Oh my goodness, what an emotional book. Some parts of When the Mountains Wept were so gutwrenching, the raw history captured with such detail, that I had to put the story down for a bit and come back to it. Not just the gruesome realities of war seen in James work as a battle surgeon (and the emotional implications of families changed in the blink of a gunshot) but how anyone can treat fellow Image-bearers with that much contempt and evil turns my stomach whether it’s an account from the past or current events. The Civil War is never an easy era to read about, but it’s one of my favorites because of how it impacts my heart. And it’s one I passionately believe we should be talking about more so we don’t repeat the horrible elements of that part of history. Sometimes the power of story reaches us when a lecture or a sermon can’t, and Kendy Pearson’s meticulous research gives When the Mountains Wept that authenticity and emotional reach without feeling like a textbook.

Yes, I joined the titular mountains in weeping more than once while reading this novel, but I also chuckled & grinned a lot and swooned a few times, too! James & Augusta’s romance is a slow build (only because other, more somber, things are the focus) but it’s such a sweet falling-in-love and made my heart smile. Amid the war breaking out around them, Pearson sketches a tender portrait of a close-knit family made up of vibrant personalities and lots of love. The Dabney family those made so by blood and the friends who’ve become part of the family, too came alive on these pages, and the scenes around their table or doing chores or sitting with their sick father imprinted themselves on my heart quite easily. Adorable little Bertie especially delighted me, and the affection I instantly felt for precious Izzy only deepened the more we got to know this godly man of quiet courage. All of them Pap, Gus (Augusta), Izzy, Fin, Zander, Will (Wilhemina), Melinda Jane, James and Tiny became my family over the course of our time together, and I enjoyed that we get most of their individual perspectives at some point in the novel. I grieved with them, rejoiced with them, laughed with them, cried with them and I’m solidly invested in where their story goes from here.

Bottom Line: When the Mountains Wept by Kendy Pearson is the kind of book that will make you fall in love with its characters and point you to the way of Jesus with gentle but clear- sincerity. It also takes you through the emotional wringer, causing you to mourn not only deep losses but the heartwrenching destruction of wickedness and hatred, too. Even as I grieved over the history (may I never not be anguished by it), I also found that the setting Pearson chose added intriguing and thought-provoking layers to that history. With folks in the area divided between Union and Confederate sympathizers, it really brought home the fact that this was a war fought against neighbors, friends, and even family, not an unknown enemy. When the Mountains Wept is a powerful, touching, and grace-filled story perfect for fans of Jocelyn Green’s Widow of Gettysburg or Lynn Austin’s Refiner’s Fire series.

“Bondage comes in many forms, Doctor. Anger, bitterness, unforgiveness—they’s all shackles—and Massa Jesus, He has the keys. It’s Him who sets a man truly free.

What is freedom? Kendy Pearson’s Civil War novel, When the Mountains Wept, shows a Virginia family, a wealthy doctor, and the country, all striving for freedom. The South battles the North; the Dabneys try to stir clear of the conflict, declaring, “This isn’t our war, until finally, they are thrust in the middle of it. Augusta is trying to keep her family’s farm free from the bank, and Dr. James Hill is trying to escape the memories of his past.

I loved the relationships we see in this novel. Gus cares so much for her family and for her dying father. The love between family members is vibrant and alive. I love the faith and calmness that old Izzy brings to the family, as well. He is my choice for a fave secondary character with his intentional words, patience, and compassion for all.

Pearson exhibits a great deal of Civil War knowledge and teaches it through the Union army movements as relates to Dr. Hill’s commission. She also shows the sad division of our nation, even as friends and families splintered. This book is not for the squeamish!

I am glad to see there will be more books, as some family members need more of their story told.

I received a copy of the book from JustRead. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“We don’t choose our family, James. God does.

“Wasn’t her own happiness a small price to pay for her family’s future?

“We need Yo help, Lord—to forgive. We know if’n we don’t forgive them that sins against us, there’s no forgiveness for us. Help us to forgive, lest that unforgiveness grab hold of our lives and pull us down so low we can’t never get up.

“He, too, believed Virginia was sovereign. But along with that, independence rode an ugly black horse called slavery.

When the Mountains Wept is a historical fiction novel that captures the struggles and tough choices faced by brave individuals during the American Civil War.

The story centers on Augusta Dabney, who takes care of her younger siblings and her ailing father. She is a determined young woman willing to do whatever it takes to protect her family. We also meet Dr. James Hill, who seeks a better life away from his family's troubled past.

The story takes a while to build but grows more intense with each chapter. It reveals the terrible realities of war, highlighting the suffering of slaves and those who helped them fight for freedom.Although this part of American history is difficult to read about, the author accurately depicts the events of the Civil War.

The slow-developing romance between James and Augusta felt very real, filled with challenges and misunderstandings, but it ultimately pays off. Throughout the story, the characters learn about forgiveness, acceptance, and following their faith while letting go of the past. When the Mountains Wept is a touching yet tough tale about people enduring the hardships of war and emerging stronger. It's definitely worth reading, especially for fans of history and romance.

My Thoughts

When the mountains wept is written by Kendy Pearson. This is my first exposure to this author and it will not be my last. This is the first book on the West Virginia: Born of Rebellion’s Storm Series. I love how the author transported readers back to civil war time period. You can feel the tension with the war brewing coming off the pages.

This book took me on an emotional journey. Augusta is trying so hard to keep her farm going and along with her brother they’ve had to step up since their mother died and their Pa has been sick. Augusta and the Dabney family have differing view points then those around them. They welcome everyone and share the little they have.

Dr. James Hill turns down a position in the Confederate Army to serve in the Union Army. He also has a lot of baggage he’s carrying around. He’s not a huge fan of Augusta when he first meets her but when her barn is commandeered for a field hospital he gets to know her.

The author has done careful research and selected a great setting to show the tension that would have been felt with neighbors. The story is a slow build but very worth it.
The characters are well developed.

Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

Set during the Civil War, the story follows Augusta and the rest of her family as they find themselves
involved in helping the Union soldiers during the war. The author's exciting way of describing the war and the surrounding area shows a lot of research on her part. Every chapter written brings everything to a climax. There were so many instances that were intense and gripped my heart. I loved how the author weaved in God's word and how the characters responded.

The characters appeared real, with deep emotions and many layers, and they made history come alive. It is a heart-tugging romance as they face the ongoing war that brings disruption. The ending was a surprise. I list Kendy's books as one of those on my TBR pile. I can't wait to read more by her. Highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

Excellent!!! One of the best historical fiction stories I've read about the Civil War. I found myself immersed in this captivating story. The author has done her research into the Civil War especially in western Virginia and she combines this rich history with unforgettable characters, and powerful themes. Themes of family, healing, and faith mixed with "tragedies, secrets, regrets, and God’s undeniable grace" during times of war, division, and hatred. I was drawn into the story right away. This is the first book I have read by Kendy Pearson, I loved it, and highly recommend it! Heart-wrenching and heart warming.

Augusta Dabney "Gus", with the help of her best friend Melinda Jane, tends her home, farm, loving family including her siblings Fin, Will, Zander, and Bertie, and her dying father (Pap). She will do everything she can to keep her family together and keep their farm from the bank. Dr. James Hill is living regrets from his past. They live in a divided area as far as the sentiments towards slavery. He turns down a commission in the Confederate Army (and loses friends), and joins the Union as a Regimental Surgeon. "When the Dabney farm becomes a crossroads of colliding forces, Major Hill commandeers their barn for a hospital."

My favorite secondary figure is Gus's Pap's best friend Izzy and his kind, calm manner even when being mistreated by confederate prisoners. His faith and peace are a beautiful influence on the family and all he meets.

I did weep, and I did rejoice in this story. I highly recommend When the Mountains Wept for lovers of vivid storytelling, excellent historical fiction and inspirational stories. I am so glad there are more stories with these unforgettable characters, and I can't wait to read them.

When the Mountains Wept (West Virginia: Born of Rebellion's Storm, Book 1) by Kendy Pearson is an earnest and candid historical novel concerning the effects of the US Civil War on people’s lives. Two things struck me as I read this, first the conflicting emotions within the characters hearts. While the Dabney family abhorred slavery they had friends who joined the Confederate Army. It was difficult to see them do so but still they prayed for their friend’s safety. Then the characters would see despicable acts committed against slaves or free, serving to reinforce their beliefs against evil. Secondly, even if one tried to stay out of the war it seemed nearly impossible. Life was affected with both sides bringing skirmishes near to the farm. Yet everyday life went on with mortgages due and a dying father which gave their lives a surreal feel to it.

This heartfelt book is the most riveting book I have read this year. I can highly recommend it to all who read historical fiction no matter whether you usually read Christian novels or not.

I shouldn't have liked this book—because I hate war—but it was one of the best written books I've read in a long time. It places you right in the midst of the action, and the hearts of the characters. There were times I didn't want to be there—it was just too gut wrenching. But I'm glad I stuck with it to the end. I highly recommend it.

Kendy Pearson pens a heart-tugging historical romance, drawing the reader into the lives of those whose relationships are torn apart by the start of America's Civil War. This story is told through the eyes of characters who must make decisions based on their faith and values, or the lack thereof, as they navigate sudden upheaval in their lives. Every reader, whether new to inspirational historical fiction or a seasoned historian, will appreciate the accurate and rich period details included by the author. This book will appeal to both men and women interested in learning the details of an important event in United States history.

When the Mountains Wept is a great historical fiction novel. It’s a fun one to read and the second in a series. The cover is breathtaking. I love a good cover and this one immediately grabbed my attention. There is a lot going on in the cover and it fully captivated me.

Within the pages of this book, you will find amazing historical events. And also you’ll find some fiction. Within the fiction you’ll find a great Christian thread full of faith and forgiveness.

I am a huge lover of history. In fact, I started reenacting the Civil War when I was seven. And then I later met and married my husband through those Civil War events as well. Our kids have loved doing them as they’ve grown up as well. It gives me a special love for the books set within those years.

Have you ever read a book that pulls you in? Just completely sucks you into it and makes you think you’re living between the pages? This is one of those novels. It sucks you in and won’t let you leave. Even though at times it’s hard and not a good world to live in, you can’t leave because you might miss something.

The characters are amazing and I loved watching them grow and change through the novel. You cannot escape war no matter how hard you try. You cannot pretend that what is happening around you is a bad dream but rather must embrace your reality and live through it while also growing and hopefully surviving if not thriving.

Gus( or Augusta but I felt like we were friends so she was Gus to me) cares for her family. She wants to help them survive. She wants to care for them. But life is hard and so is her lot in life. I’m a nurturer by nature so I could identify with her.

Medicine has long been a fascination of mine. As a nurse, I have always loved seeing how medicine was done during the time periods of the books I read. We’ve made so many advances in medicine but sometimes old remedies do work still too.

This is the first book in a new series and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

When the Mountains Wept, I wept right along with it. This is a very emotional novel and tackles some tough subject matter, but it’s a conversation that needs to be had. Books about the Civil War are tough for me to read. So many innocent people did not want the war and were innocent, hard-working individuals that just wanted basic human rights for African Americans, a right that should’ve been there from the beginning.

The parallels to the beginning of the Civil War and what we are currently experiencing in our country are frightening to say the least, yet there is still hope despite the bleakness of it all. Just like those that lived during this time of war, we must continue to hold onto hope. Bitterness is blinding, and until you let it go and give it all to God, you’ll never experience freedom and everything God wants for you, even during times where hate seems to prevail.

The world building of this novel is absolutely incredible. From the moment I picked up this novel, I was transfixed, easily connecting to this sweet Virginia family who just wanted to continue their honest, hardworking existence but were thrown into the throes of war, losing more than any of them could’ve imagined. This story touches on some heavy subjects, so this sense of family and togetherness really helped bring balance to an otherwise depressing narrative. I can’t tell you just how thought-provoking this novel is. There were moments that made me physically sick to my stomach, the horrors depicted unimaginable, that were balanced with a sweet thread of family, love, and the fight for justice.

This is the first novel I’ve read by this author, and I am completely blown away. The heart of this novel is palpable, and I can’t believe how quickly I read through this story and what a profound effect it’s had on me. I cannot recommend this novel enough and can’t wait to see where this new series is going to take us next.

*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.

This gripping and well-researched Civil War story made me feel like I was there at the scenes of battle. While having read many historical fiction books about the Civil War, I had not read of the history of battles fought in western Virginia, now modern day West Virginia. I loved the interactions of the characters in the story. Augusta(Gus) Dabney and her family were an interesting group of characters—very different from each other and yet fiercely loyal to one another. Their fight to keep ownership of their family’s farm amid the constant threat of military skirmishes was both admirable and courageous. Dr. James Hill came to interact with the Dabneys when he became commissioned as a Union doctor and took over the family barn for use as a hospital. Enjoyed his character arc as he sought and eventually succeeded at overcoming significant issues from his past.

The pages depicting the battle scenes read more like a history textbook to me than that of a novel, going into great detail about troop movements and injuries. I recognize this is a novel about war, but the quantity and nature of the details felt too much for the plot of the story and its characters. Also, not sure if this was classified as historical fiction or romance, but the romance felt slow to develop and appeared to be very secondary to the story. However, I loved the spiritual themes in the book including forgiveness, discernment and personal faith and how lifelong friends Jonathan(Pap) and Izzy unabashedly pointed to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as the reason for their peace. I would recommend this book to readers of Christian historical fiction who enjoy stories with plenty of grit, action and strong spiritual messages.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and these are my own and honest opinions.

Christian Historical Fiction books are a favorite genre. When the Mountains Wept by Kendy Pearson is the lastest book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in the West Virginia: Born of Rebellion's Storm series.

I will admit it took a couple of chapters for me to get into the storyline. I enjoy stories set in the Cival War, but the storyline just wasn't making sense in the beginning, for me. Augusta Dabney and Dr. James Hill are the main characters in this book. Augusta Dabney is going through many trials in her life and then the war begins. Dr. James Hill decides to go against family and friends and joins the Union Army. He meets Augusta when the Dabney Farm becomes a Hospital to treat the Soliders during the War. Dr. Hill isn't too fond of Augusta until he really gets to know her. I will admit once I got past the first 2 chapters, I began to enjoy the book. Augusta and James both have "baggage" from their past that needs to be worked on individually. James really has some dark secrets and when revealed I was amazed at how Augusta handled everything. I feel the author did her research really well and makes the reader feel like they are there at the Civil War time. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction books based in War Time. GOOD BOOK!

Kendy Pearson starts off her West Virginia: Born of Rebellion's Storm series with When the Mountains Wept. I thought it was a great Civil War era novel. My family is from the mountains of Virginia, as well as, West Virginia. I thought the author did a great job what it was like for the people during this time. The historical details were so vivid. I adored getting to know Gus and James and I wanted to keep reading their story to find out how it would end for them.

When the Mountains Wept will be getting a five stars. I would give it one hundred if I could. I highly recommend it for fans of clean historical fiction, particularly those set during the American Civil War. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment from the West Virginia: Born of Rebellion's Storm series, When Heaven Thunders, to see what Kendy Pearson has in store for her characters.

I received a paperback copy of Kendy Pearson's When the Mountains Wept from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

This is one powerful and emotional read from the start to the end. Kendy Pearson captured the realism of all that was involved from the hatred to love, family/friends fighting against one another, and the wealthy inflicting hardship on the less fortunate at the start of the Civil War.

The dimensional characters with their views, values, and faith to the picturesque scenes placed me right in the midst of the action. There were plenty of tears, and heartbreak, but then I would have smiles and applaud as Augusta and others showed kindness, God’s love to the injured and assisting those in need. This historical fiction has a gentle slow romance as there were obstacles to overcome, but with God nothing is impossible.

Fans of Christian Historical or Civil War will not want to miss this book. I’ll be abiding my time till book two is released in the series.

"When the Mountains Wept" (West Virginia: Born of Rebellion’s Storm Book One) by Kendy Pearson is a wonderful read. I could see the scenes as I was reading. I really felt some of the character's pain and feelings. It seems like the author really researched the era and the specific battles and I learned a lot about what the war hospitals must have been liked. I especially loved the conversion between Izzy and Dr. Hill about being free and being a slave and that all men are like the slaves before they let Jesus into their lives because "He brought them not with money but with His own blood". If you like romance and Scriptural insight and real history and fiction in one novel, then I recommend this book. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

This story begins just before the Civil War starts, giving deep insight into the main characters before they end up needing to depend on each other. Dr. James Hill cares deeply for people of all colors, as does Augusta Dabney, but James judges her by her slave-holding relatives until he gets to know her better.

The author develops a cast of complex characters and describes the setting and action so well, it feels like we’re right there with them. With every skirmish that tests the doctor’s limited medical experience and raises his estimation of Augusta, the strong emotions seem to leech off the page and into the reader’s heart.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author asking for an honest review.

When the Mountains Wept, by Kendy Pearson, is my first taste of historical fiction, and I’m hooked! In this Civil War story, there is violence and bloodshed, racism and injustice, and love blooming in the midst of it all. A fierce loyalty to family and faith underscores the action. The vivid writing makes each scene come alive and helps us experience the emotions of the characters. To top it off, Kendy teases the reader with deep secrets in the characters lives. We must read on.

This is the kind of book I don’t want to finish reading, so I’m delighted that two more books are coming in the series!

I have read and enjoyed countless stories set during the Civil War and always enjoy reading a new one that can add to what I know about the time period. I loved that the focus of this one was on West Virginia and showed how things changed for old friends when the time came to choose a side, dividing families and friendships.

The author does a wonderful job of bringing not only the time period to life, but also the characters. I enjoyed getting to know them. Both James and Augusta have their secrets, and it was interesting when everything came out. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!

When the Mountains Wept by Kendy Pearson was an amazing book. It had it all. Family dynamics, layered characters, drama, comedic relief, heartbreak, joy. Even some whimsy. I was thrilled with the dialect and accents she so easily traveled through from one character to the next. And it had what I love most: God’s grace and family love and devotion. This is book 1 in her West Virginia: Born of Rebellion’s Story and I can’t wait to dive into book 2 ;)

Oh my heart! I cannot wait to read the 2nd book of this series.
Living in Fayette County, I know where all the places mentioned in the book are. I can picture some of this in my head as I'm reading.
The detail the author provides from surgery to killings made my stomach turn at times that these events truly happened.
Brother against brother, women left behind to man farms, mothers left childless all due to war. The author shows the historical aspects along with the emotional aspects of the Civil War.

Vivid scenes made me feel like I was reading a movie script. This book is so action packed it was hard to put it down. I cringed as I felt the pain the character experienced and other times I braced myself for what was going to happen next.

The author does a wonderful job of knitting scripture into the story without making it offensive to people with other beliefs. She gave me a glimpse into that time period and I can hardly wait until the next book is released!

Loved this book by Kendy Pearson. Careful attention to historical accuracy, great characters, and a riveting plot pulled me into the story and kept me up reading much too late at night! Great Characters

The mix of mischievous, confused, and compassionate characters and their growth and interactions in the midst of difficult circumstances was engaging. I loved the faith aspect of this story as well—besides historical fiction being my favorite way of learning aspects of real history.

Augusta held her family together, until the Civil War came to her doorstep. James was a doctor in the Union Army who conscripted her family farm for a hospital. The battle for West Virginia, home to both of them and divided by North/South loyalties nearly tore them apart. I learned a lot while reading this book and education of our past is important. Thank you Kendy Pearson.

Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC of this book. An historical story set during the Civil Was. Such a tragic time in our history, the book was full of the awful affects of war. I had a hard time enjoying reading this book although it was well written and the main characters were heroic and brave. A 3.5 rating.
