From award-winning author Laura Gehl, a sparkling, lyrical picture book about the magic of an early snow.
It’s dawn and there is snow all around. The wonder of winter’s first snowfall brings the magic of changing seasons and sees a family sharing the perfect snow day with coziness and togetherness from dawn to dusk.
I loved this one and it is my Caldecott choice as it is a joyful child family centered read and the rhyming text tells of the joyful experience of seeing and playing in snow. Can digitally created art win the Caldecott? And if anyone has read some of previous reviews criticizing digital art I totally love the art in this title, right from the young boy with his hands on the frosted window wanting to see the snow. The illustrator, Sonia Sanchez, has done a number of picture books and I am off to find them.
This lyrical picture book is a beautiful ode to the snow. Told from the point of view of child, this story follows a day in his life, beginning when he wakes up to see his yard blanketed in white and ending with a warm fire, snuggles, and I love yous. Laura Gehl’s soothing rhyme and Sonia Sánchez’s dreamy illustrations in a muted color palette make this the perfect winter bedtime story
These pages are like a child's ode to snow and open up many different wonders the white world creates.
Written in poetic form, this book follows a child's day in the snow. It begins from inside the house as the child gazes to the white world outside. From here, it's outside and into the world. All sorts of snow activities are explored, each one familiar to most readers. There's a sense of wonder, of fun and humor, and even family and a respect for natures throughout the read.
The text flows very well and is fitting as a read-aloud for the intended age group. Readers, who are fairly sure of their words, can also hit this one on their own without too many issues. It does a lovely job at combining fun situations in the words with an enjoyable atmosphere thanks to the style. Anyone who enjoys spending time in the snow will smile, at least, a couple times.
The illustrations allow each scene to bring across the activities and lovely landscape. The family scenes offer warmth and a little, silly situation humor to keep the tone light and fun.
It's a atmospheric read which invites to playing in the snow outdoors and enjoying the moments with family...or simply getting lost in fun in the snow.
I’m thrilled to share another book by one of my favorite children’s authors, Laura Gehl. In her newest book, her lyrical and rhyming prose celebrates a snowy day. I remember the joy of our children as they would wake up and look outside to see snow covering the ground. As an adult, I love the stillness of a new snowfall and the beauty of the flakes slowly falling from the sky.
A boy, his dad, and their dog enjoy a morning in the snow from building a snowman to sledding down the hill to a snowball fight and building a snow fort. A day playing in the snow is a day full of fun that must end with some warm cookies and snuggles by the fire. On the last page, the child is tucked into bed which also makes this a great bedtime story as well.
Sonia’s illustrations show the beauty of a snowy day and the excitement on the child’s face. Celebrate the joy of a mid-winter snowfall by reading SNOW IS with your child.
Any family who has enjoyed the delights of playing in a fresh snowfall will be reminded of those experiences when reading this book. Using the power of simile, the author highlights all the things that snow can be to a child and his family. Phrases such as "Snow is your heart pounding hard in your chest" or "Snow is a dance and a twirl and a glide" create beautiful pictures in the reader's mind. A patient parent participates in the activities fully, even though he may wish to be inside enjoying his breakfast. A simple, yet powerful reminder of the wonder to be found in the world around us if we take the time to enjoy it. Don't be surprised if the child reader immediately wishes for snow! Teachers will find much here to inspire young writers.
I enjoyed this cute, rhyming, snowy day story! I loved seeing all the different fun aspects of a snow day portrayed here and the artwork that went along with it. I loved seeing the excitement the little boy had over everything and that he had some fun with his parents and little sibling. There are some bigger/more complicated words so it’s not the best for a newer reader to read on their own, but it would be great for a parent/teacher to use for a story time!
Summary:
Snow has fallen and a little boy can’t wait to go out and play in it!
Perfect book as I sit here watching beautiful flakes fall!!! Author Gehl has penned a sweet rhyming story of a young child's happiness at a snowfall worthy of sledding through and catching on his tongue! Illustrator Sanchez conveys the wonder, vibrancy and depth of new snow using shades of 4 colors. It's the perfect winter day story!!! And of course, I especially love the text that doesn't have to work hard at bringing the perfect snow day to the rhymes: "Snow is a plop and a flop and a squish."
this one just didn't do it for me. i found the repetition here to be kind of a drag and that the metaphors were not really effective. snow IS the footprints in the snow? how? snow IS the breakfast still waiting inside? inside as in... away from the snow? I can get on board with a rhyming book but not at the expense of meaning. the limited red/blue/white/black color palette was pleasing and easy to look at. idk how i felt about the loose and heavy cross hatching tho
I received an ARC of this book for my honest opinion.
As a lover of snow, I love this book! I love the use of color throughout, the blues, reds, pinks, and browns do a wonderful job of showing the cold and warmth of the winter season. This book also does a wonderful job of expressing all five of the senses with its descriptive, rhyming text. A great, simple book to get ready or celebrate the wonder and joy of the snowy season.
This gorgeous, lyrical picture book captures the essence of a beloved snow day, from the moment a child wakes up until the moment they go to sleep. The gentle rhythm and rhyme add to the story’s cozy, soothing vibe and make this a great choice for a bedtime book that kids will want to read again and again! This would also make an excellent classroom read-aloud, with curricular tie-ins ranging from the seasons to poetic devices.
Written as a poem, this beautiful book captures the exuberance and simple delights of a fresh snowfall perfectly. From the rhyming language and engaged senses of the text to the limited color palette with pops of red, this grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. You feel everything right alongside the main character because it is describing everything you feel when you see snow has fallen outside. A delightful snowy day book.
A boy is excited that it snowed. He plays outside with his father, builds a fort and enjoys the winter day. Told in two line rhyming verse which perfectly capture that first big snow of the year.
I liked the illustrations, a perfect book to read on a cold winter day - there's an illustration where the storm has blown a door open and there is snow in the hall - I hate the situation but love the picture. It's a mixed race family.
Absolutely adore this rhyming book about a snowy day! I like that it starts with a feeling before the snow has fallen and goes all the way through to bedtime. Favorite lines are probably the opening page :"Snow is a feeling the moment you wake. snow is a stillness before the first flake." and this one halfway through: "Snow is a blanket that covers the hill. Snow is a trudge and a push and a thrill." Snow is a well-covered theme in picture books, but this is a delightful and fun new take.
The warm and cool palette of this rhyming picture book beautifully reflects the love and joy that infuses each wintry spread. I enjoyed spending the day in the snow with the book's young family as the spare, lyrical text ushered them from the excitement of that first look out the window to a cozy kid-and-pet pile at bedtime. The perfect read-aloud to snuggle up with this winter!
Gorgeously illustrated with rhyming text. Captures all the magical moments that happen on a wondrous snowy day. You can’t help but be sucked into the joy of this kid who has woken up to the hush of falling snow. Love the shared family enjoyment. The art makes you want to jump in and join them.
This book feels like an instant classic: warm, family-centric winter joy, however the digital art brings it down a notch. PS: Stories that rhyme can either work or not, and this one works.
With a poetic, lyrical text and beautiful illustrations that perfectly capture a snowy day, this book highlights the wonders and joys of winter. This book would be fabulous in a classroom where students could add to the book by creating their own favorite things about winter.
Another great one for a snow ST. Rhyming text talk about what snow is. Like sledding, and tasting, and snowmen and warm cozy drinks. Like the pictures that re just red, blues and whites.
The rhyming text and joy filled illustrations capture the feelings this child feels when it snows. Readers get to experience all the ways to celebrate when it snows.
