Meet Grimpy! He鈥檚 a dumbo octopus, and he鈥檚 taking us on a tour of the whole cephalopod class鈥攗nderwater creatures such as cuttlefish, nautiluses, octopuses, and squids.
Grimpy knows all about what makes these many-armed marvels so special, like how the coconut octopus uses tools or the cuttlefish talks with color! It seems like every creature has a special ability鈥攅xcept him. When Grimpy gets stuck on everything a dumbo octopus 肠补苍鈥檛 do, the other cephalopods show him why it鈥檚 great to be a dumbo.

This is a fantastic informational graphic novel. Grimpy, a dumbo octopus guides you through the different types of cephalopods and their unique characteristics. The writing is informative and fun. The art is detailed and engaging. It was a quick educational read, I can see kids being drawn in by the playful explanations. I鈥檓 grateful for Lerner Publishing Group and NetGalley for sending me a digital ARC. I 肠补苍鈥檛 wait to share this with my kids.
Everyone knows how much I love octopuses! I think they are the most fascinating animal on the earth, And I LOVE how science evolves, we learn more and more about how incredibly smart and complicated they are! When I saw this title, I know I needed it in my life. Poor little Grimpy, the dumbo octopus narrator of this graphic novel, travels closer to the surface to explore the world of cephalopods, but as he does, he doesn't know what makes himself special. It takes a team for him to realize that he's just as mysterious and complicated as all the cephalods that he showcases.
What I learned: octopuses do not have tentacles, they have arms. Tentacles have the suckers on the end on a club and arms have them all the way up. I've been wrong this whole time! Some squids can adjust their colors so one side is one color like red and the other side is white! Cuttlefish are super complicated and can shift into 75 color combos. The blanket octopus has the biggest size difference between male and female in the animal kingdom.
This graphic novel made me happy. If you love octopuses and just a happy, educational read... this is for you!
Super cute illustrated guide to various types of Cephalopods.
The illustrations are a adorable, a bit simplistic, but it works. There is a bit of humor, which at times I found a bit unoriginal as it doesn't entirely add to the guide. I suppose it's there for levity, but since there isn't really and plot of many characters, I found it more distracting. The one character there is is the narrator Dumbo octopus, but I also wasn't the biggest fan of the "story" that comes up towards the end, of the little Dumbo being sad it doesn't have anything special like all the other cephalopods. Again, I didn't think that added much - there was too little of a story for that to really feel charming. Instead, integrating more plot, or other characters could have made it work, or to leave it out entirely.
The cephalopod facts were cool and interesting, though I almost wanted more. However, the way it is is definitely also child friendly, as this is also a children's book.
The one flaw I found, my personal problems with the "story" aside, was that at one point 1 foot gets labelled as 30cm, and at another point as 30.5cm. I appreciated that all measures were given in two units (cm vs foot, miles vs meters), but I hope these inconsistencies will be fixed in the final version.
I received an ARC and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This book is very educational and would be a great addition to any grade levels library or classroom. It's super informative on the subject of cephalopods. I personally didn't even know about the animal group. I was extremely impressed with the information that was provided in this book. The graphics and visuals are eye catching and will keep the attention of any child of any age when they are trying to learn about cephalopods. I would highly recommend this book to any child in my life once they are of the age to understand and read this book. I would even consider buying a copy for my goddaughter when it's published.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a fascinating book. Ann's illustrations always provide so much visual entertainment. Kids will love all the sea creatures, and how Grimpy the Dumbo Octopus shows the reader around his underwater world and introduces the reader to all the fun sea creatures and different cephalopods swimming by.
Readers will meet cuttlefish, nautiluses, octopuses, and squids. Each has different maneuvers they use to escape danger. I learned so much from reading this seventy-two-page graphic novel since Grimpy told me about what makes these many armed marvels unique. Did you know a female blanket fish has a beautiful rainbow cape? She can wave it around like a matador fighting a bull and detach it if she needs to escape being eaten. I didn't even know there were blanket fish. Did you know an Octopus has nine brains? Or that there are Vampire Sqid? I love learning new things, as will children who read this book. They will laugh so hard that they will not even realize they are learning new things.听
I love how heartwarming it is when Grimpy thinks that everyone is so much better than him and that he doesn't have anything special and cries. What wonderful friends. They set out to figure out what makes him unique. It made me sigh as I read about how his friends wanted to find things to bring back Grimpy's smile. They all put their nine brains together to discover some cool facts about Dumbo Octopuses. Besides having nine brains, all octopuses have three hearts, so Grimpy has that, but out of all of the other octopuses, he can live in the deepest ocean water. Almost four and a half miles down deep. That is over twice as deep as his other friends can travel.
Teachers and parents will love this book, too. The detailed diagrams at the end of the book showing the creatures' body parts in the story are especially fun, and teachers will want to use them in class with their students.
The underwater world of cephalopods comes to life with lots to learn, while an adorable character has his own, little adventure to experience along the way.
This book is all about cephalopods, which is much more exciting than a reader might first think. It begins with Grimpy, a cute dumbo octopus, who leaves his darker depths of the ocean to take the reader on a swim, while introducing all sorts of cephalopods along the way. Each one is interesting, and this comes across with excitement as Grimpy happily tells the reader about each and every one. Until he realizes that he's not sure what his special talent is.
This is a cute read and written with the younger end of the middle grade audience in mind. Even stronger chapter book readers will have no problem diving into this read. The adorable dumbo octopus insures a light and enjoyable read. He's cheerful, friendly, and always enthusiastic about each cephalopod he introduces. It's contagious, especially since the variety of creatures is vast. Some change color, others squish through the tiniest space, while others can speed through the water with sudden bursts. I learned more than a few things along the way and was surprised how interesting these creatures are.
Grimpy speaks directly to the reader with a fun tone. The creatures are easy to identify and their specialties are well-illustrated. This is never dry even in the illustrations but lets the life of the ocean come across with energy. While some facts might be familiar, quite a few are eye-opening. And it's easy to understand and sympathize with Grimpy as he notices that none of these talents seem to apply to him. But he has his own surprise for the reader at the end.
It's a great way to introduce readers to sea life, while showing them how exciting it can be. I'm looking forward to seeing where the next books in this series lead.
Deep sea creature graphic novels seems like a bit of a niche but I'm delightfully surprised by another wonderful option! After reading Science Comics: Deep-Sea Creatures my son (6) and I were looking for another great graphic novel that would be, as the authors of Deep-Sea Creatures puts it, edutainment: education and entertainment in one. This is exactly what this book offers too! I'm a Dumbo Octopus! doesn't just teach you about dumbo octopuses, as the title might suggest, but rather teaches you about many cephalopods (a word I've learned from these incredible titles). The dumbo octopus acts as the narrator/tour guide, telling us all about other cephalopods and all of the cool things about them. As it goes on, the dumbo octopus gets discouraged: He doesn't have any of the cool things the other cephalopods do. He finally has his meltdown, bemoaning that he's just not as great as the others, when the other cephalopods join him and reassure him. In fact, they tell him that they so appreciated how he highlighted all of their cool features that they'll do the same for him and help him see how wonderful he is. If you have a kiddo who loves learning, especially about ocean life, this is a MUST BUY. If you have graphic novel lovers (don't we all?) then this is a good add to your collection. I'd recommend for kids K-4 and any public or elementary school library or classroom. Highly recommend! Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC!
This is a great graphic novel about the Dumbo octopus. One thing I want to mention is the use of octopuses. I was going to give a point off due to the perceived use of octopuses, but come to find out octopi is not used anymore as it is not the English preferred use of octopuses. I just learned that today and is a useful bit of information. I love the graphic pictures and the information was fun and playful. I never realize how many cephalopods there were and how they differ in appearance. Grimpy is the narrator of this story and he is looking for what makes him special amongst all his friends, who are also like him. Saddened that he does not have special features, his friends remind him what makes him even more special. He doesn鈥檛 have to hide, or change colors or curl up into spiky balls so predators don鈥檛 get him. He live and can survive in the deepest part of the ocean. The informative nature of the book is wonderful. It doesn鈥檛 dumb down information, but is reader friendly for all ages. The illustrations are fun and sweet at the same time I, personally, have learned so many new things and 肠补苍鈥檛 wait to share with my speech students, especially those that like water creatures. I think I will have them make their own cephalopod and share its story with the classmates.
Right off the bat, I will say that this book is utterly bursting with educational value. The author packs so much into such a simple book, without the overall book being too overwhelming. This allows readers to absorb all of the information that the author is including, which is amazing. It's amazing because all of the information in this book is so fascinating, and I even learned a few things! I have no doubt that young readers will adore cephalopds and learning about them after reading this book. Even further, the format of this book (graphic novel/comic) makes it even more engaging and fun. All of the cephalopods are so adorable and colorful, I love it! Lastly, the tone of this book changed and progressed often, which allowed this informational book to also be meaningful and full-bodied. What I mean by this is the dumbo octopus seemingly has no special traits like the other cephalopods, but friends come together to show that everyone is special in their own unique way. Put simply, this book has a lot of layers that work nicely together, like a parfait. Bravo!
The graphic novel format and adorable Dumbo octopus on the cover is sure to draw readers in. Then when the reading begins, that adorable octopus is going to fill their minds with all sorts of interesting facts about cephalopods-octopuses, squids, nautiluses and cuttlefish. Dumbo presents amazing adaptations such as changing color to scare predators and using other colors to attract a mate, the ability for some octopuses to squeeze through tiny holes despite their obvious girth and so much more, all the while admitting that he 肠补苍鈥檛 do any of those things. By the end, the poor fellow is feeling pretty down on himself until a fellow octopus launches into some pretty interesting tidbits about the deep ocean-living dumbo.
Illustrations are excellent, facts are presented in an entertaining way and back matter includes a highly illustrated glossary, bibliography and additional resources on the topic of cephalopods. Recommended for libraries with high circulation in non-fiction graphic novels for grades 2-4.
Thanks for the print ARC, Lerner Books/Graphic Universe.
This was a very cute and fun look at different kinds of octopi and various facts about them. It's great for children of all ages, including those like me iny theories but still able to enjoy new facts in a kid friendly way. It's like taking vitamins as gummies!
I for one did not know that tentacles were different from the arms octopi have (yes, technically, octopi don't have tentacles despite every calling their limbs that! Misinformation spreads once again!)
Or that there was an octopus species named for Dumbo the elephant.
The cartoon style delivers equally on humorous beats and helpful diagrams, sometimes both at the same time!
This book also has a cute message of "everybody is special and unique in their own way" by highlighting how the octopi are suited for their environments.
This book is everything I look for to buy in kids books. I may be a bit biased however, as I'm naturally drawn to anything oceanic in nature. First I will say, I LOVE the color scheme used in I'm Dumbo Octopus! It is very calming and pleasing to the eye. My youngest kiddo is 8 and he really enjoys nonfiction books as well as graphic novel style. When I showed him this he thought it was "awesome!" We both enjoyed learning all about the different types of cephalopods and I even learned about some I didn't know. He feels super smart that he can use the word cephalopod! I appreciate that the language is not dumbed down and still provides a bit of a challenge. This is a wonderful little book and I cannot wait to purchase it for friend's kids and school libraries!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to have my son and I to read an early copy of I'm a Dumbo Octopus!
I love a nonfiction book hosted by an adorable creature, and Grimpy definitely fits the bill. I like the level of information for this age group, not too complicated but not talking down to the reader either. While octopuses have been well covered recently, the addition of other cephalopods makes this a good addition to my non-fiction section. The comic layouts can be a tad confusing, particularly when a plot is happening behind Grimpy like the squid and octopus squabbling as pirates. There are too many things going on on the page to easily track who is speaking to whom. The more realistic layouts, whole pages of sea creatures laid out across the sea floor, are very attractive. Giving Grimpy a bit of story, searching for something special about himself is a good touch as well.
Full disclosure, since I first learned of the lesser-known Cuttlefish as an adult, I鈥檝e always enjoyed when they are included in a book. Even with this slight bias, I鈥檒l admit this books does an excellent job of explaining all types of Cephalopods, including Cuttlefish, Squids, Octopuses and Nautiluses. The graphic novel format worked really well for the content and the illustrations were detailed and well-done. My 6 year old loved the entire story which also prompted questions and discussion. Recommended for ages 5-9. This book would be an excellent addition to a library, classroom or home.
Thank you to NetGalley, Anne Lambelet and Graphic Universe for the DRC.
Thank you to Lerner Publishing, Graphic Universe and NetGalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This graphic nonfiction book explores the cephalopod family which includes squid, nautilus, cuttlefish, and octopus. It is narrated by Grimpy the Dumbo Octopus. There are a lot of facts in this short book, many of which I was unaware, like the Dumbo octopus lives 4 陆 miles deep in the ocean. Did you know that octopuses have arms, not tentacles? The information is presented in a very approachable and colorful manner. I would recommend this for grades 3 and up.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as a biology enthusiast. It skillfully combined informative content with a lighthearted narrative, making it both entertaining and educational. The storyline, which revolved around a Dumbo octopus struggling with feelings of inadequacy, was relatable and heartwarming. I appreciated how the author wove together fun facts about squid biology with meaningful discussions about self-acceptance. I eagerly await the author's next publication, as I found this book to be a truly engaging read. Thank you to Lerner Publishing, Graphic Universe and NetGalley for this e-ARC. All opinions are my own.
I鈥橫 A DUMBO OCTOPUS! by Anne Lambelet is a fun, fact-filled tour of the world of cephalopods. Led by Grimpy the dumbo octopus, readers are introduced to a variety of cephalopods including squids, octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses. While highlighting what makes each of these creatures special, Grimpy laments that he鈥檚 not anywhere near as special as the others around him. The rest of the cephalopods jump in to point out that he鈥檚 just as amazing as the rest of the crew. The graphic novel format makes the information engaging and easily accessible for elementary readers. Nonfiction fans will be excited to dive into this one!
So fun! What a great graphic novel to get kids interested in Cephalopods! And there is no cuter spokesperson than the incredible Dumbo Octopus. Hats off to Anne Lambelet, who's got a real winner of a book here. She's gone deeper (pun intended) than just a catalog of cool octopuses and cuttlefish; the story hinges on a concern this Dumbo Octopus has -- and it gets resolved in a way that gives kids yet MORE information about cephalopods. And how wonderful to make this a graphic novel instead of a picture book, getting younger readers wild about science while enjoying amazing facts and great humor.
Fantastic illustrations and packed with information about some well known, and normal sea creatures. Who knew cephalopods would make for such entertaining reading! I appreciate the author did not try to oversimplify the content for the younger audience. The one suggestion I would make, is a pronunciation guide with the index content at the end. Or, if using this with younger readers, consider pairing the audio book with the ebook or physical book. I've already shared the info with our school media specialist to purchase a couple copies for our library. I know our 3rd & 4th graders will enjoy this.
This book is so cute. The illustrations and coloring were done really well. Even on pages with a lot going on, the artwork is clear and not overwhelming. I definitely learned some cephalopod facts. I think the only thing I might have changed would be to list kingdom on top down to genus instead of the other way around. Parents will probably have to help their kids with pronouncing some of the big words, but I think this would be a good book for any child interested in ocean creatures.
I'm a Dumbo Octopus! is a very informative book, introducing the reader to many facts about the many different types of cephalopods (octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, and nautiluses), such as how they deal with predators, mating, and much more! Before reading this, I had no idea what the difference between tentacles and arms were! This book is very entertaining and a must have for any with a love of the deep sea! I think younger readers will especially like the storyline of the main character, Grimpy, who searches for what makes them unique.
My kids (and I!) thoroughly enjoyed this book. Formatted like a graphic novel, the book is narrated by the *cutest* dumbo octopus, Grimpy. Kids learn about different cephalopods in a really interactive and engaging way. Along the way, Grimpy learns that while he may not have some of the flashy, cool traits of other cephalopods, he is perfectly suited to his own environment and exactly how he is meant to be. I highly recommend this book for kids and families.
Thank you to Lerner Publishing Group for gifting my family with an ARC to review. All opinions are my own.
The CUTEST nonfiction graphic I've read in a while! Grimpy the dumbo octopus gives a tour of all the things that make cephalopods special. 9 brains, blue blood, chromatophores, list list goes on and on!
The illustrations in this one are fabulously cutesy while the dialog is both informational and engaging. A must-buy for elementary libraries!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
This is a fun kid's book that not only has an interesting story with the main little character but is also very educational as the book teaches you about all the different types of Octopus in the ocean even our main little character who does not see how unique they are told all the other Octopus join together to tell them about themselves. Great book for kids or even adults who want to learn more about all the different octopus in the world!
This was such a cool book! This was equal parts cute kids book and cephalopod information gold mine. The illustrations are gorgeous and so vivid. We love the ocean and all of it's unique and interesting inhabitants. I didn't really know about dumbo octopuses or a lot of the other different types until my kids and I opened this book. We love this so much and hope that there are going to be more animal books of this nature in the future. Thank you for introducing us to the dumbo octopus!
This is adorable! It's just the right depth of fact, with as much fun as you'd expect. I did have an initial negative reaction to the way the narrator speaks about himself, but it was turned around wonderfully at the end. The art is beautiful, and there are plenty of pages of it and of all kinds of cephalopods!
This was a great graphic novel introducing young readers to Cephalopods. The glossary was very cool to see at the end and helped connect what we learned. The novel was extremely easy to follow along with and an easy, but interesting read. Thank you to NetGalley, Lerner Publishing Group, and Graphic Universe for the advanced reader copy.
This is an adorable non-fiction graphic novel for older kids! Easy and interesting facts accompanied by adorable illustrations. Easy to follow the flow of text. Would love to see a whole series of these.
A very cute, educational graphic novel that tells you all about cephalopods. I love all of the colors throughout; they鈥檙e very bright and pastel themed. Loved the glossary at the end. Plus, the author was born in Iowa. How cool?!
