Everyone I know has some type of childhood trauma of various degrees. Through the decades healthcare professionals have learned ways to help people overcome these challenges. Being a psychology lover, I am always interested in learning new insights into techniques of treatment. I came across this book and decided I wanted to see authors Sostenes Lima and Erica Lima perspective.
This workbook is set up to help people who have childhood trauma recover by empowering adult survivors with resources and skills they need to heal old wounds and replace unhealthy defense mechanisms with much healthier coping strategies. This book also gives information by providing guided exercises with tools and techniques that will help the difficult healing journey. The book provides information on different therapies to help survivors choose which one that might be best for their journey. One function of the book I like is that it allows the survivor to choose their own pace that works for them. The book is chocked full of great advice and help, and I think it would be perfect for any survivor of childhood trauma.

This book is a fantastic resource for self Help, self care and healing from childhood trauma. The workbook is self healing and helping therapy which guides you through your journey. Personally for me I found it very hard to focus and follow through the workbook as it is not exactly written for those with Childhood Complex Trauma-PTSD. I have attempted to read but found that it gave me an overwhelming feeling that I first needed to get appropriate support of therapy before embarking on following this journey in the workbook. I highly recommend that if reading this book gives you triggers as it did for me please seek professional guidance and theory then return to this workbook.

“When worn for too long, protective armor can feel heavy and restrictive. This workbook, authored by two licensed therapists, presents a refreshing perspective on healing by emphasizing that revisiting traumatic experiences is not always necessary. Instead, it provides alternative strategies to support recovery and personal growth. The workbook is designed to be an adjunct to therapy, making it a valuable resource for individuals seeking additional tools for their healing journey. Its insights into how protective mechanisms can become burdensome highlight the authors' deep understanding of trauma and recovery. Overall, it’s a helpful guide for those looking to complement their therapeutic work with actionable, research-backed strategies.

Thank you Zeitgeist for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Part 1 is basically a long introduction (in a good way). Parts 2, 3 and 4 contain exercises regarding relationships, stability, attachments, grounding, and many more topics, some harder to do than others but all equally helpful.
In each exercise you’ll get an introduction, what you need to complete it and then instructions in clear, detailed steps.
This is a book that you kind of have to go back to many times as it’s full of exercises and you just can’t do them all while reading. But I learned some interesting things and tried out some helpful exercises that I will definitely be doing again. For example the bilateral stimulation.

This is a great resource for anyone who is working through trauma endured in childhood. There are lots of journaling prompts and exercises that can guide you in the healing process. The authors are both Licensed Clinical Social Workers and focus on trauma-informed care, which is important so as not to re-traumatize yourself in the healing process. I think therapy is always the best bet when dealing with a complicated past that includes trauma. Still, this book would be a great place to start for someone who might not yet be able to afford counseling or wants to dip their toe in before seeking professional help. *Free copy provided by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

I’m embarrassed to report that I previously purchased an expensive program which turned out to be far less comprehensive and actionable as this little gem of a book.
Overcoming Your Childhood Trauma is descriptive and thoughtful without being too wordy. It’s full of short, manageable exercises geared toward healing trauma. It asks little of your time, yet does require commitment. I’ve tried the first two exercises, and found both helpful. I do plan to purchase a hard copy and follow the entire plan- it’s that good

Thank you to NetGalley, author’s Sostenes B Lima and Erica Lima and Penguin Random House publishing for the opportunity to review this book.

I have numerous books on trauma and mental health but not many compare to the detailed exercises found in this book. This would make a great addition to in person therapy with a professional.
