Would you betray your kingdom for your soulmate?

Shapeshifter Theodori Hunter Wolfborn must conquer the kingdom of Siacchi to prove his worth. To do so, he kidnaps a man known for his strategic genius a champion in the much-revered and ancient game of dominance and submission, Cesse. A man who will help Theo secure a clean, bloodless victory.

Only, Theo has kidnapped the wrong person.

Luka Lockehart, renowned Cesse player, has trained all his life to hide his stigmatized abilities to shapeshift, guided by the unwavering hand of his mother. He never expected he would have to put his training into practice when he is kidnapped by a northern warlord and he certainly didn’t expect to find this man this monster so attractive. Now he must hide his feelings and his identity, for if Theo finds out that he is not the man he says he is, it is not only Luka’s life that is forfeit, but his entire country.

Luka and Theo are locked in a deadly game. As the secrets between them only continue to grow, so does the unmistakable pull they feel toward each other, even when such feelings might very well ruin all they’ve ever hoped to achieve.

Something has to break. It will be their kingdoms or their hearts.

When they're not writing (a rare sight), they're entertaining their fur babies or listening to audiobooks at two times speed (highly recommend to meet your ŷ goal).

Holy smokes!! I fell in love with the characters and the world of CHECKMATE right from the first page, and it didn't let me go 😭❤️❤️

I'm always a sucker for enemies-to-lovers, and this one was particularly tasty. Raised in Siacchi, a culture which values rationality and cold logic above all, Luka is a renowned cesse (a.k.a., fantasy chess 😆) champion and strategic genius - though to his eternal frustration, not quite so renowned as his rival, Evland Childes. Under the surface, however, Luka has spent his whole life mired in shame under the thumb of his cruel and politically ambitious mother, and struggling to hide that he's an impyassus - an animal shapeshifter - as impyassi are viewed as subhuman in Siacchian culture, due to their "base and animal" nature...

Across the border in snowy Kitera, meanwhile, shapeshifters are revered for their strength and prowess in battle. Talented young general and ball of repressed emotions powerful wolf-shifter Theo is eager to finally prove himself by conquering the legendarily impenetrable Siacchian capital, and decides to kidnap the country's finest strategic genius to do it: Evland Childes. Except - well, er... he accidentally ends up with Luka, instead. 😂

The relationship between Theo and Luka is deliciously messy and fraught with tension, and I loved watching them bicker over games of cesse as both of them tried to outmaneuver each other and end up - ahem - on top. 😂 (Speaking of, this one is SPICY, and right from the get-go too, LOL, so have your hand-fans and a cool iced drink at the ready! 👀🌶) It was really touching watching Luka begin to unpick some of his internalized shame, and I was biting my nails watching Theo fight against his growing feelings for 'Evland,' all the while not knowing that the truth had to come out sooner or later. The supporting cast are an absolute treat, too, and I'm really looking forward to hopefully seeing more of Xyla and Octavian (arrogant little bastard that he is 😂) in future books.

I'll definitely be snapping up the next installment as soon as it comes out - if you're a fan of queer enemies-to-lovers with plenty of spice and characters who would rather be shot dead than discuss their own emotions, & who are nevertheless dragged kicking and screaming into emotional vulnerability anyway LMAO, then I highly recommend you check this one out!

I love a good omegaverse and this is GOOD! I was so excited when I was allowed to read the ARC because I had been eyeing this book already and KNEW I was going to buy it.

This is a win. I'm in for this journey. Right from the start it's spicy. I was like "Okay Luka!" Wink wink.

You all do yourself a favor, get this book!

KD tabith delivers what we've all been waiting for: SEXY! CHESS!
i'm so impressed with how easily this book comes together, because seriously- this book balances it all. political intrigue, romantic tension, magic, love triangles, and, of course, "sesse"- a disturbing variation on chess that lends itself well as a motif for the plot and the romance. the characters are so lovable (and so badly behaved- which makes them even better). gotta be one of my favorite fantasy books i've read this year!

I cant say enough good things about this book! The story world draws you in like an old friend, and the characters are lovable, well-developed, and frustratingly themselves in all the ways people are. K.D. Tabith is a born storyteller who weaves effortless poetry and humor into a page-turning, intriguing plot. Themes of love, war, friendship, and an underlying message of self-acceptance make this book a must read. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy a tale of forbidden romance and shape shifting?

ARC review. Oh good lord, I knew I was going to like this as I do so love enemies to lovers, but stupid cliffhangers get in the way of my happy ending. Now I’m going to be waiting on pins and needs for the next book and I want to see Luka and Theo happily together and lovin on each other. Dang it!
I really hope we don’t have to wait to long for the second book, as I need more!

Such an interesting world built around a game and messages passed through the game. The characters were so well detailed and developed. I loved the interesting perspectives of way the characters felt about their shapeshifting. The love story was unique and the angst was bitter sweet. I loved this world!!

I had really, really high hopes for this book. And as a whole I suppose it was fine. It was smutty it was spicy ect ect. But the writing felt a bit on the stilted side. It didn't feel as fluid as I would have liked? If there had just been a little more polishing and maybe a little more of someone telling the author "hey maybe this sentence could be reworked?" Then maybe it would have been a more enjoyable read.

I'm not by any means saying that the story is bad. It's... interesting? I'm not too fond of the mentions at the beginning of Luka being essentially barely legal when he started playing sex chess. Because that's the game they play. Sex chess. I definitely wasn't expecting there to be sex chess. I know the book is titled checkmate but, it's not what I was expecting.

A little more polish and a little more finesse and this book could have potentially been a four or five star for me. But as it stands the book is just, okay? Which is a shame because I had a lot of high hopes for it when I had heard about it. I'm looking forward to seeing what the author's next project is in hopes that it reads a bit better.

Checkmate by K. D. Tabith is all new to me - new-to-me-author, and I really enjoyed this original fantasy book. It's the first in a series so it does end in a cliffhanger. Luka reminds me of Timothee Chalamet, whom I'm obsessed with so this was an added plus to the story. I'm excited about the next book in this series.

Oh my goooood.

I got a free ARC of Checkmate by KD Tabith! I'm not into like, viking stuff, or werewolf stuff, OR even erotica, so I really just kind of applied on a whim because I liked her Tiktoks.

Jesus christ.

This is KD Tabith's debut novel, but they've got a lot of writing experience beforehand, and the first thing that jumped out at me was how good the prose is. I'm sorry this is such a low bar to cross, but one thing I learned about books I find on Tiktok is that the prose is rarely compelling, even from a major publishing house. I read this as a chaser after a Murderbot Diaries binge and it still felt unbelievably good to read, so jot that down.

Second, the spice: If you like the Captive Prince, this is going to hit. Every aspect of the worldbuilding and the relationship oozes sexuality, the book is practically ABOUT sex, but there are no sex scenes. It creates a delicious sort of tension knowing how close sex is at all times, but the main characters never quite touch it. Edging in a good way.

The tension between the main characters is fascinating. It's technically instalust, in that they're both experiencing a psychosexual compulsion towards each other, but it creates SO many opportunities because of how differently they experience it. Theo sees it as a loss of control that he has to violently lash out at, while Luka isn't nearly as affected and thus doesn't have the instincts to fight it beyond avoiding an immediate threat.

The characters are so compelling individually too, which is always such a romance-killer. Theo is an obsessive perfectionist with a short temper, his overwhelming shows of force on his way to proving himself leaving people afraid and cautious of him. He's neurotic about the influence others have on him, and is constantly jumpy when he's threatened by the idea he can be influenced by other people. Which makes it so yummy when he's up against Luka.

Luka is hyper-aware of the influence people have on him, but he sees it more like an investment he has to make worthwhile. He is constantly trying to prove he deserves the control exerted on him. Naturally, when Theo sees fit to indulge him, he plunges into his obsessive tendencies, the self-soothing habits of cesse training ping-ponging against how his mistaken identity grinding against his nerves. He tries to tell himself he has A Plan, but in the end he passively gets carted around by the whims of Theo and his second, making it all the clearer the only thing that actually gets him anywhere is who he is as an individual. He's suddenly got a lot of autonomy at the end of the book, so I'm excited to see him flourish on his own terms.

The "I won't have my judgement be dictated by others" VS "I am a premium product of a premium society, aren't I?" tension would work in literally any setting, so this is absolutely a series worth keeping up with.

5/5, one of the best I've read this year.

Fated mates on opposing sides in an oncoming war.

I enjoyed this story more than I thought I would.

As I’ve been reading a lot more lately, I’m noticing patterns where the writing isn’t up to par and drags the story down. This has left me hesitant to read a lot of stories nowadays, however, this isn’t the case with Checkmate. Checkmate’s good prose was the main reason I kept reading and finished within a couple days.

The world building was well written, and by the end, I wanted to know more. It wasn’t an exposition dump trying to explain everything all at once. Different terminology was introduced and sometimes it would be explained while other times, you’d naturally just figure it out due to the context of the scene. It was a good balance of when to show and when to tell.
The concept of a chess-like board game that branched off and influenced other cultures was creative. (Cesse and Ravage)

Though this is a fated mates romance story with plenty of tension to lead to intense spicy romantic scenes, that’s not the focus. The build up is definitely there, but instead, the male leads bonded through playing the board game Ravage while each having their ulterior motives.
This felt more realistic and made sense since they’re basically supposed to be enemies.

I did enjoy Luka’s character a lot. The way his mother treated him was awful as he had to live his entire life to meet her selfish expectations. It was nice to see his character develop overtime.

The story goes at a steady pace as the tension slowly revs up. Both Luka and Theo are not only playing the board game to fish for information, but also playing it in real life. Both know they need to betray the other, but who will be able to do it first?

The only thing that lowers this from a 5 to a 4 is Theo’s character. It just seemed hard to believe that someone of his military prowess and skills at Ravage would be easily duped by so many. Especially since he tries to repress his feelings because getting close to anyone creates a weak spot for him.
There were also a few errors such as typos and missing words (especially towards the end). And a jarring error of referring to the wrong character during a conversation.

I will definitely continue to read onto the next in this series. If you’re looking for a decently written romance that has meat to its story, then check this out.

Checkmate by K.D. Tabith builds an instantly immersive world around a game similar to chess in strategy but not in substance. The deeper meanings behind each move parallel the romantic and sexual tension between the two leads in this dual POV enemies-to-lovers romantasy.

I found myself drawn into the world of Cesse and Ravage from the very first introduction, but there's so much more to the world that unfolds, such as how shapeshifters are viewed by each society and the prejudice and class system. This isn't some story of two men who fall in love over a chess game, though I did find myself falling for their relationship through their games both with pieces and a board and with each other and their kingom.

Like the game Checkmate is based on, Luka and Theo's relationship moves through a series of checks, from misdirection, cunning observation, to intellect battling with desire, all progressing to their inevitable conclusion: mate. And, in this case, mate means so much more than victory in a game.

The problem is that there's so much established to be at stake to make them avoid such a relationship. What's keeping them from being together is far from arbitrary. They both have duties that make it feel impossible sometimes.

Despite enemies-to-lovers being such a popular trope that I keep finding but am not a big fan of, this felt different. The enemies part felt very much at battle with their own desires from the very beginning. There wasn't a sense of hatred between them to the point that some books make me uncomfortable. Their dynamic flowed naturally and kept me reading.

While Luka and Theo's relationship is the main focus of the story and ties into their games, there's a lot going on in the background too that comes together at the end, making the story feel rich and layered. It's like how real life isn't just something that revolves around two people but has so many moving parts.

There are a lot of surprises and danger in here, but enough of the sweet and deeply compelling relationship to keep it balanced. The only thing to consider is that this is the first book in a series, so their relationship feels like it's just coming into itself fully when the book ends. This also means that there's a resolution to part of the story but a cliffhanger leading to more.

Overall, this is an intricate and intriguing story with characters that felt real and it's written in a beautiful yet easy to read manner that made it a quick and satisfying read.

Unfortunately, I didn't connect with the characters. I struggled to get immersed in this world from the beginning. It was a lot of political information dumped in the beginning, but at the same time, it wasn't enough because I still have more questions than answers.

I probably butchered how to say some of the words because there is no glossary to help guide me in pronunciation.

It was interesting to see how Chess is described in this case as Cesse for Siacchians and Ravage for Kiterians, but that's about it. What does Cesse/Ravage have to do with how politics is run in their cities or what it can do to win a war didn't click for me.

Also, the romance felt lacking. There was smut don't get me wrong, and the use of Cesse for smutty advancements after who won the round was fun, but there was no smut for the actual main characters. It follows the soulmate trope, and Theo knows Luka is his mate, but he fights this urge. He was set in his troops to kill him at the end with almost no remorse. There was no interaction apart from constantly playing Cesse/Ravage where there was any indication of romance developing. Just because it is their soulmate doesn't mean there can't be an outside influence for them to fall into each other.

Theo reminded me a little of a manchild. Constantly whining and complaining but does almost nothing to change anything. He depends on his second in command that ends up betraying him. Theo spends day and night in his tent for weeks with his prisoner, Luka, playing Cesse/Ravage (Chess) with the excuse to get information but the information is incredibly minor and basically lacks support with how the second in command ends up betraying them.

WOULD HAVE RATED 5 STARS IF NOT FOR SO MANY ERRORS

I really liked this, actually. Sadly, I had to bump my rating from 5 to 4 due to so many errors that affected the flow too much and made a lot of parts so very confusing (wonky timelines, inconsistencies, loopholes in the events, etc). Apart from that, there were a lot of typos as well, so actually, 4 stars is generous because the number of errors made an otherwise amazing book rather hard to read in some places. Which is why I wanted to confirm with the author if there was a final copy since I only have the ARC version from Booksprout, but after waiting for some time and not getting any response at all, well, I had no choice. I needed to finalise my review.

If not for all the errors, I actually highly recommend this. The characters were endearing and extra points for them being so intelligent that their exchanges were always delightful. I was very tempted to deck another star for the complete lack of sex between them, haha. But then again, it wasn’t my fault as there was no indication whatsoever in the tags that this was a continuing book of a trilogy and it was misleadingly tagged: HAPPILY EVER AFTER, when in fact, we don’t get any HEA here, not even a HFN because this book ends on a cliffhanger. I really wish I was given a choice about that, because I don’t normally pick up incomplete series books yet. But, oh well. At least, this was really good. I do hope all the mistakes get fixed in the final published copy because it comes off as very slipshod otherwise and therefore takes away a huge chunk of the story’s and the author’s credibility. I definitely look forward to the next instalment, though again, I still feel a little miffed that I was sort of baited into thinking this was a standalone. I really hope book 2 and 3 makes up for that! :)

Still. Thanks ever so much for the chance to read this in advance! <3

The worldbuilding of the Siacchians and Kiterians and the history of Cesse/Ravage was interesting to learn about.

Though the book was hard to get through at times, especially the beginning was very slow (something I generally struggle with in fantasy books). There was a lot of politics and talk and not much action. I sympathised with both Luka and Theo, though failed to connect/get invested in their love story/journey.

I'm not a big fan of the "love at first sight" or whatever you would call the soul mate equivalent of that. As it takes away a lot of build-up and pay-off. I have to get a feeling for them first before I'm told one is already super smitten with the other.

I would have liked to see a bit more of Xyla and Luka's friendship and past to connect with them a bit more. Same goes for Luka and his younger brother. We only met him once and Luka didn't think much about him throughout this book. And this became very apparent especially at the end of the book, where his brother was mentioned again and it didn't evoke any feelings in me.

The last quarter was more enjoyable and action packed, though the twist didn't surprise me. That's not a necessity, though. It was still nice to read.

There was a surprising amount of smut, and even more surprising considering that the only two people who are not getting it on are the main couple. But since this is the first book of a series, I do not mind.

I'd also like to say that I would have appreciated a glossary.

“No others. No one else. Only you.

“Only me.

Oh, wow. I’m struggling to collect my thoughts. I’m writing this immediately after finishing this book, so bear with me as I try to write a comprehensive review.

This was phenomenal. Legitimately, the only bad thing about this book was that it wasn’t longer. Checkmate isn’t even out yet and I’m already on the ground, shriveled up and dying for the sequel.

The story is very Beauty and the Beast. Enemies to (almost) lovers, with the addition of fated partners. Mix the concoction with deceptions and betrayals, and you end up here. I loved it. I don’t think I’ve been this excited for a series since I read Kellen Graves Rowan Blood a couple months ago. I don’t want to say much else about this book, other than please check it out.

Though I did not find much of the last act surprising in the sense that I didn’t see it coming, it still kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen next. Then…the book ended. Earnestly, I will be thinking about it for the next couple weeks, and am looking forward to reading it again once it officially releases.

I was provided an e-ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.

First off, thank you author for providing an ARC for an honest review!

The world building in Checkmate was so riveting I couldn't turn myself away! (Seriously I couldn't put it down and read it in one whole sitting!!!) The characters are all unique in some way and I thoroughly enjoyed picking up new pieces of their personalities as the story progressed.

The way the two different chess-like games that are introduced are compiled in such a way that makes you want to learn all the moves and keeps you interested in the possible outcomes! (I legit would be waaay to excited to read a rule book about them or even a side snippet of Luka first learning Cesse and Theo learning Ravage hehe). Cesse and Ravage absolutely contrast each other in the way of winning strength yet also completely compliments each other was captivating! It because highly enjoyable to read how Luka uses his Cesse skills to apply to Ravage and how it would bring him closer to Theo.

I loved being able to follow both Lukas's and Theo's point of views since they both have different ways on viewing the world and how they want to get to their end goal. I cannot WAIT for the sequel to continue exploring their journey and what mayhem awaits.

My only complaint is I'd appreciate a glossary in the book since there are a lot of unique terminology for this world.

ARC review: Even though my rating is only 3 stars I did enjoy this story. There are just a few things that irked me about it.

The beginning of the book was a very slow start and by the time the action began it kind of felt lacklustre. When Luka comes face to face with Theo, Theo has instant attachment due to them being mates. I don’t mind this trope in certain aspects but I found there was no reason for these characters to really grow into love for one another because of it.

A lot of time that happens at the camp was explained in passing events, when I felt this could have been done on the page in detail to give more of a bond between the two main characters. Not only that but other than a heated kiss all the smut in the book felt like it was just thrown in there for no reason, it wasn’t even between the two fated mates. I understand that this is the first book but if the spice had been removed completely it wouldn’t have made a difference.

I did enjoy the twist in the book, although it was a tad predictable it was still enjoyable. Although I do have my gripes with this book the story did have me interested enough to keep reading and I may yet pick up that second book. I do want to know what happens next.

Very compelling fantasy story

All I could think of as I was reading this book was how compelling the story was. K. D. Tabith has done a marvelous job of building this world and its people and rules and then turning those things on their heads. Basing so much on a type of chess that is so important to the people that they have built their society around it could have easily come across as just a gimmick. Instead Tabith has done a great job of planning things out and connecting them together so that this idea adds to the experience in a positive way. Theodori and Luka seem like such opposite characters in the beginning but through some games of Cesse and some surprising developments they find out more about each other. I really didn’t know how Tabith was going to manage to get these two together as it became closer and closer to the end of the book. I’m not going to give anything away but I’m very happy with the way Tabith solved this Romeo and Juliet type of situation. The tale is not over and it left me with lots of questions but not unhappy, rather looking forward to the next chapter. A sign of a good book for me!

This book took a little to get into, but once I was hooked, it was an amazing read. Luka has a great amount of snark, and it's obvious how much he is used to relying on his intelligence and strategy specifically when it comes to cesse. I found his struggle for control fascinating while he battled to keep his other side hidden. The way he reacted to violence and danger felt so realistic as someone that had grown up in a pacifist society, and it was interesting to see how that bumped against Theo's world. And Theo's enforced distance from everyone created a fun interplay between the two of them. There was a lot of back and forth as they both dealt with their own battles, Luka with his shame over who he was, and Theo with his fear of letting people in, and it was great to watch them both grow. The world setup shows a lot of potential, and I am looking forward to diving into the next book and see where they go from here!

Honestly, I have no idea how to rate this. I kind of liked it, but I didn’t fully vibe with it.

It was slow to get into. A lot of new words were introduced but not explained right away, so I kept guessing their meanings. It should’ve piqued my interest and pulled me in, but it didn’t. Overall, the flow wasn’t there—the book felt stilted. Yet, somehow, I finished it pretty quickly.

I liked the world-building; the concept is solid. And sex chess? Freaking fun. The whole game of submission and dominance was intriguing.

Luca is an interesting character—his self-repression due to being a beast in a world where that’s frowned upon adds depth. It’s fascinating (and pretty messed up) to see him repeat the twisted things society has fed him about his own species.

Theo is okay. It’s just hard to believe that a warlord and skilled strategist could be played so easily by so many people, especially considering his traumatic past and major betrayal.

i deeply enjoyed this book!! i'm not sure what i expected going in, but it wasn't what i got and i was happy about that!! the whole concept of the games of cesse and ravage was fascinating as was the world as whole!! world building is so important in novels and so often do people neglect that in their writing, so i was pleased that in this novel that wasn't something i ever had to worry about once!! the only criticisms i have are there were some glaring inconsistencies that led to me being confused a few times in the plot, but i'm sure that'll be fixed with edits before publishing as this is an advanced reader's copy. it also seemed like it would add a lot to the story to add more povs than just luka and theo's, but even without them, i really truly have nothing but positive things to say about this book. i Will be buying myself a hard copy once it is released!!

I need to be honest and say I didn’t finish this book. The first few chapters, which were heavily focused on exposition, were difficult for me to get through. I ended up jumping ahead to a random section in an attempt to connect with the characters and develop an emotional attachment. This way, I hoped to go back and make sense of all the political aspects later on. It didn’t work out as planned. I ended up in smut territory—it was well-written and spicy—and so I kept reading from there. I still wasn’t attached enough to the characters to go back and start again, and without a glossary of all the terms, I found myself a bit too overwhelmed (my own fault for not pushing through the start) and didn’t have the connection to make it to the end.

I was pleasantly surprised by this debut novel. At first it took a bit to piece everything together, the world building in the beginning felt a bit choppy and confusing. Also I had this idea in my head that when it came to winning the chess games and securing dominance it was just in status. So colour me surprised when it transitioned to a spicy scene!
But once I got into the flow of the story I understood the meaning behind the chess games, the moves and countermoves.
I really enjoyed Luka’s character, he’s very snarky and intellectual which makes for some entertaining moments for sure! Theo is also an interesting character although I’m really hoping we get more of his backstory because I’m not connecting with him as much.

Overall, I did really enjoy the story and I’m looking forward to the sequel!

"Let's play then."

What a fantastic debut novel !! I was blown away with this fantasy novel - brilliant world building that's woven into the storytelling with ease. You pick up quite quickly on the who's and why's ....and then the characters. There's plenty of depth there, but we only get a few hints....obviously as the series progresses, we'll find out more. This is a slow burn between the MC's .....yet it's still somewhat steamy ! But the main feature really, is the twists in the story.....truly had me captivated !!! This is a great start to a new fantasy series and I can't wait on the next book !!

This book offers some fascinating and intricate world building, interesting characters, and all in all a solid foundation for a story that has further to go. The relationship dynamics have lots of potential, and it’s hard not to be fascinated with the players in this game the premise is intriguing in its own right, and there are nuances of personality that bring life to the larger scaffolding in ways that make the book hard to put down once started. Definitely looking forward to seeing where things go next.

The author did such a good job of setting the scene and the mood in a world driven by the machinations in a game. Add to it an identity that puts one at risk. Getting mistakenly kidnapped and working from that vantage point with someone that he not only has to conceal things from but finds attractive. So many dilemmas. This was good and I am sure the next story will be just as intriguing. I am looking forward to it.

Queer representation 🌈🌈🌈🌈

Ok so this read was everything I love! There was a lot of queer representation, tension and a slow burn that is yet to fully burst into flames (I neeeeeed to get my hands on the second book)!!! There was delicious mind games and unexpected twists.

Theo and Luka were so enjoyable to read and I loved how they each experienced their interactions, and like polar opposites of each other in the way they saw the world.

If you love a shifter queer romance, this one is for you!
