I was really suprised how much I liked it. I always loved Fullmetal Alchemist, but not really the other mangas the author has made.
But this was funny, action packed and at times very dark, just as Fullmetal Alchemist. I'm looking forward to keep reading the series.

The first chapter? The first chapter is amazing. Things sort of go downhill from there, but if you don't mind that Hiromu Arakawa has roughly six character designs, it's still a fun read.

Hiromu Arakawa, creator of the excellent Silver Spoon series, the pretty good Full Metal Alchemist series, and the very dumb Hero Tales series, is back with a new fantasy tale with lots of action and demons.

Yuru is a teenager living a fairly decent life in his ancient mountain village, hunting to feed everyone and looking for things to amuse his confined twin sister. But then the village is attacked by outsiders and Yuru learns how little he truly knows of the place where he lives and the world beyond it.

This aims for that same balance of drama, humor, and action as Full Metal Alchemist and does a good job of hitting the target. I feel pretty good about continuing with this for a while, but I do hope the cast size stays about where it is right now so the main characters stay in focus instead of getting lost in the crowd as Edward and Alphonse did in the ever-expanding epic sprawl of Full Metal Alchemist.

FOR REFERENCE:

Contents: Chapter 1. Asa and Yuru -- Chapter 2. Right and Left -- Chapter 3. Dera and Hana -- Chapter 4. Ai and Makoto -- A Great Pair -- Cowshed Diaries 1. The Tale of Makoto -- Cowshed Diaries 2. The Tale of Ai -- Right and Left (with Base) -- Dera's Pendant -- Translation Notes -- Author Commentary -- Next Volume -- [Epilogue]

[chapters 1-35, ~volumes 1-9] Fullmetal Alchemist is infamous for dropping you into the story/conflict pretty quick, but after the explosive opening sequence, this often felt as though Daemons of the Shadow Realm starts on the second arc, after the initial antagonist has already joined the friend group. I get why a seasoned author would hesitate to commit another ten years to a sweeping fantasy epic, but a lot of character charm is lost in the pacing, and most of the story takes place in what feels like a 10 square mile radius of 2-3 locations. Everything¡¯s really modern, but in a tumblr OC ¡°artist who¡¯s super eager to reveal that their character who LOOKS cute? they¡¯re actually Fucked Up¡± kind of way, also your entire webcomic cast is 19 and they all have guns.

The fantasy premise of magic users with a Cosmo/Wanda pair is fun, though, and Hiromu Arakawa¡¯s designed a lot of GREAT Cosmo and Wandas. Right Hand and Left Hand are obviously super likable, and the two aliens with a dog are immediate contenders for all time greats. At the best of times I was reminded how good she was at writing married couple dynamics in FMA, but also at nine volumes in, I would¡¯ve hoped for a liiiiittle bit¡more.

Who knows - it¡¯s clearly been ramping up towards the second wave of characters, and Ling Yao wasn¡¯t introduced until chapter 32 of FMA, and the eternal anime boyfriend Greedling, chapter 55. Maybe the dad¡¯s gonna turn out to be CRAZY hot.

This thing has such a fun first chapter, but with each successive chapter, it turns more and more into a rote game of shonen mad libs.

That said, it's still got Arakawa's incredibly solid artwork behind it and she can still write fun characters/comedy, but it mostly just made me want to reread FMA/Silver Spoon.

Love!!! So excited to read this series and the first volume was really strong. There's a lot of world building exposition but it's still an action packed series of events.

I'm really enjoying the fun characters and the silly elements that give the story a similar tone to that of Fullmetal Alchemist. Excited to see where the story goes and what it looks like when/if there are darker storylines!!!

It sets up some mysteries and questions. The biggest one is can Yuru trust Dera? Also who is the bad guy? Gab seems bad but she likes Asa. And what's the deal with Jin? Is he good, bad or just tired?

A promising start to a new series. I really enjoy Hiromu Arakawa's other manga, so I was really opptimistic about this one, then quickly became sad when helicopters came in.

I'm not fond of the modern day setting.

This reminds me strongly of Shaman King and The Golden Compass, with the daemons/soul bounded sidekicks. Sadly not my favorite trope so this will likely be my least favorite series.

I do wish the character designs were a little different than Arakawa's other characters, but I guess that's her style.

That being said it was action packed and setup the plot and mysteries neatly in this first volume. There's also all the expected humor there, which is fun.

For me, I'll probably wait for the anime adaptation to continue.

I'm so-so on this one. I'm not fully engaged with the story and the characters yet but Arakawa's story telling is as strong as ever. Reading her work is as easy as drinking water.

Note: This is my rating and review for the entire series.

I¡¯d give this a 2.5/5 stars.

Coming from the mangaka of Fullmetal Alchemist, I was already eager to pick this manga up. The first chapter it probably the craziest first chapter I¡¯ve ever read and got my excited to continue. Yet, it hasn¡¯t really done anything interesting with what it set up.

I do still hold some interest, so I hope it gets better.

I'm not yet sure how I feel about this series. I'm a sucker for 's work, since her style is reliably consistent while being technically detailed when needed (though a lot of that may be due to assistants¡ªhazard of manga is not knowing how much is actually the "artist's" work and how much is farmed out in the name of meeting deadlines).

The main problem I have is I still want to associate, say, character A who looks like character B with that character, just because it's admittedly very hard a lot of the time to make distinctly different (human) faces while still making them realistic. A big thing had going for it was that Yuugo looks distinctly like his own character, where Yuru and look strongly like ... or, I guess Yuru is slightly more ... point is, the major characters still look fairly identical. (Hana is definitely .)

I feel like the major twist* is revealed too suddenly, though! Like, it feels like it should've been a bigger deal than that, especially since I saw it coming despite how the beginning is set up! At the same time, I can't think of a better way to tell the story that isn't dragging things out for the sake of it. It's very well-paced (beyond my weird hang-up)!

Overall, more recommended for fans of Fullmetal Alchemist than of The Legend of Arslan (though still skewing more toward fans of either of those than of Silver Spoon). It feels heavily more like another FMA, which is good! I just have some weird feelings about it at the moment that I can't explain... probably similar to how it took me some time to get over the sort of downer of the first "arc" of FMA to really appreciate the story it was telling.

*I say "the" as though there's only one, haha. Ha.

Chronique compl¨¨te :

Extrait :

This is by the author of my most favourite manga series and series in general so I have very high expectations for this series. I usually try to keep my expectations very low but that's hard to do when they have written your most favourite series ever! Thankfully, I wasn't disappointed, I really enjoyed this volume.

Is it just me or does Yoru look like Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist? In the beginning I wasn't sure if he was a boy or a girl until one of the characters cleared it up. I asked my sister if the person on the cover looked like a boy or a girl? And she said boy. So I think it might be a me thing or it might just be some of us who have read Fullmetal Alchemist and or watched one or both of the anime series.

I like the main character Yoru, his daemons and some of the other characters. The female daemon, I think her name is Left kind of reminds me of Izumi, although she has more calm moments. I'm not sure how I feel about Yoru's sister Asa yet.

I'm very interested in the secrets of the village and what's going on with the twins.
I also love how you can't be sure which side is good. Should Yoru side with the villagers? Should he side with the other group? Or should he just do whatever he wants? He might end up having his own little group like other anime main characters do.

Overall, I really enjoyed this volume and can't wait to see what happens next. Unfortunately vol. 2 isn't coming out until September 2? I really wanted to know what happens in chapter 5 after that cliffhanger and couldn't wait so I looked up the chapters online and read chapter 5 and then had to force myself to stop before reading chapter 6 because I knew I would just keep reading and I really want to read in physical format (I want to read all manga in physical if possible) so I'm going to try to be patient for vol. 2. I don't think this series will ever be as good as Fullmetal Alchemist but I'm pretty it will still be good and become a favourite of mine.

I love pretty much everything Arakawa has produced but for some reason read the first 18 pages of this twice before finishing this volume. And I know it's 18 pages exactly because 1) I remember the medicine seller visiting the village starting on page 15 but 2) not .

Anyway, that hooked me pretty good and I stayed up way too late last night finishing this.

Any reviews of future volumes won't be able to avoid the major spoiler above, but I'll try for this one: Yuru (Yul?) and his twin sister Asa are born in a small village, Yuru (his name means "night" in their mother's native language) just before dawn and Asa (Japanese for "morning") just after. 16 years later, Yuru hunts game and helps the other villagers with bringing in the harvest while Asa...uh, spends all her time devoted to something that keeps her locked up in the dark under the castle. The village is struggling a bit with drought; some villagers are leaving to seek work in the wider world, but Yuru swears to Asa that he won't. He'll never leave her, unlike their parents.

...so of course he's forced to flee the village before the end of the first chapter, when it comes under attack by mysterious figures. In the process, he learns that he's a "tsugai user," with "tsugai" being this story's catchall term for the minor gods, spirits, demons, ghosts, goblins, etc from traditional Japanese culture, and that the statues that have guarded the entrance to the village his whole life are in fact, his own personal daemons.

After the success of Fullmetal Alchemist, the English-language manga publishing industry seems to have taken the approach of translating everything Arakawa produces (save her autobiographical series on growing up on a dairy farm in rural Hokkaido), so the first three volumes were published in English while this sat on my dresser for the last 13 months, whoops.
