For me this series has gone from strength to strength, every time I feel like Andy can’t possibly create more enchanting stories then along she comes and fills me with absolute wonder. I have a real fondness for Aura whose enthusiasm for dragons and life sparks something new in Tomas encouraging him to find out the key to saving his favourite flying friends. It’s filled with lots of ooh and ahh moments, that will keep children turning the pages. At the heart of these books is a wonderful message about being brave enough to be yourself and to embrace what is unique about you. Once again the characterisation is superb, I particularly love how family orientated these stories are, so many children’s books exclude the grown-ups but here they have a special role to play. Andy deftly mixes humour and heart and sprinkles her stories with magic and excitement which is captured superbly by Sara’s sublime illustrations. All of the elements of each book are drawn together creating a truly unexpected and charming finale which will absolutely delight fans of this series.

It was with surprise and delight that The Boy Who Sang With Dragons came flying through my letterbox. It's the latest in the series that is delighting many children from the age of 7 years old in their homes and schools. The books are part of a series, but can also be read as stand-alone pretty well.

The cover is so much fun and is textured, which adds a certain je'ne'sais'quoi. It's always special for children to find books designed like this. Look out for the evidence that dragon's may have been at the books. It's illustrated in such a fun way inside.

Imagine dragon's at the bottom of your grandad's garden, well, this is where they live!

Ted and Liam are back and a lot of slime is involved, in the most unexpected gross ways that has a lot of kid appeal and then proceeds in a step-by-step guide of how to grow a dragon.

There's also Aura and Lolli who are into capes and tutus and chocolate. Children will read where chocolate comes from. They are fun as well amongst riotous animals causing havoc.

Readers are reacquainted with the dragons, such as Zing and Flicker to go on a terrific adventure with and also be acquainted with nature and what dragon's can do for it. There's a concern that one of the characters may stop seeing the dragons. There are real emotions that are easy for readers to grasp of and empathise with and see why a character is so sad and dreams and nightmares, which are relatable for children.
There are music references and the positivity that singing can bring and some more humour and nature as the author carefully brings the book back to a lighter mood.

Amongst the fun, there are serious themes within families and older relatives, but all done in context of the story and within a middle grade reader's grasp of understanding as it's nothing too heavy. Tha balance is good and is more on the side of humour, adventure, imagination and fun, which makes it a great addition to the series as well as perfect for reading for pleasure and has enough if school's wish to open up a conversation too.

There is no shortage of dragons now from Grandpa’s garden Dragon fruit tree, and Tomas new little dragon Zing is always entertaining. It’s his first dragon Flicker that Tomas misses. Dragon’s don’t stay small forever, and Flicker and his dragon friends are all too big to hide anywhere near.

Tomas told Flicker he has to go and hide somewhere but he thought Flicker would have visited by now even if it had to be in the middle of the night.

To his delight and surprise, Flicker arrives and they swoop through the night together. Saying goodbye again is hard though and Flicker seems to be a little sad too.

Tomas still has the problem of trying to grow Dragon fruit seedlings to strong and healthy plants. Something keeps going wrong, and every time he loses one, he feels guilty he isn’t protecting future dragons like he should.

Further study into the diaries and notes he found reveals something amazing. Somebody he knows is related to the writer of the diary and notes. This is wonderful until he feels as if they might want to take ownership and responsibility of the dragons themselves.

More worry for Tomas comes in the shape of a very quiet little sister. Lolli is usually full of beans and jabber jabbering, but seems more content huddled in duvets on her bedroom floor with her stick friends. Tomas knows she too is missing her own dragon Tinkle, but he has a feeling there is more to Lolli’s sadness than a sore arm.

Filled with all these worries, Tomas struggles to sleep well, his dreams full of strange images, and mixed up messages. How can they save more Dragon fruit plants? What’s up with Lolli? Is he going to lose his connection with the dragons?

Everything soon rises to a head with electrifying consequences!

The 5th and (looks to be) final book in this wonderful series. Why so wonderful? It begins with the magic and awesomeness of discovering and looking after a tiny dragon. Keeping a secret so amazing is impossible, so others are soon included. That means more dragons which equals more trouble, exploding poos, green farts that make everyone laugh, dragons with cascading colours and more.

Along with the dragons comes a mystery about where they came from, keeping them safe from scientists, and all the challenges that come along with friendships, family, a school nemesis and other things about growing up. It’s difficult enough without the added disasters these dragons bring with them.

Illustrations by Sara Ogilvie are scattered through the book, her style matching the fun and intrigue of the story perfectly.

This series is told in the point of view of Tomas, and he talks directly to you as he navigates this new exciting, if not slightly stressful new life full of dragons. I’ve loved every episode and highly recommend it to anyone aged 7+ or those who might like a dragon of their own in their life.

I adore these books so much, they’re filled with joy and laughter. This book was no exception and I loved the addition of mini bee dragons! I think the way that Andy Shepherd weaves in childhood emotions and insecurities into the character’s journeys is so powerful and honest that they will help many children in the future too. These books are a big hit with my class and I can’t wait to share this next book with them too.

I guessed Aura's 'secret' quite early in the previous book - but then I'm not exactly the target demographic for these books. As a lover of dragons, I really enjoyed these books. I also have a very personal reason for this one resonating with me. I have no Icelandic relatives, but my children called my mother Amma. Seeing that appellation here brought back happy memories.

Prekrasan završetak serijala! Bilo je ovo divno putovanje s Tomasom i njegovim prijateljima, uz dodir magije koji nam je svima potreban.

That was a wonderfully heart-warming if rather dramatic way to finish the series! I adored it and was on tenterhooks all the way through. The loose edges were all sewn up neatly, friendships forged, tested but also pushed to limits in attempts to get people to believe. Grandpa is the most amazing character throughout as he really ties everything together nicely. A great series with preteen angst, dragons, secrets, mysteries and love (not to mention the food combinations that will make you hungry)! I am amazed that the author managed such a well put together chaotic mix of hilarity and stressful times for the end yet made you feel satisfied. A very very good series for all ages (as long as you like magic)!

Of all the thousands of children’s books we’ve read over the years. This series is hands down my favourite. An absolute classic, we absolutely adored all 5 of them.

Review from a 7 year old: I love that even though Flicker is fully grown he still comes to see Tomas and have a really good friendship. I like how he is taking care of a new baby feisty dragon.

What a glorious ending to this series. Filled with surprises, magic and that gorgeous bit of love we’ve come to admire about these stories. The relationship between the kids and their dragons is lush. This is full of joy and wonder.
