Junji It¨ (Japanese: ÒÁÌÙÈó¶þ, Ito Junji) is a Japanese cartoonist and illustrator, best known for his horror manga.
Ito was born in Gifu Prefecture, Japan in 1963. He was inspired to make art from a young age by his older sister's drawing and Kazuo Umezu's horror comics. Until the early 1990s he worked as a dental technician, while making comics as a side job. By the time he turned into a full time mangaka, Ito was already an acclaimed horror artists.
His comics are celebrated for their finely depicted body horrors, while also retaining some elements of psychological horror and erotism.
Although he mostly produces short stories, Ito is best known for his longer comic series: Tomie (1987-2000), about a beautiful high school girl who inspires her admirers to commit atrocities; Uzumaki (1998-1999), set in a town cursed with spiral patterns; Gyo (2001-2002), featuring a horde of metal-legged undead fishes. Tomie and Uzumaki in particular have been adapted multiple times in live-action and animation.

junji ito is a writer/illustrator known for his horror manga, and here he focuses his energies on the most horrible horror of them all - the domestic cat.

this is a comedic-horror manga, and it speaks to those of us who have invited these little devils into our hearts and homes, and the everyday horrors we endure as a result.

and

and

it is an autobiographical tale of what happens to a dog-person when his fianc¨¦e brings her two cats into their home

and his emotional journey from fear

and suspicion

and more fear

to eventually accepting their presence in his life to the extent that he is jealous of their relationship with his wife.

and even makes clumsy attempts to play with them and win them over to him, as we all do

until he ultimately succumbs to that monstrous, obsessive love that felines inspire in us

incidentally, it's uncool of him to refer to this cat's face as "weird" or "accursed,"

(actual photo of "weird, accursed" cat - awww!)

when this is how he draws his wife:

in one of the Q&A sections of this book, a reader addresses this:

Q: You draw A-ko's eyes almost entirely without pupils. What does your wife think of this?

A: She got mad at me. It seems that she doesn't like the haircut, either. I've also been instructed to remove unnecessary lines from her cheeks in a number of panels. Additionally, she pointed out that A-ko's trademark striped pants are nowhere to be found in her personal wardrobe. Aside from these minor issues, my wife does not seem particularly displeased with this manga.

and i guess there are a few things about this cat that are weird¡

i really enjoyed this book, especially as it addresses some of the finer points of cat-living, such as experiencing their stubborn, preternatural strength

the disruption they bring into our homes

and all the gross

and spooky

things we tolerate in order to occasionally be shown affection by them.

yup, she's just radiating affection here.

it's a pretty adorable, and very accurate account of the monsters that inhabit those little scraps of fur we spend all day feeding and catering to.

unless i'm just projecting here.

Cat lovers and spooky season lovers unite: Junji Ito¡¯s Cat Diary is a fiendishly fun tale as the manga horror master explores the terrors of *checks notes* cat ownership.

The frights of feline zoomies, the chills of a fist-full of cat shit (or is it cat vomit???), the shrieks of hunger, the horror of an open window and an absentee cat¡Junji Ito glorious combines his horror with humor and a deep humanity of pet responsibility in this wildly wonderful little manga that is sure to sink its fangs right into the hand that feeds¡

Based on his own experiences, Cat Diary follows Ito, not a cat person, adjusting to his wife¡¯s cat Yon. But when Yon seems lonely, his wife makes the decision to bring in a second cat, Mu, much to his horror. Finding their faces and markings unsettling, he decides they must be cursed and so begins an uproarious tale of feline misadventures that is a joy to read. We also get to see photos of the real life Yon and Mu:

I love how while not really being horror in the sense of his other works, he still draws each scene as if it were. I really enjoy how his and his wife¡¯s faces are horror caricatures at all times, with frighteningly large mouths full of gnashing teeth and demonic expressions that are super unflattering in the best way.

Traumatized by the cats weirdness but eventually won over by them, this is such a charming little book. I appreciate the small Q&A with the author at the end where he displays such a warm personality in contrast to the cool darkness of his works that make me love him even more. He admits to being ¡®a scaredy cat¡¯ of everything in real life, discusses a bit on how his work does contain traces of influence from American horror that were popular in Japan in his youth while also discussing the cultural difference between US and Japanese horror. When asked about advice to other artists he says he finds that to ¡®create a new, unknown kind of fear,¡¯ is quite ¡®an effective motivation.¡¯ A fun little romp of horror and humor, Cat Diary is a chilling good time.

¡°A curse is upon my household!¡±
-Junji Ito¡¯s reaction upon seeing his fianc¨¦e¡¯s cat

This is an oddity. It¡¯s a manga that I really liked, but feel I can¡¯t recommend it to many. It requires a love of cats, silly slice of life moments and a knowledge of Ito¡¯s prior works. You see Ito is a Horror Artist, and I use capital letters there because he takes it a step beyond what most can pull off. His drawings are horrific and often grotesque. He is not the sort of manga creator I can recommend to most of my friends, as I genuinely think his work often goes a step beyond uncomfortable (though if you do like horror, check him out. His art is the stuff of nightmares).

Here though he¡¯s telling simple and comedic moments about his own life with his fianc¨¦e and her two cats¡ but he¡¯s a horror artist through and through, so how does he tell this tale? As if the cats are monsters invading his life. He frequently will draw them ominously staring at him, he will draw distorted faces in horror (and his fianc¨¦e is almost always drawn with just blank white eyes). Despite the imagery (and maybe even because of it) the comedy works even better as these monstrous creatures slowly win over his dog loving heart.

Much of the humor comes from ominous set ups, actions that in his other comics would lead to gruesome murders or hauntings instead pay off with a joke. Visuals that could be alarming in other works are played for comedy (for example an extended mouth with over large teeth moving towards a cat and a panel saying ¡°I¡¯m going to gobble you up¡± then the next frame showing kissing/cuddling the cat).
I feel that without prior knowledge of his works, this will come off as just a bizarre little book and many won¡¯t get the joke. That said, people who are into his sort of horror might not like that when all is said and done, he just wrote a cute little book about his cats.

4/5 stars and a recommendation to those limited few who find the idea of a horror artist doing a cute comedy ridiculously amusing.

I'm consistently intrigued by Junji Ito as a human being. His work as a horror mangaka is outstanding to say the least. But this man's brain is some Stephen King level shit.

This work showcases that perfectly. While he contains nightmarish depths, this displays how undeniably human he is.

His wife wants a cat. Junji panics over not wanting one, while simultaneously appeasing his wife and saying 'of course'. They get the cat. His wife says that the cat is lonely and surely needs another cat. Junji has another mental spiral. But when both cats arrive, he swiftly descends into a breakdown because the cats don't love him as much as he discovers he loves them. Thus ensues a long journey of a man trying desperately to make two moody cats adore him while also upholding the facade of not caring if they do or don't.

So many male cat owners have to relate to this on a cosmic level.

It's bizarre but completely realistic. I've never been a cat owner. Unfortunately, I'm highly allergic. But based on the experiences of my friends, this is accurate to their cat-owner-history.

I found myself smiling or laughing more than I was wincing and cringing at the horror or scare tactics. That's a good sign to me. It shows depth and a compassion that makes you more invested in the characters and storyline.

What I'll say is that, personally, there was a LOT of interviews with Junji Ito rather than manga panels. I didn't understand why that was necessary. A few quotes here or there would have sufficed.

Also, it was very short. Maybe that was exacerbated by how much of the volume was taken up by interviews, but it still felt too small to be a complete story.

I have been successfully creeped out by horror manga-ka Ito's Uzumaki (a town driven to madness by spirals) and Museum of Terror (boys driven to madness and murder by a girl/femme fatale), so I just added this to my tbr list, and was surprised to find it is basically diary comics, the funny story of how dog person Ito got pushed into living with two cats by his wife.

But how can a horror artist tell the story of two cats coming to live in his house? As if the cats were monsters, of course, out to destroy him, and so on. It's pretty adorable stuff, facetious and tongue-in-cheek and all. He does it to look like a horror comic, as if this is how he can't help but see the world, but in fact he falls in love with kitties, aw. Ito becomes a cat person! Not such a creepy scary guy, after all.

If you like cats and Ito, this is for you. Includes two pages of cat photographs of the real life cats, if you haven't already seen enough cat pictures from your friends on Facebook. And a bonus comic about one of the cats written by his wife and drawn by him. I don't like it as much as the truly masterful horror stuff he does, but it's kinda cute, pretty funny.

Here: Read some of it online for yourself:

It's amazing how Junji Ito can take a rather mundane book about his new family getting two cats and turn it into horror. Cats really are odd creatures and Ito uses that to his advantage taking these normal scenes and putting a horror spin on them.

As a Junji Ito stan I could not help but really enjoy this manga! It was such a fun combination of Ito's horror style, but without the actual horror. His facial expressions juxtaposed with the story lines were super funny in my opinion. Also Yon looks super scary -- but also, I love him (and Mu)

Wonderful, deadpan humour pervades Junji Ito¡¯s tongue-in-cheek, autobiographical manga based on a reluctant conversion from dog person to cat person. Ito is considered a master of horror, celebrated for his brooding, often violent manga. Here he deploys his trademark style, with intricate, black-and-white artwork, to compose an account of everyday life with two cats. J-kun (Ito) and his fianc¨¦ A-ko (Ito¡¯s later wife Ayako Ishiguro) have just moved in together, their new house is pristine and sparkling. But this perfectly-ordered world is about to be shattered by the arrival of not one, but two cats. First there¡¯s Mu a kitten who seems harmless enough, perhaps even cute, but then Mu is joined by A-ko¡¯s full-grown cat Yon. J-kun is instantly terrified by Yon¡¯s ¡®accursed face¡¯ and evil glare, fascinated by the possible significance of the sinister, skull-like markings on Yon¡¯s back. But slowly the cats start to exert their charm on J-kun who becomes obsessed with winning them over - bombarding them with tasty treats, taunting them with fluffy, cat wands - determined to rank first in their affections. Ito¡¯s chosen style is central to the hilarity of his stories: J-kun¡¯s bulging, bloodshot eyes; A-ko¡¯s pupil-less ones that make her seems more zombie than human. The manga evolves into a series of vignettes charting the relationship between J-kun, Mu and Yon, interspersed with picture galleries of their real-life counterparts, as well as brief Q&A interviews centred on Ito¡¯s life and work. But cat lovers should be warned there is a bittersweet sting here, as Ito¡¯s story extends to Yon¡¯s final days.

Knowing it to be Junji Ito's work, one would expect something like this:
description

But it's nothing like that, relax! (or get upset, it depends) At its worst it's more like this:
description

This story is about cat loving, it's about becoming a cat person - a true one, believe me, and about how these little furry assholes change everything when they arrive in our lives. It's adorable to say the least. It's very funny and it's actually authentic, because you will also get a bonus gallery of Ito's real life cats, who look exactly like Yon and Muu.

And as you can see, in real life Ito is a fun loving and nice guy...

Junji Ito is a horror manga artist known best for exceptionally creative and terrifying works such as Uzumaki and Tomie. I've read almost everything of his that has been released in America (still waiting for my bf to finish one anthology so he can lend it to me). His works are creepy, disturbing, spectacularly drawn, and always something I have never seen before. This book is no exception, just that it is also very funny.

It's the true enough story of what happened when his fiance moved into his house and brought two cats with her. Ito had never considered himself a cat person before and found her first cat to have a bad vibe about him. But he soon finds himself lured in by the cuteness and wants the cat to love him as much as it does his wife. He bounces between being afraid of the cat and having an uncontrollable urge to smother it with affection.

Of course the cat needs a friend so they get a second cat and Ito does not think it has an accursed face and wants to love it more than the first one. The cats scratch things, make messes, bite, make him feel unworthy, all the things that cats do and he's documented it here for our absolute enjoyment. This cat diary is drawn in his typical horror style and has similar pacing to a horror manga but it laugh out loud hilarious. For anyone who's ever owned a cat all of this will strike true. It's a nice quick read and I strongly recommend it for cat lovers and haters alike.

Junji Ito makes gleeful use of his superior horror aesthetics to create a charming love letter to the cats his wife forced into his life. While not the mind-melting masterwork that is Uzumaki (trans: Spiral), this comic book is slim enough to stuff a Christmas stocking and quirky enough to delight the feline fetishist nearest and dearest to your heart this holiday season.

This was such a wholesome, refreshing manga. I was in it for the horror (I was betrayed, yes.) but, I never expected to read something like this from the horror manga king. I love this one so much! Thank you for sharing your cat diary, Junji Ito! Also, I'm going to call you J-kun from now on!

as a cat owner myself, i knew i had to pick this one up!

? i¡¯ve had such a great time reading this. i could relate SO much about my cat loving my boyfriend more than me and it happened in this book¡ªthe cats preferred a-ko over mmc.
? yon¡¯s face and back skull pattern did creep me out sometimes lol i was definitely waiting for the time when he did something freaky.
? i didn¡¯t understand j-kun¡¯s proper obsession over wanting the cats to love him and go so far as to grab one of them too, he came across a bit weird in that way lol.
? if you have cats, i still recommend reading this, it¡¯s such a short book too if you wanna bump up your book count for 2024 challenge!
