In English, he is best known for his popular 1980 novel The Name of the Rose, a historical mystery combining semiotics in fiction with biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory, as well as Foucault's Pendulum, his 1988 novel which touches on similar themes.
Eco wrote prolifically throughout his life, with his output including children's books, translations from French and English, in addition to a twice-monthly newspaper column "La Bustina di Minerva" (Minerva's Matchbook) in the magazine L'Espresso beginning in 1985, with his last column (a critical appraisal of the Romantic paintings of Francesco Hayez) appearing 27 January 2016. At the time of his death, he was an Emeritus professor at the University of Bologna, where he taught for much of his life. In the 21st century, he has continued to gain recognition for his 1995 essay "Ur-Fascism", where Eco lists fourteen general properties he believes comprise fascist ideologies.

Tocmai lucrez la un eseu despre liste 葯i mi-am amintit c膬, 卯n volumul de fa葲膬, exist膬 un lung text intitulat 鈥濴iste personale鈥�. Textul este cu adev膬rat personal, fiindc膬 Eco se refer膬 la propriile liste (sau enumer膬ri) create 葯i risipite 卯n romanele lui mai vechi. To葲i prozatorii importan葲i au fost fascina葲i de liste, de la Cervantes la Philip Roth sau Thomas Pynchon.
脦n cazul lui Eco, fascina葲ia / obsesia e devoratoare. Probabil c膬 enumerarea cea mai frumoas膬 (m膬car 卯n opinia mea) este aceea din Baudolino, care descrie (printr-o 卯n葯iruire minu葲ioas膬 de minerale) r卯ul Sambatyon. Este un r卯u de piatr膬 葯i vine din tradi葲ia rabinic膬. C膬l膬torii spre 葰ara preotului Ioan ajung pe malul lui exact 卯n momentul 卯n care soarele transform膬 acest lapidariu mobil 卯ntr-o 葲卯葯nire de luciri 葯i sc卯nteieri:

Todos conocemos al Umberto Eco novelista, pero yo, con la excepci贸n de 鈥淓l nombre de la rosa鈥� sigo eligiendo al Eco ensayista.
Su erudici贸n y sabidur铆a brillan en este libro, 鈥淐onfesiones de un joven novelista鈥� en la que Eco descolla en su arte, la literatura de alto vuelo.
El libro, dividido en cuatro partes consta, en primer lugar en la descripci贸n de los procesos de elaboraci贸n de sus novelas principales, a saber, 鈥淓l nombre de la rosa鈥�, 鈥淏audolino鈥�, 鈥淟a isla del d铆a de antes鈥� y 鈥淓l p茅ndulo de Foucault鈥�.
En los siguientes dos apartados, nos cuenta cu谩les han sido los modelos de inspiraci贸n para sus novelas, pasando por sus libros, personajes y autores m谩s queridos.
Por 煤ltimo, en el cap铆tulo 鈥淢is listas鈥� realiza un ejercicio muy interesante que es el de detallarnos las listas de personajes, cosas o libros que aparecen en las novelas m谩s importantes, entre ellas 鈥淟a odisea鈥� de Homero, el 鈥淯lises鈥� de James Joyce, 鈥淓l Aleph鈥� de Jorge Luis Borges y sus propias listas, creadas en las novelas de su autor铆a.
En resumidas cuentas, 鈥淐onfesiones de un joven novelista鈥� es un ensayo m谩s que interesante sobre la literatura que uno podr铆a leer junto a 鈥淓l 煤ltimo lector鈥� de Ricardo Piglia o 鈥淓l lector com煤n鈥� de Virginia Woolf.

These lectures are extremely interesting, yet unfulfilling, especially regarding the final one My Lists鈥攖his appears to be the kernel of the wonderful Infinity of Lists. The lush illustrations and citations of the latter are missing here. More challenging was the absurd Some Remarks on Fictional Characters. I recommend this for only Eco Completionists.

I have always enjoyed reading Umberto Eco's work: he has a style that is charming and informative at the same time, often showing his erudition as a semantic analyst, and as a commentator on modern life and linguistics. In other words, he is accessible as a writer; he is clear about where he stands on various issues; he basically respects the reader, and expects the reader to respect him as well.
That being said, how one 'takes' this particular book will depend on how seriously Eco himself is about his subject. Take it all too seriously, and one might find oneself thinking what a pompous ass the author is, and one might find it all too alienating. The title if this work, however, should give us a clue that Eco is really writing 'tongue-in-cheek'. For someone who has published extensively over the years, he began he 'career' as a novelist when he was about 50 (although he tells us that he 'began' to write novels in his childhood), and is now about 77; and during that twenty-seven year period he has published 'only' five novels. It is 'obvious' that therefore he should be considered as a mere novice, as a 'young' novelist. Joke.
The first chapter deals with How to Write a Novel: and Eco tells us honestly what he feels he needs to do: but by the time one gets through this, I suspect his 'revelations' will deter just about any budding novelist to even start the journey! Chapter 2 deals essentially with authors, texts and interpreters. Here we are introduced into the general world of 'interpretation', and get an insight into the 'problems' presented by these three subjects. We are allowed to 'see' how the self-generated concerns of analysts and theorists get themselves into complex quagmires: whether the 'author' exists; whether the 'text' means anything; and whether various interpretations are all 'valid' or not鈥� Eco reveals, for example, that there are certain aspects he, as author, intends the general public to perceive; then he tells us that there are also bits of information which only the more erudite of scholars are meant to 'pick up' (thus creating a form of elitist reader, different from the masses); finally, there are the interpreters, who provide 'insights' which even Eco himself was not aware of 鈥� and these tend to split into two types: insights which, while the author was not originally aware of them, nevertheless can be considered valid and in general agreement with the work in question; and those insights which the author does not accept as being valid at all. The problems of translators are touched on: what words, exactly, can actually convey the intentions of the original into the language of another culture? How 'true' is a translator who works more 'freely' as compared with one who is more 'literal'? These, of course, are 'serious' problems for the analysts and the professors of linguistics; but simply being made aware of them suggests there is a simple way out: who cares, really?
By the time one gets to Chapter 3, which deals about the 'reality' of fictional characters, and how we are moved and upset more by the suicide (for example) of Anna Karenina than by similar events in 'real life' that we really start entering the Twilight Zone: ontological considerations battle with semantic considerations; theoretical disputations that would fit in beautifully with the meanderings of Mediaeval Scholars; psychological aspects are thrown in; and post-modernist multi-definition multi-interpretative highly 'adjectivised' neologisms are thrown hither and thither. Eco is clever enough to write clearly about these issues (and therein lies the true value, in my opinion, of a book such as this), but in the end one cannot help feeling that one needs to remind these academics: it's only a novel!
Chapter 4 on 'lists' is the culmination of this work: the author has truly entered another world more akin to insanity (or at least dealing with a severe case of literary autism and/or obsessive compulsive disorder). This Chapter is a masterpiece of writing dealing with this disorder. If you thought you knew what a list is, this chapter will explain how little you know! We are given many examples of eccentric lists found in many modern novelists, including Eco himself, which seem to go on forever and ever, the author either unable or unwilling to relent, subjecting the poor reader with boredom, irritation, and general ennui, as the author shows off his 'erudition' and his obsession to a nauseating degree and beyond, and with little insight or illumination.
The book ends: "Lists: a pleasure to read and to write. These are the confessions of a young writer." For me, that is the biggest joke of all. Long, elaborate, unnecessary lists are NOT a pleasure to read; nor, I suspect, a pleasure to write. While confessing to be an aficionado of such lists is at least an honest comment on his own works, ironically I agree that such a confession is indeed that of a young writer 鈥� and by 'young' I mean 'immature'. So from that perspective at least, Eco is indeed a 'young' novelist. Nudge-nudge, wink-wink! Joke! How ironic!
What's wonderful about this small book, therefore, is the fact that the reader is allowed to come to a certain knowledge and understanding of just how insane modern critiques can become if one allows their 'seriousness' to dominate. For someone who has published extensively over the years, he began he 'career' as a novelist when he was about 50 (although he tells us that he 'began' to write novels in his childhood), and is now about 77; and during that twenty-seven year period he has published 'only' five novels. It is 'obvious' that therefore he should be considered as a mere novice, as a 'young' novelist. Joke.
The first chapter deals with How to Write a Novel: and Eco tells us honestly what he feels he needs to do: but by the time one gets through this, I suspect his 'revelations' will deter just about any budding novelist to even start the journey! Chapter 2 deals essentially with authors, texts and interpreters. Here we are introduced into the general world of 'interpretation', and get an insight into the 'problems' presented by these three subjects. We are allowed to 'see' how the self-generated concerns of analysts and theorists get themselves into complex quagmires: whether the 'author' exists; whether the 'text' means anything; and whether various interpretations are all 'valid' or not鈥� Eco reveals, for example, that there are certain aspects he, as author, intends the general public to perceive; then he tells us that there are also bits of information which only the more erudite of scholars are meant to 'pick up' (thus creating a form of elitist reader, different from the masses); finally, there are the interpreters, who provide 'insights' which even Eco himself was not aware of 鈥� and these tend to split into two types: insights which, while the author was not originally aware of them, nevertheless can be considered valid and in general agreement with the work in question; and those insights which the author does not accept as being valid at all. The problems of translators are touched on: what words, exactly, can actually convey the intentions of the original into the language of another culture? How 'true' is a translator who works more 'freely' as compared with one who is more 'literal'? These, of course, are 'serious' problems for the analysts and the professors of linguistics; but simply being made aware of them suggests there is a simple way out: who cares, really?
By the time one gets to Chapter 3, which deals about the 'reality' of fictional characters, and how we are moved and upset more by the suicide (for example) of Anna Karenina than by similar events in 'real life' that we really start entering the Twilight Zone: ontological considerations battle with semantic considerations; theoretical disputations that would fit in beautifully with the meanderings of Mediaeval Scholars; psychological aspects are thrown in; and post-modernist multi-definition multi-interpretative highly 'adjectivised' neologisms are thrown hither and thither. Eco is clever enough to write clearly about these issues (and therein lies the true value, in my opinion, of a book such as this), but in the end one cannot help feeling that one needs to remind these academics: it's only a novel!
Chapter 4 on 'lists' is the culmination of this work: the author has truly entered another world more akin to insanity (or at least dealing with a severe case of literary autism and/or obsessive compulsive disorder). This Chapter is a masterpiece of writing dealing with this disorder. If you thought you knew what a list is, this chapter will explain how little you know! We are given many examples of eccentric lists found in many modern novelists, including Eco himself, which seem to go on forever and ever, the author either unable or unwilling to relent, subjecting the poor reader with boredom, irritation, and general ennui, as the author shows off his 'erudition' and his obsession to a nauseating degree and beyond, and with little insight or illumination.
The book ends: "Lists: a pleasure to read and to write. These are the confessions of a young writer." For me, that is the biggest joke of all. Long, elaborate, unnecessary lists are NOT a pleasure to read; nor, I suspect, a pleasure to write. While confessing to be an aficionado of such lists is at least an honest comment on his own works, ironically I agree that such a confession is indeed that of a young writer 鈥� and by 'young' I mean 'immature'. So from that perspective at least, Eco is indeed a 'young' novelist. Nudge-nudge, wink-wink! Joke! How ironic!
What's wonderful about this small book, therefore, is the fact that the reader is allowed to come to a certain knowledge and understanding of just how insane modern critiques can become if one allows their 'seriousness' to dominate. Treat it lightly, however, and it allows one to become amused at the pretence; and perhaps one can even learn to forgive them.

Eco's short non-fic works are always far better than his longer diatribes. Three parts memorably tantalized: 1) discussion of the "ideal reader", 2) discussion of the ontology of fictional characters (plenty of Kripke included), and 3) discussion of Lists, which has a fittingly vortical trajectory. M谩s por sus equ铆vocos que por sus muchos aciertos. As铆 se define "Confesiones de un Joven Novelista". Porque, al contrario de lo que parece sugerir el nombre, no se trata de memorias; quien escribe no es, en rigor, un joven novelista; y, en las m谩s de 200 p谩gs. que presenta el volumen, no asoma la nariz confesi贸n alguna. La obra es, simplemente, un conjunto de interesant铆simos ensayos. Cuatro, para hablar con propiedad.
驴Su origen? Otros tantos salones de conferencias de prestigiosas universidades europeas. Sin embargo, estos textos tienen algo en com煤n. Un aspecto que constituye su fortaleza, pero, a la vez, su debilidad: la maravillosamente erudita, aunque demasiado estridente, voz de su autor. Estridente porque no se conforma con la mediocridad de papeles secundarios sino que asume, megal贸mana, el rol protag贸nico. Porque impide al lector olvidar, por un 铆nfimo segundo, que Umberto alias "Sin H" Eco es la verdadera estrella. El centro de todo. No importa que aquello sobre lo que se haya propuesto discurrir sean obras literarias. Quiz谩s en ese sentido -y s贸lo en ese sentido- est茅 justificado el t铆tulo del libro.
Su estructura se organiza en cuatro partes. En primer lugar, hay un interesant铆simo cap铆tulo sobre la metodolog铆a de Eco para la creaci贸n de sus novelas, que sin duda resultar谩 de gran utilidad para el prospectivo novelista que todo lector lleva dentro. A continuaci贸n, el autor escribe un tratado apasionante sobre los roles (complementarios) del escritor y el lector para construir el sentido de cualquier obra literaria. Sigue una descripci贸n del modo en que concebimos a los personajes de ficci贸n, que incluye un intento de explicar por qu茅 nos conmueven tanto, incluso hasta alcanzar la universalidad. Y entonces negrea en el horizonte, ominoso, el 煤ltimo cap铆tulo: una secci贸n interminable sobre las listas.

Esto incluye una tediosa taxonom铆a de los listados de lugares, personas y cosas, y una transcripci贸n -s贸lo quien la lee entiende cu谩n innecesaria- de los fragmentos de las obras de Eco que se organizan de este manera. Justo en ese momento, a unos pocos pasos de doblar la esquina definitiva que llevar谩 al final de un libro glorioso, el aburrimiento se desploma sobre la cabeza del desprevenido lector con el peso de una maceta.
Pero que no haya confusiones: se trata de una excelente lectura. O, al menos, lo ser铆a de no mediar la infinitud final de listas. Eco (despu茅s de todo, un hombre brillante) produce una gran obra metaliteraria (acerca de la literatura misma) y su prosa brilla con sus an茅cdotas y su claridad conceptual. Facilita una excelente oportunidad para reflexionar sobre la literatura y descubrir por qu茅 atrapa y maravilla tanto. Eso es lo que da indiscutible valor a este libro. M谩s all谩 de los infortunados -aunque seguramente intencionales- equ铆vocos de su nombre.

Interesting essays in this collection, but I hate to confess that after reading them, I like Eco a lot less. The man is entirely too impressed with his own cleverness, and his crowing about himself gets irritating pretty quickly. The four essays cover his personal notes on his books, some aspects of critical theory (heavy on the semiotic analysis of fiction), and his use of list-making. Most useful (but hard to follow) is the essay "Author, Text, and Interpreters". He presents a model of author-reader relations that is constructed of the Empirical Author (the puppet-master that creates the work), the Model Reader (the entity for whom the Empirical Author is writing), the Empirical Reader (who tries to shake free of the puppet-master's strings to view the Empirical Author), and finally, the Model Author, the construct of the two readers. Kind of complicated, but it's a way to understand modern authors and their tricks. In particular, although he doesn't suggest it, I think this model is the ideal way to understand Nabokov, who as the Empirical Author went to great lengths to remain invisible to his Empirical Readers.
There are some interesting insights in the book, and I would certainly recommend it to any fan of Eco who wishes to understand some of the technical aspects of his writing style.

Disfrut茅 bastante este libro, llevo solo dos lecturas de Eco pero ya se esta convirtiendo en uno de mis autores favoritos. Recomendar铆a este libro en espec铆fico a personas que quieren aprender del proceso creativo de grandes escritores, hasta ahora es de los libros que m谩s me ha servido. Cabe mencionar que utiliza muchos ejemplos de sus novelas, tambi茅n los explica, si no las has le铆do no pasa nada, las cita, pero siempre brinda un plus el estar familiarizado. Autor, texto, interpretaci贸n, ficci贸n, lectores, argumentos y contraargumentos, hay una gran variedad de puntos 煤tiles en el ensayo, y lo que m谩s ayuda es que esta escrito de una manera muy amigable, es muy f谩cil comprender lo que Eco escribe. Al final a帽ade un extra al ensayo, "Las listas", para mi gusto aqu铆 es donde flaque贸 un poco, no es que sea malo pero me parece que lo sobreextendio, sobretodo con las citas, hay varias que son de m谩s de dos p谩ginas, quiz谩 y sea parte de su argumento, al hacer este cap铆tulo tambi茅n como una especie de letan铆a, pero como ya dije, para mi gusto, con menos era suficiente.

O livro 茅 composto por 4 ensaios que fizeram parte de uma palestra do autor.
1) "Escrevendo da esquerda para a direita," foi o que mais gostei. Aqui o Eco discorre um pouco sobre a defini莽茫o de escrita criativa e seu processo de escrita
2) "O autor, o texto e os int茅rpretes" 茅 um ensaio interessante sobre as ideias e prefer锚ncias do Eco entre conceitos e teorias sobre interpreta莽茫o, tipos de autores, escritores, narrativas...
3) "Algumas observa莽玫es sobre os personagens fict铆cios". Esse ensaio achei chato, muito repetitivo e talvez tenha me desagradado por ser limitado a uma an谩lise semi贸tica para explicar a identifica莽茫o, apego e empatia do leitor com alguns personagens. N茫o gostei.
4) "Minhas listas". Aqui o autor nos passa seu amor 脿s listas. O ensaio cont茅m muitos trechos de textos para ilustrar cada ponto. Achei desnecess谩rio e mais uma vez, me deu uma ideia de for莽ar um pouco (exagero) para encher lingui莽a falar o mesmo, se repetir e extender algo que se poderia dizer em 2 par谩grafos.
Acho que esperava outra coisa. Queria mais do processo de escrita, conhecer mais o autor, criador e sua din芒mica de trabalho, tamb茅m seria legal alguma an谩lise cr铆tica liter谩ria(cita v谩rias para marcar um mesmo ponto), ou uma contextualiza莽茫o da sua obra, ou alguma confiss茫o do Eco romancista...

Minu jaoks oli ehk k玫ige silmiavavam teost teine essee "Autor, tekst ja t玫lgendajad", mis arutles selle 眉le, kus l盲heb see piir puhta autori m玫tte ja lugejas tekkinud tema ettekujutuse vahel. Huvitav oli ka kolmanda essee see osa, kus Eco v玫rdles v盲lismaailma fakte ja kirjandusteoste fakte ning k玫neles liikuvatest tegelastest. dos cosas no me gustaron de este libro, y ambas est谩n relacionadas: la primera es la falsa modestia de eco de decir "soy un joven novelista"; la segunda es la confirmaci贸n de esa falsa modestia: eco cita y cita y cita largamente sus propias obras, principalmente en la parte final --"mis listas"--. no que eso est茅 mal per se: nom谩s que a m铆 no me gusta. no tengo un argumento para descalificarlo.

el resto del libro es cosa aparte. eco comienza a desmenuzar el proceso creativo --quiz谩 ser铆a m谩s efectivo o preciso decir su proceso creativo-- de escritura de sus novelas, y esto es harto interesante. por ejemplo, eco dice que la creaci贸n de sus novelas parte de una imagen --lo que las convertir铆a en una suerte de 茅cfrasis--, y que 茅l desarrolla esa imagen y lo que hay detr谩s de ella, confecciona lo que debe suceder para que esa imagen se lleve a cabo: el resultado de esa confecci贸n es, naturalmente, una novela. este punto es lind铆simo, y seguro funcionar谩 para cierto tipo de novelas y para otro no --por ejemplo, no me imagino una novela introspectiva trazada de esta forma, pero s铆 una novela policial o detectivesca, que es una cosa que a m铆 me interesa un poco m谩s--, pero no deja de tener cierta p谩tina de inter茅s para el lector o el escritor en general.

eco tambi茅n abunda en la relaci贸n entre el lector y la interpretaci贸n de la obra. es relativamente laxo --admite que cualquier interpretaci贸n es v谩lida-- pero tambi茅n aprieta tantito el lazo, como buen acad茅mico (no he le铆do tanta teor铆a, pero me da la impresi贸n de que la locura de la interpretaci贸n no es una cosa muy cultivada en la academia), y dice que interpretaciones pueden ser desestimadas por "poco econ贸micas"; empero, acepta que como autor emp铆rico, debe ajustarse a lo que diga el lector y jam谩s coartar la interpretaci贸n, sino cultivarla.

hay adem谩s un apartado (ligeramente complejo; quiz谩 el apartado t茅oricamente m谩s dif铆cil del libro) en el que habla de los ofe --objetos f铆sicamente existentes-- y su relaci贸n con el lector y, m谩s interesante a煤n, su relaci贸n con los personajes de ficci贸n, que no existen pero como si existieran. quisiera hablar m谩s de eso, pero apenas lo voy procesando bien a bien, y esto es precisamente lo que m谩s me gust贸 de este libro: que, para un iletrado como yo, le resulta inesperadamente luminoso que le hablen de estas cosas en perfecto espa帽ol.
