Kett must explore the darkest parts of the country, the human soul, and himself to get to the heart of this unholy mystery.
I'm in the minority here, but I really didn’t enjoy this book at all. Was it really written by Alex? All his others have been very good.
It was just so implausible, so much happening all at once. It was like Scooby Doo without the fun bits. Clare, who is one of my favourites, was very over-done in this book with his rantings and 'tossings'.
I ended up skim-reading huge chunks of it. I'm sorry but I thought this was terrible! I hope it's not the end of the DCI Kett series for me.
Funny, serious, thrilling...all this and more in the Kett series. Great reads, interesting characters, really good plots. Just all-around good stories.
I just love this series and I especially enjoyed the occult side of this. It worked so well and made for a really interesting case. Little bit predictable who was the bad guy, but still enjoyable!
This was very different to the rest of the DCI Kett series, but it was still excellent. There were some familiar aspects to the story - one of the team was in a life threatening situation and needing rescued, and Clare's insults were as creative as ever. The callback to the big bad from previous books was great, and I can't wait to read the next book! (I still have a bad feeling about Billie but I can't quite put my finger on why)
I started reading this book as soon as it arrived on my Kindle. That was around midnight, and to start with, I thought, "Mmm, maybe I should read this in the day time'. But, as with every book in this absolutely brilliant series, I couldn't put my Kindle down. And, oh my goodness, what a read. It's quite scary in places, and I don't read horror stories as a rule, but Alex's writing is just sublime and I was able to enjoy the plot without hiding behind my pillow too much. This is a very difficult thing to do when reading and not watching! I could not work out how on earth it was all going to come together, but it did. The book ended in quite a shocker, and you really need to have read previous books in this series for it to make sense. The camaraderie between the team had me in fits of laughter one minute, then actually fraught with worry for certain members of the team the next.
I implore anyone new to this series to start with 'The Paper Girls'. You are then lucky enough to have a further 15 books to thoroughly enjoy. As there is now a long wait for book 17, I will take my own advice and start with book 1 and enjoy getting to know Robbie Kett and the rest of the gang from the very beginning - what joy. Bravo Alex, you've done it again!
As always I look forward to new offerings from the pen of Alex Smith, It has been so since reading his YA Furnace Series over a decade ago. I picked up this title on release day but did not get to it for a few months because work and family life were so busy. When I did start it I read in over 2 days and 3 sittings. It is another great volume in an excellent series. I could hardly put it down. I got up very early to start it on it the second day, and stayed up way too late that next night reading.
The description of this volume is:
“Hell is empty, and all the devils are here...
While filming a school project inside a ruined church, three teenagers make a horrific discovery: a severed head, left as part of a demonic ritual.
Before they can call the police, they are brutally attacked—and one of the teenagers is taken.

But how can he catch a killer who might be the Devil himself?
The sixteenth instalment in the million-selling DCI Kett series is the most ferocious, frightening and darkly funny yet. Relentless action, compulsive mystery and dark humour abound in the series that Thrilling Fiction calls "Heart-stoppingly gripping!" from the author that James Patterson describes as "fresh and ferocious!"
Kett and the team are being followed by a film crew, actually they are filming Aaron Dukes return to work as Britain’s bravest copper. But I am getting ahead of myself. The story starts with three college students heading to an abandoned church in the woods to film a youtube video. When they discover a severed human head, and are attacked by the time the police arrive one is missing, one is in the ambulance and one is rambling on and on about what happened.
Soon Kett and the team realize there are some serious occult elements to the case. And a garden of limbs sets them all on edge. There are many misdirection’s. Explosions, and even at attack on the police station. Can Kett and the team piece together what is really happening? To find out you will need to read this dark and disturbing novel.
It is a pretty dark piece of British Crime fiction. If you have read the other DCI Kett books this one is a must read. If you happen to be a fan of rough and tough action you will almost certainly enjoy this novel. And the other books in the series. This is the sixteenth of the DCI Kett stories that I have read, the seventeenth novel where Kett makes an appearance. Kett made a brief appearance in The Harder They Fall, the first of the Softley Series of books.
About the author we are informed that:
“Alex Smith wrote his first book when he was six. It wasn’t particularly good, but it did have some supernatural monsters in it. His latest books, the DCI Robert Kett thrillers, have monsters in it too, although these monsters are very human, and all the more terrifying for it. In between these two books he has published thirteen other novels for children and teenagers under his full name, Alexander Gordon Smith—including the number one bestselling series Escape From Furnace, which is loved by millions of readers worldwide and which is soon to become a motion picture. He lives in Norwich with his wife and three young daughters.
For some the Kett stories will be the things of nightmares, for others a look at the underside of society. But no matter how you read them they are crime thrillers with a lot of action, great characters and often a significant violence! This one has several surprises for Kett, the team and for us the readers! It is well worth the read.
There’s One Big Problem With This Book, & that is that it’s just TOO good!
I don’t know how the authors going to follow this up with the next book & surpass what his ever growing list of fanatical fans are going to be clamoring for!
It’s not often I stay up until 3am reading, then start reading again the instant I wake up until I’ve finished a book, but this did it for me, the only quicker way would of been an audiobook version playing while I slept, but considering the subject matter of this book, ‘reading it via osmosis while I was asleep could of had dire consequences!
If your already a fan of these books, your going to be thrilled to see this has just shy of 500pages & all your favorite family members are present & ready for duty, well mostly, except for Duke, Pete, Robbie & pretty much everyone else, even the big (pantless) kahuna himself Clare seems to be having issues, but Savage is always going to save the day, after all, that’s what we women are best at!
Book 16 in the series and I asked myself the same old question I ask each time I start a new Kett book, "Will this book be as good as the rest in the series, or will it fall short?" As the title indicates, this one definitely falls into the supernatural and police procedure genre. At the very beginning I was a little uncertain if this was going to be as good as the others in the series, but this was very short lived. As normal for the series, it is full of action, twists and turns and humour. You just have to love Clare and his ‘tossing sayings. I really didn’t want to put the book down and I was reading faster and faster to see what was going to happen next and if everyone was going to survive. Then in the finally pages book 17 was set up and the dreaded ‘Hollenbeck were mentioned and you just know that Kett and the gang are going to be dragged back through hell and beyond in book 17. Kett and Billie in particular! I just love this series and again it’s a simple 5 out of 5, with my normal message to anyone who hasn’t read the series - start at book 1 and enjoy!
I love this series, but this particular entry just didn't measure up. It was so overdone ("supernatural" elements, extreme weather, Supt. Clare going pants less not just at the office but at a colleague's home in the presence of young children etc) that it wasn't even fun to read. All the actual police work is done by one person who stays in the office all the time. I don't expect too much realism, although the series is considered police procedural, but it was beyond belief that a specialist or profiler wasn't called in. I'm also not a fan of recurring master villains, it's lazy writing and since I read a lot, I don't remember who or what they are. I have to think that a less well-established author would never have been allowed to proceed without some really heavy editing. Despite that, I will cross my fingers and hope that the next book (which I've already preordered) will be more enjoyable for me to read.

Absolutely loved this. Eerily spooky from the start. Kett and his team must solve the clues as this case is filled with suspense and horror. It is also filled with the usual banter and hilarity usually provided by the outrageous Det Sup Colin Clare with Peter Porter and Aaron Duke in support lol. They provide a welcome relief from the horror that awaits. Cant wait for the next book.
Another brilliant crime thriller from Alex Smith. Kett and the team are called when a girl is attacked, another one is missing and a decapitated head is found near some church ruins. The girl is in shock when they speak to her but she’s convinced it was a witch who attacked her. When Savage starts looking into the symbols found on the head, it looks like someone is dabbling in devil worship. The case gets more and more sinister and soon lives are in danger. There’s also some great humour in the book and Clare’s insults are getting more and more bizarre. I highly recommend this book and the series.
The author does spin a good yarn although I do think he should consider changing his publicity picture. Many of the situations in this book are rather far fetched but entertaining such as could you imagine a group of film students being allowed to be in the centre of a major crime investigation, but I guess he had to do something to bring them into the plot. I was hoping that something would happen to Duke, the idiot policeman but he’s still hanging around. All in all I think the author is good but I happen to have a problem liking some of the recurring characters although I am very pleased that his bratty children finally took a back seat in this novel.
Phew! Think I need a drink after finishing this. The usual pacy story you’d expect from this series, but this has an element of real horror and a sense of evil that develops as the case progresses. I think because the timeframe is short, it really seems to move quickly and takes you with it, breathlessly hanging on. Despite the shocking events, there is an element of humour running through the narrative that saves you from the nightmares. Seagulls and tv crews who knew! Looking forward to the next one already!
Adore the Robert Kett series and all his characters, but wish you would stop Clare abuse of his staff, can see why he does it to attempt to reduce the violence upon them, but it's making him look like a comic, almost dementia character, please don't do this unless it's the way you see him going, which would be an absolute shame for the character I respected earlier in the series, and you make duke look an absolute fool along with Pete, sorry 😞
This story is my favorite of the whole series. It left me breathless. The plot is awesome and keep me guessing. I was a little scared through a good portion of the book. It was a total thrill ride. The chemistry between the characters is great. They work well together. Sometimes, they make me laugh. No spoilers, but there's a scene where I laughed so hard, tears were running down my face. I highly recommend this whole series.
I enjoy Alex Smith's DCI Kett series very much. I like his characters, his style of writing, the clarity of his storytelling.
But I feel disappointed by Every Last Devil. It mixes the Crime and Horror genres into what becomes a messy story. It's all rather breathless as people rush here and there, and have all sots of theories. It's overlong, too.
Sorry, Alex. If it wasn't for your great characters I'd have rated this lower.
What is there to say but sheer genius! Totally different from previous books but with the fabulous DCI Robbie Kett and his wonderful team. Such a deep moving novel with demons and rituals a plenty. Hilariously funny with some extremely laugh out moments which were such a relief from the tension. I find Alex's books so entertaining and every one a worthy 5 stars. Can't wait for book 17. Thank you Alex, Barbara x
What a brilliant read, yet again! The insults, the banter, the utterly brilliant story line. And really looking forward to redline being released after the ending of every last devil. Must remember my next game of rock paper scissors.....that Moira has the winning hand gesture 😂 let's hope Clare keeps his pants on more in the future 😂 utterly brilliant from start to finish.
Amazing as always. I've been in a rut due to bereavement, mental health and physical health issues so found it hard to read and concentrate- only these books can bring me back. Thank you as always for writing the best characters and story lines, as long as you will write these I will always read them :D I have managed to get multiple people at work to read the series. I believe I've converted 4 people so far 😆 and counting 😆
Wasn’t my favourite of his novels which is a shame. Towards the end it didn’t really make sense and I got quite lost a few times with all the connections that sprouted from no where and just confused me. (Maybe that’s just me?)
It seemed repetitive as well. Clare’s ‘vocabulary doesn’t need to go on as much as it does and there was near enough a whole chapter about Porters tea that was not needed.
Hopefully the next one will be better as they usually are.
A complete different Kett book but I must admit I liked it - it was creepy as hell, and I used google a lot to find out about what3words, leylines, grimoires etc. were about.
My adrenaline level was out of this world because I love every single one of the characters and I'm freaking out if they are in danger. Someday I swear I'll get a heart attack.
Because of DCI Kett and his team I started to drink more tea and I think even I do my tea better than Porter.
I have read all of the DCI Kett books, and I have to say this is one of the best in the series. It had everything you'd want. Great storyline, comedy - I laughed out loud in parts, was genuinely creeped out, couldn't put it down, the characters were built up even more, plus there were fantastic links to another favourite author and to previous books in the series. Fantastic!! It had made me want to read other novels Alex has written. Great book :)
How on earth the author has managed to sell a whole series about such unrealistic characters, I have no idea. I would recommend that you don't waste your money or your time on this dross. I didn't find the language used by the police offensive but just totally unbelievable. The clue to his "success" is in the fact that all his books except one are on kindle unlimited.
OMG, this was so thrilling and page turning. Every book seems to be as good as the last. It takes you from laughter to fear. This book gave me shivers, so many different feelings, your crawling through the same emotions as the team. I feel every bit of Robbies pain. God bless Alex for being such a good writer and thank goodness I found these books. Can't wait for the next one.
I'm not a fan of horror. And there was bound to be explanation for those aspects. However, for me the story really dragged in the middle because of the occult stuff. The story really picked up and became the interesting and well written Kett novel that is so satisfying.
