and Anson clashes from the first meet itself and you can scent the chemistry these two had from miles away. Both of them suffered horrific losses in their past but where Rho counts her blessings and try to move on and find peace again, Anson is quite happy to stay in his suffering and reject all and any human interaction. Guess what, nothing works for him where Rho is concerned. It was quite hilarious.
I seriously couldn’t get enough of them. Rho supported and uplifted Anson and tried to fill his life with colours but unknown to her was the fact that her just being in his life made it bearable for him. And he was so protective of her despite his grumpy ways and reservations.
They had this connection and Rho was seriously amazing. So loyal, sweet and supportive. Biscuit was hilarious and I loved that dog to bits! And Rho’s amazing mismatch family? They added so much flavour and colour to the book. I loved each and every one of them and need books for all of them.
The suspense was done really well and when the killer was revealed I was shocked. There were many emotional lines that touched my heart and did I mention the beautiful bonds each of them had with each other? Not only Rho and Anson but Rho and her family too. Can’t wait to read more from this author.
