ONE MOMENT. TWO MASKS.

THREE CHASES INTO THE NIGHT.

They’re supposed to be enemies.

It takes one night with a masked man to change that all. They crave the next touch of the person they hate the most. Desperate for that next taste of the person they can’t stand. Waiting for that anonymous text message to accelerate their heartbeats. The thrill of the chase with the forbidden fruit is enough to blur the lines and the world around them.

The first problem? They both have girlfriends.

The worst problem? They’re stepbrothers.

MM Romance
Stepbrothers 🙄
1 Star ⭐️

I don’t know what to rate this book. It’s absolutely one of the worst I’ve ever read not just the plot but all of the twists and turns this had near the end. Holy shit, it was a train wreck of epic proportions and I thought I knew what to expect which is why I picked it up against my better judgement because who cares about a few MF sex scenes but this had a lot more in store for me than just MF sex scenes. A whole lot more! So, slapping a big 1 star on this should be easy right? Not exactly, because despite how bad this was I could not put it down even during the 476387 different plot twists that I saw coming a mile away and while I admit 40-60% did drag a bit and make me consider DNFing, I picked this shit back up and kept at it. Usually I’d at least 3 star this shit and put it in my guilty pleasures shelf but there are a few things I’m have trouble getting past.

1. ATTN: MF Romance authors. When it’s 2 men, using the phrase “back hole is unnecessary and totally cringy! This book used it both correctly and incorrectly. During one of the MFM scenes, Blaise’s inner monologue said he was lining his dick up to his ex girlfriend’s back hole! Congratulations 🥳 This is the correct usage as women have both a front and back hole. However, when Cole and Blaise are stuffing their dicks and fingers inside each other’s asses, “back hole does NOT need to be used because there is no front hole. It was used a whopping 10 times between the two of them and each time I wanted to die. I have only ever seen this in For The Love Of Kane and it was also cringy as all fuck. Please stop ✋

2. The random POV of Jackson halfway through the book. WHY? It literally did nothing for the book. Do you think your readers are idiots? Because it was so obvious he knew about Cole & Blaise and was planning something behind their back. We didn’t need his POV. This book was way too long at 438 pages and this could have been cut out. It added nothing and what did happen was so anti-climatic it hurt. Like Allie will prevent someone from doing anything? 🙄 Speaking of Allie, wtf was she doing near the end of this book? That was completely unnecessary 🙄

3. The repetitive and cringy sex scenes not just with the women but between the two boys as well. Now, some scenes were hot af not even going to lie but as time went on my enthusiasm waned. As much as I love primal play, we didn’t need more than 2 scenes at most especially when it turned into a super violent brawl every single time. The fact these two never had to go to the hospital after what they did to each other was mind blowing 🤯 The number of times they made the other bleed, cracked each other’s ribs, broke each other’s noses, and even drugged the other was too much! And they used hockey sticks and baseball bats to inflict maximum damage. Whenever I read “dark MM romance by authors who usually write MF romance, they have the men beat the absolute shit out of each other and while I like a good fighting to fucking scene this was straight up domestic violence. And here we have fucking Cole thinking that Blaise is his soulmate and the only one who ever truly loved him even more than his own mom‼️when he knew Blaise had drugged him and forced him to have sex with his girlfriend while he recorded them was just sad. Have some self respect FFS. Even in the epilogue these two are beating the absolute fuck out of each other. It never stopped.

Which brings me to 80%

4. At 80% this book went off the rails and it was so insane that it left me cackling and absolutely hysterical. I cried from laughing because what in the actual fuck? The entire book I knew that Cole’s bio dad, who is a corrupt drunk cop, was going to show up and cause havoc at some point. It was obvious. And he does. However, it was so OTT that I felt like someone was crossing off items on a bingo card like if you can fit all of this batshit crazy stuff in one scene, you’ll win a million dollars because WTAF. We have:
✅Cole getting shot
✅kԲ辱Բ
✅septic shock and infection from shooting
✅pistol whippings
✅torrential rain storm
✅car used as a deadly weapon
✅car crash against tree, wrapped around it
✅car bursts into flames described as an inferno
18 yr old Blaise somehow turns into the hulk with his super strength and drags Cole from the crash
✅shitty stepmom antics-leaving Blaise behind in torrential storm 🙄🙄
✅bio dad survives crash!
✅knock down drag out fight near flaming car
✅Blaise gets shot
✅click click…gun runs out of ammo
✅Blaise saves the day despite his broken nose, ribs, shot arm, and bloody body (don’t forget he was just fucked for the first time right before all this happened with only blood as lube after being hit in the head with a baseball bat) by rugby tackling bio dad into the flaming car and bio dad magically falls into the open passenger door and gets burned alive, while soaking wet. HOW the fuck did the passenger door get open? It was wrapped around the tree and Blaise had to kick the window out to get Cole and his mom out???
✅Blaise passes out to sirens and the smell of burning flesh. His words.

Next scene we are magically in the hospital

✅Cole & Blaise pull out their IVs and tubes to find the other in the hospital. WTAF how were they even walking? They are both royally fucked up. 🙄🙄🙄

Epilogue 5 years later & they’re married. Because of course they are. Cole got drafted for the NFL when this was never discussed anywhere in the book? I didn’t know he even cared about the NFL and how did he play well when he was beat the fuck up all the time?? AND I’m supposed to believe that after he got drafted these two did long distance for 2 years until Blaise graduated? HAHAHAHAH no fucking way. Blaise was wayyy too obsessive, possessive and jealous to survive that. Make it make sense. Homeboy woulda moved to wherever Cole was and gone to school there. Please stop 🛑

It was quite the choice to have each author write a different character. Sometimes it felt like the authors just slapped their various parts together without looking to see if their part made sense. It would be daytime in one POV and in the next one it was talking about the moonlight on their bodies but it was the same scene just a few minutes later. This is also why 80-92% (chapters 34-39) were so unintentionally hilarious because some of it felt out of place like the car colliding with the tree scene. Obviously one of the authors didn’t realize the other said the passenger doors were jammed and Cole and his mom had to be dragged through the window which is why bio dad’s epic fall into that side of the car made me laugh out loud.

And can I say what a shit person Cole’s mom was? Her taste in men sucked because Blaise’s dad wasn’t much better than his psycho bio dad especially the way he treated Cole the entire time and his reason for doing that was so dumb. The fact he thought that because Cole had his bio dad’s blood he would corrupt his own son?? WTF 🤦🏻‍♀ He was fucking 14 and the fact his mom rarely stood up for him? 🙄🙄🙄 Stop 🛑

And lastly, why in the hell did the authors feel like it was necessary to break the 4th wall in the epilogue and talk to me? 💀🤦🏻‍♀

All this fuckery and yet I feel like my one star rating is too harsh? WTAF. Also totally giving the side eye 👀 to anyone who 5 starred this? 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀 yet I completely understand at the same time 🤣🤣🤣🤣 & I’ll turn my highlights on. 😘

Thank you Megan for recommending this..filth? For the life of me, I couldn’t put it down and now I’m feeling all the guilt😩🫣 I chose this one out of the recs you gave because I never read anything that has the disgusting confusing words: back hole (word count: 12 times) So, if anyone likes dark toxic romances(?) read this depravity.

Before I get into the plot, I want to talk about THE DEDICATION page. When I read it, I was shaken to my fucking core, therefore one star🙂 check it out:

“To all the readers who dream of being chased through the woods and face-fucked by their masked stepbrother.

ACT ONE Two college jock step-brothers who hate but secretly desire each other go to a party with their Awful Tarty Girlfriends 1&2, everyone decides to wear masks and chase each other in the woods (fun game) Sociopath Angry Brother gets turned on holding a guy to the ground, turns out it’s his Psychopath Golden Brother so normally he decides to fuck his face, choke him with cum and punch him unconscious! PGB doesn’t know it’s SAB. Blackmail ensues (by SAB and also anonymously SAB) PGB drugs SAB and ATG1&2, changes masks with his brother and films him fucking his own ATG2, while he’s jealously fucking ATG1. Wow👏 Revenge UST and threats are made in every encounter, anonymous SAB calls out PGB to reveal his face, he doesn’t. Instead he gets him concussed, thrown into the pool and then it’s chasing time. PGB gets turned on, wants to get beaten then fucked, his wish comes true. dear god, make it stop🙏 more threats, UST and using their crazy cheating slutty ATG1&2 in retaliations after each encounter. PGB knows the masked man’s identity, but SAB doesn’t know he knows and now he’s jealous of himself °չ׮ how dare his brother send nudes to anonymous him!!! HE NEEDS TO BE KICKED BLOODY AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTED AGAIN! OH HE SAID MY NAME WHILE I JERKED HIM OFF! DOES HE KNOW? WOW HE’S EATING MY BACKHOLE, I AM IN LOVE NOW! WE BOTH CAME SO NOW HE HAS TO BE UNCONSCIOUS SO I CAN LEAVE! also, PGB sexually assaults his sleeping brother. I think this book will end with one of them RIP from all this..passion.

ACT TWO enters JackAss Omniscient Friend who got kick off the team and replaced by PGB so, HE ANGRY! The brothers are now different people after they broke up with ATG1&2 trying to work out a relationship, being cute, stuttery, bashful and loved up. Coming out to their friends and telling each other deep dark secrets (except what they did to each other in act one) JAOF who somehow knows everything and has proof, threatens PGB for replacing him with a gun and a beating, so crazy mofo retaliates with vandalizing his car, running after him to the tree he climbed on and setting it on fire. JAOF retaliates GUH ENOUGH😩 by telling SAB to look into PGB’s phone where he finds the video. A lot of shit happens and they make up by having sex in ATG2’s room, where it’s PGB’s first time bottoming WITH HIS BLOOD FOR LUBE!!!!!! oh he’s ecstatic with SAB losing his mind and getting rough, don’t worry.

ACT THREE they just finished fucking, all bruised and beaten up, when LITERALLY enters SAB’s drunken policeman ex-dad swinging a gun! Cue gunfire, kidnapping, sleuthing, fiery car crash, ”Any last words? Eat a dick and die.🙄 click, click, click. Nope, gun is empty🙄 author forgetting what she wrote two scenes ago, and now abusive dad is dead. AND THEN a movie moment where the lovers run into each other’s arms ONLY they’re bleeding and limping to death in a hospital corridor fighting away the nurses🤣🤣🤣🤣 PGB obviously has brain damage from all the foreplay, because now he’s arguing with his dick out loud.

EXODOS we actually got two. Yay. I was dying to know how they end up. Twice. Because I care. It’s five years later and they apparently tried long distance. for two whole years. authors do you expect me to believe your characters are capable of that? seriously?😒 oh, and they’re married. And doing another jealous chase/beating foreplay scene. AND OHMYGOD😱 WHY IS YOUR CHARACTER SPEAKING TO ME NOW? THAT FUCKING FREAKED ME THE FUCK OUT😱 and it’s twenty pages I’m never going to read!!!!!! I lied, I skimmed a few pages and exited after PGB started manically chasing his husband, trapping him in a net and asking his dick what to do now!!!!!!!! may they rest in peace🪦it’s obvious one fucked the other to death, I can’t be wrong!

WEIRD NONSENSICAL QUOTES: There were a bunch of metaphors that sneak up on you, none of them was good or appropriate. Please have some examples, in the first one PGB is actually on his back getting sucked by SAB and this is what he’s thinking, all poetic like.
“He drives his sword deep, and I fall to my knees on our battlefield, staring up at his blood-streaked face.

“I grind my hard dick against his ass—a crash wave colliding with the shore.

I devour this book so fast and I wish I would’ve cherished it longer. I swear I could read about these boys until the end of time. I loved this story so much. The enemies to lovers was fucking ENEMIES TO LOVERS-ING SO HARD. The push and pull was so electric to read. Harleigh and Leigh are both incredible authors and this duo was fucking UNMATCHED. Y’all have to do this again. This was perfection. The hate. The love. The primal. The angst. The anger. Fuck man this was so fucking incredible!!!

many thoughts

This book started so strong for me. I kept not wanting to put the book down …but then wanting to put it down to savour it…you know.

It made me scream, it made me anxious, it was hot …it made me MAD - quite possibly all the emotions you can think of. There are unlikeable characters. Cole is a precious baby and I love him and want to protect him at all costs.

The mum, dad, stepdad, Allie, Mia…they can all get in the BIN.

I did come to like Blaise in the end who quite frankly - was insane. 🤣👀

The middle section did feel a little long and I felt like maybe some bits were dragged out (but I enjoyed myself - kinda? Did I ?)

Were the plot points that were stupid ? Yes.
Did they make me want to rip my hair out? Also yes.
Is my hair still in tact ? Thankfully. And 88-90% genuinely made me do a “looks at the invisible camera across the room moment.

But overall, this was an …enjoyable read. Complete carnage from the start. If you like unhinged crazy jealous and morally black men you’ll enjoy the hell outta this. The plot kinda went a bit too jumpy for me.

P.s. I was waiting for a fire joke …you know COLE and BLAISE “he was the Cole that set my world ablaise (I KNOW IT IS NOT SPELT THAT WAY BUT U GET IT)

I wanted to love this book so bad.. I thought I was going to because it has my favorite themes. MM sign me up and Dark Romance it’s all I read so YES. But no it did not in fact chokehold me 😒

The book starts strong and I was excited, but then it falls flat and it’s exhausting and kinda boring. As I see in many comments, this book is very hit or missed, very love or hate. I’m unfortunately on the missed hate side. I guess I’m a hater .
I was only able to tolerate 50% and I DNF .
There is a very fine line to do the enemies to lovers Dark Romance well and this book missed completely. The girlfriends are what annoyed me the most. The fact that Cole is this big bad quarterback and still dating this serial cheater of a girl who’s mostly annoying as fuck. The other girlfriend, Blaise’s is also annoying but less than Allie. Still she’s than hang up on the other brother. Let me tell you this book is messy and the plot is non existent till 80% “according to everyone who finished and I have no patience for that, I have many other books I rather read

Too much graphic m/f sex scenes. I'm alright with them if they add something to an m/m romance book but 35% into the book and most of the sex scenes have been m/f and were completely unnecessary. Authors should stick to writing straight erotica if they are so desperate to write so much straight smut in a supposed gay book. Like the guys have had atleast 7-8 graphic sex scenes with women and it's only at 35%. I don't wanna read about them eating out their gfs in graphic detail in an mm romance..tight cunt wet pussy... bro I'm done i thought this was supposed to be an mm romance..wtf.

Is that what you want Blaise? To be f*cked to within an inch of your life and left ruined and covered in c*m?

A book by 2 of my favourite authors, I was so excited to start reading this and it did NOT disappoint. Boy, that escalated quickly! 🤯 I freaking LOVE the hate-love in this book. It's dark, twisted, depraved and spicy af. I'm so here for it. I'd say this book had me in a chokehold, but let's say it had me in a death grip instead. WHEW! 🥵

This book was hard to put down. Were I not interrupted, by life...rude...I would have finished it in one sitting. I liked the storyline, I liked the spice and I love how psycho the 2 MMC's are. The double gay/bi awakening was fun to read. The ending was a HEA, but we had to really get there tough some rough stuff. I loved it. I devoured this book, Harleigh and Leigh delivered a great, dark MM read and I'm excited for everyone to read it soon! It goes straight to my favourites list.

DNF @ 52%. I don’t normally rate books I DNF but I did not like this. The characters were flat and unrealistic. Disappointed because I usually like books by these authors. This was a poor portrayal of MM romance. This read as a MM romance written for straight women to sexualize gay men…bad vibes.

2.5

High chemistry, with a very missed up plot line and Incomprehensible characters. I read many books that been written by two authors, but it's the first time I really feel it because the book was very messy and unorganized. I wanted to love it so bad, but at the end I had many objections even after enjoying almost half of the book.

The ache in my chest burns brighter. “You need a villain. I meet his eyes, letting him see what lurks beneath my own surface. “I fear being the hero.

Sex right at the start. Then a lot more sex. No buildup, no foreplay. No chemistry. Dry as the Sahara. I needed to know who the main characters first to be able to buy the mindfuckery, but the all the sex and games left little space for deeper characterization. What do you call a dark romance with flat characters? Boring, that's what. If you're not horny before reading, you likely won't be.

I read Forbidden by Alessandra Hazard a few hours prior, and this doesn't hold a candle to how hot that story was.

Kind of slapped—just like Cole’s dad. 😭 (Don’t come at me.) In all seriousness, as someone who knows a lot about child abuse, the chapter where Cole was crashing out and was talking about how people knew about the abuse but didn’t do anything about it was so true, especially with his dad being a cop. I felt bad for him. Not all cops are bad, but we do need to do a better job of making sure cops don’t get to abuse their power, especially if they are like Cole’s dad. Lots of love with them, man—love how one second they are full-on smashing each other, and the next second they are doing the same thing but with a different context. 🤠 Lol, loved the violence though.

I really liked this story, but the main thing that kept this from 5 stars for me was it's way too long, which made the author repeat a lot of the same things. You can't only break up/make up so many times before I write you off.

"You need a villain." I meet his eyes, letting him see what lurks beneath my own surface. "I fear being the hero."

Cole (20) hates his stepbrother, Blaise (18). Not only does Blaise's father treat him like shit, but his own mother allows him to do it. They aren't able to completely separate their lives because their two girlfriends are BFFs, so they often end up at the same parties. Usually, at the end of the night, they end up fighting each other - but during one party, Cole shoves is "hate" down Blaise's throat. Thing is - Cole is wearing a mask so Blaise doesn't know it's him. From there - things heat up quickly. In the end, their true feelings come out and they get a HEA.

Sex: Keep in mind, my opinion of this is as a CIS female, so I have no idea if this is an accurate representation of M/M sex. That said - it was super fucking hot. I was soooo here for these two getting it on. I just want to go back and read the sex scenes again.

Girlfriends: Both guys have girlfriends for part of this book. At least in one of the relationships, the girl had genuine feelings for the guy. The other couple were just a couple out of convenience. It's cheating - but I honestly didn't care. Lots of people have straight relationships before they realize their sexuality.

Dark & Triggers: There's a of hate fucking in this. They physically fight each other all the time, there's knife play and blood play. It's not a romance. At one point, one of the guys drugs the other and gets him to have sex with his girlfriend. Also - somno and it was hot.

I did like it though - I recommend it if you can tolerate the violent sex and the fact that the same insecurities and misunderstandings keep repeating throughout.

Okay, all you dark MM readers, have you read Chokehold yet? If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? Because it’s a must-read, and you’re missing out. Imagine being chased in the woods by masked men, having an incredible sexual encounter, and later finding out the masked man is your stepbrother.

Here is what to expect

Dark MM
Stepbrothers
Enemies to lovers
Secret Identity
Masked Men
Primal
Forced Proximity
Possessive MMC
So many kinks and more

I’m just going to put it out there, and if you don’t like it, oh well. It’s just not for you, so don’t read it. Depending on how it is written, I personally love it when the MMC cheats—not on each other but with each other, especially when it’s MM. I was not disappointed.

Both Cole and Blaise can’t stand each other and get under each other's skin. One hides his social and devilish ways better than the other. The toxicity and angst between the two are on a different level. It’s extremely intense.

Harleigh Beck and Leigh Rivers together create a rollercoaster of a journey. One, I repeatedly got whiplash and never wanted to get off the ride.

The way this book had me in a chokehold from begging to end! I have only read a few MM Romances and this is the most depraved one I have read. This was also my first read where each author focused on a character, which made it unique to me; Their writing balanced each other perfectly Cole and Blaise were toxic for each other but in a green flag way, since their first encounter Cole had nothing but hatred in his heart for his new stepbrother until the night of the chase. Once the secrets started to come out, i was on the edge of my seat, everything was playing out in my head like a movie. I loved how the characters developed as the story continued, they both connected on an emotional level neither one of them knew they could ever possess. There were so many jaw dropping moments but by far the craziest ones were the pool and shower scene; I felt the urge to bathe myself in holy water because why was it so hot hahaha! I screamed, laughed, cried and absolutely fell in love with Cole and Blaise. They’re both insane but have such a deep love for eachother, no one else could ever compare.

I really wanted to like this. I so did, it was one of my most anticipated reads but it just 😭😭😭😭😭 It just, wasn’t hitting. I’m sorry. I wanted cole to be mean, controlling, and ig he kinda was at the beginning for the chase but then it was like that got flipped around and instead blaise had that personality.

also, it was not realistic. i’m so sorry. how many times did these characters almost die? it was crazy. i swear to god blaise kept saying ohhh i need to go to hospital but never did. bitch how are u walking and fighting and LIVING whilst blood is gushing out of you? i didn’t get it.

was so excited for this one but unfortunately it wasn’t what i expected

I can’t. I DNF @ 53% because this is honestly a train wreck.

Did the authors spoke with each other when writing the chapters? Because the inconsistency was a dealbreaker for me. We have Blaise during the day, and in the next POV with Cole, five minutes later, it’s already night. The whole train railing scene with Jackson and Blaise got me so confused because the next page, Cole was following Blaise outside the house but he had already received the messages from Jackson? What is going on here?

And let’s talk about the characters personalities and motivations. It was all over the place, I couldn’t for the lives of me understand what was going on, when this book is in 1st person pov. At the beginning of the book, Blaise is said to be this cold blood sociopath that uses people and doesn’t feel a thing, only Cole can get him to feel something. BUT THIS DUDE IS TOTALLY EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE IN THE WHOLE FREAKING BOOK??!! What kind of sociopath is this?!? Listen, what cold blood sociopath would search Jackson in the middle of the night to ask him if he was ever in love?!? Again, it’s the inconsistency that makes this book bad. Just really bad.

Don’t even get me started with all the assault and violence. I was surprised they never got to the hospital after GETTING HIT IN THE HEAD BY A HOCKEY STICK!

I felt my intelligence was being played with.

I’m sorry, I didn’t like this. At all.
