Sweet as Sugar Maple #4

Don't Go Faking My Heart

Rate this book
It should be a match made in heaven, except she’s only attracted to jerks, and he’s a cinnamon roll…with burnt edges.

I, Ashley Jane Moore, am a glorious disaster.

Listen, I like myself, but the men in my life typically don’t. Not my dad and certainly not my manipulative ex. The one exception is my best friend, Rusty. He’s the ultimate farm-boy-next-door, and he has a way of making me feel less disaster, more glorious.

We’d be perfect for each other if it weren’t for two things: he friend-zoned me instantly, and I only seem to go for jerks.

But when one of those jerks—the manipulative ex—comes back into my life to steal my heart and the account I’m working on, Rusty does the noble thing and pretends to be my boyfriend.

But we may be a little too convincing. Because the more we pretend, the more real it feels.

Rusty:

I had to kiss her.

It was the only way to protect the woman I love from her narcissistic ex, and she happily went along. And the longer we keep up the charade, the happier she seems.

I knew fake dating Ash would be torture, but I didn’t expect something even more excruciating to come from it: hope. Because as Ash and I play house, I get the sense she’s starting to see me differently.

As much as I want that, I can’t let her see too deeply. If she does, I’ll lose her forever.

Don’t Go Faking My Heart is a laugh-out-loud, dual POV, closed door romcom with sizzling chemistry, delicious banter, and mutual healing. It deals with themes of abuse, alcoholism, loss, and emotional manipulation while still being uplifting and having a happily-ever-after. Books in the Sweet as Sugar Maple series can be enjoyed in any order.

I think Kate Watson is one of the very few authors that can equally make me feel all the feelings in the best of ways! I totally cried, laughed, swooned, got angry (Rusty’s ‘dad), cheered, and just rode the best rollercoaster of emotions.

I absolutely adored both Rusty and Ash. I loved that Rusty has always loved Ash and that he was thrown into fake dating and gave himself permission to not fake anything any longer. He said the swooniest lines and I adored how he constantly was bring up Ash’s confidence up and always complimented her. I also love that he appreciate every part of what made Ash uniquely her including her ADHD. He was protective, fierce, sweet, a cinnamon roll, and one of my all time favorite MCs.

Ash was equally a wonderful FMC. I love that she was quirky, unique and a boundless source of light and energy. I love that she was able to change how she saw Rusty so fast and also always saw the goodness in him, that he sometimes couldn’t see. I love that she was equally protective of Rusty and willing to fight for him.

If you want a wonderful fake dating romance with lots of kisses, hope, healing, depth, and joy, definitely read this one!

Level 2.5ish (longer somewhat descriptive making out)

Drop everything and grab Kate Watson’s latest book—trust me, you don’t want to miss this one! If you love best friends-to-more, fake dating, and all the small-town feels, you’re in for a treat. Add in neurodivergent representation (with dyslexia and ADHD), mutual healing, and toe-curling kisses, and you’ve got a truly delightful read.

Rusty’s POV will melt your heart, and watching Ash fight for their relationship is a total treat. With laugh-out-loud moments, swoon-worthy scenes, and some serious character growth, this book is a blast. I don’t know how she does it, but not only is Kate Watson a gem of a human being, she’s also a master at her craft! I am so invested in the characters of this series. Like, I genuinely feel like I am friends with all of them! That’s author magic, that is.

Ash- Quirky, effervescent, wonderful Ash. She’s genuinely clueless that Rusty harbors feelings for her. I loved watching her wake up to that and seeing her take charge of things at the end of the story.

Rusty- Oh, sweet little Rusty! I just wanted to give him a hug! What a stand up guy. I loved how he supported Ash in who she was and I loved his protective streak.

And then to see my other besties Jane, Millie, PJ, Tripp, Duke, Lottie, Sonny and Lou was amazing too. Obviously.

This book releases in 8 DAYS y’all! Thanks to Kate for the ARC.

Finished in less than a day because I couldn't stop reading it

Heyooooo to perfection in a book.

Rusty and Ash = 🤌🤌

Okay let's just talk about some of my favorite aspects:
1. Ash and her ADHD and her journey of acceptance and embracing her skills set due to her diagnosis. Like WOW this was so healing and I adored her internal thought process and the way she was a beautiful representation of someone who has an ADHD diagnosis and thrives

2. Rusty and his Dyslexia. Also his love of audiobooks 👌 like WOW. That was such a fun aspect and I loved how it just showed him being a normal person.

3. The emotional healing. Rusty and his backstory is heartbreaking and boy oh boy does it lead to some of those overprotective burnt edges of the cinnamon roll that is Rusty 😍 and I legit cried during moments for him and felt so warm and happy when he had this healing moments 😍

4. Ash and her very xtremely hateable ex boyfriend and her journey to truly move past the evil dude. Ugh. So beautiful

5. THE JANES holy cow they were HILARIOUS and I wanted to highlight whole pages of their friendly banter it had me cracking up so good!

6. The little kid side characters. The tball scene had me ROLLING

7. The epically swoony romance. Because let's be real. It was epic. It was swoony. Those kisses were emotion based and full of fire and 👌🔥👌🔥👌🔥👌🔥👌

Ugh. Each book just keeps getting better and I love how I'm pumped for the next one because we get to see more of Lou as a side character in this story and ooooooo man.

I just love them all. All the characters (besides the hateable ones) and man I cried and didn't want the story to end!

So. So. So. Good.

💋Kisses only
⚠️Ash has a narcissistic father and manipulative ex boyfriend causing issues. Rusty has an alcoholic father who is 😤😤😤 and there's talk of grief and death of a family member in the past

Genre: Clean Romance

Format: ebook

Cautions: mentions of physical abuse, alcohol addiction, grief/loss, manipulation, narcissism; a few steamy kisses, but nothing beyond that

Main themes: friends to lovers, healing from trauma, growing self-love and self-confidence

Main characters: Ash, Rusty, Jane, Millie, Lou, Parker, Patty, Sonny, Duke, Tripp

Favorite quote: "Grief is a beautiful thing, son. It's a sign that you had someone in your life who mattered that much to you. . . . If you take away the pain of grief, you take away the love from life. You can't have loss without love."

Review:

Ash's story is my favorite of all the Janes and books in this series so far.

Ash is quirky, vibrant, fun, and accepting—and she always shows up for her people. No matter the cost to herself, she gives everything she's got when she knows she can help someone or make something better.

Rusty has a heart of gold but doesn't seem to realize it. He sees and meets Ash's needs before she says a word. He builds up young men who are facing situations similar to his. He's everything we want in a protective but empowering MMC. And he's absolutely perfect for Ash.

If only she could figure that out. Their childhood trauma and the way they pursue healing could be the thing that brings them together or the thing that rips them apart.

In Don't Go Faking My Heart Kate Watson brings on all the emotions, showing what it really looks like for two adults to unmake what others have made of them—even in their own minds—and heal. It's messy. It's maddening. It's real. It's beautiful.

This story made me smile, cheer, laugh, and cry.

And the threads that explored grief in a healthy way were healing to me too. These are lines that will live forever in my head because they're just what I needed today.

Thank you, Kate, for another sweet but real and healing story. I'm so grateful for your voice in the world.

**As a note, I received an ARC from the author, but I wrote this adoring review because I wanted to, not because it was required. All opinions stated here are my own.

Kate has done it again! This story…it’s everything. The characters, the flirting, the growth, the ROMANCE!!! You definitely need a fan handy for this one! It’s definitely become my fav from this wonderful series!

Ash and Rusty work together to show the town council they can help improve Sugar Maple by showcasing the town and bringing in more business. Philip, Ash’s ex, arrives in town and wants his company to take over, but he doesn’t have the town’s best interest at heart. Plus he’s a jerk.

Rusty has loved his best friend, Ash, since he met her and everyone knows but Ash. So when Philip tries to make a move on Ash and reconnect, what is Rusty to do but fake being her boyfriend? He just hopes he doesn’t lose his heart at the end of the deal.

Rusty and Ash are it, yall! Rusty definitely has swagger and game that’s he’s been keeping from Ash, and she doesn’t know what to think of this new Rusty! But, boy does she like it!

I loved how Rusty helped Ash be her wonderful self. He loved her for who she was. He helped her grow by letting her see her greatness and all she could accomplish. He was just amazing. Hands down.

I have loved seeing Ash in this series, but I enjoyed seeing her shine in this book. She was quirky and lovable. Her relationship with her step-dad was special and their sweet conversation about choked me up.

I loved this book to pieces and so glad Rusty and Ash got their HEA! If you love friends to lovers, great flirting, sizzling kisses, spunky old ladies, and sweet friendships, then definitely check this one out!

This is book 4 of the series, and I recommend reading these in order to get the best experience! Trust me! You’ll want to read them all!

This book was cute and fun and hilarious and everything you could want in a book!!! 🤩🥰 I adored the characters most of all!! I swear Ash was me with curly hair. 👀😆

I seriously couldn't get enough of this book until about halfway through when their fake dating turned not so fake and they fell in love... Hard. Nothing inappropriate transpired but I felt it was too descriptive a lot of the time and I found myself skimming because of it. I mean, maybe I'm just not the most romantic type of girl or whatever but I got realllllllly tired of the mentions of tummy waffles.

If that doesn't bother you though, this was a really fun book. I LOVED the themes it dealt with and how well the author wrote them. 🤩 I never even dealt with the things these characters did yet I've come away with things learned and with all the warm fuzzy feelings.

So, over all, I really did love this book. But where at first I saw myself reading and rereading this book, now I highly doubt I ever will. I would love to go back and read the others in the series. 🥰 The author did an amazing job of telling you some backstory if you hadn't read the others (like me) without pressing pause on the story. Truly, it was a really great book! 🤩

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 (rounded up)

“Don’t Go Faking My Heart is the 4th book in the Sweet As Sugar Maple series, and I feel like I love each book more than the previous one! I loved Ash & Rusty’s story so much. I identified so much with Ash’s feelings, and I loved how in tune she was to her ADHD and how she functions/uses it as a superpower instead of letting it define her. I felt so seen when she was having a moment of spiraling thoughts. I have felt the same way and it felt validating to have this FMC experiencing the same emotions. I loved how Ash & Rusty are each other’s greatest cheerleaders and how their mutual support and encouragement is what makes them best friends. I also loved the chemistry and the swoon-worthy kisses. If you’re looking for a sweet rom com with no spice, this one is great! 4.5 stars, (rounded up) only because there was a moment in the book when Ash learns some delicate information from a secondary character instead of the source when it wasn’t that person’s story to tell. I thought it maybe could have been handled differently, but maybe not.
*I was given an ARC of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Don’t Go Faking My Heart features Ash and Rusty, Rusty is perfect and the way they both support each with Rusty with his dyslexia and Ash with her ADHD was amazing. The sweet and solid guy friend, secretly pining for his oblivious best girl friend is a favorite of mine, but Kate Watson’s newest release, Don’t Go Faking My Heart, took my swooning to the next level. Rusty is a cinnamon roll male main character with burnt edges, per Watson’s own description. He’s everything you want in a stand-up MMC, but he also has scars. Ash, too, has scars that dictate how she sees herself and her worthiness of love. When her manipulative ex comes to town, Rusty and Ash are thrown into a fake dating situation (swoon!) that starts peeling back the layers protecting both of their hearts.

This book is lovely <3 Everything about it is perfection, and it’s definitely re-read worthy! Dare I say it’s my favorite of the Sweet as Sugar Maple Series? I absolutely devoured it and it’s one of those books that stays with you long after you finish it. There are so many laugh out loud moments, and just as much depth. Watson is able to include heavier topics while keeping the tone of the book romantic and airy. Also, can I just say that she’s the best at setting up the next book in the series I can’t WAIT to read Lou’s story <3

I have been waiting to read about Rusty and Ash since the first book in the series! They are seriously so cute and I am a sucker for a fake dating trope!

I love how much they both grow, this series did really great at combining the fun and serious topics.

I really love how kind, caring and just farm boy Rusty is. He definitely grows a lot and overcomes mental blocks. Ash having ADHD is great for representation too, and watching her learn to love that part of herself, it is so nice as someone who relates.

I really like Kate Watson's books because she writes romcoms that include heavy topics, but she still manages to keep it light. This book has a FMC that is neuroatypical and has had abusive, manipulative relationships, and a MMC with an abusive, alcoholic father. They both have similar feelings of not being enough or worthy of love. I liked this book because it made me feel a lot of different emotions, and when a book does that for me, it makes my top books of the year list.

Do you do squats while you brush your teeth? I have to admit that as soon as I read that part I was done. I’ve been squatting or hula-ing every time I brush my teeth for years and my kids make fun of me. But now I feel seen. I get you Ash.

@katewatsonbooks is just making me fangirl over every book. This is another fun addition to the series and I was there for every insecure and smiley moment. It can be read alone, but don’t deny yourself the enjoyment.

Put BFFs in a crazy small town with pushy friends, an annoying ex, and you get a story filled with laughter and love. Ash and Rusty had their own personal trials and I loved how supportive they were of each other as they worked through things. And helllooooo Rusty. Fake? Um. Yeah. Keeping telling yourself that Ash.

So many little moments spoke to my heart or flat out made me laugh. And a big loud Princess Bride crazy lady yell at the ex. And the father. Adored these two and all their crazy friends. The ending and all the feels.

Friendship is a great place to start. But will Ash ever see what’s in front of her and take care of Rusty’s heart?

There’s so much to love about this book! Rusty and Ashley are instantly adorable and you can’t not root for them. He falls first in this small town romance and she needs to be able to view herself and relationships in a new light. Rusty is the honorable, standup and sweet guy and Ashley is a loyal, talented and fun woman. A must read

Wow! I loved this book. I am not a big romance reader, but this was such a good read with so many undercurrents.

The book is so well written and the characters are so deep. Bonus points for representation of ADHD and dyslexia and childhood trauma. The book is also well researched where the author actually details the marketing strategies that the Janes come up with.

Even though it's a love story at its core, the book brings up not just the mental health issues and toxic relationships, but how other people and most importantly the person himself/herself reacts to it, how it gives them insecurities that can last a lifetime.

I wasn't digging Rusty and Ash together, but their chemistry was evident as soon as the fake dating started, it felt like Rusty was hiding from the readers just like he was riding from Ash before that. That was such a pivotal moment for the book.

I also liked the character growth and the notes of friendship, parental love and neighbourly love this book brings out. I loved all the references the book has, from Westley, Buttercup, Harry Potter and even Gollum, but the best parts of the book are Ash's internal monologues, some of those are just exceedingly funny, and some downright painful as she leans in her insecurities.

The book is part of a series, and I haven't read the previous books, there are mentions of previous incidents but don't necessarily hamper the reading experience.

I received an advance copy of the book and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is technically the 4th book in the Sweet As Sugar Maple series but it can be read as a stand alone! I actually read book #3 first 🤪

Rusty and Ash are the best characters there ever were 🫶 The most beautiful representation of ADHD, Dyslexia, healing from trauma - it was written so well.

It is closed door, he falls first, small town, friends to lovers, all the best tropes. Get ready to laugh out loud and swoon over Rusty 💖

First let me say that each installment in Kate Watson’s Sweet as Sugar Maple series just gets better and better. I absolutely love the Janes, each and every story line and side character, the town of Sugar Maple and everythin' about this sweet Southern community. Ms. Watson is a master world builder, so much so, that I want to find this little scrap of earth, move there, and assert myself as this friend group’s newest BFF.

Gosh, it’s sooo hard to write a review without any spoilers because there is sooooo much to gush about in this 4th book! Let’s start with characterization - quirky people are colorful, y’all. And I love these two main characters! With their idiosyncrasies and quirks and neurodivergent differences, Rusty and Ash are pure gold. How does Ms. Watson make us absolutely fall in love with her characters, all while highlighting real and honest diversities in thinking, processing, and learning? Yep, that’s Kate Watson for ya, giving us so much more than we bargained for!

And wow, those backstories - Rusty and Ash broke our hearts with their histories and hurts - but that just made their redemption moments all the more sweeter. (Speaking of sweet, did I mention that I just HAD to make sweet tea like 5 times while readin' this book?)

And can I just say: Hill. billy. hockey. How on earth did I not know about this? Please tell me it really exists, and then please tell me wheeeeere can I get tickets? (And if it doesn’t exist, holy campfire, this was so hilariously creative, I would buy this book for this scene ALONE!!! I was literally laughing tears, y’all!)

Now back to serious: In this story, the thread of found-family was deliciously poignant and woven artistically and skillfully throughout, tying together the Janes, couples, friends, Rusty and Ash (#Rush), and even a few side characters besides. Just beautiful.

And (hopefully without spoiling anything) I can just give a little shout-out to the way Ash stuck to Rusty like glue and refused to give up on him (or let him give up, for that matter). This was just so “Ash and Rusty and I loved it. (She fits him so well!) This whole darn book was opposites-attract done right, from start to finish.

Notable Quotables:

- “So as she crashes and falls asleep on my shoulder, all I can do is watch her instead of the next presentation. I listen to her quiet exhale instead of to the speakers. I feel the stir of breath against my neck instead of the whir of the air conditioning when it finally kicks on. And I pine. For every second of the next hour, I pine.
- “The first time I met Ash, I felt like someone opened the curtains in a dark room. It was almost painful how much light she let in. My vision was blurred and dim up until that moment. I had only seen the world in gray scale.
- Never in my life has someone called me gorgeous. Never has someone insisted that I'm beautiful. I thought Rusty was making an offhand comment, trying to sell the lie, but “Rusty, come on, I say. “No. I'm not backing down from this, and we're not moving on until you acknowledge that I'm right. You are gorgeous, and if you don't see it, you're gonna have to trust me. Do you trust me? WHY AM I CRYING? “Yes. “Good. Then you'll have to trust me on this until I've convinced you of it so thoroughly, you wear the truth of it in your eyes. You. Are. Gorgeous.

Now. Are you still here? Have I seriously not convinced you yet? Why are you not already on your way to one-click this puppy? I pinky swear: you will love it!

To Ms. Watson now: Can I please please please have the gps coordinates for Sugar Maple, SC? Maybe I could be the older Auntie who runs a (new) gift shop in town? (I’d even be willing to sell (gasp) tie dye t-shirts and perhaps…maybe some sports memorabilia (hint, hint)?) Maybe a few of those huge foam fingers (another gasp) for the hillbilly hockey team? Anything to keep this series going, because there is just so much to love.

And a huge thank you, too, Ms. Watson, for all the nostalgia. I seriously loved every Southern minute of this book (yes, I admit it: I grew up drinkin Cheerwine, catchin lightning bugs, and eatin muscadines). But I think just about anyone would agree with me: there’s just something so charming about this little town you've created.

So, as much as I could go on-and-on with my gushin, let me cut right to the chase: I would give this book 10 stars if I could. I highly recommend (not only) Don’t Go Faking my Heart, but this entire series, to anyone out there who likes stories with deep romantic connections, found-family friend groups, and charming small towns that feel like home.

I loved this so much!!! All of these from the Sugar Maple series have been soo soo good!!
Depth to the characters and great story lines and character arcs!

(I was given an arc in return for my honest review)

I do love a good he falls first story. Rusty has loved Ash from the minute he met her in Strawberry Fields for Never! But how’s he supposed to act on those feelings when he friend zoned her in the beginning because she didn’t return his feelings nor did he think he was her type. And in the beginning he wasn’t. But her type wasnt worthy of her beauty and quirkiness and uniqueness. She just didn’t know her real type was a handsome cinnamon roll Farm Boy (IYKYK and personally I absolutely LOVED all those references!!) who had a few burnt edges that only made him better! I love it when the girl finds out something that shaped the guy and she becomes protective because she knows what it’s like and they find healing together. It was soo good. He just needed to believe in himself the way he always believed in Ash. And when she finally saw him and fell for him it was epic! They are definitely perfect for each other!

Sweet quirky Ash! I also love when the guy shows the girl her worth when other men in her life didn’t accept her for what she was. She finally accepted herself and got away from stupid face jerk of a boy (doesn’t deserve to be called a man) and her friends were so supportive and she embraced herself for who she was. She realized eventually after committing to a big job how much she took Rusty’s steadiness and always being there for her for granted. And when he started the fake boyfriend boy did she start really seeing the real Rusty. I loved how they helped each other and stood up for each other in the faces of the people who didn’t deserve to breath the same air as them. The teasing and the banter and the nicknames oh it was glorious!!

I loved the support of the Jane’s and Tripp, Duke and Sonny and the found family dynamic through all the books. Even them giving Rusty advice and Rusty giving them advice on their dynamics with Ash just was beautiful! And how everyone pretty much rooted for Rusty and showed him that there were more people who saw him as a good and better person than those who only saw the shadow of the drunks son. Sometimes we have to see others belief in ourselves before we see it. That was such a good moment and might’ve made me tear up a little bit! Overall I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait for the next one!!

Absolute PERFECTION!!!! I could not love this book more!!

Rusty friend zoned Ash the first time they met to protect his heart but has regretted it every day since as he has fallen more in love with her every day. Believing he will become like his abusive father means he has no future to offer her, but when her jerk of an ex shows up in town, he does not hesitate to pretend to be Ash's boyfriend in order to protect her.

Being this close to her and having her believe it is all pretend is torture of the most acute kind, but Rusty will do anything to protect the woman he loves. Even if it means breaking his heart.

Ash knows her ADHD makes her a walking disaster and that inevitably, the men her life all leave her. Except for her best friend Rusty who steps up and stays when she needs him the most. But Ash soon realizes that the problem with faking feelings is that they soon turn real.

What you'll love:
friends to lovers
dual pov
fake dating
neurodivergent main characters
small town vibes
he falls first
Double H hockey
ice bath
emotional healing
her wearing his clothes
the Janes plus significant others
so much chemistry and flirting!
"it was never pretend for me"
the Hens
wounded, protective hero
ALL THE KISSES!
"as you wish"

I know that is a long list of things to love about this book but trust me, I could easily triple its length because this book was downright swoony. Friends to lovers is not always an easy trope to pull off but Kate did it to perfection and this is one of my new favorite books with the trope! Both Rusty and Ash had valid reasons to hesitate and there is SO MUCH tension and chemistry between them.

I loved having Rusty's pov. That man is smitten with a capital S, and seeing his thoughts every time they touched or she simply walked into the room was so incredibly romantic! The way he protects and champions her yet gives her the space when she needs to figure things out on her own made me swoon. Leading men everywhere need to be taking notes!

And no review would be complete without mentioning the Janes and all of their significant others. Love their unconditional support of each other and the men bring a whole new level of fun to the group. The Double H hockey games will be living rent free in my head for a long time!!

This is the fourth book in the series and while it can be read as a standalone, why on earth would you want to miss the first three books? They are just as amazing and the entire series has earned a spot on my favorites shelf! Go read them and find out why readers talk about Kate Watson's books in superlatives!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

What a ride!! This 4th book in the Sweet at Sugar Maple series does not shy away from difficult topics but it also embraces love and belonging in such beautiful ways. Also gotta shout out the hilarious and ridiculous sport that is hillbilly hockey and the darling small town of Sugar Maple. I want to go there!

I am here for anything Kate writes! I love her style and her absolutely fantastic character banter. But what sets Kate apart is her ability to meld hard topics and beautiful romance. That skill is on full display in this novel.

Ash is such a delight! I loved getting inside her head and really getting to know her. She has dealt with a lot in the past and is still working through her own self worth after a series of toxic relationships with her ex boyfriend and her father. But wow, I just love her! She is passionate, so creative, driven, and loyal. I love her relationship with the other Janes and I am here for her romance with Rusty.

Rusty truly is a cinnamon roll with burnt edges. He is a genuinely good guy. He helps everyone he can. He is trusted by so many people in his community. He wants to do good and change the world for the better. He is also overcoming some serious toxicity from his past (his dad is the literal worst!!) He is haunted by what could be and his fears about being like his truly horrible father. But I love his friendship with Ash most of all. And I love that he is head over heels for Ash from the moment they meet.

I am not usually a friends to lovers fan. I just feel like there is SO much miscommunication in this trope and if people just communicated, it would work. This book has changed my mind on this trope! Ash and Rusty are friends first and then discover their obvious chemistry and attraction for each other. There is just the right amount of tension and confusion in their budding relationship. But I did not feel bothered by their miscommunication because it wasn't very much. They are open and honest about their feelings as well as they can be. And I am here for their swoony kisses, beautiful declarations of love, and happily ever after.

I absolutely love this series! Getting to see the other Janes in each book is so fun. I love seeing everyone falling in love and supporting each other no matter what. Can't wait to finish the series with Lou's story!

Ashley "Ash" Moore thinks she is a jerk magnet from her stuffy father to her ex-boyfriend. She has decided she is doomed to never be loved. She does not see that her neurodivergence is what makes her so charming and likable. Sure she operates a little differently than others, but this just makes her even more lovable, especially to Rusty.

Rusty is her best friend and sounding board when she needs someone to listen to her. She is totally oblivious to his knee-bending attraction to her. She thinks she is a mess, and Rusty only sees a beautiful woman that he loves. Rusty knows what it means to have to work hard and put the past behind him.

They have been tasked with rebranding Sugar Maple so that others will want to visit. When Ash's arrogant ex-boyfriend comes to town to save the day by buying everyone's property, Ash is determined to show the town that they can reawaken this charming little town with a little help on social media without selling their souls to her narcissistic ex-boyfriend. I really did not like this guy.

I laughed so much reading this book from scenes with the Canasta Club and the flirty old ladies and their handsy ways to a conversation between 4 and 5 year old ball players discussing love. I was cackling like a hyena. Then we have a Caddyshack moment when Chick is determined to rid his yard of his gopher issues, and finally a game known as Double H Hockey was just the icing on the cake. For all of the funny scenes, there were equally serious scenes that were heartbreaking as Ash and Rusty discuss their childhood memories. There were definitely tears falling. So I laughed a lot, cried a little and cheered them on. I fell a little in love with both main characters.

This incredible book was just an all around good read with tummy waffles, dynamite kisses and heartwarming scenes. I was actually a little sad when it was over. If you enjoy a good belly laugh and a few tears, you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is an amazing romance. So silly, so fun, so banter-y (that’s not even a word) and the perfect modern romantic comedy story. I am so regretting not discovering the Sugar Maple series beforehand because I am obsessed with these characters.

The fourth installation in the series, Don’t Go Faking My Heart follows Rusty and Ash(ley Jane) in a marvelous tale of friends to lovers and fake dating.

For previous readers of the Sugar Maple series, you get so many breadcrumbs (honestly would be considered a sandwich at this point) of the three previous couples. For new readers, you are able to fall in love with literally every single character (not Phillip, Arlo, or Teddy).

I cannot gush enough about this book honestly.

Ash, the ADHD heroine of the story, recovering from only dating jerks and being able to see what it is really like to be with someone who doesn’t want her to change who she is. All the while having the perfect fake dating relationship with one of her best friends which makes her feel strange. Like she doesn’t want it to be fake. Like how she doesn’t even care about her toxic and manipulative ex when she’s with Rusty, how natural them being together is revealed to be.

Rusty, the dyslexic MMC, with some bad family life is determined to prove to be not like his abusive, drunk of a father which proves hard in a small town where everyone knows everybody. He can’t see that he isn’t even close to Arlo as he helps literally everyone he can including jumping to the rescue to support Ash as she faces her ex, Phillip, who diminished her spark.

Seriously, give this book a read if you love The Princess Bride References, unique main characters, a loving supporting cast of characters, and Tummy Waffles (aka abs). (also this is a closed door romance)

* Thank you so much to Kate Watson for allowing me to have an ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) of this book, however, my review and honest opinions are all my own.

I am overjoyed to be taking part in the ARC reading for this book, Don't Go Faking My Heart by Kate Watson! Thank you for the opportunity😊

During my reading of this book, I realised very quickly that I need to read the other books in the series ASAP!

Oh, how I love dual P.O.Vs where the man is just absolutely smitten from the start! Makes my heart so happy!

This book makes me feel proud to be a Lucy-JANE ! Oh my god, when the "YouTube sensation Lucy Jane" was mentioned, I actually screamed after doing a double take😂 I feel famous myself, and i think i need one of those Lucy Jane era tops! I can't wait for her book!

I love the Chicks and the Hens!!! The dad stuff hit home a little bit, but Greg is the best❤️

I kept having to hold my breath at the tension between Ash and Rusty omg, I am so in love with them both!!!<3

I only have positive things to say, all I wanted to do was read, but life kept making me pause (before immediately jumping back into the book!) I can't wait to get my own copy of this beautiful book, and i cant wait for everyone to be able to read it!

There is such depth to this book, childhood trauma, abuse (mental and physical), neurodivergence, and everything is dealt with so wonderfully. I am really very happy.

Some quotes:
📕Lou growls like a guy in a romance novel. Except, you know, without the flirty connotations.

📕“Someday, the man I love is going to put a Ring Pop on this finger.

📕I stride to Ash, tap Philip's shoulder, and say, “I’m gonna need you to get your hands off my girlfriend.

📕“Dude. If I sweat and cry through my makeup, you owe me another Diet Coke.

📕Sweet girl, you may not be the daughter of my flesh, but you are the daughter of my heart and soul.

This book is out on 29th August 2024, so preorder now!!! You won't regret it!❤️

I received a free arc copy of Dont Go Faking My Heart in return for an honest review!

Don't Go Faking My Heart is the fourth book in the Sweet as Sugar Maple series. While you might have a better understanding of the friendship dynamics and other characters mentioned throughout the story if you've read the previous books, I do believe this could be enjoyed just fine as a standalone as well.

I have been in love with this wonderful series since book one and with each book, I just find myself falling in love with it even more! One of the things I love about the series as a whole is how effortlessly Kate Watson blends these laugh out loud moments that will keep you smiling with much more difficult and real issues that add so much depth to the story. Ash and Rusty's story was no exception. I love a good 'he falls first' book, and Rusty certainly did just that... but the two were strictly in the friend zone until he faked being her boyfriend when her manipulative ex shows up. Under the impression of 'faking', he is able to let his true feelings come through... and I was here for it! The flirty banter and chemistry between these two was absolute perfection and I could not get enough. And the way they stand up for each other!? Yes, please! Both had some tough events in their life--- her with her biological dad and her ex and him with his alcoholic, abusive father... and the more we get to see of their pasts, the more I rooted for them to get their happily ever after. Their story was tender and emotional... but also full of fun moments to keep it from going too heavy. I loved every moment of it!

Don't Go Faking My Heart is a closed-door romance with sizzling kisses only and no language. It does take on difficult topics like abuse, alcoholism, grief, etc.

**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

Don’t Go Faking My Heart is a fabulous story about best friends to lovers Ash and Rusty. They have been friends for a long time and always have each other's backs. When a big developer threatens to take over the Main Street of Sugar Maple Creek, Ash declares she can do better, get them more business and of course Rusty will drop all his own work to help her do it. When the developer turns out to be Ash’s manipulative ex boyfriend who is wanting to win her back, Rusty steps in as the perfect fake boyfriend, except there’s no faking for Rusty.

Rusty has been in love with Ash for years but was ‘friend-zoned early on and has kept his feelings hidden ever since. So every touch, gesture, kiss is all genuine for Rusty and he’s totally adorable. Everyone else can see how he feels about Ash except for Ash herself. As the charade continues, Ash starts to see Rusty in a new light and it starts to dawn on her that maybe they could be more than fake. But she’s so sure that Rusty is faking, she doesn’t want to overstep the boundaries of their friendship.

Fake dating has to be one of my favourite tropes, especially when it’s a dual POV book as you get to see both sides of the relationship and get to face palm at both characters. I loved how supportive Rusty was yet so terrified he was going to become like his abusive father. Ash is drawn to bad boys and hasn’t experienced the love of a good guy so she can’t believe the fake feelings are in fact real.

The rest of the townsfolk were fantastic as well, this is actually book 4 in a series about the town but it was my first introduction to them all. I loved the quirky and flavourful characters that rounded out this story, that helped the main characters see and feel their true worth.

I will be looking at reading more from the Sugar Maple series both previous and future releases.
